tropical storm hermine working its way from florida to new york dampering labor day plans. once a hurricane, downgraded to a tropical storm. today virginia is in the storm's path and the eastern seaboard is bracing for what is to come. joining me now is bonnie schneider. good to have you here. first, tell us where it is and where headed. >> well, dara, there is a lot of danger with this storm because it will be long lasting. we will talk about hermine as we two through the straight part of next week. it is located 55 miles north of cape lookout. the convection into maryland, delaware, and even into new jersey shortly. winds 60 miles per hour. this is a powerful tropical storm. notice the track. this is a very unusual situation. as we stack it monday, be

tuesday, weapons, the storm sits offshore. this is bad for the jersey shore, the mid atlantic coast. as it sits there, it will bring about rough is surf and dangerous coastal flooding. it is not until thursday the storm pushes out. tuesday, we get back up to hurricane strength. it is going over the warm waters of the gulfstream. here's our jet stream. normally the jet would be like a river and take us straight out to sea. that is not happening with hermine. it will sit in this pocket and pound the surf like a nor'easter. we will see beach erosion. dangerous conditions through coastal maryland, coastal va. particularly the skwrer is seu is jersey shore i'm concerned about. two to four feet above high tide from north carolina/virginia border to connecticut. a little bit less as you head to

new england. keep in mind parts of in the case under a tropical storm watch. some of the heaviest rain we're expecting is in south carolina. less of a risk for rain for new york and new jersey but more of a risk for that flooding i mentioned. so the tropical storm warning persists up into new jersey. the watch extends to rhode island. notice the long island sound also in the mix. it acts as a funneling zone where we will potentially see it all the way into the bronx. here's our storm pushing to the north, northeast. a big coastal flood maker. that's what i want to emphasize the most. if you live on the shore, make sure you have your storm plans in place. this will be a dangerous, long-lasting storm. >> bonnie, certainly not the labor day weekend we had hoped for. now to politics as the day's big other headlines.

three hours from now, donald trump will visit a black church. he will sit down for an interview that will air at a later date. it is unclear how and when he will deliver remarks to the congregati congregation. here's what he said about his efforts to court black voters. >> we met with numerous african-american folks from the area and are having a tremendously hard time. and we will make things so good. we're going to get rid of the crime. we're going to help with the schools. we're going to bring back jobs into this country. it is is disgraceful what's happened with the african-american community. >> one of trump's outspoken supporters is under fire for

falsifying claims in his bio. >> did you make that claim that you graduated from -- >> it is is not fair -- this is not fair at all. this is not what we thought we were doing a profile. and you're here to destroy my character. >> these are claims that were made on your website that was live when you were speaking at the republican national convention. my question is are those claims accurate? >> pastor burns related a statement to being untruthful. he believes race is a factor for the scrutiny he is facing. i remember a blackman supporting donald trump for president. for too long african-american votes have been taken for granted by democratic politicians and enough is enough. meanwhile, the clinton campaign facing new scrutiny over the private e-mail server. the fbi red part of its interview her, which was conducted in july.

she said she didn't understand that the letter c stood for classify. clinton and tim kaine are off the campaign trail today. gary johnson and his running mate will hold a rally in des moines, iowa. as donald trump visits detroit, mike pence will be tailgating at ohio state university. msnbc's tremaine lee is with us this morning. what are you hearing from detroit residents about trump's pending visit? good morning, dara. i spent the past few days talking to black voters in detroit. they are not buying what donald trump is selling. they have seen him go from white audience to white audience making a false overture for their vote. when he says your schools are no good, your communities are no good, you're getting shot in the streets, they feel they are reduced to pathology. he he should come down to the ground and speak with them.

they struggle but they are also thriving. let's take listen to exactly what they had to say. >> what scares me about donald trump when you talk about 11 million people and we don't know how they got it, then it's going to be blacks, gays. when i start looking at his receipt particular, it's scary to me. there's no sense of consistency. he he changes on a dime. >> the whole black experience that largely, grossly is distorted. there's more to us than what happens on the streets. there's much more. we're creative. we're loving. >> detroit just came out of bankruptcy. he doesn't want to see even when

we were in bankruptcy, neighborhoods were still thriving he wants to see that bad picture. >> dara, certainly there are not a bunch of trump supporters here in detroit. but they still want to be heard. if you want honest effort, come down to the ground. behind me at great faith ministries, there is speculation whether donald trump will speak the a black audience, which is concerning. coming to the blackest city in the country is and trying too engage black voters. hillary clinton is off the campaign trail but still in the headlines after the fbi released its notes about her e-mail practices while secretary of state. let's bring in political correspondent casey hunt. how is the clinton campaign responding to this new development. >> good morning. this is another difficult dump of information for the clinton

