but they are talking about his pitch to american and latino citizens. he would be the one to bring back jobs by lowering taxes. also talking about the fact that they reject bigotry and hatred and oppression. and said that he would be the one to crush and destroy isis and end the era of nation building and deliver this nation to a time that it's never seen before in terms of sending him to the white house. and the connection he's try ing to make of his portrayal of pay-for-play as tenure and anything that may have happened with donations for the clinton foundation. hillary clinton is expected to speak within this hour in reno. it was during this speak that donald trump said she was in hiding, but she's yet to come up to bat. we have the camera ready to go for the next hour. >> thanks so much.

we will begin there with donald trump as we await hillary clinton. i want to public in a man who is at trump tower this morning for a meeting with african-american and la ttino activists meeting with donald trump. ashley bell is the senior strategist and director of african-american political engagement for the rnc. nice to see you in new york. you said he just added that based on something someone told him in the room this morning. >> we had a great conversation with our program. it always comes back to education. education is a key to opportunity. it's great to hear him say education as well as job creation when he talks to black voters. >> i was looking at the

transcript in advance. that was in there. i think he ad libbed the mention of education. i want to ask you. cameras were only allowed in for a few minutes of the meeting. we were there for part of what donald trump said. let me play that and we'll talk about it. >> very important part of the message for me is the african-american community. they have really been let down by hillary clinton and the democrats. >> he keeps saying that. they have been let down by hillary clinton. what specific ways has hillary clinton let down african-american voters. >> several. the clintons have a unique relationship just because of their time in office in the past. when you look at american history then we go back to this ads. >> that's her husband, not her.

>> hillary clinton, to her cred, was a an active first lady. she gave lots of speeches and was criticized for it. we need -- we are all working better to fix the message. let's look at this ad. hillary clinton. dropped an ad today with clansman in it. >> we can show it. we have a little bit of b roll to give people a sense. it's a dramatic ad. >> it's over the top. >> it starts with the kkk member talking about his support for donald trump. how do you combat that? >> as an african-american, this upsets me more, party aside. the only time you see kkk on tv is when democrats use them in campaign ads. >> i have to just punch back the way the democrats would. that is a person who supports donald trump. they didn't make it up. >> you have an african-american reporter finding a clansman and asking him do you like donald trump. this is so ridiculous and over

the top. if we want to stomp out hatred, quit going to rallies. they shouldn't be a part of our political process and accept the different level of tolerance. let them go away into history where they belong and quit bringing them back. >> she's giving a speech and we're waiting for hillary clinton to come out in nevada, where she's expected to take on what she calls the alt-right. varying definitions, but white nationalism is part of the movement. she's going to bring that up, much as she did in this ad, and link it to your candidate. >> once donald trump starts talking about issues, the democratic plan is to plug their ears with hatred, very traumatic images for african-americans. there are many of us who find this traumatic when you see the kshs kk on tv. if hillary clinton wants to win

this election, she needs to win it the right away. talk about your policies and we'll talk about ours. let voters decide. >> in fairness, her campaign would say they are doing it because this movement is out there and they are saying some things that conservatives don't agree with. >> i remember when obama was running. people were trying to attack him. both sides need to put this down. the bottom line is that donald trump has disavowed many times the kkk. we have heard in this last speech we're going to end hatred in this country. let's move on and talk about the issues. every time we allow a presidential candidate to talk about these traumatic issues of clansman, we spend less time talking about the issues that can affect the community, strengthen our communities and families. let's focus on what really happened. >> anything else out of that meeting that we ought to know?

