from our msnbc headquarters in new york. donald trump is preparing to clear the air of his signature issue, immigration. in a tweet last night, he wrote, "i will be making a major speech on illegal immigration on wednesday in the great state of arizona. adding bringing crowds looking for a larger venue." the announcement topped off a week-long series of flip flops on his immigration stance, which began last november, with a vow to deport the nation's 11 million undocumented immigrants. >> we're going to have a deportation force and we're going to do it humanely. >> there can be a softening. >> we're looking to deport many, many people. we're ing wall on the border and we're going to institute nationwide e-verify, stop illegal immigrants from accessing welfare and entitlements and develop an exitin tree. and you know what that is. exit entry system to ensure

those who overstay their visas that they're quickly removed. >> now trump's running mate, mike pence and kellyanne conway both seem to struggle in defending trump. >> nothing has changed about donald trump's position. deal with illegal immigration. there will be no path to legalization, no path to citizenship, unless people leave the country. >> still no amnesty. secondly, he is building that wall. he is not talking about a deportation force, but he is talking about being fair and humane. >> we know now that next set, donald trump will make his first appearance before a predominantly african-american audience when he visits a church in the heart of detroit. trump's campaign manager confronted about it being the first time during his candancy. >> trump has been running for president, though, kelly ann,

since june of 2015, 20 months. how many times has he gone into an american inner city and held an event for a largely black audience? >> i don't know the answer, but i can tell you -- >> let me just say. would you be surprised that the answer is none? never? >> no, i will not be surprised and i tell you chris and pledge to you and everyone watching those events are actually being planned. >> nbc's hallie jackson covering the trump campaign and joins us live now from trump to you per here in new york. hallie, let's talk about at least wha you're hearing regarding this big immigration speech in a few days from now. >> reporter: well, there had been conflicting messages on this, to him tamron, but donald trump himself promising there will be some clarity in this speech over the next couple of weeks. so you've got trump who has had this muddled message, as you pointed out, on specifically what he would do about the so-called deportation force, something he has been talking about since november, what to do

with these estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants living in this country. but additionally, you've got some questions now about even his wall, for example. you have some of his surrogates now saying that donald trump when he talks about the wall is also talking about not just a physical wall, but a technological or a virtual wall, raising some questions about what exactly that means. trump has avoided largely these specifics at his rallies these past couple weeks. questions have come up, leaving it to his team and advisers to try to clarify out there in public. but what you have seen, tamron is a series of mixed messages, even though those surrogates insist that trump's policy has been consistent. what it's been, frankly, is a question mark. >> and going on to the idea of amnesty or some type of legal status, donald trump did say last week that he would look at providing a legal status. he did not call it amnesty. he referred to paying of taxes. and a legal status. we know the most hardened on

this issue called that amnesty. despite the language donald trump chose to use last week. are we expecting him to erase that from his speech on wednesday? >> reporter: i think that what you can expect to see from donald trump on wednesday is whatever trump wants to talk about. one would imagine that specify what he's talking about in regard to the payment of back taxes for these undocumented immigrants, for example, which is something that raised a lot of eyebrows, will come up. of course, he wouldn't call it amnesty, something he has railed against in the primaries for months and months. but what is clear is that donald trump has some questions to answer. >> absolutely. thank you very much, hallie. and donald trump's new campaign ceo, steve bannon, he continues to face questions of his own regarding allegations from a divorce battle. a 2007 sworn statement, bannan's wife alleged that he made anti semitic comments, though bannan spokesperson denied he made those remarks. it comes after a separate 1996 police report includes her

