i'm ayman mohyeldin. am joy returns next week. in milwaukee, violent protests erupted overnight. they say the man was apred with a semi auto weapon and had a

lengthy arrest record but it is not clear if he had his firearm drawn at the time of the shooting. some have set fires overnight and the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative duty which is standard practice. we get the latest from our affiliate wtmj. >> reporter: ayman, people are waking up to devastation in their neighborhood. this is the city's northwest side. there was looting and violence overnight. you could see some of that happening right here at this bp gas station. this is where the majority of the violence happened. three other businesses, including a bank and beauty store and auto parts store were also hit. but at the gas station here, workers were trapped inside while the violence was happening. they go only watch as people threw rocks and bricks, trying to break in. while the clerk stood behind the bulletproof gas at the cash register.

finally someone set fire to the building. they were trapped inside until an armed vehicle came in and they were able to get to safety. there has been escalating racial tensions between the gas station and teens across the street throughout the summer. teens had been clashing with police and it spilled over into the gas station. a worker at one time drew a gun and fired it into the air and caused protesters by black lives matter just a few weeks ago so things have been heating up within this neighborhood. >> the city has watched this particular neighborhood throughout the entire summer be a powder keg. this entire community has sat back and witnessed how milwaukee, wisconsins has become the worse place to live for african-americans in the entire country. >> this is on the northwest side and people have taken it mongs them -- amongst themselves to come and clean up and they have

put a call out throughout the city to come over to this side of the city and pick up and clean it up so people could go back to their lives. ayman, back to you. >> police are shooting for the fatal shooting of a police officers in eastman outside of atlanta. officer tim smith was responding to a call about a suspicious person and was shot and killed after exiting his vehicle. suspect fled and remains at large. and in new york, police are searching for a motive after the leader of a mosque was killed in broad daylight. he and his associate were both shot in the head by a gunman in the ozone park neighborhood in queens on saturday and both later died. followers gathered to hold a rally for justice claiming the kill gz were an act of hate but the authorities say there is no evidence they were targeted for their faith. tammy leitner is involving the latest developments from the new

york newsroom. are police any closer to tracking down a motive or a suspect? >> ayman, we know at this point police are not calling this a hate crime. as far as what happened, we know this was bold. it happened during the day, a busy street during the daylight. the two men were in religious attire and witnesses saw a man run up behind the two men and his assistant imam, both men were shot in the head. now keep in mind, this happened in ozone park which is a working class section of queens. it has a large population of bangladeshi migrants and community leaders are saying that muslims are concerns, even though this is not being called a hate crime, they are worried. and some of them are blaming the anti-muslim hatred on trump. now trump's campaign released a statement this afternoon and it says to blame any political candidate for these murders is a highly irresponsible and obviously politically motivated

attempt to push an agenda. mr. trump opposes crime and violence in any form and as president will work with law enforcement and community leaders to create an environment where tragedies like this will never happen again. now, we do know there was surveillance video that caught the suspect leaving the area and he did have a weapon in his hand. >> tammy leitner following this story for us. in louisiana, the severe weather is blamed for three deaths and officials say more than a thousand people have been rescued from the floodwaters. some towns have been cut off by the rising water. gabe gutierrez joins me from baton rouge. good to have you with us, what is the latest in terms of the rescue efforts that have been ongoing. >> reporter: hi there, ayman. you could see behind me the water has been rising and people are bringing in boats, neighbors, and good samaritans trying to go into the neighborhoods and rescue some of the people. look here to my left and others have gathered here waiting on

word from residents. this is in east baton rouge, some of the hardest areas are livingston parish and that is to the east. and some of the residents that we've spoken with, they came here to east baton rouge and this was all dry late last night. overnight they got more rain and the rivers have started to rise. hold on one second. there is a vehicle coming in right there so let's move out of the way. so overnight, the rain really pounded this area and this water rose so quickly and you could see it is really impassable at this point. so as you mentioned, three people have been confirmed dead in louisiana. more than a thousand water rescues so far. more than 2,000 rescuers are on hand and from many different encies, including national guard and the coast guard and local law enforcement agencies and they have worked overnight trying to get this thing under control. now flood watches are in effect through today. several rivers are expected to

