after he met with the mexican president. this is a portion of the show i like to call huh. what is this about? >> reporter: he was angered the mexican president came out and said they did in fact discuss the wall. there is a report out saying that at the last minute a changed his policy speech. when it comes to immigration your confusion is shared by many. is he going to wait and see how things go? if he waits and see how things go, how is that immigration policy any different than we are doing right now. >> so changing his position on a national policy that would effect the whole policy because he is mad about what mexico's president said to him. i want to talk more about that

completely scripted? >> reporter: yeah. it is the first real african american outreach. it is something they were hoping to highly orcestrate. he would be able to script word for word his answers. they were even going to be vetted by a number of black ministers to make sure they set the right tone. the campaign went back and said donald trump is now going to be speak wg this congregation for five to ten minutes. they are changing up their plans given this very damming report. >> and i hear that and i think it's crazy he is having a

the latest jobs numbers do not portray the accurate jobs situation. they say this gives us a picture of the country that is massively polarized headed into this election. how do you feel about the jobs number in terms of an actual

connection to the economy? >> i think we had a slight disappointment. we came in 30,000 shy of it. i don't think it does anything to change our picture of the economy and more importantly voters pictures of the economy. it is bake into the landscape that we have a sustained, decent, middling recovery that isn't delivering higher living standards to too many people. and so people don't feel great about the state of the economy. they don't feel horrible either. that's where it is. interestingly both candidates are not emphasizing the economy. it is how donald trump is unfit in her view to be president and he will be tough on immigration and can't be trusted. >> is it especially hard for hillary clinton?

she is phone shlgetting it fromt obama. he was touting the extraordinary economic recovery we have seen. anyone who says anything different is touting lies. hillary clinton needs to continue it on if she wants to maintain the support of the people who support barack obama. how does she do that with wage growth, what it is and all of these disenfranchised americans. >> the argument she is making is that the president deserves more credit than he has gotten for the economy. she is proposing to raise more taxes to fund spending on issues that she thinks is important, education, infrastructure, job training. she is coming out with a middle class tax cut. we have two months left. i would expect it to come some point this fall. because it is middling people

can paint whatever picture they want. donald trump can emphasize how weak it is and how stagnant it has been for quite a long time. that's true. hillary clinton says some of that too. she can focus more on the positive and look at what's happened to the unemployment rate and look at private sector job creation and try to argue that she is going to push it along a little more aggressively. >> the unemployment number is double for african americans than it is for kau cautiocaucas. does he have an argument to be made? does he have a point? certainly african americans are not doing as well in this economy as white americans are. that's been try for quite a long time. their unemployment rate is higher. that's a different question from whether or not they believe that

donald trump will make things better for them. it is also a different question about whether they feel insulted by the way donald trump is describing their communities. hillary clinton is getting around 90% of african american votes. he is going to try to make a dent in that, not clear whether he expects to get more african american support or reassure some white americans that he is a good hearted person but he will give it a shot tomorrow. >> if you look at corporate spending, with the threat of more regulations. we just lost 14,000 manufacturing jobs. >> that's part of the equation. corporate tax reform, something that would bring back some of the money that's parked

million in august for her campaign as well as the national ad and state democratic parties. those private fund raisers have kept her off the trail and it has meant some bad optics for the candidate. joining me now, senior political editor, mark murray. mark, it is game on after labor day. hillary just raised a ton of money. what does she need to do with it? >> well, what she needs to do is spend it over the next two months. and i do think there was a strategy from the clinton campaign on how to handle the last two weeks in august. and do remember in past presidential cycles, late august and early september is the conventi convention season. this is the first campaign when the conventions both happen in july so now is time to hit the campaign trail or raise money. and what the clinton campaign decided to do, use the last two weeks of august to raise a tremendous amount of money so they don't have to hit the fund raising trail again or at least

florida in 11 years. at this hour, hundreds of thousands are without power. most of those outages concentrated in florida and georgia, as well. states of emergency have been declared in parts of florida, georgia, and north carolina. the biggest threats for states in the path of hermine now, rain, wind and storm surge. we have a team of reporters from nbc and the weather channel fanned out covering this thing. let's start on the florida panhandle, and apalachicola where gabe gutierrez is surveying the aftermath. gabe, what are you seeing? >> reporter: hi, craig. good morning. yes, as you mentioned, hermine now a tropical storm slammed into florida's panhandle overnight, downing trees and almost 200,000 people across several states without power. as you mentioned, craig, parts of georgia and north carolina now also under a state of emergency. overnight, hurricane hermine slammed into florida's