>> i think wrour going to see a candidate who is finding his voice. you're going to see donald trump giving more speeches to more diverse crowds. so stay tuned. >> like where? and when? >> we'll send you an invite. we are waiting for that speech from hillary clinton. if you've heard of the alternative right movement, that's what she's going to be talking about this african-american. and again, the definition of although right varies. we'll try define it. it's an ideology on the far right that brings white nationalism to the forefront. clinton gave a preview of her attack coming just this hour. this morning by way of that new ad that we were talking about. we'll show you more in a moment. but moments ago, donald trump offered a preemptive counterattack against that whole argument. >> it's the oldest play in the

democratic playbook. when democratic policies fail, they are left with only this one tired argument. you're racist, you're racist, they keep saying it. it's a tired, disgusting argument. and it's so totally predictable. they are failing so badly. >> brand new polling out this hour. hillary clinton now up 10 points nationally according to quinnipiac. and with 75 days until the election, 90% of people already picked a candidate say they won't be changing. they have made up their minds. wow. let's get right to kasie hunt, she's covering the clinton campaign in reno. . i know she's around. she's in the building. we expect her shortly. what are they telling you about

what she's going to deliver this hour? >> reporter: we are expecting hillary clinton to take the stage here in reno any moment. we have some new information about what she's going to say. we have a couple excerpts from this speech. to touch on first what you were just talking about, the definition of the alt-right saying it's short for alternative right and "the wall street journal" describes it as a loosely organized movement mostly online that rejects mainstream conservatism, promotes nationalism and views immigration and multiculturalism as threats to white identity. so this is something that the clinton campaign wants americans to learn more about. it's been farther on the fringe, even house speaker paul ryan didn't know the right word for it talking about it in an interview in his primary. hillary clinton is also going to cast donald trump's campaign in light of this. she's going to say from the

start donald trump has built his campaign on prejudice and paranoia. he's helping take over one of america's two major political parties. we also expect she might touch on the difference between john mccain's republican party in 2008 when he called out someone in a town hall for suggesting president obama wasn't a christian and today in the remarks we have heard from donald trump and they have encapsulated this in a new web ad out this it morning that gives you the visceral feel of what today is all about for the clinton campaign. take a look. >> a lot of klan members because of what he believes, we believe in. donald trump would be best for the job. >> for president? >> yeah. >> i'm a farmer and white nationalist. support donald trump. >> sending out all the allegiance, building a wall, a moratorium on immigration, that's appealing to a lot of

ordinary white people. >> running against donald trump at this point is really treason to your heritage. >> the trump campaign is protesting that this type of tactic for an ad is disgusting. hillary clinton spokesman tweeting back about that saying these words are simply part of the public record. >> kasie hunt with clinton out in reno. as soon as she takes the stage, we'll bring that to you live. donald trump just wrapped up a new hampshire rally. you may have been watching here. i'm joined by katy tur, who knows more than anyone about this campaign. we're expecting clinton any minute now. she's expected to talk about trump. the alternative right. we heard the rnc saying this should be off limits. this is not even appropriate. what's the trump campaign saying? >> reporter: the trump campaign is pushing back forcefully. you heard them call it disgusting. one of the fastest responses we have seen from the trump

campaign against an ad taken out against him. donald trump usually isn't is one to respond on twitter. but they came out with a statement. if you're reading into this and say this is a message they are worried about, this is a message they have been trying to combat, this idea that donald trump is a racist, that's why you're seeing him speech to african-americans, speech to latinos directly at these rallies. he had a hispanic roundtable. another roundtable with his ppac and black leaders today for gop outreach in those communities. the campaign is trying to change his image. they don't want him seen this way. they are realizing with a good portion of americans either tying him to that word -- >> i'm sorry to interrupt. hillary clinton is on stage. and we want to make sure we go to that. >> i think your mayor is doing a

terrific job. and the fact that she herself is a small businesswoman and committed to really lifting up reno and giving everybody in this great city the biggest little city with a big heart, a chance to get ahead and stay ahead. i could not be more honored than to have her support and endorse ment in this race. so thank you so much, mayor. let me also thank everybody here at truckee meadows community college. i love community colleges and i know something about what this college is doing to give people of all ages, not just young people, a real chance to get the skills and opportunities that everybody in america deserves. so thank you.

