and we don't get the support from guys like paul ryan. look, i don't want his support. i don't care about his support. what i want to do is i want to win for the people. >> and to do it, the trump campaign appears ready and willing to burn down the house on the way out. campaign manager conway responding to the civil war with an interesting choice of words a short time ago. >> enough of the pussy-footing around in terms of do you support us or do you not support us. the fact is that, you know, some of these leaders have been very wishy-washy. >> so on one side, fighting, on the other side, a camp fire kumbaya featuring the president and almost president and the nominee. >> all around great guy, al gore. >> your vote really, really, really counts. a lot. >> come on, people. come on. >> you can consider me as an exhibit a of that proof.
7:01 am
>> this isn't an audition for, like, some show. this ain't a show. >> but this is. three more states start early voting today including the critical state of ohio. the best political team in the business spread out across the country this morning including ohio where we will check in on that early voting in just a moment. leapt's start with nbc's jacob rascone. that critical i-4 corridor, where critical races are won and lost in that state. been 24 hours now since trump stepped upped those attacks on paul ryan and others. speaking to your source, does it seem the campaign is fully behind this strategy from the candidate? >> isn't that the question? i think that's a mistake to think there's some overarching strategy that regularly guides the campaign. if you look at public
7:02 am
statements, even by kellyanne conway, before he went after bill clinton, she said i wouldn't advise that. you saw mike pence disagree with his running mate and him publicly saying that. it's make it it up as you go in large part. i think that's clear by the public statements and disagreements people high up in the campaign. trump himself is now saying the shackles are off. what he said he meant by that is specifically the republican establishment, the leadership. he is back to primary trump, the trump that ran specifically against the republican establishment and didn't seem to care at all about unity. remember tha he was losing it appeared, enthusiasm from his own hard-core supporters after that first debate. nine out of ten is up porters we talked. nine out of ten supporters we talked to said they were disappointed he wasn't being more combative. he's back to doing that. he's starting at least there. he knows if there is any
7:03 am
strategy at all, he has to first get his base back. he thinks what he's doing now is the way to do that. and it seep seems to be workin >> the campaign as you know talking about the clinton campaign e-mail leak on the trail. clinton campaign saying trump had advanced warning of these e-mails. what's the campaign saying about that claim? >> so he at least we know had advance warning about the connection with russia. we know that those who briefed him on the specific issue told him about the connection and the high confidence of the u.s. government that russia was -- that russia was involved and yet he said he knew nothing about that. trump himself though in the last couple of days has said simply i love wikileaks. the media is ignoring wikileaks. we love this. so the campaign, that's as far as they're saying they knew about it, that they love it, and they wish the media would pay more attention to it, craig. >> all right, jacob rascon.
7:04 am
what time does the rally get under way in ocala? >> about noon. >> now hpn, that's the airport code, hillary clinton scheduled to take off to colorado later this hour. kristen welker is there. kristen, a lot of folks surmising perhaps the clinton campaign already taking a bit a cautious victory lap. this is part of a new campaign video that was released literally about four minutes ago. >> i have never been so ashamed of this country. >> donald trump appears to be be in total meltdown. ♪ it's the final meltdown >> the shackles are off. >> now i can really do what i want. are you going to be more outspoken? ♪ the final meltdown >> i don't think i'm that outspoken. >> i was so surprised to see him sign on with the devil. >> so there's the ad.
7:05 am
what else t what's the thinking behind that? >> i think they're trying to capitalize on the fact you basically have this crisis within the gop and all of these deep divisions within the gop. so you have an ad like that. of course, a couple days ago, the clinton campaign released an ad with a number of longtime republicans saying they're going to vote for secretary clinton. and i can tell you that today in colorado we are expecting secretary clinton to essentially call out republicans in that state who have yet to denounce donald trump. republicans in downballot races. and to really try to gain ground with the split within the gop. that strategy allows her to win over some independent and also moderate republican voters. just a point about colorado, craig, she's heading out to that state. it's a state where she has a double digit lead. if she does have, in fact, a strong win there, it would really put an exclamation mark on what she is hoping is going to be a convincing win in november. i would temper that, though, by
7:06 am
saying i'm been talking to campaign officials who say this race is not over until it's over. the reality is of course donald trump has been counted out many times before. while that ad you just played does seem to underscore some chest thumping, internally, the campaign not yet ready to say the race is over yet, craig. >> before you get on the plane, this wikileaks e-mail leak, what's the clinton camp saying? >> they are pushing back aggressively against these wikileaks, essentially saying russia is behind them. but taking that a step farther, the campaign chairman spoke about this. it's his purported emaim -mails the center of this. he didn't authenticate those are his e-mails. he believes one of the top advisers roger stone got advance warning about this latest hack. that's thing roger stone himself has said is categorically false.
7:07 am
the clinton campaign putting that narrative out there. s podesto also making the point the fbi is investigating. i would just say we are expecting another 1,000 e-mails to be released today and probably every day until election day, so this is something the clinton campaign is going to have to content with until the very end. >> kristen welker, getting really to hop on the plane there, following secretary clinton to colorado. steve cortez is a member of donald trump's national hispanic council. he is here in the studio, a rare in person treat. >> let's just start where we left off there with kristen welker and this wikileaks stuff. donald trump tweeting again top of the hour. actually, this is last hour. this is the tweet. quote, very little pickup by the dishonest meetafter incredible information provided by
7:08 am
wikileaks, so dishonest, rigged system. three-minute story today on "today" show, we've been talking about it here. would take issue whether we've devoted any time to it. these e-mails so far, no bombshells. donna brazile perhaps gave her a heads up about a question, somebody called chelsea clinton a brat. swing voters in suburban philadphia. swing voters in hamilton county, ohio, or florida, where he has to win, how much do they care about this stuff? >> i think you're right when you say it's not a bombshell. but i do think they're still troublesome. then might be smaller explosive devices. to me the most troubling by far, i think part of the problem, there's so much here it's hard to focus. but to me the most troubling was from your sister network cnbc john harwood. the fact he is just so close with the clinton campaign. and really planning and colluding with them. this is somebody who moderated a
7:09 am
debate. i think what we've seen these e-mails lay bare -- even if you devoted time to the wikileaks this morning, i don't think you can argue with the fact that new york newsrooms are dominated with those who can't stand donald trump and their bias shows through. >> i disagree. i don't ask my colleagues whether they're republican or democrat. i don't defend harwood but i would say it's overstatement to say he was colluding with the campaign. at the end of the day, even if all that were true, voters who are going to decide this election in florida, do they really care? and moreover, the fact that donald trump called on the russian government, called on putin to hack and all of a sudden we have these hacks. that's a little curious to a lot of folks. >> i think that was rhetorical. the hacking had already occurred. i think you make an important one here. you are right. we were not going to win this election because the mainstream media is biased.
7:10 am
we were going to win this election -- >> -- other side said the same thing -- >> we're going to win this election on the economy and on security. what do voters in suburban philadelphia what do women voters in florida or wherever they are, what do they really care about? i think they care right now that the economy is crawling and terror is on the march. those two issues, they're a failure of the present administration, hillary clinton represents the status quo on both of those macro issues. and donald trump offers an optimistic powerful way forward to break out of this malaise we're in presently. >> as you know his economic plan, his tax plan specifically, has been roundly criticized,f not mocked by top economists in this country. we don't have time to get into that. i do want to talk about something that was said at the top of the hour. this is what trump said about paul ryan two months ago. >> paul ryan. good. good man. he's a good man. he's a good guy.
7:11 am
and we may disagree on a couple of things but mostly we agree and we're going to get it done and we're going to do a lot of wonderful things. we need unity. we have to win this election. this is truly one of the most important elections certainly in my lifetime. >> we need unity. and then yesterday and the day before, he goes all in on paul ryan. what happened between august 5th in wisconsin and what we just saw, what we've seen transpire other the last few days that wasn't donald trump's fault? >> when it comes to washington, d.c. republicans, the second this campaign ran into trouble, i'll be the first to admit, we ran into serious trouble last week. the second we did, they ran for the hills. when you say he's at war with the gop, i guess i push back. i don't view gop as just mccain and ryan. although they're important. i view it as tens of millions of americans. people who elected donald trump in the primary and who i'm confident will elect him president of the united states. when you talk about rank and
7:12 am
file republicans, common wage earning people out there who are either already identified as republican or been broht in by donald trump. i believe support there is overwhelming. polling supports that. that's not just my opinion. >> what polling? >> polling of republicans. since the debate, he's starting to rise back in the upper o80s. >> you and i both know he can't win an election with just republican turnout. >> of course. >> it would seem he's saying i'm going to fire up the base at the expense of independent voters. step expense of fence straddling voters. how many is that going to be an effective strategy? >> i understand your point. the strategy is this. first, stop the bleeding. think we've done with a masterful debate performance, some terrific rallies, firing up the base. now the next step, and we've got several weeks to do this in my opinion, the next step should be talking economy, economy, economy. and i believe that's where the kind of voters you're talking about, people who are skeptical of us or undecided, that's where we can win them over.
7:13 am
we talk about their pocketbook. the fact this is the first administration in u.s. history that never had a gdp growth year of 3% or higher. most americans haven't had a pay increase since the year 2000. we have to break out of this economic malaise. i think if we speak to that economic angst and anxiety, that's where we get those voters. >> steve cortez, thank you for coming in. dead heat. the clinton campaign launches a new spanish language offensive targeting latino voters in battleground nevada. plus donald trump supporters invoking the second amendment vowing to r up against the candidate who's called them deplorables. >> people are going to rise up because we're tired of taking it. we're tired of being deplorables. we want to be thought of as americans instead of just her stepping stone. this is my retirement. retiring retired tires. and i never get tired of it. are you entirely prared to retire plan your never ring retiring retired tires retirement

