sglrvegs that's going to wrap up our coverage for this hour i'm thomas roberts. kate snow is here. >> people should watch you on "nightly news." before everybody heads out the door. if it you're lucky enough to be going on vacation, we have breaking news to tell you about right now. the fbi released notes from their interview with hillary clinton. what we know now coming up in a few seconds. we're watching this deadly storm now racing across florida. the northeast in its sights. we'll have a live report on what to expect from the panhandle for you. we begin the show with that breaking news about 58 pages of material from the fbi on the recently closed investigation into hillary clinton's private e-mail server including a summary of clinton's interview
12:01 pm
with the fbi. for more, let's turn to kristen kel ter, she has been looking into this all afternoon. your team is furiously digging through these pages. what have we learned so far? >> i'll give you some of the top lines. one of them has to do with whether or not hillary clinton's e-mail server was hacked. according to this investigation fbi investigation and forensic analysis did not find evidence confirming the e-mail accounts were compromised by cyber means. however, it also notes this is not a conclusive investigation and that the fbi did find that hostile foreign actors gained k access to the e-mail accounts of individuals whom clinton was in regular contact. a couple more top lines there. the fbi says they found that there were multiple occurrences of fishing or spear fishing e-mails sent to clinton's private server. also that hillary clinton did open an e-mail that contained a

potentially malicious link. so again, no indication that her account was acted, but that's not conclusive. we're getting our first e reaction from the clinton campaign. we are please d that the fbi ha released the materials from hillary clinton's interview as we had requested. while her use of a sung l e-mail account was a mistake and has taken responsibility, these materials made clear why the justice department believed there was no basis to move forward with this case. when she decided to use a private e-mail server, this has been one of the hot topics on the campaign into a lack of trust and background about what these documents actually are. here they are. about 58 pages. these are the notes that the fbi took during hillary clinton's july 2nd interview with them. and again, important to

underscore james comey ultimately decided that her actions were careless but not criminal. he said that there was no basis for an indictment. >> kristen welker following all of that and we'll be speaking with a clinton supporter in a few minutes. let's switch over to the trump campaign now. the trump campaign released a statement. hillary clinton is applying for a job that begins each day with a top secret intelligence briefing and the notes from her fbi interview he enforce her bad judgment and dishonesty. donald trump not having any rallies today. he's been having an event we may see at some point.

tell us what that was about. for florida's attorney general. that was violating tax code. that's why they had to pay the fine. it's also suspicious timing because it happened in 2013 when she was considering looking into bringing charges against trump universi university. those charges never materialized making some to wonder if it they did not materialize because donald trump's foundation gave money to a group that was associated with her campaign. the foundation is denying this. the campaign is denying this, but it's certainly the optics aren't as good as they would like them to be and allowing the clinton campaign to latch on to something that trump is in a

million vote. the latino cohort in this country is two-fold a threat to the republican party. number one, they used to split 65/35, kpet ty for republicans. now you're starting to see that group of people go a lot the way that african-americans are. if you get to a point they are 80/20, it gets difficult for republicans to put together a big enough coalition in the white house because the percentage of white voters is shrinking and shrinking by 2% every four years. . so it becomes a real problem. when you get to 2024, if the republican party is pulling 20% of the hispanic vote, they can't numerically win the white house. >> republicans echo that. it's not just democrats saying that. republicans realize it's an issue. >> this is the other part. a lot of analysises are looking at the fact that the trump campaign because of donald trump and his incendiary way of talking about people of color, they haven't been able to field

. donald trump takes his campaign to detroit tomorrow. trump will make his pitch to african-american voters at a black church there. as we reported in the past, trump is struggling to find support among african-american voters. polls show him in the single digits with black voters. earlier today the detroit free press published an article "for trump wooing detroit may be mission impossible." let's turn to detroit. what are folks saying? >> i spent the last two days talking to black voters here in detroit. they say they have been paying attention to donald trump's words and messages. especially as he hopped from

city to city talking about black folks in front of majority white crowds but never engaging themselves or talking to them. i spent a little time at a place called the motor city cafe with a group of black voters who feel impossib invisible. when donald trump is saying your neighborhood is no good, it translates to them not being any good and they don't lake it. even in this state where donald trump has an 8% approval rating among black voters and hillary clinton has about 80% of those who say they will vote for her, there's still some gop voters who say trump can make end roads into the black community. i spoke with wayne bradley who heads a republican outreach efforts for african-americans. here's what he had to say. >> you're a donald trump supp t supporter. is there some sort of magic formula? is there a plan or way to grow that support?