campaign. >> there are a few details about how hillary clinton dealt with her private e-mail server. she said she didn't understand necessarily some of the classification procedures, that she wasn't briefed on it. the fbi found 17,000 e-mails that had not been turn theed over to the state department. she said she didn't know what that letter c that marked classified in the e-mails. and colin powell, who of course has come into this conversation, told her to be very careful in how she used the e-mails. this came out the friday before labor day weekend, when a lot of americans are on vacation. but it didn't take donald trump long to seize on what had happened. take a look. >> but when you look at what they have done where she didn't know what the letter c was, that's a lie.

unless she's not an intelligent person, that's a total lie. and then you look at some of the other things she did with all the different devices and everything else. she put you and me and everybody in this country in great danger. >> and there's potentially more to come over the next couple of months. the state department says they will release all of her schedules from the time she was secretary of state. you may recall there was news who she had met with, whether there are any ties to the clinton foundation. we will see more of that. and republicans not expected to stop letting this be an issue. >> will this finally be the e-mail story to bed for clinton, or do you think we will see more talk about this leading up to the election? >> well i think there's going to be new information released between now and the election, as we were just talking about. and this is something that has continued to be a problem for her. it ties into broader

transparently questions. she has not talked in a formal press conference setting in quite some time. i think you can expect more questions about this going forward. breaking news overnight, president obama says the u.s. and china have made a deal to sign on to the paris climate change agreement ahead of the g20 summit. >> this is the single best chance that we have to deal a problem that could end up transforming this planet in a way that makes it very difficult for us to deal with all the other challenges we have. >> ron allen joins me live from china. already a busy morning. can you put into perspective how big this is with respect to fighting climate change. >> reporter: well, you heard the president's remarks. he also said that some day we may look back on this day and say this is the day we saved the

planet. that's how urgent this problem is in president obama's mind. that's how determined he has been to get this paris climate deal done. it involves dozens of nations. the united states signed on and china, the two biggest polluters in the world. they account for 38%, 40% of carbon emissions in the world. for them to sign on this framework to reduce emissions around the world, it's a good thing. they are essentially saying if we can do this, other nations around the world can follow us and make this thing real. now, paris is not a -- not an enforcement document. it's not a legally binding contract or document. it basically sets out goals to reduce carbon emissions. it is is couple bent on taking

tors to reduce emissions in the country. the obama admission tried to get the epa to enforce new rules on emissions from coal-fired power plants around the country. it caused a huge uproar. it involves 29 states. it has gone all the way to the supreme court. that gives you some indication how divitt will be to actually enforce these provisions and these ideas. but to say dozens of nations have agreed to this now is significant. and, again, it's incumbent on the nations involved in it to make it work. we will see what happens going forward in america. hillary clinton supports this enthusiastically. donald trump said he would cancel can it immediately. >> ron allen traveling with the president in china. thank you, ron. breaking news. tracking tropical storm hermine. it could get more dangerous as

what's it like out there now? >> it is miserable. winds blowing 45 miles per hour, dara. more than 30,000 customers in this area have already lost some electricity. it will be some time before they get it back. meantime, to the south of here on hatteras island, north carolina, it's suspected that a tornado touched down. it hit a mobile home park, picked up two mobile homes with residents inside. they have now been taken to the hospital with injuries. along the atlantic coast this morning, it's all about getting ready. in new jersey, and as far as cape cod. >> we're putting extra lines on the boat and stuff like that. some of the guys are moving their boats up to a cove where it's a little bit safer. >> reporter: hermine roared ashore in the florida panhandle as a category 1 history. then crossed over land to

georgia and the two carolina. >> whoa, we are going to lose some. >> reporter: a quarter million customers lost power, trees came down, streets flooded. it is a sign of what could come later today. now back over the atlantic where waters are seven degrees warmer than usual, hermine could become a hurricane again. a threat up the coast as far as maine. >> storms downgraded. people say, well, maybe it's a little safer to go. it's still going to be a storm. it will still create tidal surge and rough water out in the ocean. >> a word of warning, don't ignore mother nature. >> my husband just walked out and came back in the house. just thank god that he didn't get hit. >> reporter: now, in florida, a tree branch fell and actually

