6:01 pm
devastating blow and it's one of the places on earth that can least afford something like this. we're going to be talking about that devastation later on in the show including how you can help if you're in a position to do so. we have details on the weekend, friday night, you're thinking ahead about your weekend, but part of your weekend planning does have to include sunday night. here we'll carry the second presidential debate live and without commercials. i should also tell you that the first presidential debate between donald trump and hillary clinton has now been subjected to the bad lip reading treatment. that's bernie sanders, that's not donald trump. but you know what i mean. there's bad lip reading of the first presidential debate. we've got that coming up this hour. but we need to start tonight, of course, with the new red hot relevance of a story that actually -- it feels like it came out a million years ago now because of everything that has happened this week and tonight.
6:02 pm
but the story that is newly hot in terms of its relevance to the presidential campaign is a story that did just come out on monday. monday this week, the associated press published a story about the tv show called "the apprentice." ap spoke with nearly two dozen crew members and producers and former contestants from "the apprentice." some went on record and used their name. some would only speak on the condition of anonymity. speem signed nondisclosure statements. they didn't want to be caught breaking their nondisclosure agreements. but on the record and on background, the ap got a very large number of people who had been associated with that show over the years to talk about how donald trump behaved while he was the star and central figure in that reality tv show. and what they reported was not good. this was the lead from monday's story. quote, in his years as a reality tv boss on "the apprentice,"
6:03 pm
donald trump repeatedly demeaned women with sexist language according to show insiders who said he rated female contestants by the size of their breasts and talk about which once he'd like to have sex with. a former crew member who signed a nondisclosure agreement and asked not to be identified recalled that trump asked male contestants whether they would sleep with a particular female contestant, and then he expressed his own interest. quote, we were in the boardroom one time and he just stopped in the middle and pointed to someone and said, you'd bleep her, wouldn't you? i'd bleep her. come on, wouldn't you? the quote continues. everyone's trying to make him stop talking and the woman is shrinking in her seat. then the allegation here from the associated press from the story on monday was not that this was something that happened in one of the shows that was broadcast and everybody's forgotten about it. it's not like the a prk dug up
6:04 pm
old broadcast material that went down the memory hole. what they're saying in terms of this behavior, this is how donald trump behaved on set during the production of the show. they're saying this stuff never made air, it was never broadcast, but multiple, multiple, multiple witnesses saw it happen on the set of that tv show. now, "the apprentice" started running in 2004. it was broadcast on tv. the show was created by and produced by a tv production company that's called mark burnett productions. i should say even though we're msnbc and we're under the same corporate umbrella as nbc television, i should tell you i have no insider information here. i have no access via corporate connections or anything else to any inside line on this story. the reason that's relevant and the reason everybody now wants the inside line on this story, everybody wants one, again, i do not have one. the reason everybody wants access, not just to what was on
6:05 pm
tv, but to the production material that went into making that show, the behind the scenes stuff, the stuff that was left on the cutting room floor. the reason everybody is looking for that now and gunning for that now is because of the fact that we shouldn't just have to rely on the statements of multiple people who were there and say they saw it happen. we shouldn't have to rely on the statements of the cast members and the people on set in order to check out for ourselves whether these allegations are true. in order to assess whether there really is evidence of donald trump's very bad behavior in a workplace environment. according to the associated press, this story they produced and published on monday, according to them, we should be able to see donald trump's sexist, lewd, borderline harassing workplace behavior because it happened on camera. we should be able to see the tape of it. they didn't broadcast it. but it reportedly exists. quote, in portions of boardroom
6:06 pm
sessions never broadcast, trump frequently would ask male contestants to rate the attractiveness of their female competitors. according to former crew members and contestants. quote, if there was a break in the conversation, he would then look at one of the female cast members saying, you're looking kind of hot today. i love that dress on you. then he'd turn to one of the male ast cast members and say, wouldn't you sleep with her? then everybody would turn and laugh. that was from a crew member who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of a nondisclosure agreement. there would be 10 or 12 cameras rolling and getting that footage, which is why everybody was like, this guy just doesn't care. it feels like a million years ago that the associated press reported this story, but it was the beginning of this week. monday of this week. these allegations go to behavior in the workplace, right? this reality tv show thing, this was the last payroll job that