my original plan for this visit was to focus on our agenda, to help small businesses and entrepreneurs. this week we proposed new steps to cut red tape and taxes, to make it easier for small businesses to get the credit they need to grow and hire. i want to be a small business president. my father was a small businessman. i believe that in america, if you can dream it, you should be able to build it. and so we'll be talking a lot more about small business and about our economic plans in the days and weeks ahead. but today here in this community college devoted to opening minds and creating great understanding of the world in which we live, i

want to address something that i am hearing about from americans all over our country. everywhere i go, people tell me how concerned they are by the divisive rhetoric coming from my opponent in this election. and i understand that concern because it's like nothing we have heard before from a nominee for president of the united states from one of our two major parties. from the start, donald trump has built his campaign on prejudice and paranoia. he's taking hate groups mainstream and helping a radical fringe take over the republican party. his disregard for the values that make our country great is profoundly dangerous.

in just this past week under the guys of outreach americans, trump has stood up in front of largely white audiences and described black communities in such insulting and ignorant terms, poverty, rejection, horrible education, no housing, no homes, no ownership, crime at levels nobody has seen. right now he said you can walk down the street and get shot. those are his words. but when i hear them, i think to myself, how sad. donald trump misses so much. he doesn't see the success of black leaders in every field. the vibrancy of black-owned businesses, the strength of the black church. he doesn't see the excellence of historically black colleges and universities or the pride of

black participanents watching t thrive. he didn't see chief brown of dallas on television after the murders of five of his officers conducting himself with such dignity. . he certainly doesn't have any solutions to take on the reality of systemic racism and create more opportunity in communities of color and for every american. it takes a lot of nerve to ask people he's ignored and mistreated for decades, what do you have to lose? because the answer is everything. now trump's lack of knowledge or experience or solutions would be bad enough. but what he's doing here is more sinister.

trump is reenforcing harmful stereotypes and offering a dog whistle to his most hateful supporters. it's a disturbing e preview of what kind of president he'd be. and that's what i want to make clear today. a man with a long history of racial discrimination who traffics in dark conspiracy theories drawn from the pages of supermarket tabloids and the far dark reaches of the internet should never run our government or command our military. if he dpupt respect all americans, how can e he serve all americans?

i know that some people still want to give trump the benefit of the doubt. they hope that he will eventually reinvent himself. that there's a kinder, gentler, more responsible donald trump waiting in the wings somewhere. because after all, it is hard to believe anyone, let alone a nominee for president, could really believe all the things he says. but here's the hard truth. there is no other donald trump. this is it. and mya angelou, a great american whom i admired very much, she once said, when someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time. well, throughout his career and this campaign, donald trump has

shown us who he is and i think we should believe him. when he was getting his start in business, he was sued by the justice department for refusing to rent apartments to black and la ttino tenants. their applications would be marked with a "c", for colored and then rejected. three years later the justice department took trump back to court because he hadn't changed. and the pattern continued through the decades. state regulators fined one of trump's casinos for repeatedly removing black dealers from the floor. no wonder the turnover rate for his minority employees was way above average. and let's not forget that trump first gained political prominence leading the charge for the so-called birthers. he promoted the racist lie that president obama is not really an

american citizen, part of a sustained effort to delegitimize the first black president. in 2015 trump launched his own campaign for president with another racist lie. he described mexican immigrants as rapists and criminals and he accused the mexican government of actively sending them across the border. none of that is true. by the way, mexico is not paying for his wall either. if he ever tries to get it built, the american taxpayer will pay for it. we'll be stuck with the bill. but there has been a steady stream of big industry coming from him. we all remember when trump said a federal judge born in indiana

could not be trusted to do his job because, quote, he's a mexican. think about that. the man who today is the standard barer of the republican party said a federal judge had a distinguished record as a u.s. attorney had to go in hiding because mexican drug gangs were after him, who has mexican heritage but just like me was born in this country is somehow incapable, solely because of his heritage. even the republican speaker of the house of representatives paul ryan described that, and i quote, as the textbook definition of a racist comment. and to this day, trump has never apologized to the judge. but for trump, that's just par for the course. this is someone who retweets whiterema ssts online, like

