2001, how america honored the day we will never forget. and hillary clinton forced to answer questions about her health after a medical scare forced her to leave a 9/11 memorial early. we'll talk about the impact it's already having on her campaign. plus, the democratic nominee launches a new war of words, not against donald trump, but against half of his supporters, calling them, quote, a bag of deplorables. now she's expressing regret as some analysts say it could be her 47% moment. good morning, it's monday, september 12th, i'm louis bergdorf alongside betty nguyen. another emotional 9/11 remembrance for so many. >> yes, we'll have more from manhattan, washington, d.c., and pennsylvania in just a moment, but we do want to begin with

politics. hillary clinton has been diagnosed with pneumonia. clinton joined donald trump during a ceremony on a warm day, but after more than an hour there she left abruptly, appearing unsteady. all the while the press was left in the dark with the campaign mum on where the democratic nominee was going or what had happened, but video of her entering a van with the help of a secret service showed she was unsteady and clearly required support. she appeared to lean on a post and at one point her legs seemed to buckle. at 11:00 a.m. her campaign put out a statement saying in part during a ceremony she seemed overheated, but is feeling much better. the campaign said she even played with her grandkids there before appearing in front of the awaiting press and posing for a photo with a young girl before hopping back into her van. >> how are you feeling, secretary clinton? are you feeling better? >> yes, thank you very much. thanks, everybody. >> clinton then headed home to

leave the press pool in the dust, then last night her personal physician revealed in a statement, "secretary clinton has been experiencing a cough related to allergies. on friday during a follow-up evaluation of her prolonged cough she was diagnosed with pneumonia, put on antibiotics and advised to rest and modify her schedule. at this morning's event she became overheated and rehydrated. i have just examined her and she is rehydrated and recovering nicely." aides tell andrea mitchell she did not disclose her pneumonia because she thought she could power through and wasn't coughing saturday. now they believe that was a mistake. although her doctor has said she is in excellent health, there have been concerns before today, most notably back in 2012 when she suffered a concussion and had a blood clot. nbc's andrea mitchell has more on that part of the story. >> reporter: hillary clinton showing no sign of a health

problem during a busy campaign week, except for what her doctors at the time called seasonal allergies on labor day. 15 months ago a two-page medical report detailing her most serious health issue writing in december of 2012 clinton suffered a stomach virus after traveling, fainted and sustained a concussion. she was hospitalized, doctors finding a blood clot requiring blood thinning medication, which she still takes. a month later she had to wear special glasses when first testifying about benghazi. >> thank you, madam secretary, wonderful to see you in good health and as combative as ever. >> reporter: in 1998, clinton also had a clot in her leg. you've had at least two clots. how does that factor into your decision about whether to run for president and all the flying that entails? >> doesn't factor in at all. that, i have no doubt that i'm healthy enough. >> reporter: donald trump has

used all that to claim clinton is hiding a serious health problem. >> she also lacks the mental and physical stamina to take on isis. >> his latest paranoid fever dream is about my health. and all i can say is, donald, dream on. >> reporter: clinton's campaign has struck back at trump's medical report. a brief letter from his gastroevent rongt claiming atoningly excellent, extraordinary. the letter addressed to whom my concern. >> for months donald trump has questioned hillary clinton's fitness to become president. >> she'll stand at the teleprompter, spin around, always a short speech, then gets off the stage. she goes back home, she goes to sleep. to win trade in our country, you need tremendous physical and mental strength and stamina.

