but westbrook's anaconda's problem is still present and accounted for. sleep tight. sleep tight. "first look" is up next. by the way, the current president of mexico said he would meet with you. will you meet with him? >> yeah, sure. >> you would? >> absolutely. i'd meet with him. >> it's official. donald trump will have a last-minute meeting with the president of mexico just as he's expected to deliver a make or break speech on immigration. plus coming out of retirement. marco rubio wins and wins big. he was planning on quitting politics. but now he won't swear off a 2020 run for the white house. and one of the biggest stars in women's soccer won't play again this year. the latest chapter in the tough year for hope solo.
2:01 am
good morning, everybody. it's wednesday, august 31st, i'm betty nguyen alongside louis burgdorf. with just 69 days to go, donald trump is set to meet with his first head of state in a last-minute announcement that took the political world by surprise. "the washington post" was first to report that trump and mexico's president will meet today in mexico city. "the new york times" reports he will travel to mexico. "the post" reporting it will be between a fund-raiser in california, and a major speech on immigration in arizona. now last at about 10:30 eastern trump confirmed saying i have accepted the invitation of president enrique pena nieto of mexico and look forward to meeting him tomorrow. "the post" reports peen yeto extended the offer to trump and clinton and trump pushed for a visit this week. among those advocating the trip according to reports were
2:02 am
stephen bannon and new jersey governor chris christie whose 2014 visit to mexico was a precursor to his presidential campaign. the mexican president added a personal message late last night saying quote i invited the u.s. presidential candidates to mexico to discuss the bilateral relationship. tomorrow i welcome donald trump. i believe in dialogue to promote the interests of mexico in the world and mainly to protect mexicans wherever they are. from the beginning of his campaign, trump has branded mexico as a source of crime flooding into the u.s., as he did at a border visit in laredo last july. >> people are saying oh, it's so dangerous what you're doing mr. trump, it's so dangerous what you're doing. i have to do it. i have to do it. >> what danger are you talking about? >> there's great danger with the illegals and we're just discussing that. but we have a tremendous danger on the border with the illegals coming in. >> have you seen any evidence here to confirm your fears about mexico sending its criminals across the border? >> yes, i have. and i've heard it. and i've heard it from a lot of different people. >> now democrat hillary clinton has also received an invitation
2:03 am
to visit president pena nieto whom she last met with in 2014 but so far no meeting is planned. in response to trump's visit a spokesperson said donald trump has painted mexicans as rapists and criminals and promised to deport 16 million people including children and u.s. citizens. he has said we should force mexico to pay for his giant border wall. he has said we should ban remittances to families in mexico if mexico doesn't pay up. what ultimately matters is what donald trump says to voters in arizona, not mexico and whether he remains committed to the splitting up of families and deportation of millions. trump has had a volatile relationship with mexico's leaders over the past 14 months of his candidacy. publicly taunting them for saying they will not pay for his promised border wall, including a charge back and forth with former president vicente fox. >> the president of mexico yesterday, or the ex-president, whatever, whoever, who cares, he
2:04 am
said we will not even consider paying for the wall. you ready? who's going to pay for the wall? [ crowd chanting "mexico" ] >> who? [ crowd chanting "mexico" ] >> 100%. >> i declare, i'm not going to pay for that [ bleep ] wall. he should pay for it. he's got the money. democracy -- to crazy people that do not know what's going on in the world today. >> in march current mexican president pena nieto said trump's tone was how mussolini got in, how hitler got in. he said the comparison was a call for reflection and recognition. the visit comes at a low point for the mexican leader. a poll earlier this month found his job approval rating at just 23% with a 74% disapproving. the lowest level since he took office back in december of 2012. the mexican president has stood firm against trump's proposals while seeing the need for a
2:05 am
strong relationship if he turns out to be the next president. >> under no circumstances would mexico pay for that wall? >> there is no way that mexico can pay a wall like that. but any decision can be taken for the government of the united states. >> we have to make it very clear that development and prosperity in the united states is built necessarily through the prosperity of its neighboring countries. we also have to bear in mind that the security of the united states is linked with the security of its neighboring countries. this is what we have been doing with the u.s. government. we have a relationship of coordination, collaboration and cooperation in the area of security. >> betty this morning the islamic state group's second in command has reportedly been killed. the terror groups news agency announced the death of abu mohammed al adnani, killed while surveying operations to repel the military campaigns against aleppo and the pentagon could not confirm his death. but said quo ligs forces were carrying out air strikes
2:06 am
targeting him near the border of turkey. now al adnanty is perhaps best known for issuing the proclamation for lone wolves to kill westerners in september of 2014. joining us now msnbc foreign correspondent ayman mohyeldin. he was an extremely high value target to the united states actually one of the top on the list with $5 million bounty on his head. what does this mean if this is actually confirmed? >> well the significance of it is that it has been confirmed by isis' news channels. and that's kind of rare for the organization to come out so quickly and acknowledge the death of one of its most senior officials. there is a certain degree of validity and truth to that. but the significance of it for the organization can really be seen on two fronts. the long-term and the short-term. there's no doubt in the short-term this is going to have a significant impact. the organization within the organization, he was seen as a person who oversaw its external operations. he inspired attacks. he was also a tactician, a strategist. you would see him on the battlefield given the fact that, you know, according to this claim by the news agency, he was
2:07 am
out on the battlefield surveying the operations that isis was engaged in. so to give you a sense that he wasn't just an inspirational figure and somebody who would just put out these recordings but somebody who had a tactical perspective within the organization. so that's going to be a huge setback for isis. but in the long-term we've seen isis have the ability to generate new leadership when other ones have been killed. so this is going to be a significant setback in the short-term, but in the long-term, you can imagine that isis is going to have a new generation of leaders that would be willing to step in and fill that role at some point. >> ayman mohyeldin, thanks so much for your reporting on that. hillary clinton spent last night fund-raising for a third day in the upscale beach towns of the hamptons in new york. the final stop was a star-studded affair. hillary clinton danced with sir paul mccartney while jimmy buffett played cheeseburger in paradise at his home. the night reportedly ended with the former beatle, buffett and jon bon jovi singing hey jude. but while they danced inside,

