good morning, everyone it is wednesday, september 28th, i'm alex wit. we start with overnight breaking news. former israeli prime minister shimon peres has died. he was hospitalized for a major stroke two weeks ago. he was the last surviving leader of israel's founding member. he was best known for make being peace between the palestinians and israel. former president bill clinton tweeted out a picture of the two in the oval office calling peres my brilliant and eloquent friend whose life was a blessing for all who striefd for peace. >> reporter: shimon peres was recognized by many as the world's eldest statesman.

welcome back, everyone. as summer gives way to fall california's historic wildfire season continues to show no signings of slowing down. 20 wildfires are burning across the state. the rapidly moving fires so far burnt 2,200 acres and only about 10% contained. one home, six out buildings have been destroyed. 300 more are threatened. meanwhile, the marsh fire has destroyed 390 acres and 0% contained. one firefighter has been injured fighting that blaze. 850 more are on the scene. so far almost 4800 wildfires in california just this year burning more than 555,000 acres. >> it's unbelievable. we're tracking flooding in iowa this morning as well. in recent days people there have seen high water and 5,000 people were asked to evacuate. so far nothing as bad as it was

in cedar rapids back in 2008. people in iowa's second biggest city installed temporary barriers in two days and filled a quarter of a million sand bags after heavy rains last week. so far it's holding. cedar rapids suffered catastrophic flooding eight years ago. this past summer in the heat of another presidential campaign at the time senator president obama, senator tim kaine and senator sarah palin toured the damage. 10,000 people were displaced. previous record was 20 feet that "the des moines register" writes. as most sequels the flood of 2016 lacked the drama of the original blockbuster . let's bring in our meteorologist bill karins. >> it was nine feet lower. that's like the difference between someone's house. >> yeah. but still pretty bad. >> second worse on record. but they learned from the one they had eight years ago. we have other concerns.

additional flooding problems that we'll focus on areas around washington, d.c. a storm system that's up around chicago today and that's going to pull up tropical moisture into areas around washington, d.c. it will begin today and continue for the next couple of days. for that reason flash flood watch has been issued from front royal to baltimore. not going to be widespread. there's going to be little small area. like a funnel. we have areas around washington, d.c. here that could pick up five to seven inches of rain. going up the road a little bit to philadelphia you may get an inch or less. narrow area of northern virginia, maryland and delaware that will be the target for the heavy rain starting today and won't end until friday. gloomy period here for areas of the mid-atlantic and temperatures and cool air in southern new england. that gorgeous fall weather you've been experiencing that's over. today boston 60. new york city 68. we're still very warm in the south. typical afternoon storms. temperatures are coming down in

regarding isis. speaking before the senate homeland security and governmental affairs committee, comey said that the real challenge will come after fall of the terror group. they will not all die on the battlefield in syria and iraq, there will be a terrorist d diastpora in the next two to five years. we need to prepare ourselves to confront natural threat >> he says fewer people are trying to travel to syria to join syria. let's turn to business now after continued backlash the ceo of wells fargo is now expected to forfeit about $41 million in pompeii. at the same time the independent directors of the wells fargo board announced they would launch an investigation into the bank's retail practice. the news comes after some wells fargo employees were accused of opening fee generated accounts without customers authorization in order to meet sales goals.

for more on this, let's bring in louisa bojesen. what are we learning from the wells fargo scandal and a possible mission to mars? >> they are taking it very seriously as they should at wells fargo. talking about 2 million accounts that you mentioned that were opened without customers knowing anything about it. not even like 30,000 or 2,000 which would be big numbers but we're talking 2 million. definitely taking it seriously. one of the big points of critique is executive pay outs and bonuses still continued during this investigation. so now the ceo stumpf will be foregoing a big part of this pay out. he's saying he's not going to get a salary through the investigation and he's also going to be foregoing uninvested equity worth $41 million while they "first look" to this. let me talk about mars. elon musk wants to colonize mars. cost the same of an average home if you look doing that for

now. we'll watch these little spaghetti lines. these are our different computers telling us where it will go in the days ahead. these change every six to 12 hours. this is five days from right now with the possibility in the western caribbean, maybe possibly heading to the bahamas and jamaica. florida not that far away from this and bahamas too. and then it diverge from going from the gulf or up the east coast. east coast is in play and florida. it could be a much stronger storm. we have to watch that carefully. many of our computers think that will be a hurricane in three or four days. hitting jamaica first and concerned with haiti and eastern cuba and have to watch out for bahamas and florida come monday through wednesday next week. >> we'll keep an eye on that. before we head to the break let's look at some stories. today is national drink beer day not to be confused with national

. welcome back. tennis superstar serena williams says she will no longer keep quiet in the wake of racial tensions. on a post on her facebook page she recounted fearing for her life while driving to meetings. williams concluded her post, i won't be silent. as police investigate the deadly police shooting of 43-year-old keith lamont scott in charlotte court records revealing information about his past. this as a young girl makes a tearful and emotional plea before the first city council meeting since that shooting. gabe gutierrez reports. >> reporter: it was already a contentious charlotte city council meeting when this 9-year-old captured the frustration of so many. >> we are black people and we shouldn't have to feel -- we shouldn't have to protest because you're treating us