6:07 pm
donald trump had. he's now running for a new payroll job which would make him the highest paid employee of the american people. right? it would make him the boss in charge of the entire u.s. federal government. and if in is the way that he behaved in the workplace in the past, it feels relevant in terms of we the american people deciding whether or not we want to hire him for his next gig, it feels relevant to know whether this is his workplace comportment. and it is vivid enough to have these quotes from people who were there, from people who also worked in that environment, for people who were in a position to see it, right? this is vivid enough. everyone's trying to make him stop talking. and the woman is shrinking in her seat while trump points at her and said, you'd f her, wouldn't you? i'd f her. come on, wouldn't you? the woman shrinking in her seat. it's vi it's vivid enough to read these allegations. but if these things happened when 10 or 12 cameras were
6:08 pm
running? the if conceivably he's going to be the next president of the united states, any tape of him behaving that way would suddenly seem to be very, very important. it would seem to be of great civic importance. now, when this ap story first came out on monday and since, nbc has referred requests for comment to the production company that actually made the show. they've referred requests for comment to mark burnett productions. when the associated press went to mark burnett productions and asked if they could review the raw footage in question to verify these claims mark burnett productions reportedly did not respond. we've renewed calls to the production company. they wouldn't even give us a no comment. they gave us nothing at all. but if this story, this ap story from monday, if this was lurid and newsworthy and basically hot to the touch on monday, it is now, as of tonight, become
6:09 pm
absolutely scalding because tonight corroborating reporting about donald trump's workplace behavior. "washington post" obtained and published online tonight a tape of donald trump in a different television environment sounding very much like the person these former "apprentice" employees described in this ap story on monday. the tape "the washington post" released tonight is from 2005. it is donald trump in los angeles on his way to tape a scene for a soap opera. he arrives a the set of the soap opera on a bus that has a big vinyl wrap on it for the show "access hollywood." he was on the bust with one of "access hollywood's" hosts and staffers for the shoot. but it seems clear that at least donald trump maybe neither donald trump nor billy bush, the "access hollywood" host he was speaking to, it seems that neither one of them may have been aware that they were being recorded. but they were.
tv-commercial
6:10 pm
they had microphones on. the tape was recording. it's their voices. no one is denying it was them. you heard this tape today. if it rings a bell for you, if hearing donald trump speak this way -- speaks this way, connects for you, resonates for you, it may be that you happened to read that ap story earlier in the week about how donald trump allegedly talked about women on the the set of "the apprentice." so here goes. there will be a lot of bleeps here. >> the thing is -- >> i moved on her, actually. she was down in palm beach. i move pd on her and i failed. >> whoa. >> i'll admit it. she was married. no, nancy. >> gorgeous. >> and i moved on her very heavily. i took her out furniture shopping. she wanted to get furniture. i'll show you where there is nice furniture. i moved on her like a bitch. she was married.
6:11 pm

6:12 pm
>> come on, shorty. >> nice legs, huh? >> oof, get out of the way, honey. go ahead. >> it's always good if you don't fall out of the bus. like ford, gerald ford, remember? >> down below. pull the handle. >> after "the washington post" obtained that video and published it at their website tonight, the clinton campaign put out a two-sentence, 11-word statement in response to the video. this is the clinton campaign response. quote, this is horrific. we cannot allow this man to become president. that was their entire statement. the trump campaign put up their own statement as well. they are not denying this is mr. trump's voice on the tape or that he said any of these things. this was locker room banter, a private conversation that took place many years ago. bill clinton has said far worse to me on the golf course, not even close. i apologize if anyone was
6:13 pm
offended. the trump campaign and the candidate hips mself so far not elaborating on what mr. trump means by bill clinton or if there are tapes of bill clinton talking this way or worse to donald trump. that's what the campaign is alleging but they've done nothing to substantiate that claim. and there is a little bit of a mystery here. an interesting whodunit in terms of how this tape got out there. it doesn't seem all apparent that they knew they were being recorded. in a statement tonight, "access hollywood" tells us they reviewed their extensive library footage and discovered these comments, mr. trump. as for "the washington post," we don't know how they obtained this material or from either of these source, we don't know whether there's more where that came from. but when the story about the apprentice came out monday, donald trump did flatly deny
6:14 pm
