12:00 pm
sure what was going to happen so we did not want my 11-year-old to watch. >> everything right now is difficult. >> have a great hour. >> have a great conversation saturday morning, parents know what i am talking about out there. good afternoon, we are waiting for hillary clinton here in her rally in detroit. this hour, we expect to see trump in ingrid, pennsylvania. house speaker paul ryan, the highest ranking, not defending trump. he's still not retracking. trump is down by 11 point in a four way match up of 14 points down in a head to head match up and now almost four weeks into
12:01 pm
election day. tracking the latest with house speaker ryan as he's short endorsing donald trump. donald trump is appearing at this hour, this is his first big event since last night's debate. >> paul ryan announced he won't defend for donald trump and lewd comments for women that was made public on friday which was thomas and i were talking about. donald trump fired back on twitter against paul ryan saying paul ryan should spend more time on balancing budget and jobs and illegal immigration and not waste his time on fighting on the republican nominee. >> nbc's jacob rascon is out in the rally for us. >> reporter: the mood is they
12:02 pm
are excited. this is the combative trump that they got last night. just quickly over here, your favorite moment from the debate last night? >> i just thought trump did better yesterday. >> he was more confident and well planned. >> reporter: more confidence and stronger. over here, your favorite moment from the debate and whether you thought he did better last night. >> i didn't like it. i like the part that he's goishg to jail. i really liked that. i think i liked when they asked what did you like from each candidate, at least that was positive. >> reporter: are we getting too in the gutter here. >> what does he do going forward keep on attacking or what? >> i guess look at the facts and do whatever he has to do.
12:03 pm
>> reporter: thank you very much, one more over here. whatere your favorite moment in the debate? >> he's a true sailor and she's not. >> reporter: did you think he's better this time compares to last time? >> i definitely think he did better. >> reporter: nine out of ten will tell me this is the trump that they really want and could win. every once in a while maybe one and ten would say no, the way he was going nup in the polls was when he was more disciplined and not in attack mode like you heard from one of these supporters. >> jacob, can i ask about mike pence because last night at the debate, donald trump seems to break with his position on syria and there were reports over the weekend that pence maybe considering leaving the ticket, what's the latest today from the running mate? >> reporter: mike pence himself, he just held a rally, saying that the report of him leaving
12:04 pm
was nonsense. he said donald trump is a fighter and it takes a big boy to step up to the plate and say you're sorry. in mike pence's words that that's what donald trump did last. igt aand it appears that he for it for the long hall. >> lets switch over to the clinton campaign now. kasie hunt is there for us this am a afternoon. give us a sense of what's happening there from last night and newly released e-mails from pode podesta. >> first of all, the news looas night after the debate was a party atmosphere among staffs that felt like she really came through on stage last night.
12:05 pm
this morning, initially there was a sense that donald trump clearly was the aggressor and seems like he's going to go forward. what's happening with paul ryan saying he's not going to go out there to defend trump. it is something that quite frankly the clinton campaign is very happy, of the focus of the news today. i think that's something that the clinton campaign views positively, there are potentially some hurdles for them to still to come and drip from wiki leaks from these e-mails and the second round of john podesto's e-mails is coming out today.
12:06 pm
>> and some concerns over debbie wasserman sholts. ch a couple of other e-mails, i was entertained by one from -- >> yeah, that was my favorite as well. who among us have not had that experience, right? >> somebody said in tust, subject line from two weeks ago and it is not relevant now.
12:07 pm
we know fiphillipe, don't we? >> we have been talking about the huge news out of capitol hill today. paul ryan says he will not defend donald trump. he says he's focusing on keeping the house. kelly o'donell is cover thing t story for us, she's south on the pence bus right now and they just left charlotte. talk to me o f the bomb shell this morning. i am sure you are speaking to all kinds of folks, any reaction from folks on the hill? >> reporter: well, i have been talking to a lot of republicans and they would engage it differently than i think as some of the public is viewing are. paul ryan was reluctant to endorse donald trump. he was cutting a path to say he and others in the house need to do their first job which is try to protect their majority in the house and to the extent they can help senators who are running to
12:08 pm
keep the republican majority, that's their focus. now, of course, in just about any other campaign year, there would be a full embrace of the top of the ticket. there would be a desire to see the candidate with various congressional grounds in the country. paul ryan is not changing his position but he works by phone and conference call which is the regular method that all republicans use to touch base when they are not in washington to talk about current events that are affecting the party and the race. that's why this is happening today. of course, there was a need for this kind of conference call after the last couple of days that the trump campaign has endured. now, one of the bright response for this republican house is the bus belonging to the candidate which we are riding along and that's mike pence. he has been a republican house member for a dozen years. donald trump does not.
