>> it's an extraordinary statement, and you go back to earlier in the campaign, stephanie, when he talked about he's not a hero. he was a prisoner of war. i don't like the people who were -- who were captured. one of john mccain's fellow prisoners of war who became ultimately a united states senator from alabama in captivity, captain injury jerem denton, stepping off the plane in uniform, he said we are honored to have had the opportunity to serve our country under difficult circumstances. we are profoundly grateful to our commander in chief and to our nation for this day. god bless america. and he's representative of the character of the mant that includes the character of john mccain. everybody knows that john mccain is a hero, but they don't necessarily know why he is a
6:01 am
hero. and the reason that he is a hero was because his father was the commander in chief of american forces in the pacific. john mccain was navy royalty. he was so badly injured he was not expected to survive. he was offered early release by the vietnamese, which would have given them a significant propaganda victory, and mccain said no. the code of conduct requires prisoners of war to be released in the order that they are captured, and what john mccain functionally did is rather than dishonor himself, the code of conduct, the united states navy, he made an affirmative decision to die, to die in prison than to break that code, and when he said no, he was tortured and he was abused in ways that are
6:02 am
beyond the imagination for the next 5 1/2 years. and now donald trump says he wouldn't want to be in the foxhole with a guy like john mccain, i think it's important to remember that donald trump said for him avoiding the clap when he was partying in studio 54, that was his equivalent of vietnam. it is an extraordinary statement, and john mccain is exactly the person you want to have in a foxhole with you, and you can ask a score of american heroes about that. >> is donald trump telling the truth when he says john mccain begged donald for his support earlier this year? >> well, i don't know what any conversations were, stephanie, but i do know john mccain, and i'll tell you this much, john mccain doesn't beg anyone for anything. >> theif donald trump does win, what happens to guys like paul ryan and john mccain? can they ever work together? >> well, look, first off, a
6:03 am
rudimentary understanding of american civics is this, that these are co-equal branches of government. the speaker of the house is a constitutional officer elected by the house. he doesn't serve as an aide at the pleasure of the president. secondly, donald trump is not going to be elected president of the united states. republican poll numbers are tanking all over the country. suddenly states like utah and georgia are coming into play. this is going to be a blowout election because donald trump has repeatedly with his own behavior demonstrated an incapacity to hold the office of president of the united states at an intellectual, at a mental, and at a moral level. and so when this race is settled, the republican party's going to have a lot of soul searching to do. >> okay. well, if you look at "the wall
6:04 am
street journal's" most recent poll, it's got donald trump down 9. now he's saying he's going unshackled. what does that -- >> right. >> -- even mean especially given that you've just talked about his temperament and how fit he'd be to be the president? >> look, i think it's a -- i think it's a signal of desperation in the campaign, and he is advised by people who largely come out of the world of clinton conspiracy theories and they've made a decision that they want to run their fantasy campaign targeting the clintons in the way that they are. at the end of world war ii the japanese launched camicazi attacks using fully loaded manned aircraft with bombs and gasoline to fly into and crash into allied planes, into american ships. those attacks were lethal. they caused damage. they caused casualties. about 20% of them were successful in hitting their
6:05 am
targets, but they didn't affect or alter the strategic outcome of the war and they were fundamentally made because they were losing the war and they were by definition, by definition they were acts of profound desperation. so i think that as these poll numbers consolidate at 9, 10, 11, as you are consistently seeing donald trump below 40%, as you see previously rock solid red states turn purple and then blue, the cycle and spiral of desperation will become more pronounced. >> the spiral of desperation as you call it, could this lead to people being so disgusted with the election that they won't go out and vote? because there is this republican strategy saying if we depress turnout so much, our base is simply bigger than theirs, we will win? >> i -- i think that, in fact, that is not true, the notion that our base is bigger than
6:06 am
theirs. on an arithmetic and demographic basis, a delivered strategy to depress turnout hoping for that outcome simply won't work in a presidential campaign. the democrats have very sophisticated, very elaborate campaign strategies to badger, harass, and turn out their voters. democratic voters will be turning out to the polls, and while this race is a grotesquery, it is a stain on our civic life and it is something the country will have to recover from, voters are not going to not turn out in such numbers that it alters the outcome of the race in favor of a candidate who's now behind 9, 10 points and has no conceivable path to the 270 electoral votes necessary for victory. >> steve, thank you so much for joining me this morning. steve schmidt. >> you bet. thank you, stephanie.