donald trump's former virginia campaign chairman says he still supports trump despite being fired by the campaign for leading that protest outside rnc headquarters monday. i'm joined now by forrer eform virginia trump chairman corey stewart. you were fired monday for leading that protest outside rnc headquarters. then, less than 24 hours later, your old boss unleashes that barrage of attacks on the party establishment. did you see that and think to yourself, why did i get fired? >> actually, a little bit i did. the truth was i was fired by personal reasons by the deputy campaign manager. he's good friends with ed gill lispy who i'm running against for virginia governo next year,
7:26 am
so it kind of makes sense. >> it was politics, it wasn't the protest itself? >> it really was, at the end of the day. look, i've always done my own thing. i'm a little bit of a renegade. look, i think people had to be called out. mitt romney, paul ryan. to remind voters that they don't represent the millions of americans who are supporting donald trump because they're concerned about the direction of the country. and just because the republican establishment has betrayed mr. trump and by extension betrayed all the supporters of mr. trump, we wanted to make clear we still support him. >> corey, now, is that fair to say that the establishment betrayed mr. trump or did mr. trump betray the establishment? >> well, look, he's been trying to get along. i can tell you on the ground we've been trying to get along with all the establishment guys. but they -- at the first sign of trouble -- they were just looking for a reason to drop their support of donald trump. they really never did want him to win. >> i assume you saw and herard

