currently a senator and where he had formerly been the governor, he has added to the ticket some which could make the state of virginia out of reach for donald trump. and that is certainly notable in the map that as seen virginia be a swing state in pass cycles. the selection of tim kaine is helpful based on geography which is not always the modern calculation of a running mate and then perhaps most importantly, on all issues he described himself as being someone who could brag about her when she might be uncomfortable talking about some of her own strengths and attributes and he can be an advocate in ways others cannot including herself on matters like trustworthiness where she's been dragging in polling on those specific points. tim kaine can be a partner on those. >> kelly o'donnell, thank you so much for that. i want to bring in former senate aide to hillary clinton and we also have a former adviser to

senator john mccain. as you look at the headline today, it's got to be the polls. we look at the swing states and national polls. they're widening. they reinforce. they echo, they mirror what we've seen and on top of those numbers, the list of controversies that have risen over the last five, six, seven days i won't read them all but the khan family and questions about relationship with vladimir putin and others here, it seems to all be coming together for the democratic nominee at least on this sunday. >> that's right. the bad news here for donald trump is it really isn't long until the election. it's a long way but not really. i'll explain why in a moment. it's starting to gel for hillary clinton and people have made up their minds about the e-mail and about donald trump's temperament and he's got the short end of the stick. so in many ways, this is now

starting to be a campaign that's hers to lose, which could happen. she could implode. something could come out in e-mails that's new. that would be difficult to perceive. it's possible. a terrorist attack could reset the campaign. but now a situation where it's going to be very difficult to change the minds of people who clearly made up their minds and i think we'll look back at this as probably the khan family as being a defining moment as it was to sarah palin when she made the comment she could see russia from her house. and this might have been the event that sort of changed the dynamic of the race. to get that back is now almost a referendum on hillary clinton and that is going to be something that might be difficult to do since people have already made their minds up and appear to start to support her. short of imploding, it's a very

tall order for donald trump. >> tall order for donald trump. hallie jackson was reporting for us and it is early. we wait until post-labor day to say there's a concern here because numbers are starting to gel in certain places. >> i go back to the point though that a lot of americans have made up their mind about the e-mails. i think if you look at donald trump's convention and i specifically say donald trump's convention, the polls suggest he came out of his convention weaker than historically a republican nominee would. >> higher ratings. >> if you look at how democrats came out of their convention it was a message of unity that carried in the couple weeks since the convention. and i think that's the message that is resounding in that democrats are united behind their nominee. i think what hillary clinton needs to do going forward is not only speak positively about the thing she'll do as president but

also say to the american people that what you think donald trump is saying is not true speak actually. it's more than that. it's something that's bigoted and i think americans have made their decision about that as well. >> quickly here when you look at the way the week ended up and as we look forward to clinton being in florida and then trump being in michigan as they start to again hit the road here. bad week for hillary clinton because it ended not with a positive note, e-mail server, yet you had donald trump all in the news. in all of the headlines until the end of the week. >> i'll go back to what donna brazil has said, whatever donald trump is doing, hillary clinton is running for president of the united states. not everything will get the same level of media attention that donald trump will because of his tweets and his statements. what she's doing is growing her coalition. that's something that presidential campaigns are about. they're about growth. that's where you'll see a

stein, are youth voters as part of all of the segments that you're going after here. you're also looking at as was said in a little bit that we played as you were giving your remarks after being nominated, you're going after bernie sanders. how are you going to get that youth vote, dr. stein? >> the youth vote seems to be coming to us. i'm a candidate that will cancel student debt like we did for the bankers, we bailed out crooks on wall street who crashed the economy, we're saying it's about time to bail out the young people who are the victims of that crashed economy. there are 42 million of them. that alone is enough to actually win a three-way race. this is clearly where our groundswell is coming from and there's no one better positioned to actually network, to use social media and mobilize themselves in order to get that word out. that seems to be what's actually happening. many of the sanders supporters

and organizers are now flocking to our campaign like cornell west, for example, and other spokespeople from that campaign from bernie or bust campaign for example. so word is getting out. >> dr. stein, as you know, there are those thresholds to be part of the debate, to be part of the town halls and as you try to get out the answer to the question, which you probably have to answer many times, what is the green party. how are you going to do that if you can't be part of those events. do you think that's important for what you're trying to do? >> absolutely. i think it's important to the american public. the american people are not happy campers. and dislike and distrust both hillary clinton and donald trump and in fact a majority of voters is clamoring for other voices and other choices. as that word begins to get out, we expect to come up in the polls and american voters not only have a right to vote, we have a right to know who we can vote for. and what we're saying is that if

