would suffice for jordan's bachelor party. i don't need a sword, i'm a firemaid. ding dong! i'm going to give this place a killer review. i don't know, i just always thought maybe my bachelor party would be a little less g-rated. wench! ahhh! ahhh hahaha... oooh! party time! party boy! ok, ok. mm hm, party time. hmm, mmm, mmm... thank you for your time today. we'll get links out for the peter navarro interview and evan mcmullin because i'm looking at your tweets now. thank you for those. the nice ones anyway. my colleague, kate snow, picks things it right now. >> the nice one, i love it. did you stay up as late as i did last night? >> i had to cut it at 10:30. >> i was watching gymnastics
8:01 am
until midnight hanging out. >> you're a true believer. >> i am. thomas roberts, thanks so much. good morning to everyone out there. i'm kate snow. donald trump said it on seven separate occasions just yesterday, and in interview after interview, rally after rally, he repeated the claim president obama, he said, the founder of isis. >> it's getting stronger, it's getting bigger, and i've been saying that barack obama is the founder. and i'll tell you what, barack obama, number one, is incompetent and, number two, remember this, number two he is the founder in a true sense. >> some people are saying maybe not the founder, but possibly he's an enabler where i think he might get some agreement even on the democrat side. >> well, i'd call him a founder. >> after all that, though, today
8:02 am
he says that was all just sarcasm. the new message from twitter, quote, isis gained tremendous strength during hillary clinton's term as secretary of state. when will the dishonest media report the facts! that as we get ready for some new key polls this hour out of battleground states with 88 days to go until election day. let's begin it all with nbc's katy tur, she's back here in new york with me on set, a rare occasion. what's behind the switch in explanation, no, it was just sarcasm? >> i don't know. you'll have to ask donald trump that. the reality is, as you just pointed out, he said seven separate times yesterday that president obama was the founder of isis. going on to say hillary clinton was the co-founder of isis. hugh hewitt gave him an out. he said are you trying to say this is a vacuum, just as you saw eric boling do. no, no, no, i mean he is the founder of isis. and today, presumably because
8:03 am
his aides are telling him, donors, confidants, maybe he was watching morning news this morning seeing unfavorable coverage, coming out and saying it was sarcasm. remember, he did the same thing when it came to russia hacking into hillary clinton's e-mail. that day when he called for russia to find those e-mails, i gave him an out. i said do you understand what you're saying, does that not give you pause. he said it did not. it's a pattern, he does this quite often. >> there's been some back and forth overnight, lots of e-mails about whether or not he's having a meeting, a key meeting with some supporters, whether there was sort of a moment now where they want a correction from him. >> so that meeting is happening in florida, we're told. donald trump is not there. it's his campaign and the rnc. the rnc is pushing back on this. sean spicer is saying, oh, my god, the rnc is meeting with donald trump's campaign in a battleground state. that is not unusual, of course they're going to have those meetings. the circumstances around this
8:04 am
meeting, though, are unusual. they have never had a nominee so who forcefully pushes back against the party and who says what many call outrageous thing after outrageous thing dominating headlines, anything most normal candidate would not touch calling the president of the united states a founder of a terrorist organization. so the conversations between the campaign and the party are not comfortable right now. they are uncomfortable, because the party is saying you have got to tone down your candidate. you've got to find a way to rein him in, get him back on message. if he goes down, the rest of the party could go down with him and they are worried about the senate races more than anything else, because if they lose control of the senate and hillary clinton wins, it's a democratic agenda all the way. if they lose control of the senate and donald trump wins, it's still going to be difficult for donald trump to get any legislation to pass. so they are trying very hard to find a way to balance their support of trump, get the campaign on the same page and also protect their interests.