crest throughout the day so this area dealing with an unfolding natural disaster athe this point, ayman. >> thank you for that update in louisiana. we now turn to politics where last night donald trump addressed supporters at a rally in connecticut where he turned his attention to hillary clinton to set his sights on a different opponent. >> i'm not running against crooked hillary clinton. i'm running against the crooked media. cnn is disgusting. and by the way, their ratings are going down -- and the good news i put down failing at new york times. the newspaper is going to hell. >> reporter: trump's attack comes after they published this story yesterday about his campaign struggling to keep trump on track. according to the times, quote, the effort to save mr. trump from imhfl has plainly failed and his has repeatedly advisers

and his allies his willingness cho change and adapt but haze grown only more molla tile and prone to prove case. and good to have you both with us. i want to play for you a sound bite from mike pence on fox and friends. take a listen. >> isn't the sarcastic excuse getting a bit old? >> well, no, i don't think it is getting old at all, chris. donald trump made his way through a competitive primary because he spoke not like your regular politician, because plainly like an everyday american. >> so how do you get the trump campaign on track and isn't this particular argument, this sarcasm argument that works well in the primary, that the criticism that it is ineffective in the general election. >> i wouldn't say it is ineffective, but stay on

message, when you are sarcastic, you are going off your message. there are a reason we do polling because it motivates pollers and it could move them and you move the independent and the democrats to vote for you and not vote for hillary clinton but the more he goes off message and now they have a reason to say i have a reason to vote for donald trump. and you call it sarcasm or i call it hyper bowl and bole and to protect those coming to america and that is building a wall and what he wants to accomplish. and hillary clinton was at the state department when isis began to grew. >> but he said obama and clinton are the founders of isis. >> that is correct. so he goes too far with the hyperbole and i think it is donald being donald and everything else in his life it is huge and it is bigger than he's been before and he is taken it too far. and the message was great -- put isis at hillary clinton's

doorstep and blame her for that and for benghazi and the terrible leadership at the state department and go after the e-mails but the more he does this, the tougher it is to go back on message and take advantage of her mistake. >> amish, we've heard from trump how he will lose only if there is cheating, but what efforts have the campaign made to organize advertise and get out the vote in key states to secure a key victory. >> that is something that at the heart of the issue that the is have -- the trump campaign is having and that hillary clinton has set up shop with ads going up and putting effort into getting out the vote record and he is still trying to get his campaign together in the key battle ground states and the effort to try to go after people and say that you want to be an election observer for trump, but he could really want people to go out to the polls and see if there is some sort of voter fraud which most people in most

states that's not something they are concerned about but it could be that he is trying to collect names and numbers and trying to get this voter mobilization done that way so the rnc has been trying to help him and saying from the very beginning, that they expected trump to rely on them heavily for get out the vote efforts because he didn't have a campaign that was focused on that. he was focused on a campaign that did well with the authentic moments that his supporters like that he is calling hillary clinton the founder of isis and that your other guest called hyperbole that his personality will get people to the polls but hillary clinton is focusing on going out there and doing what they do best which is knowing the voters and getting them to the polls. >> and i want to play another clip from last night. take a listen. >> the u.s. department of education reports connecticut is expected to have the nation's third fastest decline in

students enrolled in high school over the next ten years. it will probably be number one fairly soon. congratulations, people. hey, am i depressing everybody? the good news is you can't move, because you can't get anything for your house so don't worry about it. >> and we have seen trump drop in the polls since the convention and his focus on american decline. why continue with this same message? do you think this will bring supporters to the polls in november or could it backfire and discourage people? >> well i think -- go ahead. >> yeah, i think it is part of his overall message that he is the person who can bring needed change. if he is going to make that argument, i guess it stands to reason that he wants to emphasize how bad things have gotten. the problem is that in presidential politics at least, it has tended, oftentimes, to be the more optimistic candidate who prevails. trump instead painting this grim