more news made a splash outside about her use of private e-mails. the state department revealed yesterday it has found as many as 30 additional e-mails from her server that may be related to the benghazi attacks. those e-mails come from the cache of 15,000 the fbi had to recover forensically, but some could be duplicates. and later today the fbi may release their report they handed over to the justice department, not recommending charges, which could include agent notes. and in florida, senator marco rubio easily won his republican primary. he walked away with 72% of the vote over his top challenger. come november rubio will face congressman patrick murphy who won the democratic senate primary with nearly 60% of the vote. donald trump's running mate mike pence tweeted a photo of his phone call congratulating him on the win. kasie hunt also caught up with rubio after his victory and asked him about what florida voters see in donald trump. >> you once said that donald trump is going to make america

orange again. is that the kind of person you're trying to convince floridians to be president now? >> look he's not running against george washington. he's running against hillary clinton. but, it was one of the most dishonest people to run for president, i'm running for the senate and that's an independent branch of government, and one that has an important role in our constitution and i can't wait to get back there. >> nice reporting by kasie hunt there. meanwhile questions are being raised as to whether senator rubio still has presidential ambitions. during an interview yesterday he wouldn't commit to serving out a full six-year senate term. >> no one can make that commitment because you don't know what the future is going to hold in your life personally or politically. i can commit to you this, that is that if i am running to be a u.s. senator. i am fully prepared to allow the u.s. senate to be the last political office i ever hold. >> in the senate i will fight for you every single day. you compare that to senator rubio, who just yesterday said no one can make a commitment to a six-year term. well guess what, senator?
2:10 am
i've got two words for you, i can. >> congresswoman debbie wasserman schultz also won her primary last night with nearly 57% of the vote. she fended off her bernie sanders backed challenger tim canova but canova wasn't ready to concede. >> it isn't over till it's over and i'll start off right now by saying i'm not quite ready to concede anything yet. this is -- a still maintain that what this is about is we're fighting for american democracy. this has been a rigged system, and everyone knows it. >> according to a reporter from the miami herald canova later said quote i will concede debbie wasserman schultz is a corporate stooge. there you go. some tough words there. >> wow. okay. still ahead, new video showing hope solo's reaction to her latest suspension from u.s. soccer. plus, more legal problems for singer chris brown after an hour's long standoff with los angeles police. those stories and a check on the weather when we come back.

