the trump manager joining him for an interview and up next. hey steve. that's my dream too. i want to do it some day. >> me too. maybe we can rent it. good afternoon. i am live in new york and the election now is exactly ten weeks from today. we're 70 days away from the election day and topping the agenda and the count down is on to what donald trump's campaign says is going to be a major spaech on the signature issue. >> i am looking forward to joining donald trump in arizona on wednesday. he is going to lay out his specification on immigration in the country. >> a lot of questions on if trump is going to change his tune. the big speech is set for tomorrow. we're going to talk to his campaign manager today. kelly anne conway is going to join us live. stay tuned for that. also on the agenda voters at
1:01 pm
the poll this hour. some big names and john mccain and debbie shult about to learn their fate. >> we are confident and look forward to moving for the election in november. >> cane is one of the battled candidates across the country and trying to see how to handle the trump factor this fall. that's a dilemma that's going to make or break the votes all over the ballot. that's ahead and why is she not run ago way with it? the news has been tough for donald trump the past few weeks but he is still close to hillary clinton in some new polls. we're going to look at exactly what is keeping trump in the race. it's the most important and coming up. also breaking news in the last few minutes we're get regular ports that isis second in command is now dead. this according to isis o
1:02 pm
officials. they have not yet commented ton reports. richard angle is live in istanbul and richard, we have isis making a statement and what do you know of what's going on? >> reporter: so i have spoke ton a u.s. intelligence official and said that there was an air strike carried out by the united states against the town and the small city of albab and that's not really near aleppo but near the tushish border and he was the intended target. carried out in the daylight hours and eastern standard time about ten or twelve hours ago. what is unclear is if he was killed in that strike. a vehicle was hit. have not been able to determine
1:03 pm
how many people november in that vehicle, but there's a note of caution. you have to look at the soirsurg of this. a situation making the announ announcement hours after this attack on a vehicle and coming out and saying that one of the key leader was killed. so was he really killed? he is wanted by the u.s. there's a $5 million bounty on his head and this intelligence official that i spoke to did have some skepticism and saying that he is trying to fake his own death. there was an at that tack trying to kill him and maybe it worked and maybe it did not. yes, there was an attack looking for him, but no confirmation that it killed him. >> live in turkey and thank you for that. now, to the top political story and donald trump getting ready for what is a much anticipated
1:04 pm
speech and he is set to deliver tomorrow on the set of immigration. this comes after the week of high profile confusion on this issue and trump signaling over a week ago that he maybe softening his stance on immigration. trump tweeting and saying that from day one i said that i was going to build a wall and stop illegal immigration, watch wednesday. again donald trump tweeting that out today. we're awaiting that speech tomorrow and what clarity donald trump can bring and before me from trump towers kelly anne conway. thanks for taking a few minutes. >> hey steve. thanks for having me. >> let's dive into this and that word softening that donald trump put out there a few weeks ago. you have been getting a lot of questions on what that means. let's start with with the bottom line. donald trump has said in the campaign over and over again that the 11 million that are
1:05 pm
here in the country illegally right now have to go. they must go. those are the words. is there any circumstance that at the end any of those 11 million could still remain in the united states? >> so you have to listen to the speech tomorrow no find out. it's an excellent speech and these are his words and policies. he is the most involved in the drafting. i will tell you that he deserves credit for elevating the issue. i have to say that republicans and democrats have ignored it for many years. here he is and that tells you something about the public opinion on the issue that steve many americans agree with him and they want something done. let's make clear what he will not give them. no amnesty, legalization and no more sans ware cities and these angle mom and dads that have lost their mom and dads to
1:06 pm
illegal immigrants will not have to suffer. people like that will not suffer anymore. there's going to be the wall. the wall has been a signature piece of the legislation and one of the signature of the candidacy from day one. that's not changed. i think there are very few issues that you can see a contrast, and i will say one last thing that we at least every week are giving speeches on policy. this is what they tell and voters expect and to hear a debate on the issues. hillary clinton is giving a speech on donald trump and websites. he is giving on immigration and policies. >> okay. let's stay to policies and fair enough. i have to say that if there's any departure here from donald trump in terms of the 11 million all having to go and if there's going to end up being any wiggle room on that and in terms of the 11 million staying, wouldn't
1:07 pm