the user who goes by the name whitegenocidetm. trump took this fringe bigot with a few dozen followers and spread his message to 11 million people. his campaign famously posted an anti-se mettic image over a sea of dollar bills that first appeared on white supremacist websites. the trump campaign has also selected a prominent white national iist leader as a delege in california. they only dropped him under pressure. when asked in a nationally televised interview whether he would disavow the support of david duke, a former grand wizard of the kkk, trump wouldn't do it and only later

again under mounting pressure did he backtrack. and when trump was asked about anti-semietic slurs and death threats coming from it his supporters, he refused to condemn them. through it all, he has continued pushing discredited conspiracy theories with racist undertones. you remember e he said that thousands of american muslims in new jersey cheered the 9/11 attacks. they didn't. he suggested that senator ted cruz's father was involved in the kennedy assassination. now perhaps in trump's mind, because mr. cruz was a cuban immigrant, he must have had something to do with it. there is absolutely, of course, no evidence of that. just recently trump claimed that president obama founded isis.

and he has repeated that over and over again. his latest paranoid fever dream is about my health. and all i can say is, donald, dream on. [ cheers ] [ chanting "hillary" ] but, my friends, this is what happens when you treat the national inquirer like gospel. they said in october i would be dead in six months. it's also what happens when you listen to the radio host alex jones, who claims that 9/11 and the oklahoma city bombings were

inside jobs. he even said, and this really is just so disgusting, he even said the victims of the sandy hook massacre were child actors and no one was actually killed there. i don't know what happens in somebody's mind or how dark their heart must be to say things like that, but trump doesn't challenge these lies. he actually went on jones' show and said, your reputation is amazing. i will not let you down. this from the man who wants to be president of the united states. you know, i have stood by president obama's side as e he made the toughest decisions a commander-in-chief has to make. in times of crisis, our country depends on steady leadership, clear thinking, calm judgment,

because one wrong move can mean the difference between life and death. i know we have veterans here, and i know we have families, mothers and spouses and children of people currently serve issing. the last thing we need in the situation room is a loose cannon who can't tell the difference or doesn't care to, between fact and fiction. and who buys so easily into racially tinged rumors. someone so detached from reality should never be in charge of making decisions that are as real as they come. and that is yet another reason why donald trump is simply temperamentally unfit to be president of the united states. now i read some people who are

saying, well, his bluster and his bigotry is just overheated campaign rhetoric. an outrageous person saying outrageous things for attention. but look at his policiepolicies. the ones that trump has proposed would put prejudice into practice. don't be distracted by his latest efforts to muddy the waters. he may have some new people putting new words in his mouth, but we know where he stands. he would form a deportation force to round up millions of immigrants and kick them out of the country. he abolished the bedrock principle that says if you're born in the united states, you're an american citizen. he says that children born to undocumented parents in america are anchor babies and should be deported. millions of them. he'd ban muslims around the world from entering our country just because of their religion. think about that for a minute.

how would that actually work? people landing in u.s. airports would line up to get their passports stamped just like they do now, but in trump's america when they step up to the counter, the immigration officer would ask every single person what is your religion? and then what? what if someone says i'm a christian, but the agent doesn't believe him. do they have to prove it? how would they do that? really? ever since landed on plymouth rock, america has distinguished itself as a haven for people fleeing religious persecution, believing in religious freedom and religious liberty. under donald trump, america

would distinguish itself as the only country in the world to impose a religious test at the border. now come to think of it, there are actually one other place that does that. the so-called islamic state, the territory that isis controls. what a cruel irony that someone running for president would equate us with them. but don't worry. some will say, as president, trump will be surrounded by smart ad vierzs who will reign in his worst impulses. so when a tweet gets under his skin and wants to e retaliate with a cruise missile, maybe cooler heads will convince him not to. well, maybe. but look at who he's put in charge of his campaign. trump likes to say he only hires the best people.

but he's had to fire so many campaign managers it's like an episode from "the apprentice." and the latest shakeup was designed to let trump be trump. so to do that he hired stooempb banen, the head of a right-wing website as the campaign's ceo. to give you a flavor of his work, here are a few headlines they have published. and i'm not make this up. birth control makes women unattractive and crazy. would you rather your child had feminism or cancer? gabrielle giffords, the gun control movement's human shield.

