coast. the post tropical cyclone is churning in the atlantic and forecasters say it's picking up strength. hermine is not likely to make landfall again but strong storm surges and dangerous currents remain a threat from virginia to massachusetts. it's even prompted new york city to shut down its beaches today. cruise liners also taking extra precaution. bringing their ships back to port early. hermine is responsible so far for two deaths. widespread damage and causing hundreds of thousands to lose power over the life of the storm. let's move now to the race for the white house. it's tightening with just 21 days until the first presidential debate. donald trump, though here, continues to lose members of his own party along the way. >> i would not vote for hillary clinton, and as of now i would still not vote for donald trump. i just know that i would like to vote fordom, it's not comfortable to not support your nominee, but given the positions he's taken, and the tone and tenor of his campaign, i simply can't. >> trump responded to arizona senator jeff flake's nonendorsement in several tweets

calling him weak and ineffective. while trump's opponents from hillary clinton to long shot candidate evan mcmullin responded by pointing to trump's temperame temperament. it came up as trump continued his attempt to win over minority voters with his first visit to a black church in detroit this weekend and then with his vice presidential pick mike pence adamantly saying that campaign's immigration policy has remained the same despite widespread criticism. >> begins with building a wall, border security. it begins with enforcing the laws of this country. and he's been completely consistent on this point. >> no he -- no he's not. he had deportation force -- >> center of the national debate. >> but he's not been consistent on this issue with what to do with the 11 million to 15 million. >> well, but, but there are people in different circumstances, in that category. there are people who are criminal aliens in this country. and i think everyone in this country understands. >> then on taxes pence promised to release his own in the coming

sanders, they're hitting a number of states new hampshire, michigan, illinois, and then of course ohio and pennsylvania, two of the biggest battleground states out there as you noted richard this is going to be the first time in more than a week that we've seen hillary clinton campaigning. she's been out there doing a lot of fund-raisers but in terms of public events she hasn't been out there for several days. so we'll see that today, if they try to catch up. her numbers have been dropping but donald trump's numbers interestingly have not been gaining. a lot of that going to third party and other candidates. >> tracie potts in washington, d.c. thank you, tracie. of course we'll have more on the election later on in the show. coming up on wednesday, nbc news along with iraq and afghanistan veterans of america will host hillary clinton and donald trump for a live televised prime-time forum. this is a first. it will focus exclusively on issues the next president will have to confront. as commander in chief wednesday 8:00 p.m. eastern on nbc and msnbc hosted by matt lauer. now to china where president

obama's attending his final g20 summit. and get news he met with russian president slat mir putin this morning. the discussion came as tensions between the u.s. and russia reached some new heights. as president obama prepares for a press conference set to take place in just a couple of hours, as well, joining us from china is nbc's ron allen on the road with the president. ron, good day to you. or rather afternoon. anything you can tell us about the president's pull aside with putin? >> well, richard, it was a constructive meeting. u.s. officials are saying it lasted about 90 minutes, a bit longer than expected. but the bottom line is there was no concrete deal, no concrete agreement on syria, and that was the main topic of conversation. there have been frantic efforts here the past couple of days by staff to try and put this meeting together. it wasn't scheduled for the agenda. this is an economic summit and this was a meeting for informally on the sidelines as it's called. the president said that he approached this whole topic with some skepticism because there

are been so many cessations of hostilities agreements in syria or attempts to broker them that have faltered. there's a -- there's not a lot of goodwill between the president, and vladimir putin but of course the president said he had to give this a try. he's very concerned about the humanitarian situation in syria deteriorating. they also talked about cybersecurity, and the allegations that the russians have been hacking into the dnc, and to some state voter rolls of late. so a long agenda. richard? >> ron, you are not done on the road there. you'll be, of course, watching the president as he has a first on his next stop, this as accomplishing some things there in china such as the issue related to climate change, and the issue of brexit. he had also discussion with the prime minister of britain. >> he did. those meetings went well, they say. and from here the president's

going to laos. he will be the first american president, sitting president, to visit that country. that figured so prominently in the vietnam war. laos has been called the most heavily bombarded, bombed country on earth. a small country where the united states dropped a significant amount of munitions during the war. and that's a big issue now, because there's a significant amount of unexploded ordnance there that the looaotian government wants to see removed. the president is going there to attend some regional summits but that issue of unexploded ordnance is going to figure prominently. >> the president will be making remarks in the 6:00 a.m. eastern hour. we'll be having that for you right here on msnbc. nbc's ron allen with the president there in hangzhou, china, 5:00 in the afternoon. thank you, ron. today, lane would have turned 3 years old. but we celebrate his first