12:20 pm
after weeks of watching his team go back and forth on what his policy would be, he comes out on wednesday pretty clear hard line speech. but then this is what he said last night. >> we're going to get rid of all of the bad players that are here. the drug dealers, gang members. after that takes place, which will be a process and won't go that quickly but as quickly as any human being can do it, after that takes place we're going to sit back and assess the situation. we're going to see where we are because we'll have people in the country that have come in illegally. we're going to sit back and assess the situation. we're going to make a decision at that time. >> is he telegraphing that the deportations and all is going to happen until he gets elected but he's willing to change policy later? >> he's backing into something like the sensible immigration approach that mitt romney had in 2012. one of the themes of the election with the russians hacking dnc e-mails is mitt
12:21 pm
romney was right about everything. among the things he was right about was how you approach immigration. what donald trump seems to be saying, and this is not to justify donald trump as a human being, but what he's saying is first you have a real effort to remove immigrants who are lawbreakers. they have produced a statistical illusion they are removing a lot of people because it counts people apprehended at the border who were never counted before. they have artificially created an appearance that they are vigilant. >> you wrote after trump's speech tell me what shocks you and i'll tell you who you are. trump's policy maybe shocks a lot of people, but it resinates with a tlot of voters. do you see that message resinating? >> one of the things that speech in phoenix did was drive home how far the media conversation with immigration has drifted away from where the country is. people who arrived in the united

rehabilitation of the teleprompter. for eight years republicans have been saying it's so awful that president obama reads from a teleprompter. if i were somebody who an unfortune could move a stock market or move the price of oil or start a war, i would read from the teleprompter. you do that not because you're an atom on to, but people who you have hired and trust have worked out forms of words that aren't going to cause trouble, unwanted trouble. i'm pleased that donald trump is reading from a teleprompter. every presidential nominee should do it. >> two former secretary of state this afternoon saying in a joint statement they don't plan to make any kind of endorsement in it this election. we are dedicated to fostering a bipartisan foreign policy and will devote ourselves to this effort now and after the election. not getting a nod from two of the most prominent secretary of state in history. that can't be a good sign. >> and there was speculation they might endorse hillary

clinton. one of the things that's remarkable is you go through the list of people who held national security positions and past republican administrations a accept for johnolton and donald rumsfeld and dick cheney, donald trump doesn't seem to be getting the support of any of them. they are not endorsing hillary clinton, but they have their hands in their pocket. they are looking up and down and whistling. they are hearing their mother call iing, they have exciting hr washing opportunities in the months ahead and they are busy. >> david, thank you so much for being with us. appreciate it. senior editor at "the atlantic." have a good weekend. still to come, we're tracking hermine as it hits the carolinas. what's in store for the east coast? plus more on the just released notes from the fbi's interview with hillary clinton about her use of a private e-mail server while she was secretary of state. we'll get more reaction. we're still going through those documents. more information, when we come back.

we are still following that breaking news on the fbi releasing notes from the investigation into hillary clinton's private e-mail server and notes from the agent's interviews with hillary clinton. for more i want to bring in the president and ceo of the center for american progress action fund, long-time hillary clinton friend and supporter and hillary clinton's 2008 policy director. nice to see you. >> great to be with you. >> we have news this afternoon. let me ask you about it. the fbi notes in this release that e e-mail was potentially vulnerable to compromise when hillary clinton first began using her personal account in january 2009. this was because it wasn't until late march of 2009 a few months later that they set up log-in credentials and encryption. at another point clinton opened an e e-mail that contained a malicious link. she replied saying is this from you? i was worried about opening it.
12:29 pm
but the point is should they have acted more quickly to protect the information that was on that home server because it was several months of lack of encryption. >> i think as i read the materials it says, and of course, it just came out, but as i read the materials it points out that there isn't evidence of hacking. it's possible. but i think just to step back, this information is public. the campaign was happy it was released to everyone. not just to the hill. she's said numerous times now it was a mistake to set up the system. if she had to do it over again, shh wouldn't do it and recognizes it was a mistake plain and simple. so i think we can go back and litigate each and every decision, but she recognizes it was a mistake and she wouldn't do it again. she won't do it as president. i do think that at the most

