>> and then it hits you. even though remnants of past remain this isn't a grocery store anymore it is a store completely reinvented, a wonderland of soda with more than 750 varieties of the bubbly stuff, all in glass bottles, all made with real sugar. >> you can buy one bottle of anything in here. i'm not trying to sell you a 24 pack especially if you only need six or one. try it. see if you like it. >> it wasn't always in the soda pop business. >> this was the vegetables and canned corns and fruits were on the other side of the aisle. that was then. >> in fact the business is something of of a los angeles

institution. the store's deli was known for making huge italian sandwiches including the blockbuster. >> he went to put it in his mouth. the sandwich was bigger than his mouth. he said it was a real blockbuster and it has been a blockbuster ever since. >> the marketplace changed dramatically around them. when john took over he could see the future was bleak for independent grocery stores. he knew it wasn't likely to survive if they continue to do the same thing. >> it was just a matter of time. >> john's motivation came after he had a heated exchange with a local pepsi salesperson. >> he says i'll only charge you $5.59 a case. i said i'm going to send my

customers to the sz ralph's down the street. they are sheing them cheaper than i could buy them from. he says pepsi cola is a demand item. i said my customers would be happy i was honest and told them i could buy them cheaper than i could buy them. they don't need to buy them from me. >> he i can't thiyanked the big his shelf. he set out on a mission making great product that is actually really needed his shelf space. zbli we . >> i went out and found independent bottlers and put them on the shelf. >> not surprisingly, his son was baffled by his son's plan. >> i said we are going to do

sodas. he told gail who works here. he says he is crazy. he is absolutely crazy. i'm absolutely positive of it. but it turned out. it turned out. that's what people were looking for but nobody asked. it is really easy to make decisions when you're going broke. there's no bad decisions. you're going to go broke anyway. >> for john the gloves were off and he was in a battle to save the family business. it was his way of differentia differentiating himself. >> a little army can defeat a big army. all you can do is create a breakthrough and get behind the lines and destroy them. i'll do everything exactly opposite from what they say is good business practices, fewer

suppliers, less choice. no. more choice, just overload them. continually overload them and you win, simple. >> this strategy worked and slowly they transformed from a grocery store to a soda pop shop. it is like mr. cucumber which he carried exclus lively before it got selected soda of the year. >> it is so rare to find the sodas you can't find all over the place. i thought it was fantastic. >> more people are walking through the door to buy craft soda than ever before. and hopefully the repositioning of the store will help the business last another hundred years. >> let's be happy with what we are doing and that's what we did. we became very happy for selling

sodas. people come in and say you have the happiest customers i have ever seen. everybody is happy. chances are when you think of poll dancing you think of exotic dancers. currently it's one of the hottest fitness in the nation. thousands expected to participate in a poll expo. studios are opening quickly in the u.s. and overseas. while some people say they would like to see it in the olympics. they still have to deal with the reputation surrounding the support. >> i'm an elementary schoolteacher. >> i work in a doctor's office. >> if you're not already familiar with poll fitness it may not be the types of women

you expect to see learn the latest moves. it's not just a performance it's a growing business. >> i was looking for a different sorts of class. i was used to yoga and belly dancing and pole. i thought that's a great opportunity. that was my vision. i said this is where i'm going to start. >> sherry knew she had a hit. her classes were full with people look frg a full fun way for people to get in shape. that said she had to contend with what old nations are. >> the hurdles are that the conception of pole. it's not necessarily stripping. that's what a lot of people think when you hear of poll dancing.

struggle. even things in your basic life you would say who has time to sleep? the first something we call it being under the influence of four p's, pleasure, passion and pain. when you're under that you develop flawed perspectives. >> and get a distorted view of the world. >> yeah. >> you mean distorted view of your path. what do you mean? >> you don't big marketing budgets. for example you were going to create that dress. think about going to blooming dales and a place where people are already playing. >> right. that i will laugh at me. >> let's say it's new investment bank thaers joers and you'll gi