6:07 am
great to be with you. >> safe travels. donald trump, he's also blasting hillary clinton following the latest batch of e-mails released by wikileaks. trump says they shoko lugs betwe -- show collusion. very little pickup by the dishonest media of incredible information provided by wikileaks, so dishonest, rigged system. we should point out that the alleged e-mails have not been authenticated by nbc news. nbc's kristen welker is covering the clinton campaign. what is this all about and what is the clinton campaign saying? >> reporter: well, look, wikileaks has now dumped a number of batches of e-mails purportedly sent and received by campaign chairman john podesta. one of the recent e-mails that's raising some eyebrows, steph, was dated back in may of 2015 written by clinton campaign spokesperson brian fallon who used to work at the d.o.j.
6:08 am
in that e-mail fallon talks about the fact that he has been in touch with the justice department where he used to work about lawsuits regarding secretary clinton's e-mails. i'll read you that e-mail and then do a little bit of analysis on the other side, steph. the e-mail says d.o.j. folks inform me there is a status hearing in the case. now a couple of important things to point out. those laws were public information and that e-mail was written two months before the fbi opened its investigation. the clinton campaign, again, not authenticating the voracity of those e-mails, but campaign chairman john podesta spoke to reporters aboard secretary clinton's campaign plane last night and said that russia is behind these hacks. he said the fbi is now investigating, and then he went a step further and said he believes that a top trump official had advanced warning about this latest round of hacks and that effectively this latest round of hacks were used to try and divert attention away from the 2005 audio tape in which
6:09 am
trump makes lewd comments about women. so the clinton campaign pushing back very hard against this. there's, of course, no proof that russia and the trump campaign are actually working together, however, the u.s. government has said it believes russia is behind the hacks. that is something that russia continues to deny. bottom line here, this is an ongoing political issue for secretary clinton. we expect to get another 1,000 e-mails today. wikileaks vowing to release more e-mails almost on a daily basis from now until election day. of course, this comes as secretary clinton has opened up a pretty significant lead in the polls. today she heads out west to colorado and nevada, steph. >> did anything illegal happen here though? in terms of the e-mails, is there anything in there illegal? >> reporter: i don't think that anyone is alleging there's anything illegal, and i think what you heard donald trump talk about on the stump in the case that he's trying to make is that this is the typical case of
6:10 am
washington coziness, right? this is what he's been accusing secretary clinton of from the start, that there are conflicts of interest, that lines get blurred. effectively feeding into one of secretary clinton's biggest problems, which is that a number of voters still say they can't trust her. so that is the strategy on the part of the trump campaign and, again, the clinton campaign's push back is to not authenticate the e-mails but instead to say that wikileaks is being weaponized effectively by the russians. now, again, john podesta saying that the fbi is investigating so it remains to be seen exactly who is behind this and how many players are involved. steph. >> all right. thank you. our own kristen welker. we're going to take a break. when we come back, the trump surrogate, you've got to see this. he's under fire for his answer to this question from my colleague, chris hays. >> if a tape came out with donald trump saying that, saying i really like to rape women, you would continue to endorse him? red 97set! r7! did you say 97?
6:11 am
yes. you know, that reminds me of geo's 97% customer satisfaction rating. 97%? helped by geico's fast and friendly claims service. huh... oh yeah, baby. geico's as fast and friendlys it gets. woo! geico. expect great savings and a whollot more. how do we measure greatness in americ it's measured by what we do for r chilen. it why as president i'll invest in our schools. in college that leads to opportunities... not debt. and an economy where every young american can find a job that let'shem start a family of their own. i've spent my life fighting for kids and families. i want our success to be measured by theirs. i'm hillary clton and approve this message.