12:09 pm
so part of what we are seeing is when there is an absence of long time relationships between a candidate and other officer holders, when the going gets tough, there is less likelihood of people standing by that candidate who's in trouble. some of that is in place here. what you have is a case of republicans very concerned of the damage done by the recordings and how office holders around the country have responded and most concerned about how are voters taking this all in. will they stick with republicans, will they lose the senate or even the house? some argued that it could be in play now. that's why what is happening today, it is about first thing first if you are speaker of the house and trying to protect that majority and trying to help your candidates and that's what we are seeing playing out today as where he on the bus in north carolina following mike pence who's been in a hot seat himself.
12:10 pm
he's describing his new position that he's in in a high wire act without a net as he's explaining donald trump without any condoning remarks of those controversial defense. >> you are on your way where now? >> we are between charlotte and fletcher. we got a couple of hours on the bus here, i love a good bus ride and even riding backward and talking to you live. this is politics in the last 30 days >> kelly o'donell, thank you very much. the weather is looking nice outside after the hurricane. for more on the impact of congress of that 2005 trump tape that came out that everybody is talk ugh about and the debate last night. i want to bring in germajeremy s and shane, gentlemen, thank you for being with us. >> sure >> as our own kelly o'donell
12:11 pm
walked us through. paul ryan is not going to defend him and campaigning for him, how big of a deal is this and is there a chance , that the house goes democrat? >> well, there is a greater chance than there was on friday morning. i think that you have seen that that panic in the republican party that they could indeed lose the house and really increase over the last 48 hours or so. while it is quite a long shot ski still, it is one that's openly discussed. paul ryan would not be reacting the way he did if he did not have a real fear, at least possible. look at his action and they speak volumes. >> 49% of voters want democrats
12:12 pm
in power. those are all voters that were asking. what are you hearing, do you think republicans are concerned about the lost, it is the same question that i asked jeremy but we are at that point yet? >> there are a couple key indicators that both are looking for and clinton is hitting them in the new nbc survey. >> if she's ahead by double digit nationally, that's lifting all kinds of races and potentially in scary territory, we'll know a lot more after the next 48 hours. >> republicans are going in the field. they saw the debate and they saw the tape break on friday and they'll get opinions from voters all across the country and tomorrow, wednesday, they'll have a sense of what does this new landscape looks like, when you hear things about pie i don't know and you see the comments of the weekend drove the republicans leading donald trump, you know the landscape has changed. >> jason miller, trump's adviser
12:13 pm
tweeted about this. saying nothing has changed, mr. trump's campaign has always been powered by a grass root movement and not washington. >> we watched the trump's tweet earlier. thanks for nothing, they are the outside candidate. given everything that's happened over the past three days since friday of the tape. where are we at? >> jason miller is absolutely right. the trump's campaign is not powered by washington and through the extent that the national committee has not helped donald trump's campaign. that's illegally piend biebindi agreement that the rnc cannot tear up. they are really stuck with him fchlt you look at trump's performance in the debate last night, he's not interested in going downey sort of middle road here. his job last night as he saw it
12:14 pm
was to throw out red meat to the hardest hard core to his supporters and that's what he did. talking about sidney blumenthal and benghazi and the people he need to win the election. this is a hunker down moment. >> shane, did you hear any changing moment last night? >> donald trump is appealing to the republican base and part of the republican base that made him the nominee. this is the challenge for the republican party leadership. their voters are still with donald trump whether they denounced him or distanced themselves from him, this is what you are hearing and what you are seeing in the polls. republicans are still supportive of donald trump. the problem is there not enough voters to win this fall, not just at the presidential level but in senate races and house races. that's why there is this
12:15 pm
widespread panic going on. >> i feel like we are in a different place. it is landowner 3:00. we are in a different place than we were on saturday. on saturday, there were a cascade of people abandoning trump over the tape and today t it is cascade, all right, he did already last night. >> he compeexceeded small expectations for him to perform at a competent level. you have that and combined with the fact that people are really lookg for anything in his performance to reassure them and anything to give them a little bit of satisfaction so they would not bolt. he did that. he turned in a pretty well, well mannered and very even healed for the most part performance. i think he did seem rattled at a few occasions but he did not
12:16 pm
