we initially learned the dnc were impacted but now it seems the hacking extended to the democratic governor's association and others. the paper sited democrats involved in the fbi investigation. the personal accounteds of clinton campaign officials and party operatives are also said to have been targeted. u.s. national security officials say they're confident russian intelligence agencies hacked the dnc. the content of some e-mails forced top dnc staffers including chair debbie wasserman schultz to resign on the eve of her party's convention. e-mails from hillary clinton's state department staff are once again putting her family's foundation in the spotlight. here is nbc's kristen welker. >> reporter: state department e-mails raising fresh questions about the relationship between the clinton family foundation and secretary clinton's state department. one, dated 2009, a clinton foundation executive e-mailed

top. this comes on the heels of the economic policy speech donald trump made on monday. at a campaign rally in florida last night, donald trump launked an attack against hillary clinton for having the father of the orlando nightclub shooter seated behind her at a campaign event earlier this week. >> wasn't it terrible when the father of the animal that killed the wonderful people in orlando was sitting with a big smile on his face right behind hillary clinton? and by the way, including a lot of the people here, how many of you people know me? a lot of you people know me, right? when you get those seats, you sort of know the campaign. so when she said well, we didn't know. he knew. they knew. but how would you -- how did you like that picture? >> but shortly after saying those words, trump drew his own scrutiny. disgraced mark foley was sitting

behind the republican nominee during the rally. foley was forced to resign his seat back in 2006 after he became embroiled in a scandal over suggested e-mails and internet messages to congressional pages. thomas roberts reached out to foley after the rally and asked him if he is a trump supporter and voting for him. foley replied, yes, he's been a friend of mine for 30 years and one of my biggest contributors. trump donated $8,500 to foley between 1997 and 2006. nbc news has reached out to ask whether the trump campaign knew foley was attending the rally. the campaign did not immediately respond. nbc news does know however that several of the seats in the rows behind trump did have reserve signs. >> also at his rally in florida last night, donald trump tackled the subject of foreign policy and while discussing the war in iraq, he made these claims about president obama. >> we unleashed fury all over

though so far none have been filed. >> thank you. authorities in canada say they foiled an alleged suicide bomb plot on a major canadian city. details are still coming in, but so far the government says it received credible information of a potential terrorist threat in southern ontario. according to the cbc, the suspect detonated one device and was planning to detonate another when police shot him and killed him. that according to information reportedly given to the suspect's family by police. authorities believe he was acting alone. the man in his early 20s was arrested last year for alleged ties to terrorist activity. he was under a court order not to associate with any extremist association. at least two dozen people are injured including several firefighters after a massive fire rocked an apartment building in maryland overnight. more than 160 firefighters were on the scene battling the three-alarm fire in silverspring. they made numerous rescues in heavy fire conditions.

authorities say the fire was fueled by natural gas and caused significant damage. several surrounding buildings were also damaged as spokesperson for the montgomery county fire and ems says debrises indicate the cause of the fire was a possible explosion. over 90 people have been displaced and a temporary sherlt has been set up for affected residents. the man known as the grim sleeper serial killer has been sentenced to death. he was convicted on ten counts on first degree murder for killing nine women and one teenage girl between 1985 and 2007. many of the victims were prostitutes. more than 15 family members of victims spoke during the emotional sentencing while franklin has denied any role in the killings, he is suspected in other unsolved slayings. still ahead on "way too early" -- one of chris christie's former allies will go on trial in the bridge scandal. and there was an alleged coverup

welcome back to "way too early." chris christie can't seem to shake the george washington bridge scandal. according to newly released court documents a christie aid sent a text message to the colleague while the governor was speaking at a news conference in december 2013 saying the governor quote flat out lied when she denied that senior staff and his campaign manager were involved in the scandal. christie consistently said he knew nothing about the lane closures that prosecutors say were meant to create traffic jams after the mayor declined to endorse christie's re-election bid. yesterday christie poured cold

people to their destination in the safest and most effective and efficient means possible. we'll continue to provide that high caliber of service that we've become known for. again, the technology outage was an incident. it's not who we are. and we'll recover. >> let's get more on that and the morning's other business stories. want to go to cnbc who joins us now live from london. good morning. >> good morning to you. listen, we're still following up from this delta saga with all the outages that we experienced here over the last couple days. in fact, more than 2,000 flights having been cancelled as of yesterday. so, it's a very, very big portion of flights that are cancelled from what we're looking at. the delta ceo was asked in an interview with a.p. about his thoughts on the situation. he was asked about whether or not there was some false expectations from passengers given that he and other people in management have been talking so much about the airline's

record days without cancellations. he says it doesn't reflect the quality of delta services they provide. he was asked about short-term impact on bookings. look, it's simply been too short a time frame to determine what the impact is going to be. when he was asked about the longer term impact he went on to say that he's sure that there are customers who in the short term they're going to start booking away from us, but he doesn't know the numbers yet. now, today also we're looking at a story with regards to campa n champagne growering. 2016 has not been good for the people growing the champagne grapes. it's been the lowest since 1980s. it's due to severe frost, rot and mildew as well. apparently there's mildew epidemic taking place sweeping a lot of these champagne areas in europe. some producers have been taking in something like 70% less of their would be harvest due to

welcome back to "way too early." some sad news to report. >> john sanders, long-time espn broadcaster has passed away. an emotional hannah storm delivered the news on "sportscenter" yesterday. >> i have some shocking and sad news to report to you. our generous and talented and beloved colleague john saunders has died. john is one of the most familiar on air faces at espn. you know him. he has been at espn for nearly 30 years covering college

football, basketball, the nhl in addition to of course hosting this center "sportscenter" and most recently a fixture on the sports reporters. >> saunders a native of canada had been with espn for nearly 30 years and was a founding member of the jimmy v. foundation board. he leaves behind a wife and two daughters. there's no word yet on the cause of death. john saunders was 61 years old and he will be missed. that will do it for "way too early."