that story. the quotes about him rating women by their breast size and saying who he wanted to sleep with and demanding that men tell him in front of specific women if they wanted to sleep with that woman. and saying whether or not he wanted to sleep with that woman, sort of forcing people to engage with him on that subject while the woman sat there and shrunk in her chair. these outlandish, unsubstantiated and totally false claims were fabricated by publicity hungry, opportunistic, disgruntled former employees, and they have no merit whatsoever. and that's a categorical denial. the production company that holds the tapes that would prove whether or not that denial is accurate, they so far are refusing to answer any questions whatsoever. not only are they not releasing any footage they have, they're not answering questions, they're not commenting, they're not even not commenting, they're not even
6:15 pm
saying no comment, just nothing. they're pretending like they don't exist. if the man that republican party has nominated to be president of the united states of america has behaved this way in a workplace environment rjs not just once but a lot over a period of years and there is a record of it, an incontrovertible taped record of it, that's really important information for the american people to have. as we are now deciding whether his next paid workplace environment should be the white house. again, i have no inside line at nbc. all right. in the case of "the apprentice" the production company that created that series is apparently who would have that footage if it exists. today they would not return our call. but that's where we are two days from the next presidential debate with the candidate not denying that it's him in this tape bragging about trying to get a married woman to sleep
6:16 pm
with him, though that's not the phrase he used. also bragging that when you're a star, you can get away with anything. when it comes to women, you can grab them by the crotch, although again that's not the phrase he used. and this is the cover of the "new york daily news" for tomorrow. just going to let this curdle the pixels on your television for just a moment. here's when a newly married trump said he'd like to do to attractive women he meets. grab them by the -- on the bottom there it says now he's trying to blame bill clinton for it. one of the high profile political events that got canceled this weekend because of the storm in the southeast was a planned appearance by donald trump's running mate mike pence in north carolina. he's supposed to campaign tomorrow in north carolina. mike pence, of course, famously calls himself -- his standard political line is that he's a christian, a conservative and a republican, in that order. when this story first broke at "the washington post" mike pence

6:18 pm
the press pool needed to leave. so the press traveling with mike pence, they're all at this restaurant. they're expecting to be able to cover on camera mike pence viewing a hot dog bun that donald trump had previously signed at this restaurant. that's the thing they do. they were going to have a cute on-camera moment with mike pence and the press traveling with him and the donald trump-signed bun. but once this story broke about trump's comments broke on tape, a pence staffer apparently told the traveling press to beat it. quote, presence would no longer be going to view the signed bun and instead would go directly to i had campaign bus. how does a religious right, pious, conservative, family values guy like mike pence handle this new development with his running mate, right? donald trump has confirmed on the record that those were his comments. mike pence will not be able to avoid commenting on this matter by insisting that donald trump never said these things. it's on the record. trump confirmed it himself.
6:19 pm
he did it. he said this stuff. that next campaign event for mike pence tomorrow in north carolina was canceled because the pence campaign booted their reporters today. we don't know when mike pence will first have to comment on these new revelations, but i think it is fair to say we can expect some interesting moral gymnastics on the subject tomorrow from any number of republicans. house speaker paul ryan takes a lot of the same approach to these issues that mike pence does. he has the political misfortune to make his first joint campaign appearance with donald trump tomorrow in his home district in wisconsin. that had been the plan as of today. any questions for the speaker? mr. speaker, mr. trump, could you two please stand together? could we get a picture of the two of you together. would you hold your hands together and raise them up. speaker ryan did you view "the washington post" last night? they are slated to do a campaign

concerned how do they go forward? what does this mean for the party? from my understanding, the head of the rnc was talking to officials there trying to basically figure out what they would do. the mood there is very chaotic. people are nervous about what not only happened today but the fact that we have four more weeks in this election and they worry about whether there are other tapes that will come out. >> just to be clear, we all understand the rnc rules, there is no way for the party to oust him as their nominee because he is formally their nominee and they went through with that. but you're saying that they're in discussions for what to do in case he voluntarily elects to step down, he decides to step down on his own? >> yes. a source told me that in case he voltaiuntarily steps down, they trying to talk about what they're going to do, how they would handle that and whether this is something he would even want to consider. but this person has not talked to anyone within the trump campaign, this is not the rnc
