tv   With All Due Respect  MSNBC  September 28, 2016 3:00pm-4:01pm PDT

3:00 pm
if you like comedy, guess what starts this saturday night. saturday night comes back and they delayed season premier a week just so they would have the first presidential debate for material. that's all for tonight. we'll be back tomorrow with more mtp daily. previously on "with all due respect." >> your basic argument, the premise, he won't win all four. >> no. no. north, north carolina, i would much rather beat her. >> did you see these characters with the maps? you know, the electoral college? so about a month ago, oh, it's a very small path for trump. today i'm watching. oh, wow! now they're looking at all these paths. >> with all due respect to donald trump, he can take our maps, when he pries them from our cold dead fingers.
3:01 pm
for two guys with so many maps, it is amazing how often we are directionless and lost. tonight on the show we'll tell you the tale that we like to call the billionaire and the beauty queen. this is part two. donald j. trump and his campaign are dealing with the fallout and his fat shaming of the miss universe pageant win here spent the last 24 hours telling her story with fox news, cnn and the "today" show. >> what were the names that he called you? miss piggy, miss housekeeping, miss eating machine. >> all to your face? >> yes. all the time. i know what i left with him and he knows too. and he was really aggressive.
3:02 pm
he was really rude. he was a bad person with me. and that is the story that i need to share. with my community. we can't accept, we can't accept more insults for my latin community. no more. i need to share my story. i think, i can open a few eyes. i can maybe change a few minds. you know, i don't think this person is the right person then can be a president. >> mark, we'll talk about how the media has been covering this story in just a moment. my question for you at this hour, whether this story is accelerating or finally starting to simmer down. >> the trump campaign could be foregiven for thinking, this will go away. that has happen in the past when trump has had these flaps. some have lingered but not as
3:03 pm
dominant stories. the reason why i think they may be wrong, with this may linger as a news story in a hot way. we're in a different phase of the campaign. this happen in the debate. it didn't happen at a rally or in an off hand remark. this happened in a debate in such a high profile way and she is someone who, whatever flaws she might have, what trump said about her will res natonate wit lot of people. i think the trump people think they can ignore it. they may be wrong. >> i said yesterday, this is nuts to insult someone in a way that has such a resonance with so many people. 85 million people watched that debate. let's say 40 million women. virtually every one of those 85 million people who know someone, all of us, who have dwelt their weight issues. >> certainly the ones who know me feel that way. >> who have dealt with weight issues or someone in our family, people with eating disorders,
3:04 pm
people who have been bullied. these are not abstract policy issues. these are like the grist of the culture. the kind of things people talk about over their dinner table every day. and that is a very dangerous terrain continue to subtle many, many many, many millions of people that way which is why i think you're right. she's come across quite sympathetically in most of the media interviews. the ones i've seen, she's come across sympathetically. she was hurt, she has a right to be hurt. i don't know if the trump campaign will ever apologize. you said yesterday they should. i think more than yesterday, it would be smart to shut this down by apologizing. >> what he said about her, to her was wrong. and rude. and insensitive. and i think a lot of people will say that. and i'll say again. the press is not going on drop this. the clinton campaign is not going to drop it. i'm not saying it will cost the election but they're wrong to think at this phase, in a
3:05 pm
highest profile thing like a debate, that this is another person trump insulted and who cares? >> a lot of people think donald trump is a bully. and you can be mean to your politicaopponents. you can say a lot of things about them and no one cares. that's what is expected of politicians. when you start bullying private citizens, a gold star family or a judge in indiana, from indiana, you're in a different terrain. >> i'll say one more thing. the dominant meme is trump, marchly, his campaign are not competent. that they're not performing competently because of the debate. the prism through this this is being seen is incompetence, failure to put it down. all right. as women, the trump campaign has been largely shrugging off the machado story. last night, katrina pearson was on megyn kelly's set. >> fit we look at the context, we are talking about beauty pageants.
3:06 pm
these individuals who participate have a weight clause in their contract. >> he has called some women fat pigs. he is constantly evaluating women on a number, if they're a 7, a 10. he is very into body shape of women. >> absolutely. mr. trump owned a beauty pageant. that's where that comes from. that is also entertainment. that is also television. when you look at the women, for example, his wife and his daughters. they say he treats everyone the same. we can't just pull out one section of women and say he only does this to. we he will criticize those who criticize him. >> you can't be a 10 if you're flat chested. he hasn't said the equivalent of a man. >> everyone has their own opinion on what a 10 . >> conservatives have been trying to discredit machado by digging up from her past and claims she threatened to judge limbaugh today. calling hear porn star.