allegation that he grabbed her wrist and neck. steve bannon pled not guilty and was never found guilty. the charges were dismissed six months later. a spokesperson tells nbc news the charges were dropped and he has a quote, great relationship with his ex-wife. ari, let's go to the allegations made from the wife in the divorce papers, specifically the ones that everyone was talking about over the weekend. regarding where to educate their children, she said. >> yeah, this getting a lot of attention over the weekend, precisely because steve bannon is now a much bigger figure in the trump campaign. but this history doesn't give us any final resolution on the facts. we will show you the allegations people can make up, their own, nbc news reporting on the litigation. steve bannon's ex-wife saying he asked the director from a potential school why there were so many hanukkah books in the library. the biggest problem, the number of jews that attend, saying he

doesn't like jews, he doesn't like the way they raise their kids to be whiney brats and he didn't want his kids going to school with, quote, jews. that is one side of the story and the other side, the rebuttal from steve bannon's personal spokesperson saying at the time he never said anything like that, proudly sent the girls to archer, that school for middle school, and high school educations, as well. the other big piece here that has gotten a lot of attention was a police report which does exist and does contain her allegation, but as you noted, tamron, no conviction or anything like that. we'll read again from the report so people can see. her allegation was that he grabbed at her neck, pulled her into a car and she said she started to fight back, striking at his face so he would let go of her. that from a '96 report, ultimately, again, i can emphasize both factually and in fairness to the steve bannon side of the story, his folks

emphasizing there was no conviction that charges were dropped. and so we don't have a factual resolution on this. what we do have is these allegations from the proceeding. obviously, not something politically the trump campaign wants to focus on right now. >> ari, thank you very much. joining me now is trump campaign senior adviser, boris epstein. good to see you. >> good to see you. >> let's pick up on steve ban n bannon. kellyanne conway and reince prieb priebus, is he a liability at this point, could you be looking at another campaign ceo? >> absolutely not. this is a divorce, and llege-aged children. this is not what we should be talking about. we should be talking about the candidates, donald trump and hillary clinton and not steve bannon's marital history. >> i think it goes beyond his marital history if there were anti semitic remarks. hillary clinton tying breitbart tom to the alt-right and allegation that donald trump has courted that group. that has a tie to steve bannon

so it goes beyond to a contention marital back and forth to is there something there. >> well, i'm jewish, and everyone in my family is jewish. and steve bannon has been nothing but wonderful to me since he started working with us. no issue whatsoever. of again, this -- the left and the clinton smear machine trying to distract from the real issues. the fact that she has lied about turning over e-mails to congress, perjured herself in front of congress. the issues with the clinton foundation. gilbert chagoury, prevented from coming into the country because of ties to hezbollah. this is a clinton smear machine trying to distract from the terrible time hillary clinton is having and hiding from the campaign trail this whole week. >> you know she wasn't charged with perjury. >> not yet. >> you said she perjured herself. >> she lied and perjured herself. you don't have to be charged with it and she should be charged. >> here we go with donald trump

and this immigration plan. let me play a little bit of what was said regarding the birth right citizenship. mike pence having a different answer regarding the candidate. let's play it. >> okay. >> of so you're comfortable with birth right citizenship. >>'m comfortable with it. i'm comfortable with the supreme court rulings on the issue. >> is it still the position of the trump/pence campaign that children born in this country to undocumented immigrants are not u.s. citizens? >> well, i think the whole question of anchor babies, as it's known, the whole question of citizenship, of natural-born americans is a subject for the future. i think the american people ought to ask. >> but on the official campaign platform, it clearly says, in birth right citizenship. do you understand why even some of donald trump's supporters say this is all very cloudy now after his campaign, 14-plus months on this. why the confusion? >> the key here is this. the key is to go back to the

main points of immigration policy, which is one, building a wall. next co will play for the wall. >> is it going to be a real wall, do you know the answer to that? >> a real wall and we'll use everything. >> why did kerry say it wouldn't be a real wall and hallie jackson reporting -- so with 100% certainty you're telling me. >> we are building a wall and even hillary clinton supported a barrier. >> we're talking about donald trump. >> what i'm saying is hillary clinton has flip-flopped on that issue. donald trump has been steadfast. we'll build a wall and mexico will pay for the wall. illegal immigrants will be deported. >> how are criminals defined? because donald trump could not answer that last week and you will be the first i've heard being able to define what you mean by criminals. because if you're here illegally -- >> that's a crime in itself, right. what we mean by criminals, and this will be laid out on wednesday. but folks who are murderers, rapist, who commit feloniefelon high-class misdemeanors. >> is that different from the