shopping experience. you created your own playground. as an entrepreneur you can't go down the paths everybody else is going. can you think where that would do better? >> to the more traditional paths. >> okay. and then partnering with big corporate companies. that's great because you get their marketing dollars and their distribution. how do you get in with them? >> most entrepreneurs think you have to build a company from ground up. you build it, raise a little money and build a congressmmpan. corporate america has that in spades. they lack entrepreneurial ideas. i wouldn't build a health care company today. i would come up with a plan and go to united health care that has 40 million members. the way to do that is instead of

focusing on necessarily building your business you're taking that effort on focusing on the partner. if i help united beat cigna. >> that's valuable to them. >> right. i'll spend my effort on what problem and how do i find their investment bankers, the people that play in that case as opposed to asking -- >> and that's a shortcut to customers too. it is almost the same as finding your path, right? if you focus on them you're not s scattered. >> we would find revenue there. you'll go and chase every customer and have scarce resources. you have to say i'll sell my dress to women whose name starts with the letter b. i'll find out where they eat and

where they sleep. i get depth and understanding. >> and it's what facebook did. >> it started with -- >> yeah, tender. all of these did. >> okay create your own rules. what do you mean by that? >> if you compete on price you're not going to have the capital and resources that other resources have. i was doing work with a company that does dna testing for pregnant moms so you learn more about your kids and things like that. they competed by saying we'll follow up with you, same thing everybody is doing. we helped them to say it's really an emotional cell. is there anything you wouldn't do for your unborn baby? >> right. >> so you're clangihanging the because you can't compete on their terms just like going to your own playground you have to create the rules. >> and here comes your marketing

reason i gave this number, first i saw a lot of passion from you and you have a lot of experience in the industry but i wanted more information from you on why there's true need and demand from this type of product. we've all been there trying to pull our luggage and drink our coffee but would love to hear from you on some sort of validation to show this is something consumers really need. the other thing was price point versus competitor, how is this price versus the rest of your competitors? and additionally one thing i would suggest is to really think through how to convince us what the opportunity is. you describe how big the market was in terms of the number of travellers there. but how will you get there? >> fantastic. good luck with everything. i'm so jealous of this the next time i'm in the airport but this is great.

and follow up and just get a feel for how things are going and then lastly you probably want some kind of group skype or something where everybody can get together and bounce things off each other and here's what is great. here's what's not great and each one of those has a very different purpose and is very important and i don't know if i would go without any one of those three things. >> we now have the top two tips that you need to know to help your small business grow. yours is also about communication. let's start with you. >> it's a big tip. having looked at a thousand or so companies there's one cultural element that constantly comes back to haunt them. they don't communicate with their employees. they don't listen well enough. great companies are smart and fast at the same time put to be smart and fast you have to have a culture that encourages everybody to be decree teak driven. egos get in the way

unfortunately but in the small business where everybody is a touch point and overlaps with each other they have to learn to be able to offer each other analysis of what they're doing and input to do it better. everybody is everybody's coach. it works beautifully when you get that kind of cohesion among the employees of your company. >> you're up. >> yeah. so as an entrepreneur you need to be able to demonstrate growth and progress at every point of the road. so whether it's a customer, investor, partner, distributor, whatever it may be you need to be able to demon state that your business is moving forward. >> what happen ifs your business isn't moving forward? >> then you're in trouble. let's say it's at the idea phase. a lot of entrepreneurs haven't yet launched their business. you can still communicate how you're making progress in so many ways so before a product launches you'll need to do customer testing and you may need to have a beta test, you may need to have a prototype made and understand the

competitive market. >> if you go through a tough time progress would be what you are doing to counter the tough times. >> exactly, yeah. >> what you're learning. how you're going to mediate against the circumstances that you're experiencing but without demonstrating growth. without demonstrating progress, a lot of partners may start to lose confidence or question the product your value has. >> you're chomping at the bit to get in here brian. >> progress is good but more important is celebrating every opportunity that you achieved something. >> and that's another way of saying what i'm saying. show how you got to where you are today. demonstrate the path you have gone through. oh, wow, they have done x, y, z. they're not just saying i have an idea and not doing work behind it. >> celebrating it also. externally but internally. that gets people motivated and deciding to keep working with you. even through the hard times.