3:07 pm
the drive by media as limbaugh calls it have been giving story plenty of air time for the last 48 hours. fox news, hover, a different story. they don't report on it so you can't really decide. yes, the fair and balanced story covered it last night. but today they couldn't seem to find the time even as other tv outlets led with it. fox did somehow find time to cover these important stories. >> have you seen this story? a marriage proposal. turning into a major deal last night at yankee stadium. >> if you went to bed a capricorn, you may now be a sagittarius. according to nasa. you may have always had a different sign and not known it. >> where this monster storm is heading and not heading. >> look who got caught in the car pool lane. >> a new look at the unsung hero of jon benet ramsey.
3:08 pm
>> there were few in rare instances where machado did come on fox but it was quickly smothered. watch what happened on fox and friends when a focus group of five mothers talking about monday's debate. the host did not bring up machado. when a woman in the focus group did, she was immediately cut off. >> when you go on national television the morning after the debate and attack someone and call them a pig, and threaten -- >> so lisa, what's your response? let people talk. >> what's good for the goose -- >> is good for the gander. >> hillary was an assault. >> the apparently effort by conservative media either the defend trump or ignore the story effectively discourage the trump campaign from changing course? >> one of the things that is true about a lot of republican politicians, republican nominees, they start as the
3:09 pm
campaign gets longer and longer. they get sucked into the conservative media cocoon and stop talking to people outside that cocoon. it is understandable. you want the easy questions, not the hard questions. but it is not to your political benefit to do that. in this case, i think if donald trump is just looking at fox news and reading breitbart and conservative blogs, he doesn't understand what impact this is having in the real world and thinking this is no big deal when it is a big deal. >> steve bannon and dave bossey, to some sentence, kellyanne conway are in that cocoon. if they think they're getting a realistic appraisal on how this issue is playing work real people. every reporter i know is being asked about it. they are kidding themselves. they are doing trump a disservice. if trump is flying around on trump force lawn and saying they're not talking about it. therefore, i don't need to grapple with. this insane.
3:10 pm
>> we watched the same thing happen in 2012 when mitt romney started thinking benghazi -- they were only talking about it on fox news. everyone is talking about benghazi. they were not. it was the polar opposite. >> and the other thing is, fox can ignore it all they want. but it is getting huge may everywhere else. and it is one thing to be in the fox cocoon, the rush cocoon when you try to win the general election. you're trying on win women in the philadelphia suburbs. even when you think the rest of the media is liberally biased, it does you no good not to pay attention to it. because it is reaching the millions of voters you need. >> i often talk about liberal bias in the media covering and caring about a story where the republican nominee consulted a woman for her weight. nothing to do with liberal bias. nothing to do with liberal bias. and the fox will continue clearly to ignore this.