6:12 am
we've been hearing so much about how you're aigital company, so you can s our confusion. ge is an industrial company that actually builds world-changing machines. machines that can also communicate digitally. like robots. did you build th robot? that's not a robot, that's my coworker earl. he builds jet engines with his human hands. what about that robot? that is a vending machine, cky. johngive him a dollar.
6:13 am
6:14 am
if you are elected president you're going to need mccain and you're going to need ryan. you're going to need these guys. >> they'll be there. they'll be there. i would think that ryan maybe wouldn't be there. maybe he'll be in a different position. >> might not have votes but he's got confidence. donald trump making a bold prediction about house speaker paul ryan's future as trump throws off his shackles and goes on a full on attack as the gop descends into civil war. i want to bring in charlie sykes who's also part of the never trump movement. charlie, if trump is elected, can you imagine paul ryan working with president trump? >> well, no. first of all, i can't imagine donald trump being elected at this point. i think steve schmidt was absolutely right about that.
6:15 am
what does he mean when he says he's unshackled? does it mean that he loses inner praise. he's going full breitbart? there are two things that are happening. he is at war with the speaker of the house. i have known paul ryan for 20 years. he is the most thoughtful, decent, effective leader the republican party has. he's one of the intellectual leaders of the conservative movement. here you have donald trump in full out war against this man. i mean, we are -- we are way south of the worst case scenario here for republicans and conservatives. >> then, charlie, how does the gop survive this? we're now seeing reince back on board on the team. what's the future hold? >> by the way, that's a very interesting question because reince priebus and paul ryan are very, very good friends. what's reince priebus going to do?
6:16 am
is he going to stand by and watch donald trump throw -- throw paul ryan under the bus? look, donald trump has made the decision he and steve bannon made the decision if they're going to lose, they're going to lose as ugly as possible. they talk about burning it down. apparently that means burning down the republican party. that means if he's going to lose, he's okay with taking down the majority of the party. this is a -- it's hard to over state what's happening here, the meltdown, or the reckoning that will have to come after this election is over. >> charlie, this takes me to my exact next question. you talk about burning down the house. i want to share, one trump supporter took it one step further talking revolution at a pence event last night. take a look. >> for my personally, if hillary clinton gets in, i myself, i'm ready for a revolution because we can't have her in. >> yeah, you don't -- don't say that. >> but i'm just saying it. no, you know, i'm like trump. you know, i might not speak for
6:17 am
people here. don't let it stand in the truth. >> there's a revolution coming november the 8th. >> i want you to compare this to the key moment with john mccain in 2008. >> i can't trust obama. i have read about him and he's not -- he's not -- he's a -- he's an -- >> no? >> no? >> no, ma'am. he's a decent, family man, a citizen that i happen to have disagreements with. >> mike pence, the vp candidate handled it well. he, too, said no, ma'am. but compare this to donald trump who seems to be fueling this type of fury. >> yeah, well, class and graciousness is so last decade, right? one of the things i think we all ought to be concerned about on either political party is what does happen after this election. will the trump folks actually try to de-legitimize the election?
