h hermine's havoc, imagine being on a cruz. we are tracking it all. of course this morning we have got to begin with president obama and china holding a press kon conference. front and center was his meeting, an unblaned meeting with putinand the leaders inability to get on the same page when it comes to syria and ukraine. >> given the gaps of trust that exist, that's a tough negotiation. >> nbc joins me now. first of all, nice haircut, high and tight. >> i won't comment on your hair. it would be inappropriate. too early this morning. >> all right.
6:01 am
how about his -- >> this is a an opportunity for world leaders to come together, have conversations. i think the most important thing in terms of syria is the extent to which they checked each other's stat tuts. 90 minute conversation, the redoubts we are getting is that there is no deal yet on syria. they have been acknowledging that. they are sending the diplomats, sending the deputies for mr. putin. sending them back to figure out some sort of cease fire. what we have seen over the last couple of weeks is that we dead have some that was rapidly unraveling. a lot of suffering on the ground now. that's really the focus there. when the president is on foreign shores he is always in danger of
6:02 am
being called back into some sort of domestic controversy. the president very clearly supporting the right to protest saying he has a constitutional right. he seems to be supporting the idea that it will start and heighten the conversation we are having on race in this country. >> thanks. i want to focus on politics though. we have to talk about the race, labor day. we know it marks the unofficial end of summer but it is when the race for the white house officially heats up leading to the first presidential debate which is three weeks from today. this brings hillary clinton officially back to the campaign trail. we have all of the angles covered from both campaigns. we'll begin with kristen welker. it is tough for us to say she hasn't been on the campaign
6:03 am
trail. she has been on this fundraising blitz. $140 million doesn't raise itself but what is she going focus on now? >> reporter: one described this as a final sprint. this is in clear focus today. take a look at what we are going to see today. she will be here and then former dem krapt bill -- bernie sanders will have his first campaign. that will be in new hafrp sthier. of course that's a state he bounced her in the primary. this all comes as there are new questions about clinton using her private e-mail server.
6:04 am
she try to turn page today and later on she'll try to put the focus back on her campaign. >> can she turn it around while she is at rally after rally. those rallies are cheerleading events. does she need to hold a press conference and sit there and answer every last question about her e-mails and the foundation? the issue doesn't seem to want to go away. >> reporter: they tell me a press conference is coming soon. here is what's happening. secretary clinton will be flying with her press corp. we have a live look at her plane right now in westchester new york. it will head here to cleveland in a short time. we are hoping that that plane will give us a whole lot more
6:05 am
access to secretary clinton. we will certainly try to get a lot more questions to her. to your point, what we are seeing is a narrowing of these polls. take a look at one of the most recent polls. tech te secretary clinton leads in the polls. no doubt there will be more pressure on her to answer questions. >> why is it significant she is flying with her press corp.? donald trump isn't? >> reporter: i think donald trump has from time to time but this sort of marks the final stretch of the campaign, to some extent coming later on in the season. but the reason why it is significant is because it gives potential for more day-to-day interaction, to ask her a question off the cuff. we are hoping it will mean more
6:06 am
access and more answers to our questions. >> thanks so much for gjoinings. the donald trump will be in ohio chatting it up with union members. katy tur has more. >> reporter: good morning. donald trump is expected to spend his labor day in ohio today with mike pence visiting a round table in cleveland and a town in ohio. visiting a detroit church on saturday. it is as the script for a question and answer session for that pastor was leaked to the press. after it was leaked the campaign allowed it'scandidate. he was also supposed to do a walking tour.
6:07 am
instead of that he spent about five minutes infront of ben carson's home. this is the final stretch right now. they have to figure out a way to reach out to african americans and gain more support. we are doing work in the battleground states. they will have to find a way to expand their base. all right. we have break news taking place in israel. two people killed and more than a dozen injured after a building collapse in tel aviv. the cause is still unknown. we'll bring you the latest as it happens. >> coming up, hermine has moved out but the danger for the oes kooes is not a danger.
6:08 am
the editor will join many to explain why he is the most capable candidate oning year. >> hillary clinton and donald trump, a live forum that's wednesday, 8:00 p.m. eastern on nbc and msnbc. and then, in one g blink of an eye, their tree had given its last. but with their raymond james financial advisor, they had prepared for even the unthinkable.