blow himself up on stage and that's what a lot of people were expecting him to do. i don't think he redeemed himself but he stopped the bleeding to a large extent. >> new york times, jeremy peters. thank you guys for being here. >> thank you. >> we have a report on the debate. donald trump once again said he does not know whether russia is trying to hack the u.s. election, take a listen. >> i don't know putin, i think it would be great if we get along russia because we can fight isis together. i notice any time anything wrong happens, they like to say the russians are doing the hacking. or maybe there is no hacking. they always blame russia. the reason they blame russia because they think they're trying to tarnish me on russia. >> he's been briefed with all of
12:17 pm
this. bob, good to see you. so he has had briefings. these are things that every presidential candidate would go through. >> well, if you look at the time line, kate, he was bereariefed august 17th. we have seen it. of course, on friday, where the office of the director of national intelligence the department of homeland security comes out say they have high confidence of russia and he goes on with the debate and says he does not know that. in addition, to his own briefing we are told that there has been addition nall briefing of staff, and the clinton campaign getting access of the latest
12:18 pm
intelligence, what we are seeing now in the intelligence community is real anger. one official told us today that what was said last night by trump was quote "a willful misreputation." >> so anger at trump for mischaracterizing things. >> correct. >> it goes back to the manner in which the u.s. has been pursuing this. this is not just guess work. this is a high, high priority. so as a result of this priority by the time he gets his first briefing, again, we have seen these materials, it is a figure complete and it was dealt with in terms of the forensics, looking for signatures and things like electronic eavesdroppi eavesdropping. it was a high confidence that they had over the past two or
12:19 pm
three or four months that it is the russians. >> he's mischaracterizing the briefing that he's gotten. >> that's what u.s. intelligence is telling us. >> we mentioned hillary clinton making her first appearance from last night's debate. lets listen in. >> thank you very much, wow. >> sounds like we got some wa e wayn waynes' state warriors here today. i am so excited and so thrilled to be here. [ cheers ] did anybody see that debate last night?
12:20 pm
[ applause ] [ cheers ] >> well, you never saw anything like that before. it is great to be here with so many wonderful officials, i want to thank them, i know they have been out to talk with you, i appreciate the introduction that jim allen gave me and i am proud to be introduced by the steel workers. i want to thank your senator and gary peters. your members of congress, john conyers and sandy levin. i want to thank your wonderful mayor.
12:21 pm
i want to thank county executive warren evans. it is exciting to be here for so many reasons to be back here in detroit and to be in wayne state. president obama was pretty accurate when he was talking about how detroit is coming back. [ cheers ] that's thanks to a lot of people. and it is going to really depend on the young people of this university and this city to build al future that we can all not only be proud of but be apart of. i will tell you this, if i am so fortunate enough to be your president, come next january, i will be your partner. [ cheers ] [ applause ]
12:22 pm
whether or not i get that chance really depends on all of you and we are coming up to an important day. tomorrow, october 11th, it is the last day to register to vote in michigan. so i am hoping that all of you either are registered or you will before the deadline tomorrow and we have people all over the crowd with clipboards. we got clipboards who can help you register to vote. if you are registered and you have friends and family who are not, i need you to convince them to register, go to their local clerk office. if you are not sure or moved recently or you want to make sure, go to iwillvote.com. [ cheers ] >> it is amazing.
12:23 pm
you can put your name in and address to make sure you are registered. please do that. if you have an absentee ballot sitting at home, i hope you will fill it out and mail it in right away. don't put it off. there are a lot of important races down ballot as well. that's how we are going to win by the biggest turn out that we have seen in a really, really long time. [ cheers ] [ applause ] the reason why it is going to be a big turn out is people really know what's at stake at this election. they are concerned as you heard jim says the differences between me and my opponent are pretty clear. [ crowd booing ] to paraphrase my friend,
12:24 pm
michelle obama, one of us went high and one of us went low. [ applause ] [ cheers ] and i will tell ya, what's exciting to me is that we are getting more and more support and not just from democrats but from independence and republicans. [ cheers ] >> now, i believe you deserve something to vote for and not just something to vote against. so, last night when i got a chance, i tried to speak directly to the questions that are on people's minds and to share my vision of what we can do together. [ crowd chanting, hillary,
12:25 pm
hillary, hillary ] >> now, i will tell you what, donald trump spent his time attacking when he should have been apologizing. [ applause ] [ cheers ] >> now, there are a lot of things he should have apologize for, right? on friday, the whole world heard him talking about the terrible way he treats women. and last night when he was pressed about how he behaves, he just double down on his excuse
12:26 pm
that hst loit is locker room ba. women and men across america know it is a really bad excuse for behaving badly and mistreating people. now, i got to tell you though, we have seen this kind of behavior all through the campaign from my opponent. unfortunately, some people don't want to face it but here is a man who has insulted, not just women but african-americans, latinos, people with disabilities, muslims, pows and so many more.
