good morning. it's monday, september 26th. it's been one of the most anticipated moments since the race was set and tonight hillary clinton and donald trump will step out on to the same stage for the first debate of the general election. moderated by lester holt at hofstra university, tonight's debate begins at 9:00, will last 90 minutes, dividing into six sections with a two minute answer, two minute response, followed by ten minutes of debate. last night the debate commission revealed that the first question will go to clinton whose sparring partner was revealed this week. in the role of donald trump, felipe a long time aid who clinton describe as loyal and shrewd. clinton's camp revealed that a

debate in history, this race has become a dead heat with donald trump gaining even more ground in a new poll that was still in the field just 48 hours before the candidates take the stage. a new bloomberg politics poll shows hillary clinton and donald trump tied in a two way race. both candidates at 46% nationally. a big factor in clinton's decline? a drop among young voters, falling from a 29 point lead in august to a 10 point lead today. in a four way match-up, clinton has fallen slightly behind trump who lead 43% to 41%. another national poll from the "washington post" abc news also has the rate in a statistical tie giving clinton a slight edge 46% to frutrump's 4 4%. >> and a sad day in sports as the golf world mourns the passing of arnold palmer. he died yesterday afternoon at the age of 87 due to

steel town who transcended his sport, becoming a hero to so many. an incredible career. coming up later, we'll be remembering another notal death in the world of sport, miami marlins pitcher jose fernandez. charlotte's mayor has lifted a city wide curfew following a weekend of peaceful protests. demonstrations continued yesterday as people gathered outside bank of america stadium before the panthers game against the vikings. police say they arrested a man after finding a pistol and fully loaded magazine if his bag. panthers quarterback cam newton took part in his own demonstration on the field before yesterday's game wearing a shirt with a quote on the back by martin luther king jr. that read injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. the demonstrations tipped into the evening as marchers made their way through the center of charlotte. the protesters are calling for the city's police department to

release all of the body and dam camera footage of the deadly encounter with scott last tuesday. the department released what it calls relevant portions of that footage on saturday. now we want to warn you, what we're about to show you does contain disturbing images. the video appears to show scott comes out of a white suv with his hands to his side. as he's backing up, four shots can be heard and scott can be seen falling to the ground. police say scott had a gun, but the chief said the video does not prove that he had it in his hand. one officer shot scott and he was not wearing a body camera. they add that the gun they recovered was loaded and that it had scott's dna and fingerprints on it.department's video release came one day after the video of keith scott released cellphone video she recorded of the encounter. she could be heard warning police not to shoot her husband, but like the police video, it doesn't show whether scott had a gun in his hand. the department's chief says the footage supports the fact that his department has stood by

while attorneys for the scott's family say serious questions remain about what happened. >> the footage itself will not create in anyone's mind absolute certainty as to what this case represents and what the outcome should be. the footage only supports all of the other information, physical evidence, the statements from witnesses and officers, and all of the other information, scientific and visible, that create the entire picture. >> one of the biggest questions is when you look at this dash cam footage, when you look at the time frame between mr. scott stepping out of his vehicle to the moment he unfortunately passes away on the pavement is do those actions, do those precious seconds justify this

suspect behind a shooting rampage in washington state small set to appear in court this morning. arrecan cetin was arrested saturday after an officer spotted him walk down the street. that officer described a tan ce zombie like. witnesses say this moment shows the moment he was staying into custody. five people died in that shooting. security footage shows cetin entering the mall apparently unarmed and then ten minutes later with a rifle. he escaped by car. the motive is still under investigation and police stress that while they aren't ruling terrorism out, it was, quote, just too early to tell. he had a case in december that was resolved with deferred

prosecution. let's get a check on our weather now with bill karins. a little chilly this morning. >> yeah, fall arrived. great lakes, northeast, you felt it this morning. we had the heavy rain in iowa and this was the cedar river. look in the middle of your stream there, that was a deer that got caught in the floodwaters. struggling for dear life, it literally ended up right alongside a bridge trapped. a guy went down in to the floodwater, put a rope around the baby deer and then it went off and they released it into the woods safe and sound. made the crowd happy and everyone else, too. nice pictures there. but that wassen one of the stories over the week end was the iowa flooding. the other is the heavy rain in texas. wor worse weather this morning around core miss christy. san antonio also has downpours. flood watches will continue for another hour or two and then the rainfall should be dying off throughout this area. so texas will see some improvement. and all the rivers in iowa have crested and now they will start coming down in the days ahead.