8:05 am
the problem, and we say this every day, the candidate does not listen. >> to the people around him? >> yes. >> katy tur, thanks so much. good to see you in new york. >> thank you. >> appreciate it. we could learn a lot more today about hillary clinton's 2015 finances. nbc's kristen welker covers the clinton campaign. kristen, hillary clinton expected to release her tax returns today. what are we looking for? >> well, look, we know that secretary clinton is expected to release her 2015 tax returns. and tim kaine is expected to release ten years of his tax returns. we should note we have the past ten years of secretary clinton's tax returns as well and we're basically going to see how much they paid in taxes, the percentage that they paid, where they earned their money, did she give any paid speeches in 2015, for example, but this is a political tactic as well, kate. it's about turning up the heat on donald trump to release his tax returns, something that he has said he can't do because they're current low being audited. of course billionaire businessman and clinton
8:06 am
surrogate warren buffett has said my taxes are being audited as well but i'm happy to release them if donald trump does. this comes as the clinton campaign is releasing a new web video. it features conservatives and republicans who also call on him to release his tax returns. they're really trying to speak to those working class, blue collar voters who are critical to winning this election, critical to winning the rust belt and key swing states. it's the clinton campaign's way of essentially painting donald trump as a fraud on one of the key issues that he talks about, which is his ability to turn the economy around because he's a businessman. their argument is, hey, let's see your tax returns. this is a critical part of understanding what you have earned, how you've earned it and how much you've given back to the federal government. so we are waiting for those tax returns to come out. again, we expect them as early as today and ready to analyze them when we do. >> this week a lot of attention on those e-mails that came out involving conversations between state department officials and
8:07 am
people at the clinton foundation. what's the latest on that? >> well, right. and those e-mails raised questions about whether there was too much coziness between the clinton foundation and the state department. the clinton campaign came out very early this week and said absolutely the e-mails do not suggest that and we are hearing from the state department now. i'll read you a little bit of a statement that was released from the state department yesterday which reads, quote, the department's actions under secretary clinton were taken to advance administration policy as set by the president and in the interest of american foreign policy. the state department is not aware of any actions that were influenced by the clinton foundation. this is one of the issues, though, kate, that continues to dog secretary clinton particularly on the issue of trust and that is one of her big vulnerabilities heading into the fall, kate. >> all right, nbc's kristen welker following the democrats. thanks so much. we are waiting for a new nbc news/wall street journal/marist poll as we head into the weekend. who knows political polling
8:08 am
better than nbc news senior political editor mark murray. mark, about a half an hour from now, 20 minutes from now we think we'll get new numbers. what are we expecting to find out and what are we looking for? >> kate, the polls -- the states that we decided to poll are colorado, we have virginia, north carolina and florida. and what these four states have in common, these are your more diverse states with diverse populations as well as those that have a lot of college educated whites in them. the last time we went into the field right before the conventions in these same four states, hillary clinton had a lead between the mid-single digits and high single digits in all four of them. these are all states that, you know, are the path to 270 electoral votes. and so i'm going to be watching particularly for what the numbers are in florida. if hillary clinton ends up winning florida, it really eliminates the paths that donald trump has to 270 electoral votes. also noteworthy will be north carolina. if hillary clinton ends up
8:09 am
winning north carolina, then donald trump has to win pennsylvania. earlier this week, we ended up releasing poll results in iowa, ohio and pennsylvania. in iowa, hillary clinton was ahead by 4 points, ohio, five points, and in pennsylvania, 11 points. >> i was going to mention, we had those out earlier this week. so we have some idea where the other states stand but we are waiting for those others that come out just shortly. take a step back for us, perspective, historically. we're in august, how accurate is polling in august based on -- compared to what actually happens in november? >> yeah, kate. on the one hand you're right. we're 88 days out from the election. there still is time. there are going to be different news stories. we'll see the poll numbers change, no doubt about it. these poll numbers we're releasing today or we released earlier this week are not going to stay the same, they're not going to be static. on the other hand, there have been political scientists who have crunched the numbers and find that if you are leading in the polls two weeks after the last convention, you have actually won every presidential contest going back to 1952.