hoisted high and proud, the confederate flag proclaims a glorious heritage. and that one came shortly after the charleston massacre when democrats and republicans alike were doing everything they could to heal racial divides that banen tried to inflame. just imagine. donald trump reading that and thinking this is what i need more of in my campaign. now e he has nasty things to say about everyone. he railed against hum for rubbing his catholicism in his nose every second. the only presidential candidate ever to get into a public feud with the pope. it's truly hard to believe, but

according to the sovereign southern poverty law center, they have ideas of the september right. this is not conservatism as we have known it. this is not republicanism as we have known it. these are racist ideas, race baiting ideas, anti-muslim, anti-women, all key tenants making up the emerging racist ideology known as the alt-right. now alt-right is short for alternative right. t"the wall street journal" describes it as a loose but organized movement mostly online that rejects mainstream conservatism, promotes nationalism and views immigration and multiculturalism as threats to white identity. so the de facto merger between brooit bart and the trump campaign represents a landmark

achievement for this group. right wing nationalism around the world. just yesterday one of britain's most prominent right-wing leaders, a man named new york gel ferag who stoked anti-immigrant sentiments to win the referendum to have britain leave the european union campaign in mississippi. he's called for a bar on the children of legal immigrants from public schools and health services, has said women are, and i quote, worth less than men and supports scrapping laws that prevent employers from discriminating based on race. that's who donald trump wants by his side when he is addressing an audience of american voters.

and the grand godfather of this global brand of extreme nationalism is russian president vladimir putin. and in fact, he regularly appears on russian propaganda programs. now he's standing on the same stage as the republican nominee. trump himself keeps praise on putin and embraces pro-russian policies. he talks casually of abandoning our nato allies recognizing crimea, giving the kremlin a free hand in eastern europe. . american presidents from truman to reagan to bush and clinton, to obama have rejected the kind of approach trump is taking on russia. we should too. all of this adds up to something we have never seen before. of course, there's always been a

paranoid fringe in our politics. a lot of it arising from racial resentment, but it's never had the normal nominee giving it a national mega phone until now. on david dukes radio show the other day shs the mood was j jubilant. we appear to have taken over the republican party, one said. duke laughed. no, there's still more work to do, he replied. so no one should have any allusions about what's really going on here. the names may have changed. racists now call themselves racialists. white supremacists now call themselves white nationalists. the paranoid fringe now calls itself alt-right, but the hate burns just as bright. and now trump is trying to rebrand himself as well. but don't be fooled.

there's an old mexican proverb that says, tell me with whom you walk and i will tell you who you are. but we know who trump is. [ applause ] a few words on a teleprompter won't change that. he says he wants to make america great again, but more and more it seems as though his real message seems to be make america hate again. and this isn't just about one election. it's about who we are as a nation. it's about the kind of example we want to set for our children and our grandchildren. next time you see trump on tv, think about all the children listening across america. kids hear a lot more than we think. parents and teachers are already

worrying about what they call the trump effect. they report that bullying and harassment are on the rise in our schools, especially targeting students of color, muslims and immigrants. at a recent high school basketball game in indiana, white students held up trump signs and taunted latino players on the opposing team with chants of "build the wall" and "speak english." after a similar incident in iowa, one school principal said, they see it in a presidential campaign and now it's okay for everyone to say this. we wouldn't tolerate this kind of behavior before and e we tolerate in our homes and we should not stand for it from a presidential candidate. [ applause ] my friends, this is a moment of

reckoning for every republican dismayed that the party of lincoln has become the party of trump. it's a moment of reckoning for all of us who love our country and believe that america is better than this. 20 years ago when bob dole accepted the republican nomination, he pointed to the exits in the convention hall and told any racists in the party to get out. the week after 9/11, george w. bush went to a mosque and declared for everyone to hear that muslims love america just as much as i do. in 2008 john mccain told his own supporters that they were wrong about the man he was trying to defeat. senator mccain made sure they knew barack obama, he said, is an american citizen and a decent person. we need that kind of leadership

again. we can have our disagreements, and believe me, i understand that. i think that's healthy. we need good debates. but we need to do it in a respectful way. not finger pointing and blaming and stirring up this bigotry and prejudice. every day more americans are standing up and saying, enough is enough, including a lot of republicans and i am honored to have their support in this campaign. [ applause ] and i promise you this. with your help, i will be a president for democrats, republicans and independents, for those who vote for me and for those who vote against me.