3:11 pm
and if that makes trump think the story has gone away, i say again, wrong. >> like bunch of monk business their hands over their ears and eyes. when we come back, bernie sanders lends hillary clinton a hand today and michelle obama hits the campaign trail. we'll talk about their millennial hopes and dreams. d lt ugly face of hers. she's a slob. she ate like a pig. a person who's flat chested is very hard to be a 10. does she have a good body? no. does she have a fat [expletive]? absolutely. do you treat women with respect? i can't say that either. whfight back fastts, with tums smoothies. it starts dissolving the instant it touches your tongue. and neutralizes stomach acid at the source. ♪ tum -tum -tum -tum

so, millennials, we've talked on this program how many of you are still luke warm with hillary clinton. that's why she visited the town to talk more about student debt with the coolest white haired dude in all of politics. bernie sanders. lately we've noticed a new line of millennial persuasion being used by clinton and her team. there are kernels, young voters might vote for libertarian candidate or they might not turn
3:14 pm
out to vote at all. so many attempts on inspire young voters to get behind clinton. her highest profile surrogates are trying to scare them that saying anything but voting for clinton could lead, would lead the a trump presidency. two people were out promoting that message. michelle obama and her husband president obama during a radio interview on the steve harvey show. >> if you don't vote, that's a vote for trump. if you vote for a third party candidate who has no chance to win, that's a vote for trump. >> if you vote for someone other than hillary or if you don't vote at all. then you are helping to elect hillary's opponent. and the stakes are far too high to take that chance. remember, it is not about voting for the perfect candidate. this is no such person. >> so john, is this a tactic
3:15 pm
that will turn millennials out and turn them out to vote for hillary clinton? >> well, there's a version of it. it has to be a two-prong thing. she has to talk in a way and maybe part of the thing she talked about, her college affordability man's. that it is a key issue for a lot of millennials are joined at the hip. some of this, things could be worse if from a democratic point of view if trump wins. it will be part of the message but it can't be all of it. >> i think it will work from the millennials i have talked to who were wildly enthusiastic about sanders. sanders was a different thing. they didn't like him because he was a democrat, a politician, they didn't like him because they had long followed his career. they liked his passion and his anti-establishment. i think getting them to vote for clinton will be difficult. if they were forced to vote, i think a lot of them would give

up johnson and stein. on the current state of affairs i think this could be the key thing in the whole election. she little will go to trump. what portion goes to clinton and what portion stays home is really, in some of these states where johnson is in the 10, 11, 12%, it could make a difference. >> i talked on some millennials in florida last week. you realize two things. that bernie sanders really wants to you vote for hillary clinton and sanders and clinton are almost indistinguishable on issues. >> especially issues you care with. and all five were fully unmoved. in the end they said maybe. there was no light bulb. well, of course, i'll do that. it was, maybe, probably, i don't like trump. >> even though sanders is older than hillary clinton, he was new. and his newness was what was attractive. he seemed like a new force in politics.
3:17 pm
>> they don't like trump but they think of clinton as a totally different species than sanders. and if sanders got them engaged in politics and for to have some extent, president obama got them engaged. with you a whole new wave of voters. the fact that he wanted to break the system. they want to break the system too. hillary en when she agrees with sanders, she doesn't want to break the system. >> they must keep at it. finally we have to turn to some sad news from last night. former israeli president shimon perez died last night. his funeral will be attended by many world leaders, among those, bill clinton, vice president biden and president obama. the statement read in part, few people who we share this world with who changed the course of human history. not just through their role in human events but because they

our next guest is the media columnist for what donald trump likes to call the failing and failed new york times. jim? >> how are you? >> tell me what b what you think of this 24 hours of coverage. yesterday we had coverage about who won, who lost. now we have a different story line. talk about where the debate fallout story is going from a media point of view. >> it is going in like five different directions waex continued fallout over the fattest comment about a former beauty queen. we have questions about whether he is going to buckle down and prepare more for his next debate. there are some gender questions about how the coverage went for hillary clinton. so it is like, the debate did not disappoint. and then the huge ratings news. so the debate delivered more than i've ever seen in my time covering politics and the media.
3:23 pm
>> what besides the beauty queen story line, what other story lines have been coming out of debate, for instance, why you story has a big story on the debate prep. >> it is debate prep this year becomes more than a process story. and more of the insight. it says something. i think hillary clinton seemingly prepared remarks, set this up, i am not only preparing for the debate but for the presidency. >> i like you said seemingly prepared. >> so a planned remark. but it clearly landed the way the campaign is embracing it. >> she came prepared for the debate -- if you can't prepare for the debate, how will you prepare for the presidency? >> and i think the same with how trump prepares for the next one. i don't think that's such a gimmick. i don't think it is a talking point. i think they mean it. >> so all day long with machado, it has seeped into british tab

sxloids the conservative media sphere that have been negative about her past. we've referenced them glancingly at the beginning of the show. have you seen thus far any main stream nonright outlets that have picked those up and do you think they will if they haven't already? >> i haven't seen them pick it up and run with it the same way. i do think if there is yet another story tomorrow morning. does the trump campaign want another story about this tomorrow morning? i don't think that having a candidate fight with a third party. he is not focusing on trade, jobs. >> the press loves a winner. clinton comes out and has a winner. i vm seen many negative stories about hillary clinton since the debate with anything. a lot of negative stories about trump. is that bad practice on the part of the media? should we not say she won the debate so no more investigative stories no, more asking better

3:31 pm
>> he was really rude with me. he was, he tried to destroy myself esteem, and now i'm a voice in the atten community. >> as a person, as a human, as a man, a sensitive man that i know you are, how do you feel about that? >> that is a personal thing that miss machado is choosing to do. apparently she has some disagreement with mr. trump. she's been trying to smear him for a long time now and it is none of my business. i'm not going on weigh in on it too much. that's between her and him. there are some things in her back grounds that are questionable. >> what he said to her isn't in dispute. a lot of it is on videotape. >> she chose to participate in the pageant. they had these interactions. and i don't think it matters and i don't think it matters to the american people. the voters. they don't care about the interaction from 20 years ago or 17 years ago.