8:10 am
and so -- >> wow! >> i do think -- and again, there are a lot of different ways how you can crunch these numbers, but it is meaningful to be ahead at this stage of the contest. it doesn't mean that things won't change. but there is a meaningful sense that once the dust has settled from the conventions, you've seen the numbers go up and down, some of the bounces have come, that the numbers are significant. of course we still have the debates. there might be another twist and turn in this race. >> you think? >> yeah, but in some ways we shouldn't just dismiss all of these numbers and say, well, they're going to change and they don't really matter because it's august, because sometimes they actually do matter. >> sorry, i don't mean to joke, but there have been a lot of twists and turns. i'm sure we can probably expect more twists and turns. >> every hour it seems like. >> mark murray, stay with us because we'll be back in a few minutes with that new polling information. up next, the fight for utah. trump says he has problems in that diehard red state. how religious freedom plays in and why hillary clinton is making a play for mormon voters.

where we're represented -- having a tremendous problem in utah. now, utah is a different place. i don't know, is anybody here from utah? i mean it's -- i didn't think so. we're having a problem. >> donald trump there acknowledging we're having a problem, that he's struggling in utah, which has traditionally been a red state. hillary clinton is taking advantage of that, reaching out to mormon voters. in an op-ed in deseret news, a newspaper owned -- clinton wrote i have been fighting to defend religious freedom for years. as secretary of state i made it a cornerstone of our foreign policy to protect the rights of religious minorities around the world. after donald trump called for a temporary ban on muslims in the u.s., the mormon church issued a strong statement on religious freedom. former utah senator, bob bennett, was so upset about trump's proposal that on his deathbed the former senator said he wanted to apologize to
8:16 am
muslims. joining me is senator bob bennett's son, jim bennett, who shared that account. jim, you were a registered republican, as i understand it, up until two weeks ago, is that right? >> that's right. i am now an unaffiliated voter. >> why? >> well, i -- the republican party that was near and dear to my heart for most of my adult life bears very little or no resemblance to the party of trump. you know, people had called me a rino, a republican in name only. i decided that i no longer wanted to be a republican even in name as long as donald trump is heading the ticket. >> you told that story so movingly about your father back in may. by the way, our condolences to your family for his passing. >> thank you. >> and i knew him when i covered the senate. wonderful man. what did he say to you? why was he so bothered by trump's proposal on temporarily banning muslims? >> well, he said this when he was really quite emotional as a result of the stroke that he had just suffered.
8:17 am
but my mother pointed out this was not something that came to him only on his deathbed, that he was walking up to people in airports and appall jiegologizi behalf of donald trump for the republican party. so this was something that was very near and dear to him and i think it goes back to his faith. one of the reasons donald trump is having so much trouble in utah is that mormons culturally identify with a history of persecution, with a history of feeling like religious outsiders. and seeing trump label muslims as outsiders i think is really reprehensible to people of my faith. >> what do you hear from your friends, from your neighbors, maybe when you're at church, maybe when you're outside of church. you live there in salt lake city. what do you hear? does anyone support donald trump, who you know? >> yeah, i know some people who are supporting trump. i think the tribal loyalties to the republican party are very strong. i think that trump is still likely to carry the state, but i
8:18 am
think hillary does have a good shot here. >> you do? >> which is astonishing, considering not only is utah been the reddest of red states, we haven't voted for a republican since 1964, but bill clinton came in third in the state of utah in 1992, when he first ran. this is not clinton country. so the fact -- a democrat hasn't won a statewide race in utah for about 25 years. so the fact that any democrat is competitive here is remarkable. but the fact that it's hillary clinton demonstrates just how odious most mormon voters find donald trump. >> bill clinton was in park city last night trying to raise money for his wife. >> right, i heard that. >> i assume you were not there? >> i was not there, no. >> hillary clinton wrote that op-ed trying to make an appeal to people of the mormon faith and she referred to mormon leaders, she referred to people like mitt romney and former senator larry pressler, who have said things criticizing donald trump. do you see that as resonating
8:19 am
with people out there or was it viewed as pandering? >> i think probably the latter more than the former. i don't think it hurt her much, but i don't think it helped her. she was trying too hard. i read it an it was just so larded up with references to mormon leaders and mormon jargon that you got the sense some had mined wikipedia that afternoon to find everything mormon they possibly could. it was like the written equivalent of that particular -- picture of donald trump holding a taco bell saying i love hispanics. >> so where does that leave you? what are you going to do. >> you know, i'm really wrestling with this. my sisters who are in battleground states have both said we've got to vote for hillary to stop trump. i'm hoping that -- i can't get there from here yet. i'm not supporting hillary, but i'm certainly not supporting trump. the threshold to get on the ballot in utah is only $500 and
8:20 am
1,000 signatures so i was toying with the idea of getting on the ballot myself but i don't think that's going to happen. that's three days away. >> will you let us know if that happens, please? >> certainly will. i will make my announcement on msnbc. >> please do. you can do it right now if you'd like? >> if somebody wants to put up $500, i'm in. >> there we go. jim bennett, son of senator bob bennett, appreciate your time this morning. >> thank you. appreciate the opportunity. trump now says he was being sarcastic, but when he called obama the founder of isis, a former ambassador to russia under obama tweeted that it sounded to him like a myth straight out of russian state media. we'll talk to that former ambassador, coming up next. at ally bank, no branches equals great rates. it's a fact. kind of like grandkids equals free tech support.