>> i always wanted to get the purple heart. this was much easier. but he made a deal with the devil. she is the devil. he made a deal with the devil. it's true. i hear we're leading florida by a little bit. i don't know why we're not winning by a lot. >> but trump isn't ahead in florida or nationally. >> swelling to double digits in some polls. trump says he's not worried. >> i think we're going to do very well. probably a close race. i don't know why it would be a close race. it's going to be horrible for safety and security. i don't think anyone wants four more years of obama. that's what you're going to get and it's about jobs and it's about the economy. >> but if the election is about swrobs, trump might be bark up the wrong tree. the economy added 255,000 and

beating expectations. some republicans and congress are saying they don't want to vote for trump. and clinton is out with an attack ad. highlighting conservatives criticizing trump's foreign policy. and days ago they call to abandon their nominee. >> if you are repeatedly having to say in very strong terms that what he has said is unacceptable, why are you still endorsing him? what does this say about your party that this is your standard bearer? >> joining me now is democratic strategist jamal simmons, michelle from the atlantic and

republican strategist, franco, former advisor to john mccain. thank you for being here. >> thank you. >> michelle, the trump campaign keeps saying everything is on track. does he enter truly aware of how bad the past week was. >> it's hard to tell how self-aware he is and how much of it is an act and how much his people are just trying to -- like the scene in animal house with kevin bacon standing there screaming, remain calm, everything is okay. so i don't think that the candidate quite grasps how bad things are. whether or not the staff does remains to be seen. >> the last week was full of controversies. many of them almost one or two a day. >> i think the controversy over the kahn family and their son that was tragically killed

during the war. trump going after that family and going after the mother in particular that sood there silently. he said his family hacked him but the mother stood there silently and he went after her for the reason she didn't speak. it's the gold star family issue. it's something that has to do with his own temperament and character and here's what trump is so good at. he knows there's a problem and he starts to find other things over the course of the week and i think people are getting hip to his game. >> i want to point out that he released a new ad vowing to stand up for trump. watch this. >> people ask me, what do you think about trump? honestly, i don't care for him much. my duty is always to you. so if donald trump is the president, i'll stand up to him, plain and simple. >> in your opinion is this just the start of a wave of elected

republicans defecting? >> well, i'm surprised it hasn't sta started before and mike had a tough race. he has a tough race in his hands. and others will be joining him soon. i think the majority of our party regulars, to call them that were expecting, never liked donald trump but we were expecting something that didn't happen. we were promised what would happen. that after the primaries he would do two things. he would pivot to a general election and act, his words, presidential. that would not happen. and secondly he will listen to party leaders and turn to the leadership and start running a more conventional campaign. he has done the opposite. he attacked the republican party, the republican speaker of the house. senator mccain and in fact

suggested that the election is rigged. i think he thinks he's going to lose. he's already setting it up. one question is was george w. bush and able to rig the election? >> the answer is no. >> but let me ask you, if you brought up john mccain, do you invision any possible way mccain will with draw his endorsement of trump? >> i think it's where the speaker has been and that's not a blanket endorsement. i believe something he taug me a long time ago. country first and i believe he believes in that motto. he has been a party loyalist and he understands that it is important. that we are playing with fire. this is about the dismemberment of the republican party. and there is legitimate trepidation in our party. and could we preserve the republican party but to answer

your question, i frankly believe in my opinion that if this continues, senator mccain and others will with draw their endorsement. >> michelle, let me go to michelle on this though because i want to get into the national polls in key states. 6-6 and 15 points in new hampshire. is this a post convention bounce for clinton or the results of donald trump's blunders this week, or both? >> i don't think you can separate it. the convention for the democrats went very smoothly. they didn't have as much chaos as was being predicted. they did a good job personalizing her. and then you followed it up with a string of mind boggling gas on his part. and just the sense that they lost control of the train which starts to make people really nervous because they don't foresee a way to be better.

