later tonight. >> paul manafort is trying to push back. stories saying he was tied to a pro russia group. where do they stand on this is this. >> reporter: you saw that carefully worded statement when he said he never accepted theesz cash payments, off the books cash payments. i spoke with him and he reiterated he has no links to the russian government. it is something he has been very firm on. you look at ukrainean party officials and it is questions that are dogging the trump campaign. when donald trump does not want to be focusing on this they would rather be turning the spotlight onto hillary clinton. >> thanks. >> hillary clinton and her whole campaign team pounced almost
6:05 am
immediately and they got help from joe biden during his first appearance on the 2016 trail. >> my son, beau, served for a year in iraq. i must tell you that donald trump, i would have thrown my body in front of him. i really mean it, if the judgment was based on trump's decision. >> kristen welker is traveling with them. it was a very personal speech but also kind of a big homecoming for healthcare "hardball" and joe biden. >> it was big, you're absolutely right. she spent a lot of time in scranton.

6:16 am
what i'm trying to piece together in previous statements it seems to be an id logical test. it violates an awful lot of constitutional principal. it will fly in the face of wide variety. here is what i think we should be using. we'll be using cyber security, social networks, investigative means not subjecting them but some kind of a conversation to determine. >> he did not mention sending troops to the middle east but he did talk about easing oil fields. can you do that without troops on the ground? >> of course not. the idea of seizing oil fields is a complete violation of international law. again, it's not the united

states does business and the world. in terms of troops, it won't be 150 thou troops but we'll have to nudge up towards 10,000 troops. we have about 5,000 troops there. the shortcoming is that it's very thin on detail of any kind, no discussion of intelligence. no discussion of the inner agency. >> couldn't they say it might be a violation. maybe it's time to change some of the laws. what we have had so far isn't enough, so many people feeling unsafe. >> yeah, i think the way of addressing lacking security is to take an internasal approach. it also means getting the inner agency to work together better
6:18 am
as the government. it means better intelligence. it means private sector and it needs communication. i think we'll be successful. i didn't hear much of that. he said russia and he said potentially the u.s. could work in a core din nated effort. is that even possible? >> it is possible but there's a big problem with that idea. the name of the problem is assad, the dictator in syria that the russians are supporting. until we find a way to ease him out of power -- and he is using chemical weapons against his people, it's a disaster. i think we would have to find a way to work together getting rid
6:19 am
of assad then we could work together on the isz lammic state problem. it is quite unlikely in the short term. >> isn't it sort of similar, what i'm advocating is this idea that we savings and loans in afghanistan, counter terrorism. there are areas and we should seize them. we'll continue to front russia and when they support a war criminal like assad. the bargain is a transactional bargain but we need to cherry pick one idea and say we'll solve it by going into syria. not going to work. >> thank you.