picture for people of their own state in many cases. and i'm just not sure that is a winning strategy. >> and let me just ask if all of three of you quickly about the issue with the taxes, the clintons release their tax return and making it unprecedented, 38 years of tax returns being released and despite that, trump said he will not release his taxes until an audit is completed by the irs. is this going to add more pressure on trump to release his taxes and should he? >> i think, every day he doesn't do it, is a day he gets attacks on the message and takes away from his message. when he decided to run he should figure out he had to do this to run and get through the campaign. >> and amish. >> i'm in indiana right now and covering mike pence and mike pence yesterday, reporters while he was visiting a farmer's market, we asked him several times, are you going to release your tax returns and he went quiet and in an interview, he said i will release my tax

returns and his spokesperson said he will do it before the election day. so to me, not only is hillary clinton releasing her tax returns and putting pressure on trump, but if his own running mate has shown he could break with trump when it comes to endorsing paul ryan before trump did, and if his own running mate releases his tax returns the pressure is on for trump to do that and it will make voters question what is he hiding. >> nilla, your final thoughts on this. >> i think it is right that the pressure is building on trump, and whether he yields to that pressure is a different question. in a way his entire campaign has been built around defiance, defiance of republican establishment and conventional wisdom so it wouldn't surprise me if he could with stand the pressure to make sure the point that he could. >> thank you very much. and coming up, trump is asking volunteers to help police the polls this november and we'll take a deep dive into what that could mean and if what he

donald trump speech to pennsylvania supporters on friday included a warning that has been appearing in recent weeks questioning the legitimacy of the presidential election. >> the only way we could lose, in my opinion, i really mean this, pennsylvania, is if cheating goes on. >> trump calls on law enforcement and supporters to show up at the polls on election day and followed up on a day for volunteers to sign up to be a trump election observer. joining me now is arri berman and author of give us the ballot, the modern struggle for voting rights in america. >> good to see you. >> good to have you with us.

and let's talk about the issue of voter fraud. is there any evidence to suggest what trump is talking about, not just in pennsylvania but across the board of rigged elections and voter fraud in the united states in a serious way? >> no. so everything that trump has been saying about voter fraud and rigged elections is completely wrong. i just want to be very, very clear about this because he keeps saying it so i think it is important to debunk it. voter fraud is a small problem in voter elections. there are few cases in decades and voter impersonation which is the only fraud of voter i.d. would stop is incredibly rare. since 2000 there have been a billion votes cast and only 31 cases of voter impersonation. so you are much more likely to be struck by lightning than you are to impersonate another voter at the polls. >> and besides voter impersonation, other irregul irregulari

irregularities, is there anything in cities or national campaigns like that. >> there are off cases of things that happen. there are small absentee ballot fraud or problems with voter machines or different ways to create a fraudulent vote but not large enough to swing a election and even then on the large scale, you are going to get caught. so no one is rigging this election to try to defeat donald trump. it is just not happening. >> so let's talk about some the issues that he is calling for in terms of having volunteers and his supporters and they observe the elections an keep eye -- and keep eyes on the polls so to speak and is there any concern of what is amount toss voter intimidation. >> there is huge concern about it. >> why. >> because he said he is monitoring the election to stop hillary clinton from rigging the election and so he is saying that there is voter fraud going on and this could lead to voter intimidation and voter profiling

and he said there is cheating going in on in pennsylvania in certain parts of the state and everyone knows what he is talking about. >> what is he talking about? >> about black and brown voters in pennsylvania and pittsburgh. and they are talked about different things, calling mexicans rapists or deporting 11 million people, this is the par for the course for trump and it is very concerning that he is creating an atmosphere that will lead to widespread intimidation and possibly violence, definitely incidents on election day if this is isn't stopped beforehand. >> and is stuff like this unprecedented. in civilian efforts, groups like true the vote in 2012, what was the outcome there and it is unprecedented to have civilian volunteers at polls. >> they have blocked this but there is back to rnc for intimidating voters in new jersey. so they have been blocked from

