obama's attending his final g20 summit. and get news he met with russian president slat mir putin this morning. the discussion came as tensions between the u.s. and russia reached some new heights. as president obama prepares for a press conference set to take place in just a couple of hours, as well, joining us from china is nbc's ron allen on the road with the president. ron, good day to you. or rather afternoon. anything you can tell us about the president's pull aside with putin? >> well, richard, it was a constructive meeting. u.s. officials are saying it lasted about 90 minutes, a bit longer than expected. but the bottom line is there was no concrete deal, no concrete agreement on syria, and that was the main topic of conversation. there have been frantic efforts here the past couple of days by staff to try and put this meeting together. it wasn't scheduled for the agenda. this is an economic summit and this was a meeting for informally on the sidelines as it's called. the president said that he approached this whole topic with some skepticism because there

are been so many cessations of hostilities agreements in syria or attempts to broker them that have faltered. there's a -- there's not a lot of goodwill between the president, and vladimir putin but of course the president said he had to give this a try. he's very concerned about the humanitarian situation in syria deteriorating. they also talked about cybersecurity, and the allegations that the russians have been hacking into the dnc, and to some state voter rolls of late. so a long agenda. richard? >> ron, you are not done on the road there. you'll be, of course, watching the president as he has a first on his next stop, this as accomplishing some things there in china such as the issue related to climate change, and the issue of brexit. he had also discussion with the prime minister of britain. >> he did. those meetings went well, they say. and from here the president's

of 40, 50 miles per hour. hopefully not too many power outages. wind forecast, light this morning as we go throughout the evening hours. that's when it picks up a little bit. these purples and pinks, 40 to 50-mile-per-hour winds. very close to southern new england. and that will be right near areas of eastern long island and southern new england late tonight through tomorrow morning. then the storm gets much weaker after that. so things will begin to improve. so far as the forecast goes today, again, obviously new england's being lashed. and also some thunderstorm down along the golf coast. well, how about this story? do you brief bleu cheese or ranch? professional eaters faced off in the 15th annual national chicken wing festival, where else, buffalo, new york? joey chestnut won for the third straight year eating 188 wings in 12 minutes. give that guy a little bit of antacid and congratulations. msnbc live back in two.

going to laos. he will be the first american president, sitting president, to visit that country. that figured so prominently in the vietnam war. laos has been called the most heavily bombarded, bombed country on earth. a small country where the united states dropped a significant amount of munitions during the war. and that's a big issue now, because there's a significant amount of unexploded ordnance there that the laotian government wants to see removed. and it's a very small number where that has happened. laos is part of an association of southeast asian nations. that's why the president is going there to attend some regional summits. but that issue of unexploded ordnance is going to figure prominently. >> the president will be making remarks in the 6:00 a.m. eastern hour. we'll be having that for you right here on msnbc. nbc's ron allen with the president there in hangzhou, china, 5:00 in the afternoon. thank you, ron. today, lane would have turned 3 years old. but we celebrate his first

the weapon discharged sending a bullet through his hand. he's now recovering at a local hospital. all right just ahead, the latest on the escape of a murder suspect from a police interrogation room. but first nbc meteorologist bill karins has your labor day forecast. not what to talk about? >> thankfully, hermine as we went into the weekend was expected to be a big, huge storm and it is a huge storm but it's further off the coast than was expected going into the holiday weekend. we're mostly now just concerned with southeastern new england especially. still have 70-mile-per-hour winds off the coast. very heavy rain bands may try to rotate into cape cod during the day today. the new forecast path out by the hurricane center takes the storm actually towards the northeast, and conditions will be the worst during the day today. but notice the storm weakens as we go throughout wednesday and thursday. so even though the storm gets closer it will be a much weaker storm so won't have the impact. still have tropical storm warnings from long island through connecticut, rhode island, martha's vineyard, nantucket and cape cod. could be some wind gusts upwards of 40, 50 miles per hour.

hopefully not too many power outages. wind forecast, light this morning as we go throughout the evening hours. that's when it picks up a little bit. these purples and pinks, 40 to 50-mile-per-hour winds. very close to southern new england. and that will be right near areas of eastern long island and southern new england late tonight through tomorrow morning. then the storm gets much weaker after that. so things will begin to improve. so far as the forecast goes today, again, obviously new england's being lashed. and also some thunderstorm down along the golf coast. well, how about this story? do you brief bleu cheese or ranch? professional eaters faced off in the 15th annual national chicken wing festival, where else, buffalo, new york? defending champion joey chestnut won for the third straight year eating 188 wings in 12 minutes. down from the 205 he ate last year. give that guy a little bit of antacid and congratulations. msnbc live back in two.