current policy in place from the obama administration? >> terrible crimes like the murder of katy steinle, a repeat offender, the person in san francisco. also to san francisco, we'll make sure sank area cities are ended. e-verify is put into place. and once all of that is in place, and then we are also preventing new illegal immigrants from coming into the country, we will deal with the rest of immigrants here. future laws will be passed along with congress. >> how do you define dealing with the 11 million people here humanly? is there going to be a task force rounding these people up? >> you know, it's funny, we're going into 14 days now talking about this. >> it's not funny. >> we're not talking about a lot of issues. >> this is a big one for your candidate. >> you're not talking about hillary clinton's immigration policy at all. 12 minutes in, we haven't touched it. talking about amnesty. she wants to increase syrian

refugee influx by 550%. what donald trump will do is keep americans safe, american jobs here. >> boris, you seem to know hillary clinton's plan better than you know -- donald trump's and let me ask you again, the 1 1 million people undocumented in this country, what is the plan for them? >> once we go through the steps i laid out as far as the wall, criminals, e-verify and sanctuary cities, how to best deal with the remaining illegal imgrants and that will be dealt with partly on wednesday's speech. and everyone is saying, when is the speech coming? the speech is coming on wednesday. the details forth coming and that's what will lay them out. >> why so slow -- donald trump has been running now for 14 months, clinched the nomination in may. we had the conventions. many of his surrogates, many people like yourself, say if it were not for donald trump, we would not be talking about immigration. so with that said, you've crowned him, the person who brought this to the table, why then if the king of

immigration -- >> he's not the king of immigration. >> he has been, if nothing else very unclear in the last week. would you admit to that? >> listen, if you want to call that unclear, i think i just laid out very clear steps. >> okay, last week. >> did you see the interview on sean hannity's show? >> of course. >> do you believe those were the same answers he gave to anderson cooper? >> always consistent on how to deal with illegal immigrants on criminals, sanctuary cities and e-verify. >> you can cling to any word you want. the voters will have a binary choice in november. between donald trump who wants to end illegal immigration ininfluential flux and deport illegal immigrants and hillary clinton wants to swing the borders wide open, increase syrian refugee, and make this country less safe. make this country's workers less safe in their jobs. that's the binary choice. we shouldn't comparing donald

trump, a single word here or there. >> donald trump said on friday -- is that not reasonable? >> the thing that's -- the voters, tamron, to compare the two candidates to each other. that's the choice. >> regarding donald trump's health record, we could play a little bit of what donald trump's doctor said in an nbc exclusive interview. we'll play a little bit of that. >> is that the way that you write most of your medical letters? >> no. but for mr. trump i wrote that letter. sitting right at this desk to write that letter while the driver waited. his health is celebrity. >> so that's trump's personal doctor saying a driver waited out front and he wrote this letter in five minutes. today donald trump calling on hillary clinton to release detailed medical records. why? >> because the voters should know. the voters should know who their president is going to be and what their health is. these are both folks in their late 60s saying my health is fine. >> will he attach his taxes to

that? health records have nothing to do with taxes. >> it's transparency. >> financial disclosures. >> you said the american public should know regarding health -- >> how healthy the president is going to be. >> and is also if their president has business dealings outside of this country. >> he has released 104 pages of financial disclosures which fully go into that. hillary clinton has lied about her e-mails. i would love to see those 30,000 e-mails. that would be great for america to see, as well. >> we have seen tens of thousands but we have not seen for the first time in modern history a president's tax records. >> in her e-mails, a lot of pay to play. entertaining. thank you, boris. nbc's kristen welker covering the clinton campaign and has the latest of what's gone on, including, again, donald trump challenging her to release her medical records, despite that interview with his doctor clearly stating how that went down. >> right. hey, tamron. the clinton campaign essentially saying she has released a