that be a major disappointment to the supporters that rallied around him saying that every single one has to go. >> i hope you ask her the same thing -- >> okay. let's just stay on immigration here. >> steve, ask her about immigration. why is she so critical of president obama on the issue. she has critical of the deportation of over 2 million people that folks do not focus on. she wants open borders and that the city could stay andash and release the law enforcement hands are tied. i am talking about it because she will not. she has disrespect for you and the colleagues and media that she will not have a press conference. this woman won't speak to the press. give us the credit that in 24 or
1:08 pm
30 hours from now, you will hear one candidates sight on immigration. >> when i take a step back i don't see a clear definition and some say that it's only amnesty if the proposal allows citizenship for eventually for some undocumented people in the country and some say anything that anybody says that they're allowed to stay for any reason and short of citizenship would be am messtnesty. what is your definition of amnesty? >> well, people want to make the point that all of a sudden donald trump adopted jeb bush on illegal immigration. that's false. they never wanted to build a wall:it did call for amnesty and senator rubeio i hope that he wins the primary today was part of the gang of eight with chuck sherman and others and president
1:09 pm
obama frankly. that's nowhere near where don will be. i think that what happened in the primaries is instructive. that falls and then the voting for don and the ideas and so the idea that, you know, the point that mr. trump has made again and again is that you don't get amnesty and legalization since you broke the law to be here in the first place. he respects the issue and nobody has bothered to enforce the law. imagine what happens if people actually enforce a law. if we had a president that worked with congress but worked with congress and worked with the law enforcement agencies and the immigration o officials. we as taxpayers find a whole bunch of agencies that are tasked with enforcing the law and it has not been done. let's do it and then see where
1:10 pm
we end up. >>. >> on that don has spoken to get all of the 11 million the way that he talked about it out of the country. there's confusion on if he supports that. you said that he has not talked about that in a few months but trump supporter and adviser says that it's part of it. the idea of a deportation force is the idea of the current plan. is that accurate? >> i think that you have go back to mr. trump's speech that was a month ago and say that there's no deportation force mentioned in there. the media does not want to cover what's really happening in the campaign in the two weeks. two weeks ago the entire network was obsessed with hair on fire. look at the polls the race is over. now that they're tightening, no one wants to talk about the polls. listen to his -- he speaks from himself and the campaign. he is the face of the campaign
1:11 pm
and running for president and deliver the speech tomorrow. it's going to be the toughest on illegal immigration and he means it. he has meant it from day one. we talk about protecting the american workers. he is the first one to talk act it through the economic lens in the last several years at the very least if not longer. that's important. you see many out of work americans that are saying look, i'm competing with folks in mexico and china and folks within my neighborhood that are willing to take the money under the table and not pay taxes on it and live in the shadows and it's not fair. you know what i hear all of the time? i hear two words in focus groups, struggling and fair. people want fairness. that's at the heart of this. i want to go back because no one wants to talk about the polls tightening. here we are tightening everywhere and then more
1:12 pm
importantly the state college came out with the polls and shows us ahead or within striking distance and then the margin of error and michigan and hawaii. 44 percent of the american woman saying that they're going vote for clinton a female president. we feel really good because we're taking the case to the people. immigration tomorrow and law enforcement, communities of color, destroying isis and then in the last ten weeks. this is the way that we're going run the campaign. we're going to talk to people on policy. >> well, in the bigger question you have the speech set tomorrow and then the attention this week and the debates. we're about a month away from the first debate. now, there's a bipartisan that b picks the rules and hillary clinton campaign say that is they have accepted it. donald trump has unofficially
1:13 pm
accepted it. is he looking for changes. by that decision these are commercial free events. i know that the others had breaks in them. is he looking for a break or a different format? what are you looking for in the debate? >> no, we have been comfortable in what we have seen. we have been responsive from them and a number of people and including myself that's part of the decision and these decisions rest with mr. trump and we feel comfortable and ready to get out in the debate stage. we can show up with a candidate that's already talking about policies. i think people want to know what hillary clinton thinks about the issues literally have to tune into the debates to watch it. that's a shame that people have to wait until november 26 to wait on what she believes unless you want to go to the website and click on it. we feel comfortable and have a