no longer a hurricane hermine is churning off of the atlantic coast. for thousands it still means dangerous rip currents and possible flooding from a storm that left two dead and knocked out power to thousands down south. we have it all covered on the coast right here in new york and new jersey and a look at the week ahead. i want to take you live to gabe. i'm looking at the waves behind you, no surprise no one is allowed in the water. what's it really like for residents? >> hi there. good morning. vacationers here to eastern long island. some are trying to make the best of it. as you can see behind me, the dangerous rip currents are here. tropical storm warning is in effect. fishermen can't stay away. other people have gathered here
6:13 am
on the beach to try to make the best of this labor day. we have been tracking this storm for dwiet a while. we were there as it made land fall on friday in florida. the coast, georgia, carolinas and up the east coast. the economic impact will be quit a bit. we are in ocean city, maryland. they are really expecting more people on this labor day. here in eastern long island there were some hotel cancellations. again, the people here, they have trying to make the best of it. they expect the lids to be quite a bit more. tropical storm warning still in effect and the cape and massachusetts and thank fi we are not getting any rain. >> was there any flooding at all
6:14 am
in if. >> no. there we >> reporter: no. there were concerns of flooding over the weekend. no major reports of any gladding. in florida there were some issues after all of the rainfall from late last week. there was some flooding. hermine is a stur born sthoorm won't go away. sit several hundred miles off the coast. >> thanks. i want to take you along the does line. this is new jersey. morgan, clearly the rip currents behind you dangerous. we did see a few surfers. that's not the case where you are. >> reporter: no surfers here. this labor day weekend, a lot of beach goers hoping to get in this weather.
6:15 am
new york beaches are still closed. you can see the red flags. it means you can look but you can't touch. you can't get in this water because the rip tides are too strong. there is a coastal flooding advisory in effect. the residents who i spoke to said look, we are still devastates by super storm sandy which happened in 2012. they say it really left an impact. they are zd to keep building up and wg. they also told me they finding out when they can get in the water. >> she is tacking unpredictable
6:16 am
movement. >> we did not get fedding. we did not get rain. so many people are so scared because we have just a few as hurricane dandy. >> you saw the worst thing that's happening now. >> a couple of feet of sbaech being taken. it naturally gets replenished too. it's not like you'll have to wring a lot of splungs. we were never expecting that but we are watching some of that rain kick through. it will be spauly. it is still about 600 miles wide but this shows you the position of a storm. instead of being here, which is
6:17 am
expect where it was expected to be. it will drift ever so slowly. so the worst effects are what you're seeing during the day today. it's not all that bad. it is hard for all of the businesses that make money at the beach. still have tropical storm warnings in effect. a little bit of a glancing blow the next two days. >> and you said david said in some areas of the beach business joane owners said they lost 80%. >> at least. >> and all it was was wind y. how is it that the meteorologist got this so wrong? >> the average forecast there for the national hurricane center, three days out the average air is 150.
6:18 am
so here is the position of the storm right now this morning. if you're talking about 10. so. >> just that shift of 50 to 55 rel pli imfacts. what if we it had been miles instead of to the east but with klg aly l wiggle wochlt. >> unit would be interesting.

welcome back. donald trump says he can succeed where democratics have failed. with just two months before election day he does not have much time to make the case and his poll numbers don't look good especially for the african american community. barry jo barry jackson is a member of trump's evangelical advisory board. also with me nina turner.
6:23 am
bishop, let's start with you. >> yes. >> it feels like this african american outreach just started a couple of weeks ago. he didn't seem to make much headway this weekend. what's the plan? >> education has improved black communities. jobs have to come to the neighborhood and nonviolent offenders need to recapture their lives. if he focuses on the beef and making that case i believe that we can see substantive change in this whole election process. >> you think they can see some sort of change? >> i'm not sure about that. one date doesn't mean you have sealed the deal.
6:24 am
both sides, both parties have to engage in a deeper way and that is beyond just election cycles. you know democrats got handed in 2014. he cannot look at it as something we just wait for the next presidential election. democrats who enjoy a larger portion is really about having a 50 state strategy and about engaging other voters of color every single election cycle. >> nina, i want to stay on that. i want to share with you what p. diddy shared yesterday. >> you get in return the things you care about for your community. i think we got a little bit
6:25 am
short-changed. >> diddy is saying he shortchanged the african american communities. >> i think p. diddy said that he worked very hard and i have heard that. because he is african american is t pressure was more heavy on him. i have heard that about the positioning wean the democratic party. there is nothing so far i have heard from mr. trump or republicans that are remotely in tune or in line with what the african american community needs. we have to get tauf talking points and people have to get down to business to talk to that is right of the matter. the heart of the matter is income and wealth equality is by and large one of the biggest in the country, that the likelihood that they are born poor that they will die poor.