birthday in heaven with the community that has surrounded us with love and support. >> anyone that knows me knows i don't like to speak, but my baby, i owe it to him to honor him, so, his mommy needed to say, happy birthday laney. you're in our hearts today, and every second of every other day. >> heartbreaking words as you see there, as the parents of this young boy speak publicly for the first time since his tragic death. lane was just 2 years old when he was attacked, and killed by an alligator at florida's walt disney world resort back in june. since that accident, his parents have started a foundation in his honor. family, friends and strangers gathered to celebrate what would have been lane's third birthday. they were asked to dress in blue. that was his favorite color. lane's father reflected on how the family were handling that heartbreak. >> we often speak about how lucky we were to have spent 2 years, 9 months and 11 days as a complete family.

he went to grab his phone when he thought he heard it ring only he accidentally grabbed his gun. the weapon discharged sending a bullet through his hand. he's now recovering at a local hospital. all right just ahead, the latest on the escape of a murder suspect from a police interrogation room. but first nbc meteorologist bill karins has your labor day forecast. not what to talk about? >> thankfully, hermine as we went into the weeksened was expected to be a big, huge storm and it is a huge storm but it's further off the coast than was expected going into the holiday weekend. we're mostly now just concerned with southeastern new england especially. still have 70-mile-per-hour winds off the coast. very heavy rain bands may try to rotate into cape cod during the day today. the new forecast path out by the hurricane center takes the storm actually towards the northeast, and conditions will be the worst during the day today. but notice the storm weakens as we go throughout wednesday and thursday. so even though the storm gets closer it will be a much weaker storm so won't have the impact. still have tropical storm warnings from long island through connecticut, rhode island, martha's vineyard, nantucket and cape cod. could be some wind gusts upwards

of 40, 50 miles per hour. hopefully not too many power outages. wind forecast, light this morning as we go throughout the evening hours. that's when it picks up a little bit. these purples and pinks, 40 to 50-mile-per-hour winds. very close to southern new england. and that will be right near areas of eastern long island and southern new england late tonight through tomorrow morning. then the storm gets much weaker after that. so things will begin to improve. so far as the forecast goes today, again, obviously new england's being lashed. and also some thunderstorm down along the golf coast. well, how about this story? do you brief bleu cheese or ranch? professional eaters faced off in the 15th annual national chicken wing festival, where else, buffalo, new york? joey chestnut won for the third straight year eating 188 wings in 12 minutes. give that guy a little bit of antacid and congratulations. msnbc live back in two.

at this scene out of london. it represents the 1666 fire that set the city up in flames, and surprisingly less than ten people died from that fire at the time. many homes were completely destroyed. and while it might be a strange event to celebrate londoners gathered around the river thames to commemorate the event from 350 years ago. any reason to celebrate. it was on this very day in 1997 that mother teresa died. but on sunday pope francis canonized saint teresa of calcutta. in front of more than 120,000 faithful at the vatican. nbc was there for that. we're joined live from the vatican right now. and what an auspicious moment for so many who loved mother teresa here. >> well, richard the celebration for mother teresa's elevation to sainthood started yesterday morning and they're still continuing. i don't know whether you can hear it but there is a thanksgiving mass being held right now behind me in st. peter's square, being held by

the secretary of state peay ato. it is marking the first feast day of saint teresa of calcutta. the new feast day on the catholic calendar now will be celebrated every 5th of september from now on. now, not too many people in the square right now, these are working on monday. but yesterday there were 120,000 people from all over the world, including the u.s., packing up st. peter's square and the surrounding areas around the vatican. they came here to see pope francis recognize what they believed for decades now, that saint -- well mother teresa, is a saint now. but she has been a saint even when she was alive decades before her death 19 years to this day. 19 years ago to this day, richard. >> so many folks watching that happen and great to hear the news. she now one of what some 780 women that have been canonized and claudio, over the course of all those centuries, just 10,000 total so she's a very rare saint, if you will. >> right. >> thank you so much, live for

us from vatican. a protest of a four-state, $3.8 billion oil pipeline turned violent over the weekend after several hundred protesters in north dakota confronted construction crews for destroying american indian burial and cultural sites. demonstrators supporting the standing rock sioux tribe faced off with private security officers who used dogs and pepper spray. over 30 people were injured there. the incident comes after hundreds of native americans from tribes across the country set up camp near a construction site to protest the dakota access pipeline. the university lecturer who gained national attention, you might remember this, after video footage of her assaulting a student journalist went viral, well she has landed a new job. >> you need to get out! >> i actually don't. >> all right. >> melissa click was fired after that interference with a journalist during student protests nearly one year ago. the former university of missouri professor has landed a one-year lecturing position at