8:25 am
tweet from donald trump. ratings challenged cnn reports so seriously that i call president obama and clinton the founder of isis and mvp. they don't get sarcasm? joining me now is former u.s. ambassador to the russian federation, msnbc contributor, michael mcfaul. mr. ambassador, you tweeted that trump's remarks about the president echos a myth propag e propagated by russian-controlled media and bloggers. >> first of all, let's underscore for the 10,000th time that it is a myth. it's absurd for anybody to say that. we have our soldiers right now fighting isis and sarcasm 24 hours later, it's just -- it's just crazy that we have to talk this way. but yes, secondly for years now the russian media, bloggers, people on twitter, have made exactly this claim, that barack hussein obama, putting the emphasis on his middle name, is the founder of isis, he supports
8:26 am
isis as a way to undermine their ally, mr. assad. >> why do you think he's saying today that he was being sarcastic, and obviously you don't accept that explanation? >> well, he had so many opportunities, you just played them all, the clips, to explain what he really meant. and his defenders kept saying, well, he didn't mean it literally. and i think maybe after 24 hours of just doubling down and tripling down on this absurd statement, he backed away. so we should give him credit, i guess, for that. but, you know, foreign policy and international security, it's a serious business. it's not a joking business about being sarcastic about these things. it sends signals to our enemies when we say things like this. and i believe when you say things like this, you undermine the commander in chief who is fighting a war against isis. we, the united states, are at war against isis. he's not the founder of this terrorist organization.
8:27 am
>> let me ask you about his more general point, though. over the last eight years, over this administration, isis has grown and there's an argument from plenty of republicans that we -- the administration didn't do enough to contain that radical group. you were part of the obama administration. should the administration have done more? >> that's a very legitimate debate. did obama policies in iraq create per missive conditions for the growth of isis? did the russian support for mr. assad, where i would lay more blame, create permissive conditions for isis to grow in syria. but that's different than saying the president of the united states is the founder of isis. al qaeda grew during the bush administration, as we learned tragically on september 11th. nobody in their right mind would say president bush was the founder of al qaeda. and here i think we just need to be precise about what we're

talking about, especially when we're talking about issues of war and peace regarding the security of americans. >> and the world is listening. you tweet, i was looking at your twitter feed, you tweet in russian all the time. you're tweeting with people over in russia. how do you think his argument that obama is the founder of isis is being read oversees and in russia. >> on russia on my twitter feed, i'm glad you're reading, and especially in russia, if you look at what people said after i tweeted that, the hard-core nationalists, those people that hate the united states of america, cheered. that's what they said. trump is the truth teller, to quote trump. that's what our nationalists are saying. those are the people that accuse us of doing all kinds of evils in the world, including supporting isis, and now they say finally an american has woken up to the fact, alleged fact that we've been talking about all along. that was the essence of the feed last night. >> we started out by saying that
8:29 am
you tweeted and you explained that you believe he was reiterating something that is widely said as a myth in russia. do you think there's a link there? in other words, did donald trump say this over the last 24 hours because it's been said so widely in russia? did he get it from russian conspiracy theorists? >> of course i don't know. my guess is no. i don't think he's some kind of agent for mr. putin getting his talking points from russia. but i do think it's one more policy where mr. trump supports the policies of the russians, of the kremlin, and it's not the only one. he supports revisiting whether crimea should be part of russia or not. the only leader in the world, the only person in america that i know that thinks about that. he has talked about undermining, rethinking our relationship with our nato allies. these are all policies that the kremlin supports. >> ambassador michael mcfaul, former as bam dor ss dor to rus