medical report, a physical reiterating recently she is in good health and the clinton campaign's posture is that they're not going to release any more information that donald trump is the one who should be releasing more detailed information about his health. you brought up that issue of taxes, tamron. and i can bet you that when those debates start, that will likely be something that we might hear from secretary clinton. every time he presses her on releasing more information about her health, the clinton campaign is going to fire back about that point. that he has yet to release his tax returns. secretary clinton will spend the first part of this week fund-raising, and then back on the campaign trail and i am told by one of her top officials that expect her surrogates to be hitting some of those battleground states. they are going to be echoing some of the themes she brought up last week in the speech in which she tried to link donald trump to the alt-right, that fringe movement, tamron. >> kristen, thank you very much. coming up, it's been months since trump clinched the nomination, may.

communications director for jeb bush's presidential campaign. thank you all for joining us. glen, let me start off with you. i was just talking with boris epstein from the trump campaign. he insists donald trump has been consistent despite video, despite the candidate's own words. why not simply say, it will all be cleared up on wednesday, with this major speech, rather than tell us do you believe me or your lying eyes and ears. >> because they haven't figured it out. what we have gotten to right here is the fundamental problem with the trump campaign, and my buddy tim miller is enjoying this immensely, i have no doubt. but -- >> indeed. >> we have a situation here where his position in the primary, which was enormously popular and really got his troops going, the fundamental reason why his candidacy succeeded is unpalatable to americans. upwards of two-thirds of

americans who are in favor of some form of comprehensive immigration reform. this is the classic issue in which trump is on that fault line of his own candidacy where his strength in the primary and his willingness to keep using this very, very harsh rhetoric is screwing him with the larger electric accurate. >> let me play what reince priebus said after a plan that sounded awfully similar to jeb bush and the donald trump administration. >> >> do you agree with analysis that says this is jeb bush's policy? >> no, i don't. i think you're not going to see an easy path to legalization. you're not going to see that in a donald trump plan. >> you thought jeb bush's plan provided an easy path? >> an easier plan to legalization. i think the gang of eight was an easier plan to legalization. an easier plan to citizenship. you're not going to have a pathway to citizenship with donald trump. that's off the table. >> but tim, donald trump said he

would have legal status available to these -- some of these people, anyway. and when they say that jeb bush's plan was an easy plan, they have nothing to contrast, because we don't know donald trump's plan. >> yeah, there are no details. you know, i think reince is stuck in a tough situation there, to say the least. what this has done, tamron, is exposed the bill lie behind donald trump's campaign, claiming he was the straight shooter, saying the hard truths. but what we were saying in the jeb campaign, that's not true. he was telling people what they wanted to hear. you know, he wasn't the one that was uttering hard truths, he was trying to mirror the views of the republican primary electorate. but the problem is, the candidates that wanted to actually win the general election knew this a year ago, which is that a deportation force is a nonstarter. if you want to win a general election. and donald trump's policies in the primary repulse hispanics,

repulse married college-educated women and it's too late. so they're trying to change to fix it -- if it's too late to do that, and unfortunately what they're not focusing on are all of the flaws we could be arguing about right now, obamacare failing, and stuck with an immigration plan too late to fix. >> kellyanne conway was on, and donald trump will have his immigration plan in his mind when he's challenged on it, we'll see. but this is how they described his debate preparations. let me play and get your comment. >> look, he's an unconventional candidate and he's not going to prepare the way hillary does, which is lock your heart in a room and cram her head with these binders. donald trump, the authentic donald trump who has been taking his case directly to the voters is the one you will see on the debate stage with hillary clinton. and i think they're nervous over in clinton camp, because he is the unpredictable "x" factor,