hillary clinton doesn't have that strength or stamina, believe me, and you know it and they know it and everybody knows it. she didn't go to louisiana. she didn't go to mexico. she was invited. she doesn't have the strength or the stamina to make america great again. believe me. >> but yesterday during a visit at a manhattan fire house, the republican nominee said this. >> trump, quick question about hillary clinton's health incident this morning, her health incident this morning? >> don't know anything about it. >> "the washington post" reports congressman peter king, who was with trump at the 9/11 ceremony earlier in the day said, "it was actually trump who told me what was going on. he leaned over and told me hillary wasn't feeling well. i said, really, that's all he

said." if asked about clinton's health, trump is expected to tread carefully, that the week's focus should be on her comments at a fundraiser over the weekend. let's go to those comments where hillary clinton seemed to write off half the support donald trump is garnering. >> you know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of trump's supporters into what i call the basket of deplorables. right? the racist, sexist, homophobic, zen phobic, islam phobic, you name it. and, unfortunately, there are people like that. and he has lifted them up. he has given voice to their websites that used to only have 11,000 people. now have 11 million.

he tweets and retweets their offensive, hate fful, mean spirited rhetoric. some of those folks, they are irredeemable, but thankfully they are not america. >> clinton went on to say the other half of trump supporters feel left behind by the government and are in search of a change. an outcry led clinton to clarify saying, "last night i was grossly generalistic and that's never a good idea. i regret saying half, that was wrong, but let's be clear, what's really deplorable is donald trump hired a major advocate from the so-called although-right movement to run his campaign. so i won't stop calling out bigotry and racist rhetoric in this campaign, also meant what i said last night about empathy. many trump supporters are hard working americans that don't feel the economy or our political system are working for

them. trump responded to clinton's reaction with his own statement, calling her unfit and incapable to serve, adding, isn't it disgraceful hillary clinton makes the worst mistake of the political season and instead of owning up to the grotesque attack on voters, she tries to turn it around with a pathetic rehash of words and insults used in her failing campaign. for the first time in a long while her true feelings came out, showing bigotry and hatred for millions of americans. how can she be president of the country when she has such contempt and disdain for so many great americans? meanwhile, the vice presidential nominees campaigned in virginia, where tim kaine took on donald trump and mike pence for calling russian president vladimir putin a stronger leader than president obama. >> that irrational hostility toward president obama, which started the very first day of his term for some of these people, is unpatriotic. and we have to call it out.

[ applause ] if you can't tell the difference between leadership and dictatorship, you wouldn't pass fifth grade civics. >> tim, when donald trump and i said that the small and bullying president of russia was a strong leader on the world stage, that wasn't an endorsement of vladimir putin, that was an indictment of the weak and feckless leadership of this president and your running mate. >> trump also came under criticism from some of america's top intelligence officers as former acting cia director published an open letter stating trump could not credibly serve as commander in chief if he embraces putin. donald trump warns if he does not prevail this november, republicans will never win

another election, labeling it the last election. trump on friday claimed if she were to win, hillary clinton would provide citizenship to enough undocumented immigrants to forever sway upcoming elections in favor of the democrats. >> i think this would be the last election if i don't win, i think this will be the last election that the republicans have a chance of winning, because you're going to have people flowing across the borders, you're going to have illegal immigrants coming in, legalized, they'll be able to vote. once that all happens, you can forget it. i can guarantee you, you're not going to have one republican vote and it's already a hard number. already the path is much more difficult for the republicans. you just have to look at the maps. >> the latest batch of polling shows hillary clinton maintaining a national lead over donald trump, but the race appears to be deadlocked in several battleground states. "the washington post"/abc news poll has clinton ahead by eight points, 51% to 43%. she holds a five-point lead 46%

to trump's 41% with gary johnson at 9% and jill stein at 2%. clinton and trump suddenly very tight in four battleground states, gary johnson polling near double digits in all. in new hampshire, clinton has a two-point lead, and nevada, trump leads clinton by a single digit, 42% to 41%. in georgia it's trump at 44% and clinton at 42% and johnson at 10%. and look at deep red arizona, trump leads clinton by two points, 40 to 38 with gary johnson taking 12. the latest cbs battleground tracker poll has clinton ahead in florida by two points, 44% to 42%. and in ohio, clinton leads trump by seven points. >> betty, americans paused yesterday to remember a day the nation will never forget. it's been 15 years since nearly 3,000 lives were lost on