i will be a president for all americans. [ applause ] because i truly believe we are stronger together, and this is a vision for the future rooted in our values and reflected in a rising generation of young people. the young people in america today are the most open, diverse and connected generation we have ever seen. how many of you saw any of the olympics? i was so proud. i always get carried away every time the olympics are on. you look at the diversity of our athletes. look at our fabulous olympic team representing the united states of america. an african-american muslim from

new jersey won the bronze e medal in fencing with grace and skill. would she even have a place in donald trump's america? and i'll tell you when i was growing up in so many parts of our country, simone manuel and katie ledecky would not have been allowed to swim in the same public pool. now together on our swimming team, they are winning olympic medals as teammates. i don't know about you, but i don't think we have a person to waste. we want to build an america where everyone has a place. where if you work hard and do your part, you can get ahead and stay ahead. that's the basic bargain of america. and we cannot get to where we need to be unless we move

forward together and stand up against prejudice and paranoia and prove, again, that america is great because america is good. thank you, all, so very much. let's go out and win the election. god bless you and god bless the united states of america. thank you! >> hillary clinton in reno, nevada, with a scathing review to donald trump. a very pointed speech that went i would say even further than people were expecting. joining me here in the studio our senior political ed tor beth foughy. she said trump is taking hate groups mainstream. e he doesn't see the success of african-american leaders. he's reenforcing stereotypes, a steady stream of bigotry. the language went on and on. very pointed. >> i mean, we were led to believe she was going to sort of

take on this alt-right movement that has been inspired, apparently, by some of donald trump's rhetoric and what we really heard here was a scathing indictment of trump himself. she basically cast him as a raysist. he would put prejudice into practice. his religious test for muslims is something isis would do. this is incredibly scathing. and she said at one point don't pay attention to the rebranding he's trying to do. we have seen that the past couple days speaking to african-americans. people of color, he's talked about how democrats would be no friend to minority audiences. she clearly has made the decision to come out there and stomp on that and just kill it in the bud. >> speaking of his reorganization, she talked specifically about steve ban non, the new campaign official from breitbart. she went through headlines and cited headlines to illustrate her point it's an outliar.

it's a fridge conservative website. >> it's unusual for a candidate to take on somebody else's staff. she took on stephen bannon, who is on donald trump's staff. he's brought some of this alt-right ideology into the magazine and made it more mainstream. hillary clinton made a point of going through headlines that are provocative and said bluntly you judge people by the company they keep. in this case, judge trump by who he is hiring. this is the man she pointed out. >> while we have been listening to hillary clinton, we have new reaction that just came in from jeb bush. one of trump's opponents, reacting to trump's new stance on immigration policies. he was talking to abc news. take a listen. >> i don't know what to believe about a guy who doesn't believe in things. this is all a game. he doesn't -- his views will

change based on the feedback he gets from a crowd or what he thinks he has to do. life is too complex. for me, i couldn't do that. i have to believe what i believe. if it's popular, great. if it's not, i try to get better at presenting my views. but shifting my views because it's political to do it, that's what politicians do in this country. that's what trump is trying to do. i find it abhorrent. >> abhorrent is the word he uses. all day people have been speculating that the candidates like jeb bush and like marco rubio might actually react to what trump is doing because he's coming around to a position that looks a whole lot more like what they were arguing for during the primaries. >> donald trump's signature issue throughout the primaries and up until this week has been to deport people who are here illegally. and have a force to come neighborhood by neighborhood and send them away. now he appears to be rethinking