number of people. we're kbieted for the debate season. >> joining us from trump tower. thank you for the time. i appreciate it. >> thank you steve. still to come it's primary day in big states. a big test for john mccain playing out in arizona. also one of the most controversial leader in the party and facing the voters with the career on if line. we will tell you what is happening and it's a challenge that no candidate has ever faced. we were just talking about it. how do you plan for a one on one debate when the opponent is donald trump. we're learning the tricks that the clinton campaign maybe planning. we're going to take you through that and how come it's still close after a few brutal weeks of donald trump. there's a reason and it's part of our most important number to have day. stay with us. hi, i'm here with some advice from the future don't buy makeup that settles into lines, it ages you.

1:18 pm
from donald trump's much anticipated immigration speech tomorrow to an apology from a trump pastor and let's go to the washington post and political reporter with the boston globe and dan balls let's start with you and looking ahead to the speech that donald trump is going to give tomorrow. we're two months way from the election day and this is immigration and he finds himself explain what it is and what he is not calling for. what can we accomplish from the speech tomorrow? >> well, he can accomplish one important thing and that's to state clearly what the policy is and the degree to which he has
1:19 pm
had any change of views. he has campaigned on this issue as the signature issue from the day he announced the candidacy and there's no question on exact wla he has meant or intends to do if he is president. i think that clarity is the most important. obviously he is trying to walk a fine line and continue to hold close those trump voters who were cheered by the rhetoric that he used early on in the campaign and trying to broaden the base by appearing to soften a bit and he will not call it that in order to try to win over some of the voters and the more moderate voters perhaps within the republican party that have been reluctant to support him. it's not an easy path to walk, and we will see how successful he is in the stating it tomorrow and then sticking to it after that. >> yeah, that's what i was listening for and talking to delhi an kelly anne conway.
1:20 pm
what dan is describing and that bind that trump is in and he got them in absolute and being very adamant that everybody was going to be deport and trying to keep the voters while appealing to people that were turned off by the tone. is there any room for him to do that that you can see? >> well, i think we're going to find as the don don conversatiod how fast we're deporting them in the country. in the past he said it would be so that's the head would spin. it may not be that fast, but he is committed to the cause. the one thing that's important to note is that as the national polls and state polls have been tightening as dan eluded to you still have roughly one out of five republicans that say that they're not with trump and maybe they made up the mind to vote for clinton and still undecided. if he can bring them into the fold this race is interesting. >> yeah, we just put the number
1:21 pm
up and can show it again. this is the monkey poll out today and hillary clinton with a six point lead and there was another one from yesterday and they put it at seven. it's a lead for clinton and not as big as it was coming out of the convention and then the bounce seemed to have faded and kelly anne was trying to make the point and saying that you're not covering the tightening of the polls and then the coverage should be a more blow out. is there a defiant expectation here and based on how rough the last few weeks are for the campaign. >> well, let's say that it's a six point race at this point. that's not a particularly close race given resent history. a six point race is quit significant college victory for hillary clinton. if that number continues to go down, and one would have expected that it's going to drift down from where it would
1:22 pm
have been and that's eight or nine points just giving the nature of the country and the fact that republicans and democrats tend to go home closer to the election. they revert to the form, so you would expect that it would tighten some. i think we will have to watch over the next couple of weeks as we go to the debates if it's going to tighten significantly. if it stay in the five to six point range, that's still a long range for them to make up. >> we mentioned this at the top and then the controversy today and the pastor mark burns and adviser to donald trump and he tweeted yesterday a cartoon of hillary clinton with black face and got a lot of backlash for that and he said i'm sorry for the offensive image but stand by the message that we're being used by dems for votes. don and the push for black support that he is lauchb asking who is the tart audience.
1:23 pm
is it black audiences or a way to reacquaint sure white voters that he has lost? >> yeah, one thing that we're see for the last ten day social security this that donald trump has been trying to rebrand himself in the approach to the suburban whites for example. it's the case on race or on immigration. he has been vacillating on that for ten days now. you're seeing that dynamic and delivering this audience and what do you have to lose to largely white audiences and white communities and making the pitch more to them than the african american community. >> okay. james bindal and dan balls thank you. >> thanks. psychologist and ghost writers. who is strong enough to rattle