september 11, 2001, and ceremonies were held across the country in honor of the fallen. organizers estimate that 8,000 people gathered in lower manhattan for the remembrance ceremony at ground zero. in shanksville, pennsylvania, the nation remembered those who gave their lives to divert a plane likely headed to the u.s. capitol, where president george w. bush called the first act of counterterrorism in the war on terror. president obama took in the service at the pentagon, laying a wreath and sharing a message of unity and resolve. >> groups like al qaeda, like isil, know that we will never be able to -- they will never be able to defeat a nation as great and as strong as america, so instead they try to terrorize in the hopes that they can stoke enough fear that we turn on each other and that we change who we are or how we live.

interest rate hike the thing that's actually causing this selloff? >> well, certainly believe that was the catalyst, which started the selloff on friday, some concerns specifically over the statements made by fed policy maker from boston that he thought the case was building for a rate hike. the market tends to perceive that as negative because they anticipate further tightening in the economy, so we did see that selloff, which is continuing around the globe. it was a down day for asian equities and here in europe the markets are off in the neighborhood of 2%, some having to do with the european central banksohe wilbe a focus, again, on additional fed speakers today, but watch the u.s. futures, because they are indicating another lower open, even indicating for a triple digit loss for the dow jones today. the announcement from sunday

from elon musk they are updating features of autopilot. this is in response to the fatal crash in may. some of the new features, perhaps, could have prevented that fatality and specifically we're talking about autopilot system changes that will be a software tweak, so you do not have to bring your car in to any shop and specifically more use of the radar sensor, improved auto steering, and the system will disengage if the drivers ignore warnings. so that should be good news for drivers worried about too much reliance on the hands-free operation. guys, back to you for now. >> nancy hungerford live from london, thanks so much. now a check of the weather with meteorologist bill karins. we have a couple weeks left of summer. i want to hold on as long as i can. >> we are at the peak of the hurricane system, this is the time of year we're tracking two or three storms out there. of course, we just got done with hermine, two weeks long. last week was kind of a break and right now we're at the

welcome back. a cease-fire is set to take effect in syria later today, following a bloody weekend between government and rebel forces. war monitors reporting clashes around the country, including air strikes that left at least 90 people dead. these are images from social media of the aftermath of a strike in a rebel-held area of aleppo. secretary of state john kerry and russian foreign minister

sergey lavrov announced the cease-fire deal in geneva, switzerland. >> foreign correspondent matt bradley. a very violent lead-up to the cease-fire set to take effect, what, several hours from now? >> that's right, betty. it's been a very bloody weekend and that sends an ominous signal hours ahead the cease-fire that's scheduled to begin at sundown tonight. syrian rebels have already expressed grave doubts about the agreement since russia and the u.s. signed it friday night. now this deal looks impossiblily more uncertain, and just this morning, bashar al assad saying he and the state are determined to recover all areas from the terrorists, and this just before the guns are supposed to fall sile silent, but the syrian government has spent the weekend pounding rebel-held areas, killing nearly 100 people and wounding nearly 100 more. russia, who goeshtsed the deal with the u.s., has been on the defensive as well. they are bombing rebel-held

areas in aleppo and idlib. forces jockeying just before a proposed cease-fire begins, but that doesn't look good for the cease-fire. the agreement is really the best hope for some kind of reprieve to the five-year-long civil war that's killed nearly half a million people and would allow humanitarian aid to flow into blockaded parts of syria, so if the cease-fire holds up, russia and the u.s. may start to target islamic state and other groups together, but this antagonism looks to spill over past the weekend. >> a lot of people counting on the cease-fire to hold. nbc's matt bradley, thank you. hollywood and the transgender community is mourning the loss of alexis arquette. ye earlier in her career she appeared in of mice and men, pulp fiction, and the wedding singer. her brother, richmond arquette, did not confirm the cause of