12:27 pm
[ cheers ] you know -- i do hope somebody follows that gentleman and stages an intervention, he clearly has not been following this election very closely. but, hey, folks, we now know who donald trump is but the question is for us is who are we, right? i would argue we are not who he is. [ applause ] here in america, we are taught and we should respect each
12:28 pm
other. >> yeah! >> lift each other up, celebrate our diversity, that's the country that i know and love and that's the country that this generation of young people are going to make even stronger or more open and more tolerant. [ applause ] i believe that we can do this. "stronger together" is not just a slogan for me, it is a blueprint for our future. i am closing my campaign the way i started my career fighting for kids in families to make sure that every single person in this country has a chance to go as
12:29 pm
far as your heart works and your talent will take you. [ applause ] you see i believe the american dream is big enough for everybody. [ applause ] >> that's been the cause of my life. that'll be the mission of my presidency. working to make your life better, investingn you and focusing on those kitchen table issues that keep families up at night. you know what they are, the cost of college, the cost of child care. >> we are listening to hillary clinton speak ing in detroit. you heard her talking about last night asking if anybody saw it. you never saw anything like that before. she quoted michelle obama again
12:30 pm
just as she daid last night saying one of us went high and one of us went low and talked about donald trump excuses for the tape that came out on friday niepg night. joining me now is our senior adviser is boris. you have been listening so i will let you respond to her. what she just said is donald trump doubled down on excuses o f locker room talk of this tape that came out on friday with ""access hollywood," if i can, i want to play a section of last night. this was when anderson coopers doub pressing down on your candidate. >> are you saying what you said on that bus 11 years ago that you did not kiss women without consent or groped them without
12:31 pm
consent? >> i have great respect for women, nobody has more respect than i do. >> frankly, you hear these things. i was embarrassed by it. >> satisfied with the way he answered that? >> of course, within seconds, he said i absolutely did not >> i thought we got to that point. >> he does say and women have respect for me and i will tell you no, i have not are the final words of that. >> apologies, i think we cut-off the tape but that was supposed to be there. >> was that enough for him to sort of -- it took him several questions for him to say no, i have not. >> she was addressed first. he specifically, as you just read that he in no way made those actions or condone those actions. i think it is very clear there.
12:32 pm
she does not have a stand on it as far as making excuses. >> which was one of the big lines when donald trump came back. >> good old abe does not lie like you do. there is a lot of information coming out today and wiki leaks information. hillary clinton in a speech telling $25,000 that terrorism is not a threat to our nation. so this is a person who cannot help herself from lies. she cannot stop herself from lying and continuously lying. >> you mentioned vladimir putin, we are just reporting our investigative unit looking at what trump said last night about russians being behind the recent hacks and donald trump says there is no proof of that and we don't know if the russians are
12:33 pm
behind it. but he's been briefed and they looked at some of the off the record, they looked at papers that he was shown of the documents that he was shown that u.s. intelligence have investigated where these leaks came from and seen links to russia. they put out a justice on friday, russia, the russian government is behind this. >> noshe's appointed boo i the president and she works for the president. she's a lifelong democrat. >> the staff members that give these briefings that's toiling at the department of justice trying to figure out who was behind these leaks. why would donald trump not acknowledge that? >> as far as the briefings go, i believe that those people did not commit a felony by exposing
12:34 pm
and opening up where those briefings are because those are supposed to be confidential that should not be out there in public before and including on the air and on this channel that you are not supposed to be discussing any specifics of those briefings so i am not going to do so as well. >> would you say donald trump is correct last night when he said we don't know who's behind these hacks. >> also, there is a broadening, sort of an overall behind of all the acts. we don't have no idea, that's part of what donald trump was saying. to say that because one hack or maybe one or two hacks were, and the russians were behind it does not mean that the wiki leaks won as well. what's more important is not
tv-commercial
12:35 pm
who's behind the hack. it is what's in the information and we have to go through it. when you do, you see clearly that hillary clinton is the person that we know her to be. she's a two face person and she lies to the american people and looks down and think that we are deplorable and what she said about bernie sanders supporters and she lied about policies and trade and foreign relations and terrorists. how can we trust her? >> the our political unit is going through 3,000 or 4,000 e-mails. the clinton campaign is out today with a series of testimonials and i want to play a clip. >> i fought for my country in iraq and i have been a republican all my life, but i am the father of three girls and i capt stand to hear donald trump calling women pigs, dogs a, and