welcome back, everyone. i'm ayman mohyeldin. am joy returns next week. breaking news out of milwaukee where protests turned violent after a 23-year-old man was shot dead by police earlier that day. police say the man was carrying a stolen handgun while fleeing from a traffic stop. officials are cleaning up after protesters smashed a police car and set multiple fires. the officer involved was placed on administrative duty which is standard procedure. kerry sanders has just arrived on the scene and joins me now from milwaukee with the very latest. good morning to you, kerry. >> reporter: good morning, ayman. with the daylight comes the calm and the clean-up and members of the neighborhood are out here picking up and this is a crime

scene. this is a gas station lit on fire among the angry protesters who came out here and hit several businesses. one of the things that i think is perhaps most interesting is you detailed what took place last night and we don't have a whole lot of those specifics yet. we do know that a 23-year-old was shot and killed by the police. we do know that the mayor said that he had a weapon. the mayor saying the weapon he had was stole nen march and he had a -- stolen in march with a weapon with 23 live rounds in it and he threatened a police officer and he was fleeing. the details, however, of the specifics are still rather murky. we expect to hear more later in afternoon in a press conference from the police department and the mayor when they sort out their investigation. and one of the aspects playing to the narrative we've seen in egypt and the philippines and the mayor said while this happened at 4:00 or 5:00 in the afternoon, it was on social

media and people going on phones and collectively getting people to come out here and bring them together and urging them to actually take place -- or to part in violence. and so that is part of the story here because of the intelligence of the police department, if they were following social media as so many police departments do, they missed this and didn't get enough police officers here in enough time to prevent this from happening. >> ayman. >> we'll be watching that as that develops into a second night and if there are additional upsets. appreciate that update, kerry. and now to donald trump, and the nominee who is expected to talk about the fight against isis when he visited ohio tomorrow. trump is scheduled to appear at a youngstown state university after he began calling president obama the founder of isis, starting with his speech on wednesday night in ft. lauderdale, florida. >> isis -- is honoring president

get out of this situation? >> how do they get out. you know how they get out. they get out. declare sictory and leave. this is a total cat astrophe an you might as well get out now because you are just wasting time -- and lives. >> so malcolm, you know that part of the world very well and you know the iraq conflict in particular very well. how true is it that the withdrawal of troops led to the rise of isis. >> flat out wrong. sorry. in 2007 i wrote a book in iraq about the entire intelligence and terrorist structure of the iraq insurgency. isis existed two years after the invasion of iraq. in 2003 al qaeda and iraq was formed by zarquawi and in 2005 we killed him and then the two follow leaders, nussry and al baghdadi and that led to the

rise of abu backer and tren went to the islamic state and thus isis was born. that organization we fought kaled 4493 u.s. soldiers and it is the disgrace to ignore the actual history. >> and nina, former ambassador to russia, i'll read this out and saying trump's line that obama founded isis echoed exactly a myth propagated by russian state-controlled media and bloggers. does russia believe that u.s. is responsible for the founding of isis. >> i would disagree with him because i any words matter and we know it from trump pronouncement that is matters more than anything and russia never said that barack obama is founder of isis, they were arguing the same way that hugh hewitt was arguing that there was a vacuum created and nothing was stopped and there was no

policy or actual strategy and what not. so even the russians and the better story is trump saying things like even russia is not saying because they understand that the founder is a very specific job done and of course barack obama cannot be blamed for that and hillary clinton for that matter. >> and i want to talk about a point that donald trump said that he would do things differently when it comes to fighting isis. he doesn't give any specifics about what he would do differently than what is happening right now but when you heard donald trump saying he is going to change the fight to -- take the fight to isis or change strategy and what do you think as a national security expert, what do you think that implies? does that mean more american troops on the ground? what are we doing differently. >> i would find it hard to understand precisely what he would do differently than hasn't been tried before. we had complete ground warfare and aerial warfare and

