follow this breaking news at this hour in new york city. a man is climbing trump tower in manhattan using suction cups to move up the building. they're lowering scaffolding here in an effort to make contact with him. we'll continue to follow it. we'll be back tomorrow with more. good night. with all due respect to donald trump's mouth, next time, he might want to put the safety on. on the show tonight we'll break down ads, polls, and we'll hope that donnie doesn't have a break down over the election. let's get started. we've got a brand new bloomberg politics national survey out today that chose hillary clinton beating donald trump 50-44 in a two-way race. the margin dropped slight when i

the two leading third party candidates are added to the mix. we'll talk more about those poll findings in a minute. but first, trump and his campaign are still dealing with the fallout from the republican nominee's remark about second amendment people yet. news reports now that the secret service has had conversations today with the trump campaign about that comment. out of concern that the remark could incite violence against clinton. trump and his campaign are still saying he was talking about voter mobilization while some republicans, including former campaign manager corey lewandowski and the speaker of the house are going with a different talking point. that the whole thing was a joke gone bad. that's what a lot of people in the press are thinking. here's what trump had to say about this matter at his rally this afternoon in virginia. >> they can take a little story that isn't a story and make it into a big deal. it happens so much.

it happens so much. and speaking of that, remember this. we have so many things that we have to protect in this country. we have to protect our second amendment, which is under siege. it's under siege. >> it happens so much. it's under siege. trump was still speaking at that rally, hillary clinton weighed in during her own campaign event this afternoon in des moines, iowa. >> words matter, my friends. and if you are running to be president or you are president of the united states, words can have tremendous consequences. yesterday we witnessed the latest in a long line of casual comments from donald trump that cross the line. his casual cruelty to a gold star family.

his casual suggestion that more countries should have nuclear weapons. and now his casual inciting of violence. every single one of these incidents shows us that donald trump simply does not have the temperament to be president and commander in chief of the united states. >> two of the reasons this is dominating the news cycle is because explicitly dismissing it as an outright high and because those skeptical voices coming from conservative twitter and the usually friendly fox news channel. both the clinton and trump campaigns are trying to raise money off this. has it done any permanent damage to donald trump? >> i think not as big as the clinton campaign thought yesterday. the trump campaign has stuck to its guns, pardon the pun and suggested he was not making a

joke about it. it if the secret service investigation looks into it, it will be more. this is another thing, come the fall, if there are republicans both the republicans and those who want to abandon trump. i don't think it is causing major damage yet pending the secret service investigation but i think it is causing some. >> right now, the brand position, the negative brand position for trump is unstable. this is one where we have a term called brand support points. >> the negative side. so i'm saying, it is basically now, it is in the list with the issue, the russians hacking into hillary clinton's e-mails. with mccain not being a war hero. now it is support point number 7. so it doesn't change the math.

it gives you one more tool to may with. >> the press shouldn't be biased. the reality, saying what it is. not what it ought to be. the press maze favorites at times. and trump needs to be the press's favorite. they're getting better coverage. they normally don't. i think one reason this is bad for trump. he has another big fight with the press. the press thinks he is a hire. he is mad at the press for the way they're covering it. the more this is tension between trump and the press. >> i think the press doesn't need him anymore. i think basically, this was the story of a generation and we're 90 days away from an election. and i think the press and i think the press by nature usually does lean more democratic. just who they are as human beings. and i think part of the voice, okay, we've made the game. we've carried you to this point but now a little of that bias may be coming out. >> trump just tweeted there was

no meeting, despite news reports, no meetinger what conversation ever happened between secret service and the trump campaign regarding what happened yesterday. but the secret service tweeted they are concerned about it. let's talk now about our new bloomberg politics poll. hillary clinton has maintained some of her post convention bump. she beat trump by 6 points. 50-44. clinton is leading with independents, women, including white women, young and unmarried voters. trump is still up among the men, white men with no college degree, people 65 years and older, evangelicals, and voters with college degrees. we should say in a four-way race. adding in the green party and the libertarian party. as we get further away from the democratic convention. supporters of trump and clinton have vastly different motivations for backing their