campaign stopped advertising in colorado a few weeks ago. then in florida, it's actually a little bit tighter race. hillary clinton is ahead by 5 points there. it was a seven-point lead for hillary clinton in our most recent poll so that is a little good news for the trump campaign that in a way florida got a little bit tighter, but clinton still in the lead in a state that is all but essential on the electoral map for donald trump an his chances. north carolina actually might be the most surprising result of all. it shows hillary clinton up by 9 points there. she had a lead basically mid-single digits there when we polled in july. it is worth noting that it's just not hillary clinton who's doing well in north carolina, democrats up and down the ballot. you have the republican governor pat mccrory trailing by seven points and the democratic challenger, debra ross, is leading senator richard burr in that state by two, so those numbers are very good news for democrats in north carolina. finally in virginia, you have hillary clinton up by 13 points.

another state where hillary clinton has decided not to advertise, at least for the time being. so these numbers are very, very good news for the clinton campaign. >> she pulled money out of virginia as i recall, right? she had been doing some advertising and decided she doesn't need to, now that she's got a 13-point lead. >> you look at hillary clinton's numbers and she's in the mid-40s. what is really striking is that you have donald trump in the 30s. either low 30s in states like colorado and virginia or high 30s elsewhere. and so, you know, hillary clinton isn't above 50% in any of our polling, whether it's a two-way race or a four-way race, but you're really seeing the drag on donald trump. of course it is worth noting the time frame of these polls. they were conducted august 4th to august 10th so two weeks after the democratic convention. then some very tough news cycles for donald trump over the last two weeks. >> that's after he made all his comments about the gold star family, for example. >> that's right. and one other point, kate, you look at all the ballots ground

state polling that we've released throughout the entire week, including in iowa, including in ohio, including in pennsylvania, and hillary clinton is ahead in all of those states from as little as 4 points in iowa to as many as 14 points in colorado. >> not one state where he's holding a lead at this point. all right, mark murray, our senior political editor, thanks so much for breaking it down for us. appreciate it. have a happy friday. >> thanks. you too, kate. >> for more on everything that's happening in politics right now and this week, let's bring in "new york times" political writer, john harwood. nice to see you. >> hey, kate. >> let's start with those polls. not great news for donald trump. >> no. and i think as mark murray was just indicating, it may be time to take colorado and virginia off the board as real contested battlegrounds in this election. donald trump wasn't particularly strong in the west during the republican primaries. a double-digit margin in colorado at this phase of the campaign is very worrisome for him and obviously in the state
8:37 am
of virginia, which president obama carried twice, she now has the former governor, current senator tim kaine as her running mate. that suggests that virginia is not going to be contested. so it increases the pressure on donald trump in all the other places, florida within 5 points, not too bad. north carolina 9 points. as mark said, that's a surprising number and a robust advantage for hillary clinton. but he's got to start picking up his game in a whole series of battlegrounds, down double digits in the state of pennsylvania in our poll this week. down of course also in iowa and ohio. so the number of places where he can break through and change this map is pretty small at this stage. >> we're expecting woe might get a little bit of news on hillary clinton this afternoon, john. we've withbeen talking about th potential of release of her tax return from last year, the one we all filed in april, 2015. what do you know from your reporting at this point about what we might see? >> well, what we expect to see
8:38 am
is effective tax rates in the range of what she has shown in the most recent years. for example, around 35% effective federal tax rate on her income. charitable deductions -- charitable donations of about 10% of her income. that would be in line with past years. what we don't know is what the income number is going to be. she had very robust speech income along with her husband, former president clinton, in 2014. i believe their gross income in that year was $28 million. i would expect that that will be much lower this year because she was campaigning and president clinton was campaigning for her, but that's the big question mark out there. >> that certainly would be what bernie sanders would be scrutinizing in those tax returns. >> and donald trump would be scrutinizing them if he had released his own tax returns but he doesn't have that attack weapon. >> and as kristen welker