welcome back. time to get a check on your weather with nbc meteorologist bill karins. bill, hurricane lester, hurricane madeline, all kind of heading towards hawaii. >> yeah. those two definitely have hawaii's attention. while we are in the southeast u.s. and even on the east coast all watching what's going to happen in the gulf of mexico. the new advisory from the national hurricane center. there are some changes, new warnings and the forecast track has shifted. affecting millions of more people than what was expected yesterday. so let me get into the details. first thing we're watching the storm. it's still out over the open waters of the gulf, thankfully it hasn't strengthened. it's gotten a little bit larger but the winds haven't picked up as of yet. i mean, we're lucky that this is not turning into a beast of a storm. because with this forecast path going to affect millions of people. we want it to remain as weak as possible. it has 48 hours to intensify,
2:15 am
after that it really shouldn't. what has changed. tropical storm warnings are now in effect, this is the tampa area. the orange is a tropical storm warning north of tampa to cedar key back across the northern portions of florida, apalachicola, panama city. so yesterday things weren't looking too bad in panama city, apalachicola. forecast has shifted a little bit further to the west and it looks like more of a direct impact in the tallahassee area, too. so we're going to have to watch that. the yellow is tropical storm watches. let me give you the new forecast path from the hurricane center. still tropical depression. they believe by 1:00 a.m., probably about later today, 5:00 p.m. named hermione and take that storm towards tallahassee. 65-mile-per-hour winds, that's not enough to do a lot of significant damage so that's good. but still we will get some storm surge problems through the big bend back to tampa. notice how far inland this track is now. north of savannah to charleston, direct hit south carolina, and all through north carolina. notice the winds don't diminish. if anything it could intensify as it comes back off the coast.
2:16 am
for all of those areas we have to watch it. finally what's also interesting is that the cone does now include eastern long island, rhode island, and all the way up to the boston area. the forecast path still has it going offshore but there are some computer models that take it back toward new england later on saturday into saturday night. so a lot of things to watch. the biggest thing, though, is we need this thing to stay weak because it looks for certain to affect millions. >> going to be a wet holiday weekend for a lot of folks. >> most of it will be gone by saturday afternoon. but, it's going to be interesting. >> okay, bill, thank you. the embattled governor of maine hinted yesterday that he may step down amid calls for his resignation only to just hours later reject the idea. in a radio interview governor paul lepage apologized for threatening a state lawmaker last week and openly questioned whether he was still up to the task of governing. >> i'm looking at all options. i think some things i've asked to do are beyond my ability and i'm not going to say that i'm not going to finish it.
2:17 am
i'm not saying that i am going to finish it. if i've lost my ability to convince the maine people that's what we need and that's the type of people we need in augusta, then you know, maybe it is time to move on. >> all right. but hours later, lepage appeared to back track tweeting regarding rumors of resignation to paraphrase mark twain the reports of my political demise are greatly exaggerated. lepage also announced that he would be meeting later today with a lawmaker he threatened. >> i want to look him in the eye and apologize if i have to. but at the same token, i think he owes me a little bit of an apology so i think meeting face-to-face we might be able to resolve things. if we can't, we can't. then we move on. >> state democratic leaders continue to call for lepage to resign after he blamed maine's opioid crisis on blacks and hispanics coming from out of state. however, maine house republicans decided to stand by lepage choosing not to take any action against the governor. more than 1,000 residents in indiana are scrambling to find new homes after finding out the

soil outside of their housing complex is highly toxic, in an incident being compared to the flint, michigan, water crisis. the east chicago residents were nfd last month about the dangerous levels of lead and arsenic in the ground. at the time mayor anthony copeland told residents they would have to move out and the complex would be demolished. but the chicago tribune reports the environmental protection agency says not all residents will be displaced as they try to clean the contaminated soil. meanwhile the northwest indiana times says last month mayor copeland accused the epa of withholding data about the contamination found in the soil. the paper says that the mayor told the agency that early tests found excessive levels of lead in the blood of hundreds of children. the agency told the paper that in retrospect, spikes seen in the initial soil data and more inspection of it could have resulted in action being taken sooner, and they now have 70 people working the site. >> really scary story for those children. all right let's turn now to some entertainment news. r&b singer chris brown was arrested yesterday after a woman