3:32 pm
they care about the economy, national security, on and on and on. they care about the women he's employed. about kellyanne conway who is the campaign manager. i think the left is trying to portray trump as this monster but this one woman. >> this was not 15 years ago. this was two days ago he went on national tv, the morning after the debate and attacked her for gaining weight. >> he was telling the story. >> and he accused of gaining weight. >> he didn't accuse her. he was talking about what happened 17 years ago. >> he said she was the worst contestant they had to deal with because she lost a lot of weight. >> he talked about other reasons. how she was difficult to deal with. >> did he talk about h weight? >> we're talking about a tiny issue here. >> do you think anybody in ohio, pennsylvania, florida is going to vote on this? absolutely not. >> did he talk about her weight. >> he mentioned that as part of the overall issue with her.
3:33 pm
>> i think you learn a lot in these situations about temperature perm and it is striking to me the morning after the debate, that didn't go that well for him, his immediate response is to attack a private citizen for her weight. i think that's a window into his -- >> if you were a trump adviser, would you say don't talk about it and it will go away? >> i would say your temperament is the number one issue holding you back from being president. just say you and her had a disagreement. move on. i'm here to talk about taxes today and my tax cut plan. and anything but that. and i've been through a lot of crises. anything with that is a huge mistake for anybody out there. all it does is bring his temperament into play. >> temperament and character. it speaks to his character also. >> he made a comment. that was yesterday morning. now the media wants to run with the narrative. obviously it is being pushed by
3:34 pm
the clinton campaign. the two of you know well, been on as a guest of the show. i think what miss machado is saying is not borne out by the truth. talk about mr. trump's pr pose always. talk about the childcare plan which is revolutionary for a republican to want maternity leave. i don't want to dwell on this. i'm as critical of the media and how they cover republicans as anyone. in fairness, it was trump who. on fox and friends that she had a weight problem. the media didn't say it. emthat. >> if you look at the new york times, them the same thing. and she herself said the same thing in the new york times. >> the i want to move on. >> give us your overall sense of the debate. how do you see her chances versus her chances? >> look, this race was getting within the margin of error. and the debate would be the
3:35 pm
decisive event. i thought she would come out strong, understanding the issues, ready to be president. i think she came out more aggressive than i expected and that i think aggressiveness against trump worked. the question was, was she aggressive to go toe to toe with trump? yes. she basically thumped him. she baited him and thumped him. even though in the first half-hour, they were candidate to candidate. in the next hour she basically thump asked baited him and he kind of lost it. >> do you agree with david plouffe that her chances of winning? >> no one's chances in this world are 100%. >> a real straightforward question. a big debate coming up. people talking about what should be different. does donald trump need to prepare or did he prepare sufficiently? he prepared sufficiently for the debate and he will be absolutely ready for the next debate is ready for the last debate.
3:36 pm
>> you're saying that you and your team feel as though donald trump prepares for the second team exactly the way that he prepares for the first debate, he'll be golden. >> we're very confident. if you look at monday's debate, hillary clinton again tried on lie to the american people about the tpp. she bhid new york crime rates. she lied about not saying super predator. and she was robotic. she was very scripted. >> who won the debate? >> i think donald trump won the debate. i think he continued the trajectory of the race. >> four weeks ago the trump campaign was said to be in panic. a great two weeks and then the debate happen. >> in most republican leaders i talk on believe that hillary has an edge. it is close. she has an edge. she'll probably win. but right now the win won't be so decisive that it will do a lot of damage. that's anecdotal.