8:39 am
reported, the clinton campaign is yogz this moment to reinforce their message donald trump should release his as well. let me ask you about one more thing. yesterday conservative republican congressman steve king made some surprising remarks saying that he could work with hillary clinton. he's not the only republican seeming to say things like that behind closed doors. >> well, we know that republicans could work with hillary clinton when she was a senator because they did. we know that some of them could work with her as secretary of state, because they did. and what i think that statement reflects is the reorientation everyone is coming to right now to the increasing probability that hillary clinton will be elected. and so if you realize that that's the probable outcome of the election, you've got to situate yourself so that you can be effective in that context. and so, for example, marco rubio made a statement yesterday in florida saying, well, god forbid if hillary clinton is elected and democrats control the
8:40 am
senate, that's an argument for his election in florida to try to heparins keep the senate, that includes as a premise the idea that hillary clinton may win the election. the more republicans say that, the more they believe that, the worse donald trump's chances get. >> cnbc's john harwood. always great to see you, my friend. >> you bet. >> have a good weekend. >> you too. beyond the big did they really say that, this season has been one for the fact checkers. i want to bring in the executive director of politifact. nice to see you. >> thank you. >> we've had a lot to fact check this week. donald trump on monday released his economic plan in detroit. he gave a speech. he said taxes are one of the biggest differences in the race. he criticized hillary clinton's tax plan. then let's listen to some more of what he had to say. >> hillary clinton, who has spent her career voting for tax increases, plans another massive
8:41 am
job-killing, $1.3 trillion tax increase. big increase. one of the biggest ever. her plan would tax many small businesses by almost 50%. >> fact check that for us, aaron. is that true? >> it is not true. we actually rated that claim mostly false. the top tax bracket right now is around 40%. employers, small businesses, could contribute another 4% in medicare taxes. that's 44 or 43%. what hillary clinton wants to do is add a 4% surcharge that gets you potentially to a tax rate of about 47%, but the big key is who pays that. donald trump said many small businesses would be paying this tax. in reality in order to qualify for this surcharge that hillary clinton is proposing, you need to have income of more than $5 million a year. when you think of small businesses, you don't think of many that make that much money. in fact when we tried to crunch
8:42 am
the numbers, we came to a number that's probably less than 0.02% of small businesses that would be affected by hillary clinton's tax proposal. now, he's right that hillary clinton is proposing to raise taxes, primarily on the wealthy, and he's proposing to cut taxes. but he's wrong in the specific claim about small businesses. >> okay. let's flip over to the other side. here's what hillary clinton had to say, talking about undocumented immigrants paying $12 billion a year into social security. >> my priority are violent criminals, people suspected of any kind of connection to terrorism, not hard-working mothers and fathers and people who go to work, help support this economy, pay $12 billion a year into social security. >> do they pay $12 billion a year into social security, true or false? >> we would say half true on the truth-o-meter at politifact.
8:43 am
clinton is relying on the social security report from 2010. the big key is if you're working, an undocumented worker who is working, you contribute to social security but you don't get the benefits. when you crunch the numbers, clinton is omitting one key factor, that roughly half of all the money that is coming in is being paid by the employers. so when you give it a straight line look and you kind of look at the overall picture, the number really drops down to 5 to $6 billion, not $12 billion. so she's right, undocumented immigrants contributing to the system, but she's off on the number. >> overstating it essentially is what you're saying. >> that's right. >> aaron, we could do this all day. thanks so much, appreciate your time. >> no problem. up next, a terrifying plane ride. turbulence so bad it landed 24 people in the hospital. >> all of a sudden like out of
8:44 am