favorite choice. 56% of clinton supporters say they're month pro clinton than anti-trump. they differ overwhelmingly. they are more anti-clinton than for the republican candidate. so on these top line numbers, what is your biggest takeaway? >> the biggest takeaway from the poll is that things of not changed much since the post convention bump. if you aggregate all the polls, the margin is about 7.3. the bloomberg is a little on the lower side. when i do the cross, you said a while ago. if trump doesn't win business, he doesn't win. 61% of people in that poll think that he is doing worse, they're perception of him as a businessman has gone south since the campaign. if i bow to the church of mark halperson which do i, that is a very telling number. >> he has to sell his business credentials. there have been stories by the

clinton campaign and the press has done on its own hook at trump's business record and it is clear, the republican convention didn't rebuild that. although there were efforts at the straengs on build that up. all right. bloomberg politics also asked people for their views on president obama and the country. half the country said they approve the job he's doing and yet 68% said the country is headed in the wrong direction. and almost half those likely voters said democrats were to blame compared to 22% who said it was the republicans' fault. 30% said they were not sure who to blame. should democrats be worried about that? it flies in the face of the party in general. >> it is a very strange mix. even if the country blames the democrats. even if overwhelmingly as has been the case, people think we're on the wrong track. they still think president obama is doing a good job. he is getting close to his highest numbers since the beginning of his presidency.

i can't really explain it. >> i think it is a little, at the end, the economy is not in a terrible shape. so that being said, and he seems very statesman. he gave a great speech. his numbers are good before that. the one number back to the bloomberg poll, the temperament for president. hillary clinton. 56%. for donald trump, 31%. how does a guy get elected if two out of three people think he has the make-up for that office? >> the president, even at his worst moment, his approval rating never got below 40%. he's gone from the low 40s at his low point to the mid 50s. and he has recovered some of the people who voted for him who maybe lost, i believe, and he's some successes in foreign policy and at home. but it is a real problem for the trump campaign. they can cite wrong track all they want. when a guy who has half the country, more than half the country afroofg job he's doing, will be out there hitting the pavement for hillary clinton, that's a problem. >> same for ronald reagan. >> finally after donald trump

complained that some of the general election debates are scheduled on nights with nfl games, we asked likely voters which they would watch? if the dates don't change? football against debates? 69% said they would watch the debate. only 26 said they would choose the game. i'll be professionally obligated to watch the debates. which would you watch? football or the debates? >> it depends if the jets are playing. i know they have all this technology. >> which would you watch live? >> to all my fans in queens, they'll be upset with me. i would watch the debate. >> picture and picture and watch the game. >> i think -- >> get the audio. >> those debates will be the biggest numbers since the moon landing. >> i've been saying they'll be the most highly watched shows of all time. i'm getting less sure about that. they'll be big but i thought he this would be the biggest tv events of all time.

suspicious? >> i want to go back like the clinton brand. the so once again one more support point. the difference between the two, all those support points on the side of clinton, all the support points here. it is easy and sexy to say clinton made a joke about assassinating -- >> trump. >> made a joke -- trump made a joke that assassinating hillary clinton. this is all mushy. it is not sound bity enough. it is not sexy enough. it is all on brand for her under the untruthful category. >> there is business as usual. every administration i've ever covered, there are allies on the outside who are in the profit business, work to get special treatment. that's not new. what is different here is that when hillary clinton accepted the job as secretary of state, it was clear from the obama white house' point of view, there needed to be some walls put up so that the foundation her husband was running didn't create problems. in this case, a variety of