6:18 am
are they already trying to plant the seeds that somehow it is rigged, it is stolen, we don't have to actually respect the outcome? i am not a hillary clinton fan, but the reality is that our constitutional system of government needs to operate with the consent and the trust of the governed. donald trump has blown down so many of the norms, so many of the standards. this is just the last one. and i think we ought to be concerned about it. but, of course, here's the thing. donald trump does not want to acknowledge and may never acknowledge that this is on him, that he broke it, he owns it. if he goes down, it is -- it is his personal responsibility and he ought to be held accountable. he's looking for someone else to blame, whether it's paul ryan, john mccain or the mainstream media. frankly, you ought to look in the mirror. >> charlie, i want to share something that took me last night. your reaction to comments made by a republican congressman, here's what he said last night to chris hayes. >> if a tape came out with donald trump saying that, saying i really like to rape women, you
6:19 am
would continue to endorse him? >> again, it would -- i -- i'd -- that would be bad and i would have to consider -- i'd consider it. >> okay. blake later qualified it saying it was an unfair hypothetical question. for me, this is an oh, my god. saying don't follow your brother jumping off a bridge. will these trump supporters go anywhere? is donald trump continuing to push them? >> this is one of the things that i think is most depressing for me as a conservative. i have a fellow talk show host up in the green bay area who opened up the phone lines. one caller after another rationalized and justified donald trump's behavior. and i think this is one thing that we have to see is the extent to which donald trump actually corrupts his supporters, that it's not just who donald trump is and what his character is but what he is leading people to accept and to say. you know, that is a cringe worthy moment and it's an indication, though, of what
6:20 am
donald trump could potentially do not just to the conservative movement and to republicans but to the culture as a whole. >> has he corrupted ben carson? this is a guy who rose to prominence as a man of faith who yesterday said, oh, it's locker room talk. we've all heard this. that doesn't sound like the ben carson we know. >> you know -- you know -- and i have to say, you know, as i look around the number of really fundamentally decent people, and i know they're decent people, you know, throughout the country, i know that ben carson is a fundamentally decent person, how did we get here? what is donald trump doing? what are we willing to surrender? what are we willing to compromise for this man? and i really hope that there's kind of a moral reckoning that people go, okay, okay, i get the supreme court. i get that we don't like hillary clinton, but are we going to start to say those things, rationalize those things, enable that kind of behavior? and so when you see someone like ben carson, i would hope that people would go, whoa.
6:21 am
okay, so ben carson now talking about how somehow the problem is that we haven't heard enough vulgar talk? by the way, stephanie, we don't talk that way in locker rooms. that doesn't happen. we are not all like that. >> i sure hope not, charlie. thank you so much for joining me this morning. charlie sykes. >> thank you. up next, new polls show hillary clinton strengthening her lead over donald trump. will donald's new unshackled campaign help him recover. was he ever really shackled to begin with? trump seems to think so. >> i don't think i'm that outspoken to be honest with you, bill. >> oh, come on. >> no, i don't think i am. >> sure you are. >> i think i've been very nice. here... or here. today, there's a new option. a tens device with high aleintensitpowerrapy. that uses technology once only available in docrs' offices. its wireless remote lets you ntrol the intensity. and helps you get back to thin like... this... this.. or this. and back tobeing your. introducg new aleve direct thera.

6:26 am
like this so go and register. make sure you get out and vote november 28th. >> remember, it's november 8th. on that note, a new nbc news/wall street journal poll shows donald trump trailing badly with less than a month to go. in a four-way race clinton leads trump by 9. in a head-to-head race she leads him by 10. i want to put that all in perspective. no modern american presidential candidate has ever won the white house after being that far behind so late in the election, but put into perspective, we've never had a candidate quite like mr. trump. carrie dent is nbc's political editor. carrie, walk us through these polls. >> reporter: this is showing the trend line even before the release of the 2005 tape. this sums up the hit he seems to have taken over the last, say, week or two. this poll was in the field on saturday, sunday and monday.
6:27 am
that's important because saturday and sunday were the days of that really intense fallout from that trump audiotape, him talking about his treatment of women. republicans were disavowing him in droves, particularly on saturday. the final day of the poll was on monday. that was after the sunday night debate of performance that was reviewed fairly well by republicans for donald trump. still, the overall number here is trump 9 points down in a four-way race. that is a deep, deep hole for him to be in certainly. >> but let's stay on that because many argued he was in a free fall on sunday with gop defections. if you actually break down these poll numbers, hillary clinton had a much bigger lead over the weekend after that donald trump tape was leaked and then after the debate donald did make up some ground. >> well, a couple things that we'll note here. one, we're polling at an extremely volatile time so there is fluctuation. if you're looking at the numbers from monday, that's a smaller sample size so that margin of error for the numbers alone is going to be higher.