intelligence supremacy in iraq for eight years and we still lost almost 4500 soldiers. we did damage the insurgency. however, he would to have recreate that in seyria, where there is an ongoing conflict and the tactical skillset and we have would have to fight through the assad or the iraqi government and their militia to get to the battle space where this could occur. so i don't think he's thought this threw and he talks in platitudes so it appears he is giving a position of strength. but if we want to get back into a ground war in the middle east on the deck, that is just not the place to start it. our strategy right now, using special operations and surrogate forces is working and we are decimating isis right now. a lot of people don't believe the pentagon, but these are our soldiers on the ground fighting and supporting u.s. objectives and we're meeting those

objectives. >> nina, when leaders from other countries and russia hear the kind of rhetoric and positions that donald trump takes sometimes in ambiguous ways and other times in some scary ways, to quote some others, what do you think their reaction is in terms of this time of american presidency. would they be concerned on the international stage? >> i think they would be concerned but as we discussed early in previous segment is that it is for adversarial powers, it is hard not to take advantage because when you have a fool spouting out ridiculous pronouncements, it is damaging generally for the united states reputation because people look at americans and saying this is what your elections is like, that is what your candidate is like, oh, my god and you claim that you are a great power. >> and i want to ask you quickly, this week donald trump told the miami herald he would support sending those accused of

terrorism to guantanamo bay and putting them on trial. is that practical. any combatants brought to gitmo because he is talking about american citizens. >> he is spouting platitudes and goes where the tv audience would go and where the survivor audience would go to and that is what he does. i don't know if he knows any political or legal implications and he is just saying it because it sounds good to him. >> malcolm, your last thoughts on that, taking u.s. citizens to gitmo. >> he should take up the offer from khan to take that pocket koou constitution and read it. we wrote articles into the constitution to prevent this from happening by british forces. it is against the law and against the constitution. there are oath keepers that claim that is what they force to stop, u.s. soldiers taking u.s.

that indicate somebody who has a full control of what he is saying and certainly as a candidate, leaves a lot to be desired. he's shown emotionally and mentally he is unfit to be president. our letter simply said, look, this campaign is going down the drain and the polls are showing it significantly and he's taken the republican party with him. you have got to cut off his funding. and any discretionary funds that might be there, turn them back to the senators and the congressmen and the state legislators and the governors running for re-election this year. they need the help because he will drag down the entire party. >> and mr. edwards, i want to pick up on the points mr. coleman was talking about but asking you both about it but starting with you, sir, was there one comment or poll result that made you say, this has gone too far, i have to now speak up against donald trump? >> ayman, look, it is not a matter about what policies or

what plr things he says in -- particular things he says in his speech. he fails of the major tests for presidency. competence, intelligence and temperament and judgment. and as tom just said, the problem is not a matter of what he has to say differently, he doesn't have the stability, he doesn't have the emotional stability to be president of the united states. and to have access to nuclear weapons and to be the only person who could nominate somebody to the federal bench or all of the powers that go with the presidency. so it is not about whether he is right or wrong about policy a. or b. or c., the problem is the man himself. and so -- the thing here is not who you vote for afterwards, you cannot let donald trump or anybody like donald trump be president of the united states. >> mr. coleman, same question to you, was there a specific turning point in this campaign that made you say this has gone

too far? >> no, i've witnessed his rhetoric from day one and it is divisive, it has been unknowledgeable. he has alienated practically every segment of the american society. and i might point out, he was never a republican. he supported democrats and in fact he contributed to his own opponent here. and in the process, he captured the nomination. >> so let me -- >> now he is the nominee, but i was going to say this, i would say that donald trump pours gasoline on the republican party and every day he lights a match by his rhetoric that sets it off and mickey and i -- who signed this letter and the other people are just like volunteer firemen trying to come out to put out the fire. and it is. >> and let me ask you about putting out fires. some republicans have gone to far as to urge voters to support hillary clinton while also voting for republicans on some of the down ballot races. would you two go so far as to