so we'll track this next cold front. we'll see rain that will be developing through ohio as we go throughout this afternoon. this is at 6:00 p.m. this afternoon. so considering that the after school stuff and maybe heading home from work, so buffalo, rochester, maybe syracuse, pittsburgh heading toward state college, back down through the appalachians, that's where the rain will be. and then as we go throughout the overnight hours, this will begin to shift to the east. we'll have overnight rain in d.c., philly, new york and then southern new england looks like it will still be raining this time tomorrow morning ending in boston and providence throughout the peak of the rush hour. and then by the time we get to about tomorrow evening, looks like that rainfall will be completely gone. so today's forecast, it is a cold morning. make sure the kids have their gloves on. it's in the 40s in many spots of new england, only 64 for a high today in boston prks but very nice day in new york and philadelphia. scattered storms in the south. as we go throughout the day today and tomorrow, one of the stories that could develop is the fire danger in the west. this is the santa ana winds we talk about all the time.

>> just so difficult to watch there. those were just some of the emotional moms from the miami marlins news conference yesterday following the tragic death of star pitcher jose fernandez. the 24-year-old was killed in a boating accident early sunday morning. according to officials, coast guard patrol boat spotted an overturned vessel around 3:00 a.m. sunday morning. authorities say fernandez was one of three people killed when the boat capsized on a jetty oig. officials say the boat was going at a high speed, but there was no immediate indication that drugs or alcohol were a cause of the crash. the marlins canceled the game against the braves and instead it was a somber scene at mar are lynns park with the number 16 posted on the video board and written in in chalk on the pitcher's mound. fernandez was drafted back in 2011 by the marlins. me to the majors by 2013 and won the rookie of the year award.

fer m fernandez defected from cuba with his mother at the age of 13 and actually saved her life during a harrowing boat ride. a wave had swept his mother out to sea and before he had time to think, he jumped in and slowly swam her back to the boat. fernandez is survived by his mother, grandmother and girlfriend and just last week fernandez posted a photo of his girlfriend announcing that the couple was expecting their first child. the marlins are expected to return to the field today in a game against the new york mets, but the whole world of baseball and the nation just in mourning over the death of this incredible athlete. let's turn now to headlines out of college football where after 12 seasons, national title and pair of s.e.c. championships with the tigers, the school announced that it has fired les miles. the move comes just after lsu's 18-13 loss in the final seconds of saturday's game against auburn that dropped the tigers

nancy, what are investors watching for tonight? >> well, they certainly will be watching, many expected to be glued to the tv because at the moment, markets have been largely pricing in a victory for hillary clinton to get into the white house. but several strategists including those at bank of america merrill lynch say markets are underpricing election risks at the moment and they see the election outcome as the single most important determinant of the direction of markets going forward. so some are saying if trump does better than expected, we could see a rush into safe haven assets. that's the view at ig securities a brother allege, that would include buying of government bonds, programs the yen and even gold. the other big factor moving far k markets today is the trial of oil. an informal meeting of owe peg

glove weather already. but we have freeze warnings from albany, new york northward, we're in the 30s this morning. no windchill really to deal with, but it is a cold morning. we've had our first hard freeze in adirondacks and northern new england, so it is that time of year where we start getting the frost out there and pretty soon we'll be scraping the cars, too. so today, at least it will be a nice day in new england. plenty of sunshine after the cold start. we will see some on and off rain in the southeast, but scattered showers and storms. the worst weather this morning is down in south texas from snaen, corpus christi with heavy rains. one of the big stories that we'll be watching this week in the weather world is what will happen in the tropics. if you've noticed this hurricane season, we haven't had really many big huge storms to talk about that have been threatening any land areas. we have what we call an area of investigation, big cloud mass here. this should become matthew as we go throughout the next couple days. this is a southern storm. not likely that this will turn

safely out into the atlantic. all of our extended computer models do take it over the next four days somewhere near thursday near the windward islands south towards martin sneak. martinique. by the time we get to saturday and sunday, puerto rico out to the do dominican republic. and then the models go all over the place. some miss the u.s., some take it towards the caribbean. so we'll have to wait and see. that again is probably 6 to 10 days from now, but that could be a storm to watch. and the other story for california today, not often we say this, but los angeles today could be 102. so fire danger very high. and you know from living out there with those santa ana winds, chris, that's the dangerous time. you get the heat up there about 100, windy and firefighters are nervous. hopefully no fires will start. >> difference in temperature between l.a. and saranac lake?
