reports of a shooter which turned out to be people cheering for usain bolt at the olympics. the all-clear was given at l.a.x. a short time later after a police investigation concluded that loud noises caused the panic. in what appeared to be a separate incident, though, a man dressed as zoro complete with cape, mask and plastic sword, was detained by police at the airport around the same time. a witness says he was giving out hugs. and a small mississippi community will gather today to pay their final respects to the two nuns found murdered in their home last week as authorities continue to question the man who confessed to the crime. a wake was held for sisters margaret held and paula merrill that was last night they were discovered stabbed to death on thursday after they did not show up for work. and yet family members are already trying to show compassion for the men accused of their murder. >> this is not a hate crime. i'm positive it's fuelled by something other than that. or maybe all of the other terrible things that he has

storm. last night there was a really bad scene around cincinnati. we were under a flash flood warning. this is saint bernard, ohio, i mean that's a lot of water. that's rushing fast, too. yeah. and there goes something floating down. we could -- you know i'm not going to see anything like that during the day. isolated thunderstorm could do some downpours outside of the tropics. we have two tropical systems. a tropical depression 8, tropical depression 9, if they get named they'll become tropical storms. one is right here. you saw the flare-up that has died off heading for eastern north carolina. good news for them. and the one we were watching all last week has made it through the florida straits and is just north of cuba. a lot of thunderstorms over cuba, but so far not showing any signs of developments. just got the brand-new forecast in from the hurricane centers. first the one that's going to impact eastern north carolina. they only bring it up to about 45-mile-per-hour winds as it passes by the outer banks near cape hatteras. so that's not much of an issue

for the outer banks. that's barely even it's going to be a breezy day, rip currents will be a threat for people at the beach. larger than normal waves good for the surfers. that's really the only impact. now we focus our attention to the water in the gulf. this is where the water is very warm this time of year. you don't like to have any storm down there in the gulf, let alone a system that's going to sit for two to three days. that's going to be the case. the hurricane center thinks that the winds are going to only strengthen to 50 to 60 miles per hour by the time it makes it to the big bend of florida. that would be a medium impact tropical storm. then crossing over florida, and then heading out here into areas of the open atlantic as it strengthens possibly to a hurricane. louis we still have to watch that. we have a storm that's going to be in the gulf of mexico for three days over some of the warmest water on the planet. that's the fuel for these storms. we'll watch that closely over the next three days. >> bill it seems like hurricane season has arrived. >> it is. and there's another tropical wave coming off of the coast of africa a lot of our computers are taking to the caribbean or possibly you know towards --

panic. in what appeared to be a separate incident, though, a man dressed as zorro complete with cape, mask and plastic sword, was detained by police at the airport around the same time. a witness says he was giving out hugs. >> quite a sight there. two united airlines pilots are due in court today in scotland after being arrested preflight for allegedly being drunk. the pilots, who are 35 and 45 years old were arrested on saturday prior to a flight from scotland to new jersey carrying 141 passengers. that flight was delayed almost ten hours while a replacement crew was found. united airlines says both pilots have been removed from service pending an investigation. now this is the second time in a little over a month that pilots have been arrested for being impaired. two canadian pilots were arrested in july, also at glasgow airport for drinking prior to a flight. and still ahead, betty, 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick finds his protest of the national anthem saying he will continue to sit down until

affecting the u.s. a tropical storm watch that is up for the outer banksle of north carolina. looks like a minimal impact storm for them so that's great news for everyone from wilmington through new bern and atlantic beach to cape hatteras area. it's going to come close tohe outer banks, and then hook out. most likely tuesday morning is when it will be closest. maybe some rain squalls with it. winds are only going to be 40 to 45 miles per hour. no damage will be done with that. we'll get some high waves so people that are venture into the water rip currents could be a threat to life but that's about it. then our attention goes to the one down in the gulf and of course, this is where we have famous storms. this is where some of the biggest storms we've ever seen have formed and gotten extremely strong. this looks like it's going to wrap up back up towards florida. this area is very susceptible because of the geography. any storms that approach like this, even a weak storm, coastal flooding is going to be a possibility from fort myers to tampa sarasota northward depending on how strong it gets. the stronger it gets the worse the flooding would be. right now the hurricane center

thinks about a 60-mile-per-hour tropical storm. a little bit of a punch with it. this is a pretty unpopulated area, cedar keys located here. we'll have to see how strong it gets. it has about three days over the gulf and then it's going to head out to the atlantic. could brush south carolina and north carolina again you are in that cone of uncertainty and they do bring it almost up to hurricane strength in about five days. rain fall definitely is going to be an issue. we will see as much as eight inches of rain right along the immediate coastline. about one to four inches will be up here along the gulf coast side. but the florida side, that's where the highest rainfall totals would be. forecast for today all your travels look pretty nice today. i know we had horrible flooding in the cincinnati area last night. those thunderstorm have since dried up and they're all gone. look at the pictures from this. this was a flash flood emergency that was issued right around sunset last night in ohio. greater cincinnati area. ben if we're going to get downpours today watch out dallas-ft. worth san antonio houston new orleans and tampa especially along the gulf. this is about as warm as it gets louis. things are looking much cooler next weekend for much areas of

yesterday for six people who spent the last year living life as if they were on mars. the six crew members are part of nasa's fourth such mission and the longest ever to understand how a year-long deep space mission would affect astronauts. nbc's jolen kent has the story. >> reporter: after a year of total isolation, today they're returning to civilization. >> i'm super excited because it's the first time we get to be outside. >> enjoy mars. >> reporter: six scientists who call themselves martians, walked into this 36 foot wide solar powered dome last august. >> i'm looking forward to getting to act like an astronaut for a year. >> reporter: on the rugged slope of a volcano it's the longest ever nasa mission to understand how a year-long deep space trip would affect astronauts. inside to replicate what life might be like on the red planet, no running water. cooking with freeze-dried food. and their only window to the outside world.

welcome back. recovery efforts in italy continue following last week's devastating earthquake. now officials are looking at whether the death toll may have climbed higher as a result of building contractors cutting corners. nbc news correspondent lucy kafanov joins us now. good morning, lucy. what do you see there at this hour? >> good morning, betty. well emergency response crews are still digging in amatrice

the hardest hit area but hope of finding survivors is all but gone at this stage. the focus finding and recovering the bodies and clearing the rubble. one area in which they have stopped searching, however, is pescara del tronto. a tiny mountaintop village that was almost completely pulverized in the quake. it is now off limits because of the danger there but our cameras got rare access inside there. rebuilding is going to be virtually impossible. there's almost nothing left there. authorities are investigating whether fraud and shoddy construction practices might have contributed to the high death toll including looking at a school that was supposed to be earthquake proof that had completely collapsed. also another concern, whether the mafia is going to get its hands on the lucrative building contracts. that is a point raised by italy's top prosecutor this morning. organized crime obviously still a big issue here. but look rebuilding is not going to be easy for one it's a matter of money the vast majority of italians do not take out homeowners insurance let alone earthquake insurance. and while the government is scrambling to find housing for more the more than 2700 people