five minutes to write. now let's go to those critical downballot races we've been following, it's on to the general election for senator john mccain after defeating his closest primary challenger by nearly 62,000 votes in last night's senate primary. the long time senator won 52% of the republican vote. followed by kelli edwards' nearly 39%. that means he'll face democratic congresswoman ann kirkpatrick in the general election during his victory speech in phoenix early this morning senator mccain said it's critical for republicans to maintain their majority in congress, and to check the next president no matter whom he or she is. >> republicans must be willing to put forward smart commonsense effective policies and we must be able to resist from a position of strength ideas coming from the next white house, whoever occupies it, that would take the country in the wrong track. it's imperative republicans maintain our majorities in

congress. it's important to america's future that we have a say over the next president's appointments to this united states supreme court. >> speaking after her loss ward said quote sadly the establishment seems to have won this battle by spending untold millions to calm the liberal, dangerous, weak some other things, too she also said the republican party cannot win as a national party if we keep nominating unprincipled career politicians whose only objective is perpetual re-election. we should also note that controversial maricopa county sheriff joe par ao who is accused of racially profiling hispanics during traffic stops also won his primary. and as we go to florida senator marco rubio easily won his republican primary he walked away with 72% of the vote over his top challenger. come november rubio will face congressman patrick murphy who won the democratic senate primary with nearly 60% of the vote. the fall match-up could
2:41 am
potentially help decide which party controls the senate next year though rubio had famously said he would not be a part of it. >> this has been an unusual road back here with you tonight. as you know, after my race ended in marv for the presidency i was prepared to become a private citizen, and i was not just prepared to be so but i was excited about what that meant. time with our family. other opportunities. but i just couldn't be at peace with the idea that we were going to not just potentially lose the senate seat but lose the balance of power in the senate at this critical moment in our nation's history. >> you know, i heard senator rubio say not too long ago, 10,000 times, i'm telling you that i'm going to be a private citizen in january. so you all ready to give him what he really wants come january? >> all right let's turn now to business where apple stock dipped yesterday after the technology giant was hit with a $14 billion bill and back taxes from the european commission. cnbc's hadley gamble joins us now live from london with more on this.
2:42 am
hadley, how much would this bill weigh on the future of the company? >> well, that's the big question, betty, isn't it? not just for apple but for other major u.s. multinational companies as well. listen the ec basically said what apple was doing in ireland was illegal paying that 1% or less in corporate tax they said it really wasn't based in economic reality and it isn't as if apple can't afford to pay in 2015 they made a net profit of some you know several several billion here we're talking about $53 billion. but at the end of the day this is going to have a knock-on effect not just in terms of the location of the company going forward but on jobs, and there's a high probability that this cost is going to be passed on to consumers in the u.s. another story that we're watching is this story about this zika blood test apparently the company that made an emergency request for the fda to pass a test that would be able to detect zika in the blood is now withdrawing that request, and essentially that means that they think that the accuracy of the test is in question the fda went after the company they said
2:43 am
that this company didn't follow proper procedures so a lot of questions as to what happens next for that company. now another story we're talking about of course is google ride sharing in san francisco. their new program is going to be taking on uber and lyft. and apparently those rides are costing some 53 cents less per mile than the rivals. very exciting. >> that's a big deal for travelers, too. quite a deal. all right hadley gamble live from london. thank you for that. and betty still ahead, president obama hits a new record with his latest round of prison commutations. >> plus nasa is keeping a close eye on hurricane madeline headed to hawaii and another storm headed for florida's gulf coast. bill karins joins us with the latest on that.

slick videos that we've seen, the very gruesome videos that we've come to see and learn that isis produces, that helps recruit individuals to the battlefield. so there's no doubt that he was extremely important in the day-to-day operations and in the ideology of the organization. but one thing that we've also seen the group capable of doing is it has the ability to generate new leadership, sometimes even more extreme than what we've seen in the past. and in this case, time will tell which direction isis will go following the deadly airstrike. on one hand it could be like al qaeda following the killing of osama bin laden. al qaeda's central was extremely weakened following osama bin laden's killing. or we could see a new generation of isis leaders emerge that are even more potent, more lethal than abu adnani. hard to imagine but a lot of people are going to be in the wings ready to take his place. isis has demonstrated it has the ability to generate that kind of new leadership. >> ayman mohyeldin, thank you. when we come back we'll get a check on the stories in the day ahead.