12:36 pm
bimbos, i want my girls to grow up strong and proud in a nation that they are respected. donald trump's america is not the country that i am fighting for. >> the campaign tends to say, well, they're the power elites and they're the mainstream and outsiders. how do you respond to voters like that and to former republican voters who cannot see a way to vote for you. >> well, let me address it. paul ryan's concern, and i have respect for speaker ryan. it took a long time for him to come out and support and there were a lot of back and forth and he finally did and he's not going to appear at events of donald trump so he has not done so far so nothing is going to change. and that gentleman, i have no idea who he is, he's allowing
12:37 pm
himself to be used for the tape for hillary clinton. >> if i were the clinton's i would not use that word in an ad, bimbo. >> she did not bully or shame women as she did in the '90s including the four women that were there. >> one of those women that were there, he called a loser with chris matthews, not that long ago. >> that was apart of the discussions with chris smith matth ma matthews. >> four of these women, they are more out there. women who have said that -- >> are you bringing more of them out? >> this campaign is about the messenger and we are about the nag nall security and the economy. >> it is about the message but that video we showed was a
12:38 pm
surprise of the pool of the people that covered donald trump. we thought we are going to watch some debrat prep. right to call that a stunt. >> i think bringing up alicia machado is a stunt and mark cuban is a stunt. >> it is not a stunt, it is doing something that the clintons have denied them and giving them a voice and that's what donald trump did and he will continue to do once he's president and giving everybody in this country a boris, thank you for being here. >> thank you. >> coming up, was her explanation sufficient, i will post t to one of her supporters when we come back. >> a live shot in pennsylvania as we wait for donald trump to take the stage. this is her first campaign since the debate, we'll certainly bring that to you live. stay with us.

last night when he was pressed about how he behaves, he just doubled down on his excuse that it is just locker room banter. well, i will tell you what, women and men across america know that it is just a real weak excuse for behaving badly and mistreating people. >> that was hillary clinton just moments ago in detroit, michigan at her first campaign event after last night's debate. with e a we are expecting donald trump to come out. for more on what we can expect for both candidates and reactions to last night debate. i want to bring in bill burton, the white house's press secretary. bill, nice to see you again. >> good to see you, too.

russian government is trying to have an influence on this election. all these documents and wiki leaks have sehown in the past that documents they leaked have been altered. in this case, it is not to help clinton but it is to harm her. you have to love the trump surrogate was on just before me denied that reality. after donald trump sat through classified briefing after the secretary jeh johnson and the non political piece of it concluded that this was russia trying to interfere with our elections, they just deny the reality. there are thing that is i s tha your colleague would say off camera that you would not say on camera. there are things that i would not say to my friends privately that i would not say in a public setting. when hillary clinton was compared over abraham lincoln, she was making that case. keep in mind, we are talking
12:45 pm
about a small segment of a much longer speech and a longer conversation and with out all that contact, it is hard to judge whether or not, well, anything about this. this is a snippe that the russian government wanted you to see and us talking about it right now and they're mission accomplished frankly. >> you heard this morning of donald trump more prepared than the first debate. did he have a good night? >> i think if he's trying to appeal to the small group of people that's supporting him, yes, he had an excellent night. he's trending in the wrong direction. he's behind by a lot and he's moving down in the polls and he need to reach out to people who don't currently support him. if he thought going out there and talking about bill clinton and e-mails and all those things
12:46 pm
would somehow helping him reaching out to the college educated and rwomen voters in te suburbs that he does not currently have, he's wrong. they want to talk about what's important in their lives and economy and education and environment. donald trump could not get there. he looked lieke a sputtering angry man and that does not appeal to voters that he does not and probably are not right now. >> what's the plate for hillary clinton right now? you been through this and the obama administration, she just mentioned the tape on friday and talked about it on stage in destroy and she continues to go there and she's way ahead in the new polls this afternoon and how does she ride it tall way for the next four weeks. >> i don't think that's her path of victory. i think she ought to talk about it.