1:32 pm
know what it's all about? >> probably not. >> reporter: probably not. so are you voting for trump in november? >> i was voting for trump. >> if i was in a corner and had to vote it would be -- >> reporter: mary? >> don't listen to them. >> i have to go with clinton. >> reporter: if they came to the corn maze, who is going make it out first? >> neither. >> reporter: that's like me. that's why i have to follow you out of here. >> reporter: steve, after this aired o today i got this tweet. honestly a corn maze, you can do better than that. typical, stereotype here. well, christina joins me live and she is a hillary clinton clinton supporter and asked me to come out to iowa. i want to give you ten or 15

1:36 pm
over and over again for the days after wards. i think there's a handful of issues that they can get him to say something that he will regret. >> when they look at don what do they think that the biggest tracks are for clinton and standing up there for 90 minutes? >> yeah, there's a concern on the way that they have handled questions on the e-mail server and they think that this is an opportunity for her and they expect to tax him on the score and really have a little bit more and answering the questions and really sort of leveling the american people in a way that some of the allies think she she is not affective. >> the other question here is about the debate prep sessions. they have the fake debates and nobody is surprised by anything when they get on stage. that's the skbrd the question is who is going play donald trump with clinton behind the scenes? you had some interesting names in the piece. >> there are some number of names that have float and the
1:37 pm
campaign is with this obviously. there's the journalist dream that some of the allies are out there. not a lot of reason to believe that the campaign is focused on people like that. somebody like a bradley we have heard about and the representative from queens and brings that physicality and new york attitude. they think that he is someone to stand in. or a ron flame that's involved with hillary clinton. >> yeah he certainly seems to be gaining. i don't think that they have reached out to him, but that's information. >> they ought to put him on television. matt, an interesting report. >> appreciate it. staying with both candidates at a historic high. it's not only doubled since 2012 but the number of the day right after this. just like the people

negative view of both clinton skbh more than ahalf say that they have a negative view. historical historically, that's going to kill the campaign. that matches that and exceeds that. that's at 57 percent negative and both major party nominees and more than half of the country say that there's a negative view of both of them individually. you put them together and if you don't like them both, it's 35 percent 35 percent that don't like them at the same time. look how higher that is than the past elections. that's five percent and then 2004 the race and then 96 and then now 35 percent. so you can look at all of the bad news that donald trump's hit all of the speed bumps and self-inflicted wounds. it's put him behind in the race. if you're wondering why the