they're not doing back ground checks on people. my initial instinct, i'll bet trump's people sent him there. how is this guy there? a list of sign that's were talking points. so i didn't to go some great major conspiracy thing myself instinct was pretty clever. >> if the campaign invited him, it would have been a mistake. they wouldn't have invited him on purpose. if they invited him or if the trump campaign sent him, i have no reason to believe seethe true, that deserves more scrutiny. but in the absence of that, republicans are hurting themselves. they have a candidate who gives them few windows to break through. they had a window until trump said the thing he said yesterday. they have a window now as that dies down. push the clinton foundation and try to explain to people or push this nonstory? it seems pretty obvious to me. they can't waste their time on things that aren't going anywhere. i can't see how this goes anywhere once they repudiated the guy. >> a tough story to tell.

with all this news about donald trump today, we decided to call on someone who angst lot about it. a veteran and yet always youthful pollster and senior adviser to trump's campaign. >> thank you. >> you've been talking about what he said yesterday. which you need to talk about. do you think people are willfully misinterpreting what he said? you think that people are doing it on purpose? or why do so many people interpret it as his saying, joking that my supporters could rise up? the second amendment supporters could rise up? why are so many getting it wrong? >> people tend to look at the news through their own political views already. if you're for hillary clinton, you see it one way. if you're for donald trump, you see it another way.

get rid of the second amendment. >> what does that mean? >> it means that other people hunt? in the last 24 hours, they can a content analysis. as of this morning, i'm sure it is worse. there was five times more coverage on what donald trump said about mobilizing gun owners across this country versus covering the fact that moammar mateen's father sat right behind this. where would you feel more safe? where would you feel more safe in at a rally where the speaker who is running for president says you have a right to protect yourself under your second amendment constitutional rights? or would you feel more safe at a rally where the man who perpetrated the worst mass murder since 9/11 in america's history was standing right

typical. i've been -- the secret service, an incredible group that is very discreet and i don't think we should look at them through a political lens whatsoever. i've traveled with them. i know what they're about. >> we should not read into the degree to which they're taking it seriously? >> i wouldn't read anything into it. it is the secret service. i will say this. the idea that people have been parading on cable and network tv suggesting that donald trump was calling for any kind of nefarious action against, criminal action against hillary clinton or joking about it, i think is very disturbing to me. it just goes on and on. >> i think it is accurate. >> that he is calling for her -- her demise? >> let me ask you a question, as a woman, not in a bar. you're welcome to come over any time. listen. what in the world is elizabeth warren thinking? why do certain people get away with saying snings this is a united states senator. after mike pence was nominated that they deserve each other.

wanted her private server so she could communicate with her daughter chelsea and exchange recipes and yoga moves. it turns out there is also classified information there and people asking for favors while she's secretary of state that then were procured and secured. >> but they weren't asking her directly in this latest batch of e-mails. >> so she's not responsible for what the people below her do? cheryl mills? >> she's responsible for her staff doing what every administration i've ever covered has done. >> helped to give mineral rights to people in countries -- >> outside favors? >> okay. then according to clinton cash, the movie and the book, her husband's speaking fees went like this in the time she was secretary of state. maybe a coincidence. but he had again president eight years before. he was a pretty noteworthy guy that people wanted to hear. why did that happen? why after he's visited the country, do some of their friends get these favors? i think these are legitimate

questions that affect people. but we're not going to get coverage on it. >> we're a little bit over. we explained why they affect people. >> it affects people because, look, people already believe that mrs. clinton cannot be trusted. that is clear in everybody's polling including the bloomberg's polls. the way one comported herself as secretary of state, a pretty unremarkable record, is the best view how she would operate as president. and this administration has promised to be the most trans parent ever. and she was part of this administration. people want accountability, transparency and people should care. everything they hate about the very corrupt system that's not transparent and not accountable where they think the insiders benefit and this is a special set of rules for them applies most to hillary clinton. >> i almost never want to correct you on polls. i said her honest and trustworthy number have gotten worse compared to donald trump.