she is the hillary clinton that basically needs to memorize lines. >> annie, it sounds as if, you know, we have all been there with the final exam, some people who study and get in there and others who say let me just wing it, and if i circle c enough times i might get a decent score. are they prepared here? >> look, i mean, i think that donald trump has never done a one-on-one debate like this before. but he did a masterful job in the primaries. and he is up against a woman who, as you point out, is excellent at passing her final exams. so i was just in georgia recently talking about immigration and i think one of the common threads from almost everybody i talked to is just real interested in what these debates are going to look like. so u know, i think a free wheeling style is something that has really served donald trump well, and will actually be a pretty fun and interesting and

instructive contrast to hillary clinton's dial, which is that extremely scripted presentation. and you'll just get to pick which one, you know, works better. but there will be two people at the top of their game, no doubt. and i think whether, y know, she's studying books or not, it's going to be what irrelevant. >> i have to break out, because we have breaking political news i think all three would be interested in. we just got this in. hillary clinton's top aide, huma abedin, just announced she is separating from her husband, anthony weiner, nbc's kristen welker joins me, and this follows a report in the "new york post," the tabloid here, that anthony weiner allegedly was on social media with more inappropriate messages uncovered? >> right. it comes amid this new allegation that former congressman anthony weiner was sexting again. let me read this statement from

huma abedin. it says, quote, after long and painful consideration and work on my marriage, i have made the decision to separate from my husband. anthony and i remain key voted to to do the best for our son, the light of our life. during this difficult time, i ask for respect for our privacy. a little bit of background. back in 2011, congressman then weiner resigned from congress amid a sexting scandal. then he had this political come back, new york mayor, ahead in the polls for a period of time, and then a second six tinge scandal emerged. he wound up, of course, losing that race, and he sort of has been behind the scenes ever since then. there was a documentary that recently came out about his run for mayor. but for the most part, he's largely stayed out of the public eye. it has been huma abedin who has been on the campaign trail with hillary clinton. i have been covering the clinton campaign, tamron, since the start. i see her every day out on the

so many wonderful titles. another audience, starting off this week with the campaign saying donald trump will speak in detroit at a church in that city. >> okay. >> it took a week, i guess, to correct the curve. so he had the message of reaching out, but didn't know who the messenger should be. is that how to process that? >> he's not trying to woo over black voters. what's going on, he's trying to hold on to some white moderates by acting like he's concerned about black folks. is he same time, his strategy and why he's pulled an ann coulter and his strategy is to really get the kind of extremist unlikely white voters, the type of people who put guiliani in office here in new york. you might recall his strategy to get -- to push david denikins out of office was to is he same time put on to the ballot

nonbinding secession referendum for staten island we got people out to vote who would only vote for cessation. in georgia, they got rid of a democratic governor by really pushing the idea of defending the confederate flag. those types of voters he has to keep in the tent. so he has to keep his extremist message, but he wants to hold on to the moderates too, so he acts like he's concerned about black folks but he's really when you listen to it, talk to white voters, trying to keep his tent together. >> well, to your point about the tent, we all know that's why he struggled last week. you know, beginning with week with sean hannity, polling the audience, doesn't know which way to go on immigration reform. at the end of the week, he's in iowa back to the beginning, which is, you know, my big wall, and this is what we're going to do, but still no answer regarding what he will do with the 11 million undocumented. let's talk about how donald trump of handled the death of

dwyane wade's cousin. sent out a tweet, one saying dwyane wade's cousin just shot and killed while walking her baby in chicago, just what i have been saying, african-americans will vote trump. he follows up, my condolences to dwyane wade and his family on the loss of nykea aldridge, the followup tweet there. the numbers appear that they are not going to move here. and there could have been an opening if not for donald trump, another republican candidate, especially if you're talking about jobs and resurrecting some of the jobs in the inner city that people want back and believe if the proper plan is put in, they can get back. >> now, look, we cannot lose sight of the fact that in the primary, the two big surprises were the two candidates who are most clear against these bad trade deals. and the need to bring jobs. that's why bernie shot up so fast and that's why trump trounced 16 other candidates.