in arizona's senate and getting out to the polls on a primary day here at the end of august. now, this is obviously been an unusual presidential election and then the nature of donald trump's compare is more focus than usual on the races down the ballot that can show up the influence of congress. go key states holding primaries today. arizona and john mccain and also florida. let's start by looking at arizona. john mccain facing a republican primary challenge. kelly ward is his oopponents. he is running to his right and a donald trump message. she took shots on john mccain and saying that he is too old to serve. the polls have shone that they're in good position and handling the ward in the most resent polls and the question is
1:49 pm
not just today but it's today as to november. he has a strong opponent this november congresswoman anne kirk patrick looking at this race and perhaps don could have trouble carrying this state and if donald trump has trouble, then maybe john mccain could get caught up in that as well and could give the democrats in the race and then you see that it has mccain out to an early advantage and a lot of people look at the race and say that there's volatility here and one of the things to look at as the race playing out is how is john mccain going to handle having donald trump -- donald trump that said that he was not a war hero and how will he handle running against him on the same ticket. kelly is there today and what are you hearing on that? >> reporter: well, they have tried to keep an arms length or
1:50 pm
distance from donald trump. john mccain said that he would support the nominee of the party long before it was determined that donald trump would be the nominee. that's in part of being a republican. he was the nominee in 2008 and once that was made, wanted to stand by it. when trump is saying things or doing things that he does not agree with. certainly when it comes to conservative voters and trump supporters, mccain needs them today to help them clear the hurdle against a 47-year-old former state legislature and a physician in kelly ward that's very critical on things like his age and she is really from that sort of trump wing and then the anger that's formed around the voters that want to see the change. so mccain cannot distance himself too much with the risk

of alien nating and the thing that he has said is that he has 100 percent named id. something that politicians work hard to get and few have. they know him in arizona, and he will try to rely on that personal relationship with the voters here. the record here and try to keep the distance from trump. steve? >> all right. kelly o'donnell out in knee nph. we're going to look at the key picks in florida. let's start with debbie wasserman schultz's and what was the problem? well, the e-mails that came to light that seemed to confirm the suspension of the sanders campaign. the bernie sanders campaign that top democrats has been actively supporting hillary clinton and was not neutral in the primary.
1:52 pm
so she stepped down and then facing a challenge from this man. we were showing him a minute ago and had he is endorsed and raised millions of dollars and it's a serious challenge and the good news for her and now the good news is in this district back in the democratic my mary bernie sanders did not do well. so for her to standing accused to too close to the clinton campaign and from her stand point this is a good district to be accused of that in. we learn that fate tonight and then another key race is the us senate playing out. now, remember he said that he was not running for re-election and changed his mind. he is running and then a token opposition and expected to survive that on the democratic side and then all of the

national demographics supporting him and well known figure and domestic violence accusations against alan grayson may have settled this one. murphy maybe successful and that's going to set up a badle for rubeio and murphy. this is one of the states that murphy is trailing in the state. this is a state that they look at and saying if hillary clinton can get a win in florida and a solid win in florida could that carry over to the senate race? again another one of the act ward situations and rubeio and a lot to chew on and casey hunt is in florida and following the campaign and what do you have? >> reporter: heerks if you listen to mark who could have

known that we could be here covering the race and he said over and over again how frustrated that he was with the senate while he was the presidential candidate. he said that he was quote and the advisers november quote in the postsaying that he hates it. he says hate is not the word that i would use. he used the explanation that he was going to be a private citizen next january as a reason why he was missing a lot of votes in the senate. this clearly is plan b for mark rubio. he is expecting to cruise to victory against carlos later on tonight and then he is expected to likely face democratic murphy in the fall. murphy has a primary of his own. the challenge for rubio is as florida is going forward in the race, how does he on the one hand tell floridians to vote for
1:55 pm
don a donald trump and then on the record of negative comments from donald trump and then he talked to the miami her arld board and he said that he stands by all of his statements. the question is if he adjusts a little bit once he is clear to try to dtance himself more from donald trump for the sake of win over more swing voters. at this point the race here and florida always close and democrats are optimistic of winning here than in iowa. that might put rubio in a situation that he is running behind the democrats running. he has that advantage and it's interesting to me so see if he can put more space in himself and trump and whether he is able to carve out a model and get re-elected here.

hard ball. firsttp daily with chuck todd starts now. if it's tuesday, somebody is voting somewhere. there are a lot of somewhere's today. the air of revolution, that's going nowhere. >> tonight whatever happened to the trump and sanders revolution. it seems to be fading in a down ballot whisper. >> as americans our goal must be to elect progressives at every level. >> plus, exactly how much of a threat are russian hackers to national security in this election? and rick perry from debating other candidates. >> oops. >> to rehabbing with the stars. this is mtp daily, and it starts right