3:37 pm
i talk on people about it. >> 90% of republicans are for donald trump. and pennsylvania, about a week and a half ago, they said 71% of the pennsylvania republicans were behind trump. now in just one week, 85. a 14% swing. >> how potent is the message that he dabbled in the debate, you've been part of the washington problem for 30 years. how potent is that? >> with 70% saying things on the right track. messagewise, if any of us were talking about the message, it might be powerful. if he does two more debates, his temperament gets in the way and he doesn't appear qualified. this thing will snow ball in her direction festival bounces back. look. if after the next debate we're talking about, maybe we need change. let's look at these tax cut plans. what do you think? trade? that would help. >> the first half-hour. we could be talking about trade. here's what i don't think. >> that's not what we're talking about.
3:38 pm
there is a snow ball of stories coming out of the debate. it is not substantive. >> i thought first 20 minutes -- >> once start talking about birtherism, he talk about who called sean hannity and the woman's weight. >> the reason those issues came out is because that's what the moderator asked about. >> so constantly in politics, one says we want to talk about the issues and one wants to talk about nonsense. listen to what donald trump said a few minutes ago on the trail in iowa. >> all those days off and she can't even make to it her car. isn't it tough? >> so he's back to talking about 9/11. who here thinks that's a good line? >> another thing, follow money. follow money. >> this issue. do you think it is a smart move for your boston impugning hillary clinton's health again saying she couldn't make to it
3:39 pm
her car in. >> stamina is part of the requirement for president. you took one line of that speech. there are a lot of lines in the speech. he did follow the money. and that's what the speech was concentrated on. >> we don't want to suggest that's all he said today. but you come here and said, the clinton people say the same thing. we want to talk about issues. you're saying she couldn't make to it her car when she had pneumonia. >> this is a good reason why we talk about substantive issues. we're not talking about the other things he discussed in the speech. he discussed trade and taxes. >> he did not make these comments that you know full well if he attack her health, people will pay attention to that. do you want to talk about issues or her health? >> i'll talk about anything you want but i prefer to talk about issues. >> like you, i've been involved in a lot of campaigns. it is typically a bad sign when you and me come on every television show. i see it, not just with you. i see with it other surrogates,
3:40 pm
and their explanation for everything is the media is asking us unfair questions. that's what you've been saying. the mideast is focusing on things while your campaign just wants to focus on the issues. >> what i'm saying is, what i was trying to say about the debates. the next two debates no, way hillary clinton doesn't have to answer for e-mails, libya, the clinton foundation. and about the issues. the corporate tax bracket going to be like. >> let me ask you. the issue of stamina has just come up and you suggested she doesn't have enough stamina. a lot of people watching the debate thought she stood upright at the podium for 95 minutes while donald trump seemed to fade. what was your thought about the stamina of the two candidates? >> she did have more stamina and it was ridiculous for trump to say that when the living contradiction of what he was saying was right there. now, she had a bad video. she had stuff that happen. but in a day, in that moment,
3:41 pm
even today. what is he doing? why does he think, he thinks that's a great strategy. i don't know what poll would show that who do you think looked like they had more stamina monday night at the debate? >> i really did think she did. i'm not just saying that because i'm biased against trump. i'm not biased in favor of hillary clinton. i thought she was energetic, brimming with optimism. i thought when she went on the attack against him, she was almost better on the attack than talking about her ideas. i don't think she was that effective in talking about her policies. when she would prosecute him, it was concise and succinct and powerful. when she asked why he wouldn't reveal his tax returns. he reveals that he paid no taxes and he smarted off. >> what emwas if you follow the tax code that minimize what you have to pay within rules and regulations, that's fine. >> she said you pay no taxes and he said that's because i'm
3:42 pm
smart. >> he said that's called being smart. >> i think the literal read of course you're right. in a debate back and forth. >> it was obvious what he meant. he was saying if i pay less amount of taxes ferry business code, that's smart. i'm sure you do too. she had five days off before hand? i was with him. i was with him on thursday. we flew out early in the morning pittsburgh, two stops. philadelphia, i think three stops on. and on and on every day through saturday. he was in virginia at a huge rally on saturday. maybe she was a little more rested. she had five days off. but we are now focusing on who took time off? . >> no, no. she didn't take time off. she went to school. see, donald did not go to school. donald has to go to school if he's going to be president. when america says, he didn't to go debate school. he just showed up. is he going to go to school to be president? he undermines that. >> what are the three biggest things many trump's favor to win
3:43 pm