the republican nominee trails nine points and 11 points in a poll released a day later as trump prepares to give what his campaign is calling a major address to the detroit economic club on monday. michigan though is not his only worry. just the last week he trails or is tied with clinton in eight battleground state polls. battleground states enough to decide the election by themselves. a democratic pollster joins us right now. when you look at this and it's been said we should look forward another month or so. you're a guy that looks at the numbers. how real is this? >> i think it's pretty real right now. i think we have 90 days left until november. a lot can happen. i think the republican convention, period after was donald trump's first introduction to a lot of americans. when you look at the list of

battleground states, arizona and georgia aren't battleground states. those are states republicans have won the last couple of elections and the fact that he's trailing in arizona and georgia even now, that i think more than the national poll should give them a lot of concern. >> he's ahead just a little in arizona. behind in georgia. and that was going to be my next question as we look at it, fred. we call them battleground states but traditionally not. they were pre-swing when we had conversations in the past. are these real and now swing states? >> i guess it was always to me a tough electoral map for donald trump. i think given what's happened in this race, it's telling that arizona and georgia are considered battleground states. those are states republicans have to carry to get to 270. the fact there battlrounds now tells us more than national polls the hill that donald trump has to climb right now. >> i was looking at some of the drills that came out in the last

couple days. one was looking at the way donald trump, the republican nominee, was responding to the khan family and not helping accord-ding to data. more than half of the voter as we put numbers up here call his response inappropriate. the question is how durable is this criticism, this concern about his khan response? >> you know, this is post-convention period again for both clinton and trump to reset and try to make this election on their terms and instead of trump making this about hillary clinton, about the economy. we're now into week two of donald trump versus the khan family. i can't imagine as a strategist this is where you want your campaign to be a week or so after the convention. >> all right. fred yang, thank you for stopping by. appreciate it as always. next, the vice presidential candidates. want to talk about them. how mike pence, tim kaine may be

the vice presidential nominee often called the attack dog but also the defenders in chief and the gaffe killers. here's democratic presidential nominee tim kaine on "meet the press" talking about trust. >> how do you govern if the public doesn't trust you? >> i'm not assuming that's the case even a month from now. we came out of the convention with positive momentum. hillary clinton did a great job telling her stories and others talked about how she helped them. >> on the other side here's governor mike pence talking

about the feud with the khan family. >> we honor him and his family as we do all gold families in this country. >> let's bring in our panel. thank you for coming in today. let's start with how they are doing. when you look at both vice presidential nominees. i said at the top defenders in chief. fill in the gaffes. only a couple weeks in, how are they doing? >> they're both doing well. this election would be decided on how well donald trump and hillary clinton do. i think every single election. i think vice presidents do two things and only two things. first of all, do they help solidify the base? i think mike pence did that. hillary clinton signaled she selected someone who shares her

views, a centrist democrat. there's a test of the american people. as second in command ready to assume the presidency? i think they both will prove that they are ready for that task. sarah palin did not. tom eagleton in 1982 did not and was dropped from the ticket. obviously they serve to soften the message, also serving as attack dog but principle role is to unify their base, their party, and to assure the american people that they are ready to assume the presidency if something were to happen to the president. >> two sides of that. one, the vice presidential nominee can offset weaknesses here. pence can address veterans issues and talk about how he understands the operation of a state in calling perhaps some favors in the battleground

states to those other governors that say, okay, we both understand each other and what we need but then there's also this year of pence and his statements and beliefs with rega to lgbt policy that will go the other way. where do you sort of assess and put pence? >> he's an interesting pick because he and trump have a good cop/bad cop dynamic. trump does clean up in aisle 4 dynamic. we can't see a ton of results from the work that pence has been doing. what stands out to me is the fact that in the case in senator jeff flake, one of the most staunch opponents to trump in the senate who is a republican flake said this morning that pence reached out to him. they had a conversation and he didn't change his mind and still opposes trump. same thing in southeast wisconsin where mike pence met