6:26 am
it has been republicans that have been messing with the voting access over some fraud that doesn't happen in person voting. we have to do something about that. you have to have in the united states of america open opportunity for everybody to vote. the criminal justice reform, all of those things are vitally important and speaking to our millennial sisters and brothers do not feel their voices are being heard in a strong and deep way. i believe that the democratic party has the best options and opportunity frs our community. >> if they don't feel their voices are being heard, donald trump, many people were offended by it but he described the black experience as -- i just want to have the quote, poverty, rejection, no houses, no homes, no ownership, crimes at levels that knob has seen.
6:27 am
-- nobody has seen. >> in order to want change you have to recognize what you don't have. let's talk about jobs. we need jobs in urban areas, also we need businesses. under the current administration only 1.8% of the small business administration loans have been given to black businesses. there was about 8% way below the level it needs to be. we have to find a way to encourage businesses and the democratic party has failed in this effort. so we need an alternative. we need both parties to come after our vote. hillary clinton believes she deserves to get a pass and not
6:28 am

6:29 am
issues. all of those issues! are you going to vote for hillary? >> i am talking about the issues today. i'm going to continue to talk about the issues. people are caught up on who is voting for whom and too many people in this country are suffering and we have to hold all elected officials accou accountab accountable. i do have some agreement with the bishop in that all votes, every single voter should feel as though people are can go asking for their vote. that is what keeps people excited and energized. that's what the political revolution is all about. >> all right. thank you both for your energy, passion and commitment. >> all right. thanks. coming up, hillary clinton continues to struggle to explain her e-mails. she asked the team to make it all public.

you're watching msnbc. the editorial board of a prominent newspaper took a bold step this holiday weekend, reminding voters that hillary clinton and donald trump are not the only choices to fill the oval office. the richmond times dispatch formally endorsed libertarian candidate, gary johnson, and they're calling on the presidential debate commission to include johnson. joining me now, bart hinkel, deputy editor of the times dispatch editorial pages. good morning. thanks for joining me. >> good morning. nice to be here. >> gary johnson could be on track to garner a significant number of votes for a third-party candidate. 11% support in a recent poll. and yet he is still nowhere near striking distance of clinton and trump. why would you want to use up an endorsement on a candidate in that position? >> well, we looked at the field, and we've endorsed republicans
6:53 am
for at least since 1980. without fail. and this year, we looked at donald trump and concluded there was just no way that he would be acceptable in the oval office. and we looked at hillary clinton, and her long record, and her positions and concluded there was no way we would find her acceptable in the oval office. so we looked at gary johnson, and he's a two-term -- he was a two-term republican governor, he's got a good record, good positions on the issues, and we felt he was the best fit with our newspaper from a standpoint of political philosophy. and from a standpoint of individual character. >> what would happen -- i know how much you want him to have a seat, have a position at the debate. he's got to be at 15% to get that. if he were to participate in the debates, what do you think we would get out of it? >> well, i think we would get a far more substantive discussion of the issues. one of the things that we find appealing about gary johnson is that he is very much
6:54 am
issue-focused. he does not waste a lot of time making personal character attacks against his opponents. he's concerned about the welfare of the country. and the best way to improve it. >> all right. that might be smarter, better. but he's clearly not -- i shouldn't say clearly. it is so unlikely that he could be the next president. do you run the risk that by your paper supporting gary johnson, you could help one of the other candidates that you don't want to? i think about ralph nader and al gore and what that did. >> well, that's not really our concern. our concern is to look at the field of candidates and decide who is the best candidate in our view. and in our view, johnson is the best candidate. you do have the problem with third-party candidates having difficulty breaking through the two-party paradigm. and they sort of face a catch-22, in which, you know, they don't get any attention because nobody thinks they can win and nobody thinks they can win because they don't get any
6:55 am
attention. at some point, you have to break that cycle and say, look, here's a guy who deserves serious consideration. >> one of the ways he could break that is push himself into the new sickle. gary johnson has not gotten into a name-calling hate-filled twitter battle which has been front and center in this election cycle. is there a risk that taking the high road takes you off the course because he doesn't have a seat in the game here? >> well, i suppose that's theoretically possible. but if you look at the trajectory of his campaign, it's been going up steadily, and people find him very appealing. the more people learn about him, the more they are interested in supporting him. i saw somebody say recently that it's sort of like super-heated water. that there's a lot of latent support for johnson and libertarian ideas. and all that's necessary is some sort of catalyst to provoke that.
