detonation so far. saying, it was meant to counter what it calls u.s. hostility. the test comes in the wake of president obama's trip to asia, and on the 68th anniversary of north korea's creation. neighboring south korea detected a seismic event resembling an earthquake near a nuclear site in the northeastern part of their communist neighbor. the test was met with condemnation, including from north korea's longtime ally, china. the white house says the president spoke with south korea's president via phone on air force one overnight. let's get to lucy kafanov from london with a good day to you. what more are we hearing about this latest test by north korea? >> good morning, alex. a north korean state television screens this morning we saw a triumphant announcement claiming to have successfully tested a nuclear warhead. there is, of course, no way for us to verify this. but the based on the seismic reaction, the 5.3 magnitude pseudo quake, basically, it does indicate that this is certainly

the most biggest, the most powerful test so far. and it raises fears, of course, that kim jong-un's regime has made significant nuclear advances. what pyongyang has long been after is basically to make a nuclear warhead that is small enough to fit onto a long range missile that could one day strike the u.s. that is the great fear. they say they've done it this morning. of course we cannot confirm that. but certainly, a tremendous cause for concern. the diplomatic fallout has also been tremendous. international condemnation, not just from the united states, but south korea and japan, but also russia, and significantly china. north korea's only major ally. china did get on board those international sanctions the last time north korea did one of these nuclear tests back in january, a less powerful one. and the timing of the explosion is significant, also. 68th anniversary of the north korea's founding as a state. obama just left the region. it certainly does send a message and also raises concerns because there are already so many sanctions against this country,

what more leverage does the international community have to prevent north korea from acting out, from doing more? we simply don't know. but this is something that experts are saying we do need to take seriously indeed. >> oh, absolutely. okay, lucy kafanov, thank you so much. in the wake of the conventions, hillary clinton has seen wide margins in swing state polls begin to erode. let's start with the new quinnipiac poll. in florida, hillary clinton and donald trump dead even, 47-47 there. clinton and trump are completely flip-flopped when it comes to support among men and women voters there. then in pennsylvania, state where clinton has looked dominant, she is suffering from a five-point swing in trump's favor. and yet, still leads 48-43. in ohio, the numbers have also swung five points in trump's favor, and he now leads by one point though that is inside the margin of error. so when you add third party candidates to the mix, trump's lead gross to 4, and then look at third place libertarian gary johnson surging six points to 14%. one north carolina poll a suffolk university poll shows

that mistake now just ferring to aleppo as a quote, war-torn city. and not to nitpick but the paper also misidentified aleppo as the capital of syria when it's actually damascus. that correction has also been made. the vice presidential nominees are getting their first intelligence briefings while there is new controversy around donald trump's comments about the officials he met with. governor mike pence will get his first classified intelligence briefing in indiana today. a day after democratic senator tim kaine had his session in new york. but it is the republican nominee's briefing that is drawing attention. after he and adviser retired general michael flynn said intelligence officials expressed their dismay with the obama administration. >> our leadership, barack obama, did not follow what our experts and our truly when they call it intelligence, it's there for a reason, what our experts said to do. >> how -- >> and i was very, very surprised. in almost every instance, and i could tell i have pretty good with the body language i could tell they were not happy.

>> you were there, did you see that? >> yeah, i sure did. the intelligence we received in the last two briefings were in stark contrast to the policy decisions that are being made. >> that's you coming up with that deduction. in the briefing did they look and say something and then look at him like -- like this or this? >> they would say the intelligence professionals, as they should. they would say those are policy decisions. so donald trump in a very, very sophisticated way was asking tough questions, and they would back off and say that is not our job, those are policy decisions that the, in this case the white house, is making. and we would sit there and go, okay, we understand. >> but then reports emerged that friction within that meeting on the trump side. four sources with knowledge of the briefing told nbc news including two intelligence officials who spoke to people in the room, saying general flynn repeatedly interrupted the briefers until governor chris christie, who was also present, intervened. according to one source new jersey governor told flynn to calm down while another claims christie said shut up.

that high winds twisted some cables, stopped the cable cars from working. rescue workers had to go and join people in each of these cars overnight bringing them food and blankets, and of course plenty of reassurance, alex. >> yikes is all i got to say to that. glad they're down safely. let's turn to business and a record find for one of america's biggest banks accused of setting up 2 million secret accounts without customers' knowing anything about it. nancy hunger ford is joining us from london. how did this work, nancy? >> that is a very good question, alex. and as you just touched on, the bank is going to have to pay up for this. we're talking about a $185 million in total that wells fargo will have to pay. that includes the larkest fine on record coming from the consumer financial protection bureau and back to your question of how exactly this was carried out. well, we do know that the allegations included reports of creating fake e-mails, even fake p.i.n. numbers, and we're also talking about around 2 million

unauthorized accounts that were created, with the intent of hitting sales targets. so without a doubt a rather unsettling report for wells fargo customers. but we should point out that within this fine wells fargo has compensated any customers that may be affected. they are paying a penalty, and also more than 5,000 employees have been let go. so that is a story. it will be interesting to see whether or not the company comes out with a further response because we know that they did agree to settle. but they neither admitted or denied the allegations. alex, back to you. >> a big problem. nancy hungerford thank you so much. check on the weather now with bill karins. >> second to last summer weekend, alex. and it is going to feel like i mean today is just brutal in the east this time of year people kids at school and school buses things like that, not fun with the high humidity. but the fall chill is going to be in the midwest today, and it's going to spread across the country as we go throughout the weekend. so there is an end to this at least as the seasons do begin to change. today notice only 68 up in montana where we're going to feel like 102 in memphis.

this is one of those strong fall cold fronts that will move across the country. heat index, d.c. 101. hotter in d.c. than dallas today with the heat index. actually d.c. going to be one of the hottest heat indices throughout all of the east. detroit you're in for a treat once we get rid of these storms during the day today, saturday and sunday, gorgeous in the upper 70s. charlotte you have to wait until saturday going to be very hot, sunday's cooler for you, and norfolk area, saturday and sunday, little bit cooler. new york city, you may have to wait until sunday afternoon to start feeling some of that relief. and then definitely by monday and when you're in the deep south from charleston southward safina included it's not quite yet for you. you have to wait another couple weeks before you get the really fresh, cool air. as far as records go, philadelphia the record high is 94. you're expected to be 95. you're going to be close. i don't think we're going to get there in central park. hartford a chance for a record high today and boston may just be a little short. this is almost unprecedented late summer heat for many areas. atlantic city, you're expected to break your record high.

and then washington, d.c., dulles is expected to tie their record high. so a close call. so here's how the weekend outlook shapes up, showers and thunderstorms on saturday, with that front from little rock to memphis through ohio but again once it clears out that's when you get into the nice air. saturday night those storms will be in the east. they'll be exiting new england sunday morning. and they should be kicking out sunday afternoon, maybe boston gets clipped. but, this is kind of like what we've been waiting for alex, if you love finally turning the air conditioning off, open up the windows, drive to work with the windows down, it looks like sunday and monday is the days for you. >> okay, bill, thanks for that. >> as we go to break a look at the stories we are not covering this morning. the new, most interesting man, it's french actor who replaces jonathan goldsmith. so the brewer says it was looking for a contemporary twist to the legendary character to the most interesting man. we say we're not interested. here's another interesting man we're not covering by the way that wasn't related to michael phelps you got that.