and the party regulars in the republican party going what are we going to do about this? so i don't think you can separate it. >> what about the clinton ads quoting conservatives? >> the conservatives are coming out. it's the drip, drip, drip. this is the beginning of this which will turn into a flood as we go into the end of the summer and the fall. we talked about senator mccain earlier. let's not forget when people stood up at rallies and said things that were offensive about the president, john mccann set up in the crowd and tried to sit them down. >> he is not a muslim, he's an american. >> so i have to believe -- you can be a muslim and an american but it's okay. i have to believe that he has to internally look at what donald trump is doing and be concerned not just for the republican party which is in jeopardy but for the united states of america when you unleash the sentiments

coming out. >> michelle, mr. trump revealed a 13 member economic team he calls it but all men, i mean is this an unforced error. >> well he did point out that ivanka would be very popular if we wanted to put her in the cabinet but people have been asking about this. this is just a world he seems to occupy. this is how his brain works. why would he have a woman on his list and to be fair, women aren't really voting for him. they aren't supporting him so why should he? he has that whole thing going. >> everybody stay with me. lots more ahead. >> next, potential pitfalls for the clinton campaign. even after trump's very bad week. and later, fighting back against new voting restrictions in 13 states.

clinton. raising $80 million in july to her $90 million. in the coming months trump will have the opportunity to debate clinton. to unveil new tv ads. driving home his message and to exploit clinton's e-mail controversy with new questions about whether she is mischaracterizing the fbi director's testimony. >> i had said during the interview and many other occasions over the past months that what i told the fbi which he said was truthful is consistent with what i said publicly so i may have short circuited and for that i will try to clarify. >> back with me is i can't mall simmons. >> jamal is the good news for trump. is that it's only august.

>> the good news for everyone is that people are starting to pay attention to what is happening with donald trump. >> how badly he is ramping up some of the emotions out of the krub and whether trump can change or become someone different but i think the last year has told us that this 70-year-old man is what he is and this is how we're going to get to the end. >> when i look at who he is, one of the things that is important to him is could this low polling, these polls that all have him down, could this be a wake up call to him. >> i don't know about that. i think being a novice he is charged up by these crowds and he believes that has really been the american people. >> it would be the mother of resets for him to do it. what he would need to do here if he has the discipline and the temperament and the maturity and

the values to do is to start talking about the issues and as a rev ren tum on hillary clinton rather than a referendum on donald trump, that requires discipline and i have a lot of problems with her and most of our other nominees would be ahead in this point and the problem with donald trump and we've seen him time and again is that lack of discipline. i think his being is that of -- we all called it. we know where it is. narcissism, bullying, whatever you want to call it. i think it's a day or two and he can't help himself. anyone that attacks him, anyone, he reacts viscerally and that was fine until ordinary people like a gold star mother are attack. he's crossed a line and i think he can be baited as hillary clinton says by a tweet or any

attack and that will be his achilles heel. >> i mentioned fund-raising numbers so looking at the numbers he still has some breathing room here. >> look, he is got a very devoted base. they're going to stick by him no matter how crazy the crazy gets. he has the small donors that he can tap going forward but it's going to be an issue when he needs somebody like the koch brothers to step up and help him through the last mile or the big donors. none of them seem very comfortable with him and he's still going to have a gap as he goes forward. he's not going to self-fund this general election. that's a level he doesn't want to get into. >> jamal for all the talk about trump's high unfavorables in terms of the ratings, hillary clinton's rates are just about as bad. how much do her bad numbers cancel his out?

>> well, every choice in politics is comparative. so you have to choose hillary clinton that you may have problems with versus donald trump who you are learning to have a whole bunch of problems here. the ballot question in most of these states are going to have four people on that ballot and not just two. i wouldn't be surprised if you saw a big surge in votes for the libber tarn candidate and green party candidate. you don't remember the 2000 recount in the same way people that are older than that do so you're very likely to make a mistake and vote for somebody that's not one of the major party candidates. >> that's an excellent point. donald trump possibly could win this thing if gary johnson gets to 15 or 16% and gets on the debate stage and pulls a ross perot and can win 15 to 20% of the popular vote. in a way, hillary clinton is the

conventional candidate running for a third obama term. just as george h.w. bush lost in '92 because of that vote, that is the only way i see, the only path. a very large surge for alaba alternative candidates participating in the debate taking popular votes from others that would be bernie sanders supporters and he wins with a minority of the vote. >> michelle, he has a major economic address i believe tomorrow in detroit. could he possibly use that to get back on message? >> he absolutely could use that to get back on message but he seems to have trouble staying on message or finding his message. he has the whole populust style and fever but can't focus for more than two minutes at a time.