people have registered concerns, but would like to talk about other issues that matter in their lives like the economy, jobs. >> but since this is just out this afternoon i want to ask a couple more about it. there's a note that andrea mut chel flagged for us. the fbi says that they asked clinton about a conversation she was having about the targeting of targets using drones. she says in one answer clinton did not indicate concern regarding the classification of deliberations over the targets of future drone strikes. did she maybe not understand all the the rules about classified information and material? >> i think she also said in the investigation that she was relying on other state department officials to not send information that was classified. she looked at the e-mails herself and when they were designated classified in the
12:31 pm
header, she noted that and obviously there was only a few e-mails and they don't have the typical designation. so i think that the broader issue is if she was careful and as she outlines, she tried to be careful where she e read her e-mail, where she -- which e-mail she used and what she said herself in those e-mails and in these cases you generally see that. when you see these e-mails, you see that. >> let me ask a simpler question. 272 days by our count. you know where i'm going. >> this is the simpler question? >> yes or no, will she have a press conference? >> i hope she has a press conference soon. she's going to be on the plane with the press. i know that -- >> monday she travels with the press. >> starting on monday she travels with the press. >> which is later than most campaigns typically have taken the press on board the plane.
12:32 pm
and donald trump is still not traveling with the press. >> that's a helpful point i was just about to make. the republican nominee is still not doing that. i'm sure the press will be asking her questions about the press conference. >> but you think she should have a press conference. >> the issue here is is she talking to the press, yes. she's held numerous interviews. she had interviews last week. it's late august. we're going to head into the stretch. there will be additional int interviews. we are having a very rich and robust debate about a particular format of conversation between the candidate and the press, which is i'm sure very enriching for most people. she is talking to reporters. she's being interviewed and last week on a series of cable stations including this one. i'm sure there will be more in the come iing weeks. >> she's been spending a lot of time fundraising. eric trump said that the trump campaign raised $5.2 million the

about him, the candidate or his companies in the future and what do they mean by future? i'll read to you the pretty sweeping legal document. this agreement will survive the expiration of any employment or independent contract relationship you may have with the company or any individual, entity, partnership, blah, blah, blah. translati translation, you have to refrain from talking about mr. trump or politics for the rest of your life because you volunteered. probably unenforceable because there's no consideration. they are not paying these people in the first place. >> you're not working for donald trump. in florida when i was down there, we ran into a woman who was the top caller asking for money. she was working out of her apartment. she had to call about five people before she was sure she could talk to me because she was scared because she signed this. i could tell she was worried about sang therong thing. >> there's this term that gets thrown around by lawyers and judges which is the chilling effect.

am i going to get cold from looking at this contract. you described a classic example of the chilling effect. you're talking about a citizen who is volunteering in a presidential election who has a right to speak how she chooses or not about the campaign, about these issues, this is an important public process. she's telling you because she looked at the paperwork, she's afraid to do so. >> e she did in the end. >> but chilling. it had that effect and concern. this is the candidate who has been telling everyone we shouldn't be pc. we should speak our minds. let's put aside all the rules and have an open conversation about where our country is headed. that's great. why are you then going further than any campaign we have ever seen give iing people legal thrs and gag orders so they don't speak their mind. >> we lo when you get high minded, by the way. ari melber, have a good weekend. when we come back, new controversy as nfl quarterback colin kaepernick continues his

the san francisco 49ers wrapped up their preseason last night and colin kaepernick chose not to stand during the national anthem. one teammate even joined him in taking a knee. after the game kaepernick promised to donate the first million dollars he earns this season to community organizations. but his protest has drawn a lot of criticism mostly from people accusing kaepernick of disrespecting the country and our military. joining me is roland martin, host of news one now on tv one. nice to see you. >> like wise. >> there seems to be three reactions to kaepernick.

for daring to speak out against it. >> how much of the outrage do you think is about respecting the flag and patriotism and how much of it is actually deep-seeded racism? >> no, first of all, i think it's a combination. i think americans, we love to ignore what the real issue is. and so folks don't want to deal with what he was speaking of. and that is police brutality. the need for social justice reform. you have more people who are outraged with kaepernick as opposed to a judge allowing a man who sexually assaulted an 8-year-old boy to get 30 days in prison because he felt prison would be too tough for him. just get him some counselling. we have problems in our criminal justice system. fans in cleveland who are more excited about the cavaliers winning a title as opposed to tamir rice being shot and killed by a cop. we have the case in chicago. again, everybody, oh, be quiet. let's be mad at colin but not the fact you have cops who