but the reality is, trump's main issue is -- two things. one, he can't discipline himself when we have seen him struggle to stay on messages as a candidate. the other is that i think he actually really understands that his whole campaign, his whole media thing is about turning out as many unlikely white voters as he can and that the history of doing that, unfortunately in our country s is both celebrity conservative candidates, jesse "the body" ventura and extremist causes, like defending the confederate flag and his campaign tries to be both at the same time. >> quickly, detroit, when he goes into this church, what does he say? >> honestly, i think we should expect him to go in and stay on message to his white base. you know, it's -- go back to the dwyane wade thing, right? think about it. the first thing he does is say, you know, they'll vote for me. then condolences are an after thought. all of this happening, you know, before the families even had

welcome back. nate parker, the director and star of the upcoming film "the birth of a nation" speaking out. as his film sold for record $17.5 million this year at the sundance film festival but the run-up to the release is plagued by controversy. two weeks ago, a 1999 rape accusation against him resurfaced. in 2001 he was found not guilty of the charge but called the episode a, quote, painful moment in my life. in an interview of "variety." later they revealed that the woman involved in the incident had taken her own life in 2012. parker reacted in a facebook post writing, quote, i myself just learned that the young woman ended her own life several years ago and i am filled with

profound sorrow. he continued, while i maintain my innocence that the encounter was consensual, there are things more important than the law. there is morality, no one who calls himself a man of faith should even be in that situation. that response led to calls for movie goers to boycott the film and the american film institute canceled a screening of the film. now in an exclusive interview of "ebony" he says what he's learned. britney danielle for "ebony," thank you for your time. >> thank you for having me. >> to be here clear, nate parker found not guilty. people know that and they've read the background here. but he's been very much criticized in the reaction to the story and people see as a lack of empathy for this lady or other people in this situation. how did you read him?

>> it was -- it was interesting going into the interview because it all came together sort of at the last moment, s i had certain set of questions i wanted to talk about. i knew he would probably be on guard, right? because of all the controversy, because of all the criticism. he was open to talk and i believe he knew that he needed to give some more in-depth answers than he had given in the past. >> part of his answer or part of his explanation of what happened deals with toxic masculinity. what did he mean by that in the campus culture he said existed when he was at penn? >> when he was at penn state, actually -- >> penn state, yeah. >> right. what he was talking about was a lot of when he was growing up, he wanted to get girls, right? that was his whole thing was around getting girls' numbers,

getting girls to say yes, he said. getting girl dos go back home with him. so i think when he mentions toxic masculinity, it is a culture where your manhood is based on how you perform with the ladies or being a player or being a dog. he was saying that his buy into that culture really affected him as a young man and kind of led to this situation. >> does he at all look back at the last few weeks and how he chose to answer some of the questions of part of why this backlash has continued? >> definitely. he definitely acknowledged that he came off as arrogant. he came off as very self centered and very self serving during the "variety" and the "deadline" interviews and he really wanted to -- i guess to show that he's been talking to people, that he's been reading the criticism about him online, which i mean, i wouldn't do

that. but he's been, you know, kind of taking it in, if we agree with what he's saying and trying to process it so he can have a different perspective going forward. >> do you believe what he said in your interview and what he continues to say is enough to keep some of the backlash or the call for a boycott in number of very prominent african-american female writers among those that called for a boycott of this film. >> i don't know. i don't know if it will ever be enough. he doesn't know that either. he mentions that in our interview when he says, you know, he wants to learn more, he wants to be an ally and some people may not accept him. i think that's just something he will have to deal with going forward. i mean, people, you know, still bring up issues about woody allen and r.kelly and bill cosby and you will never be accepted by everybody but i think if he is serious about changing and