with never trump folks two weeks ago and said i need your help boosting turnout in wisconsin. we have to maximize and then trump turned around and almost didn't turn endorse paul ryan. i'm not sure pence will be able to solve the challenge. >> taking on the ceo role, getting out there and making sure they understand what's happening and trying to alleviate concerns, i want to shift over to the democratic ticket looking at tim kaine here. they are out on the trail last week. we were covering some of their first speeches together. they're making it through the rust belt there. as you listen to secretary clinton and listen to senator kaine, there was something about this that was a little bit of a folksiness of tim kaine rubbing off on secretary clinton not known necessarily for being folksy. >> what i like about it is that

if you look at the republicans, i thought that ticket was k contradictory. tim kaine, someone that's worked on every level of government, hillary clinton in my experience and i think the country will come to see this more so, she's really a policy person. she really loves understanding and getting to craft public policy. >> policy is not folksy. >> what tim kaine does add is the ability to move some of that policy through the bureaucracy and being able to pull levels of the bureaucracy and get resources to local communities. i think it's really important. i think there's a good complement to her in that way. >> there's also dissidents. i want to go back to several statements. tim kaine a split with clinton. saying the air strikes on

islamic state isis. lacked legal authority. an issue here, betsy? >> certainly without a doubt. the reality is kaine's signature issue is pushing for more congressional authority when it comes to authorizing military force particularly lly in the n terror. clinton doesn't share that concern. that's central to kaine. this is kaine's signature issue. he and clinton seem to differ particularly the fact that it involves libya has potential to be a liability. given that her support for the libyan intervention doesn't look particularly great at this point in the presidential election. >> the polls that we've been talking about, swing state polls, national polls, does pence put him farther in front here help to buffer some of the problems? >> i think he does. i disagree. i think he's an excellent choice. he has executive experience. he has congressional experience.

it would have been a disaster had donald trump chosen someone that is not as conventional choice as pence. i also agree -- you didn't mention that governor kaine has a different view on tpp than hillary clinton has at the current time. there are contradictions in the kaine campaign and i think mike pence's record and experience and i think acceptance within the republican party will be an asset. i think he'll prove to be an asset. he's likable individual. he'll connect very well not only with republicans but independents as well. >> my sunday friends, you all enjoy the olympics as you watch it all week long. it's been a bruising week for donald trump as we talked about those sinking poll numbers. can he turn this around? joining me now is barry bennett,

former campaign adviser to donald trump. when things get tough, you reach out to your friends, right? when you look at donald trump and you having the experience of the ben carson campaign and being the campaign manager there and also the donald trump experience here, he doesn't have the governors, the senators, the congress members at least in numbers certainly that previous nominees had. he doesn't have anybody to turn to. >> if you look for a friend, the last person i would turn to is a politician. >> speaking as a politico. >> exactly. if you want a friend, get a dog in washington. he has 20 million followers on social media which nobody else has. 2 to 1 on facebook to hillary clinton. he has plenty of support out there. i have been on this seven days a week 24 hours a day for almost two years now. the one thing i learned is if

you think you can predict tomorrow by what's happened today, you're going to be made a fool. >> one of the most often said things in this cycle. you have donald trump. you're in there. these poll numbers come in today. unfortunately for the trump campaign from your view if you're his adviser, this doesn't look good because it's affirming a week full of bad things, bad headlines. what do you do? >> i tell him this. i say, listen, you have the single most powerful political message we've ever seen. you walk through these primaries with this strong message about being the voice of people who don't have a voice. talk about it. don't talk about this other stuff. don't go down rabbit holes talking about russia or khans. talk about people in real pain. they haven't been able to find a job. they're not getting pay raises. heroin is really taking its toll on small communities across some of these target states.

talk about that. >> and you're saying talk about the core of the campaign message here. as hallie jackson, our nbc news correspondent following the trump campaign said on friday, when he started to attack secretary clinton regarding her temperament, she described him as the i'm rubber, you're glue response to these polls and bad headlines. he doesn't seem to want to do exactly what you're suggesting. so why would you suggest him to do that because he's not going to change? >> if he does it, he'll win and win big. if he pivots big and starts talking about his heart and not his mouth, he'll win big. there is so much frustration in america. so much anger. >> so he raised $80 million is the number. what do you tell him to do with that money first off? is he doing the right thing, going to michigan, on an economic message? is he in the right places? >> i think he's in the right