killed somebody. that's why the authorities here are encouraging people to limit their time outside. preferably not to drive, especially in conditions like this. the tents were set up for the heritage musical festival, now canceled. people are once again running in the -- i've got to say, my sister is a marathoner. running is a dedication. right now i think it's a little crazy to be running out here. fortunately, they're in a group. if somebody does get injured, others can help. there will be a storm surge at 11:00. it will be close to what they experienced during hurricane sandy. so there will be serious flooding too. >> kerry, we are monitoring the situation. we will be checking back with you later. stay safe. >> turning back to politics and donald trump. he's ramping up his minority outreach. today he is in detroit. that's where he will attend a

black church is service and ask questions from the pastor. jacob rascon is in detroit. can you talk us through today's schedule and what the campaign is hoping will come out of this? >> so this of course comes after weeks of criticism that he is taking his pitch to largely white audiences. now he will be here at great faith ministries international. the service begins at 11:00. he is said to be coming with ben carson, a surrogate. after that service, there is said to be an interview between trump and the pastor here, shown on the pastor's tv network. after that, a tour around town with ben carson. the visit not without controversy. this all as hillary clinton is under fire again for her e-mails. and some polls showing trump actually catching up. donald trump has a lot to prove in detroit. his support among black vote issers almost nonexistent.

a few hours courting african-american voters. hillary clinton facing new questions after the fbi released papers on its investigation into her private e-mail server. joining me now is jonathan allen, author of hillary clinton's bio"hrc." thank you both for joining me. jonathan, let me start with you. key notes from the fbi release. what is your biggest takeaway center this? >> my biggest takeaway is the fbi did a very thorough investigation of hillary clinton before they decided not to recommend prosecuting her. it should not be surprising when you go through the notes you find little details that are interesting but nothing earth shattering. >> kevin is this helping the clinton camp buy some more time, or do you think these questions will have faded by election day? because there's nothing more we know coming out of this, right? >> no. i don't think these questions are going away any time soon for

the clintons. i think should she give an interview, a more public interview, she will face a lot of questions on this. look, the bottom line is we are weeks away from the first presidential debate, which we all know she is carefully preparing for. but donald trump is going to hammer her on this issue alone. i've been covering him since the beginning of the campaign. this has been a common theme for him on the campaign trail. it hits to her trustworthy numbers. >> we heard from president putin's on russia's alleged role in the hacking. >> translator: it doesn't matter who hacked this data. the important thing is the content given to the public.

>> jonathan, what's your reaction? >> well, i think the important words there are on a state level. vladimir putin is saying the russian government didn't hack into the dnc. that doesn't mean other people affiliated with the russian government didn't. it's not particularly revalatory. i don't know how much you can believe. >> kevin, what do you think donald trump's advisers are going to hope comes out of? >> no gaffes. yesterday we were in philadelphia in the inner-city.

look, the trump campaign says they're willing to take the message anywhere, whether mexico or the inner-city. but, again, you've got to look at the poll numbers he is still significantly lagging behind hillary clinton though the polls are now tightening labor day. but clearly the clinton campaign is going to hammer him on his previous controversial statements. so look again for him to try to put forward a message without any gaffes. >> and speaking is of high numbers, hillary clinton has now raised $143 million. that was last month. if you put that in context the, where can we expect to see that money go? kevin? >> you know, i think that they are going to try to be on the air with advise and also with social and digital buys. we're heading into labor day. this is a reset, if you will, dara, between when folks's kids

are back in school and folks are paying attention to the presidential race. you know, there has been some question about where is all that money going to go and whether it is going to be utilized. they say this is an untraditional campaign for an untraditional candidate. >> you talk about the ad buys. is this a little too much too late? >> that's a great point. if you look at the polls, they are tightening. but i think the bottom line is what we are going to have to see from donald trump is an ability to stay on message to utilize a ground game. just the other day there had been questions about how strong that ground game is. but his sources tell me, hey, wait a minute, kev, he was able to defeat 16 other primary candidates. but of course republican establishment figures a little bit tepid because they feel they need to have that unified party in order to dethe feet the clinton machine. >> skwrpb than, one final

the winds are at 60 miles per hour. this is still a strong, powerful tropical storm. movements east-northeast at 21 miles per hour. normally in this situation we would say that's great. it's going to zip out of here. it's moving fast. that's not the track with hermine. that's what makes it so different than other storms. this storm is likely to become a hurricane next week. the models have been fluctuating. it will be sitting offshore for days. the jet stream is not catching the storm in time. imagine it is like a bus. unfortunately, they're going to miss the bus. so hermine just sits out there. because it's doing that, we have powerful winds from the northeast pounding the shoreline. heavy surf and dangerous flooding as we go through the next few days, especially monday