6:28 am
here's what we saw inside the numbers that makes us confident that donald trump did a little bit better after that sunday night performance. republicans came home. on the earlier days of the polling 67% of republicans said they wanted down ballot candidates to still embrace him. that's a big number. 2/3 of republicans were still saying they wanted their local house or senate candidates not to disavow trump. on the monday polling alone that number went up to 83%. we saw a lot more republicans coalescing and trump as their nominee even as his national top line number was going down. republicans seemed to review that debate performance well, at least be more willing to come home, and that's probably the thing for trump-loving republicans to be happy about in this poll. it looks like among the gop voters he seems to have coalesced his support after a pause or maybe some doubts certainly on saturday and sunday. >> carrie, yesterday al gore was
6:29 am
in florida talking about the risk of a third party vote. utah poll, this is a conservative state. >> absolutely. this is a state that's been on reporter's radar and analyst's radar for a while. part of the issue is there's a huge mormon community. donald trump with his comments about faith, about women have been very, very taken in a very negative way within that community. another thing that's of course worth noting, evan mcmullen, you saw that name on that poll. he's a third party candidate, byu, hometown hero pulling a lot of support doing well and that's pulling donald trump's support down. remember also, mitt romney, favorite son of utah, been at war a bit with donald trump. that's certainly something that's being reflected in the poll numbers we're seeing in utah. >> thanks, carrie. we're going to stay on polls. coming up, 27 days away from the election. voting has actually begun in the important swing state of ohio. we're going to take you there a the first buckeyes are casting their ballot. uff from thaairlin.

early voting began last hour in the state of ohio, and a good turnout is expected. in 2012, 1/3 of ohio's votes were cast before election day. nbc's chris jansen joins me from cleveland. chris, we have a new poll out showing a dramatic shift in ohio. >> reporter: yeah. you were talking about it before. baldwin/wallace poll. it shows hillary clinton up 9 points. folks i'm talking to, democrats from the campaign think it's more of a trend than the actual number. they think it's tight here which is why what you're seeing is important. they need to run up the numbers in the cities like cleveland, particularly cleveland with the african-american vote, if they're going to make up where trump has shown some real strength and that is traditionally white working class voters in places like the mahoney valley that used to be democratic. here's where folks are putting their ballots. they started this morning at

8:00 when the doors opened. people streamed in. among the early voters are lavern and jamall. can you tell me who you voted for and why? >> yes, i can. i'd be glad to. i voted for hillary clinton. she is the best qualified candidate. i feel at this point she knows the issues and has a platform. i feel thatanne that says they can stand in the middle of the street and shoot someone is actually calling their supporters stupid. >> reporter: jamall. how about you. thank you. >> i have to concur with everything lavern said. >> reporter: you brought lilja mall with you. >> i did. >> reporter: you're not old enough to vote, are you, jamall? >> no. >> reporter: thank you very much. let me show you some numbers. i think this is what's important, stephanie, when you look at why there's so much emphasis here. they had a marching band this morning, they had people who came up here. in 2012 barack obama won in this county by 256,000 plus votes.

they're mad as hell. they want their money back. they're livid with donald trump and now they are demanding their donations be returned. i want to get the details from leanne caldwell. leanne, who are these donors and why do they want their money back now? >> reporter: these donors are not small dollar donors. they have together either given or raised for donald trump tens of thousands of dollars, and this tape that was released on friday was the breaking point. in two e-mails we obtained of these donors asking for their money back, one said they regret coming to a trump fund-raiser and the other said, quote, i cannot support the sexist man. and so these donors are not happy with the latest news and they just have had enough and they're done. >> what's the trump campaign saying? >> the trump campaign is saying that they know of no donors who have asked for their money back. that's from the spokesperson. they have not really -- they've not given a lot in response to

this story, but in addition, there's a bundler, someone who raises money from their network of friends, and gives it over to the campaign. this one bundler has raised nearly $1 million for the trump campaign and he also says that he's out. >> okay. but in this case these are just two donors, one bundler. is this a trend or is it a one off here? i mean, a million bucks sounds like a lot of money but let's put it in perspective. >> reporter: right. we'll see. i mean, what do they say, three's a trend, right? the bundler that we spoke to did say that he has more. he's just shared two e-mails from some of his supporters with us, and he says there's more out there. i will say that i hav -- i cover a lot of donors, and some of the super pacs that i talked to, the pro trump super pacs, people admit to me that it has been throughout this campaign difficult to raise large amounts of money for donald trump and that it's not going to get any easier after this videotape is