detroit, a major and important city that has a large african-american population and just answer some scripted questions doesn't sound to me like the kind of dialogue that african-americans are going to respect. so far we haven't been talked to in a way that we like by donald trump. he talks as if we all have the same situation. all black people are poor. all black people live in neighborhoods where they're afraid they're going to get shot. all black people are out of work. nobody who is african-american likes to be characterized that way or talked to that way. so far what he said doesn't have the sound of serious courting. and going to a church today in detroit, everyone with ben carson at his side doesn't necessarily sound like the beginning of a real dialogue between donald trump and the black community. >> joe, what message key deliver to move the needle among african-american voters?

>> i don't know if there's any message he could deliver. i suppose it's who you meet with. if he met with african-american leaders, the head of the naacp, head of the urban league. he missed opportunities the last few months to go to some important conventions that are hosted by and large african-american organizations with a lot of credibility in our community. and if you want to start dialogue, it would have been good for him to have gone to the conventions or said representatives of those conventions and to begin the dialogue of saying what he might do if he were elected president of the united states. the same thing is true when he visited some cities where we have incidents where african-american men have been killed by police officers. he had a chance to go to the cities and meet with leadership, black leadership to talk about how those problems might be addressed. he didn't do that.

he hasn't gone to african-american radio or tv stations to get the message out. it takes money, time, effort, and reaching out and dialogue for leadership. >> i want to talk to you about this. there are talking points about this church visit. before we get into the content of the, what is your opinion on the leak. >> somebody leaked it. it contains things that like who is there who to acknowledge from the podium, things you should say. this interview is designed to make trump look good, not bad. so they gave the questions in advance. this isn't a journalist. that's okay.

they got the questions in advance. they wrote the answers. and that's okay. he can read through the answers and be prepared and have his talking points. to get them to listen to you, you have to have a relationship, build trust. that takes time. you can't just go to a city, a church in one day and expect to somehow win over votes is. it's not going to work. it takes time. it takes courting, trust. and he doesn't have that. and he's not likely to get it. >> this could be a pivotal moment for trump. is this going to help? is it going to make anything different? >> no. now that the story is out, it just looks disingenuous. in particular, for trump. i've seen it done before. it doesn't work well. you have someone read talking

points. it doesn't come off as authentic. people are looking for authenticity that the candidate does care about the community. and he offered virtually no indication that he does care about the community because he doesn't have a relationship with them. that takes time. >> how does this raise the level of skepticism for those in church? does this poison his visit, so to speak? >> it makes it difficult for folks to take him seriously. to show up, just as rick was saying, and then to maybe answer a few questions from the pastor on the christian broadcasting network a few weeks later is not dialogue. he has yet to do that.

to politics and donald trump, making up some ground in the latest national polls. he trailed by ten points last week. now that gap has closed to just one point but there's one group that could make the difference for the democratic nominee and that's young voters. let's bring in miguel from the harvard republican club who has just refused to endorse the republican nominee for the first time since 1888. miguel, this was historic. so what was the discussion in

your group before you decided not to back trump. >> we took a close look at donald trump's policies, what he said since the beginning of his campaign and we truly felt that donald trump did not reflect the actual values of the republican party. we think it's ridiculous that he's trying to somehow divide this country and use that as a mechanism to propel himself to the white house. and so, yes, we made the controversial but difficult decision to not endorse the party's nominee. but we did that because we thought it was the right thing to do. and at the end of the day what i tell people is our organization chose to put the country before the party, and we stand by that decision 100%. >> and what do you say to your counterparts at the yale republican club, because they did endorse trump? >> so obviously it's not in the harvard republicans role to tell

other chapters what to do, but i think it's sad that the yale college republican club did not really take into account the feelings of its members. we saw that with strong dissent following the decision. i know the club has since broken up and there were a lot of resignations from leadership and from membership. and so i think it's important and we're seeing it across the country that chapters look closely at what donald trump said and truly make that difficult decision. we saw cornell republicans endorse gary johnson a couple days back. duke has also withheld an endorsement so it's not a strange thing. we're seeing this dissatisfaction with the nominee all over the place. >> miguel, where are your club members going to go. you just mentioned johnson, but are they going to go vote for hillary clinton? >> it's hard to say. we have some members who are supporting donald trump, we have some members supporting gary johnson and we have some members