from virginia to ohio where early voting is now under way in that battleground state. neither candidate has a clear lead at this point. the state up for grabs in 2012. a third ohio's more than 5.5 million votes were actually cast before election day. "the new york times" reports that so many americans will have voted by election day, more than 40% in swing states according to the clinton campaign. so many that the winner could actually be settled before november. chris jansing is in her home state. at cuyahoga county, board of elections there, cleveland, ohio. i see some voters behind you. it actually looks like election day already. >> i know, actually, i've been to a lot of election days that haven't looked like this. it's been a steady stream. they come here to pick up their ballots and then assuming there's no problems with their registration and they have to stop andsk questions, they come here to vote. and then they drop it in the ballot box over here. we've had a lot of happy kids

who are happy with those balloons. we've got oliver and dexter here who just finished voting. tell me why you're here or for whom. >> well, i'm here for the support of the democratic party, hillary clinton, big fan. i've watched her for many years. i feel really good about the vote i just cast for her. >> why early and do you want to tell us for whom? >> of course. early because -- i'm doing this for my people and i'm here to support hillary clinton and the democratic party. >> when you say my people, why is this important? >> because our people, my forefathers died so we could have the right to exercise our vote. and i want to do it early. get it out of the way. and go get as many other people, get them down here as possible. i hope we get a flood of people. either i got to drive 'em, i got to walk 'em, i do whatever i have to do. i'll get them here. because this is the most

important election in my lifetime. >> look, a lot of this, craig, has been driven by hillary clinton's staff. they've been in 53 counties just this morning with early voting events. i think we can show you here in the predawn hours. then had a marching band from shaw high school in east cleveland. they had scores of people with signs shouting. they had people in some cities who actually camped overnight to do the early voting. why would they do that? well, the difference between barack obama's margin of victory in 2012 frankly was less than the difference here in cuyahoga county. and of course they want to bring up the black vote. hillary clinton has lagged behind. cleveland is the center for this. also early ballots right now at the post office. the director of the election board is there. he is mailing out the early ballots. they've been getting phone calls over in the office saying where's my early ballot. well, folks, they're just going in the mail today. don't worry about it. you should get it in about 3 to
7:31 am
5 days. the one final point i make about why this early push is so important for hillary clinton is this. and that is, i can tell you, i was with the romney campaign in 2012. they felt extremely confident about the election. they felt extremely confident about ohio. where indeed mitt romney, craig, won voting on the day of the election. >> that's right. >> already becoobama had gottenh a big lead in early voting, he ended up winning the state, craig. >> all right, chris jansing there in ohio, cleveland, ohio, cuyahoga county. chris, thank you. >> go, tribe. >> of course she works that in. with 27 days left to go, has donald trump turned off the one group of voters that he simply cannot afford to lose? that's next on msnbc. ugh. heartburn.

all right, we just showed you the voters at the poll today, even though election day technically still 27 days away. voters in more than a dozen states are casting early ballots. i want to bring in my friend and colleague. she's the national reporter for "the new york times." good to see you, thank you for carving out time for us. >> thank you for having me. >> you just heard chris jansing reporting from cuyahoga county, ohio. folks there making sure they got their vote in early. that county, as you know, largely african-american. how important to hillary clinton is this early turnout in ohio in particular? >> the turnout is really important. the idea is that she really wants to get these swing states. she really wants to kind of replicate what barack obama did in 2008 and 2012. but i should say ohio, while it's important to hillary clinton, the idea is that donald trump really needs to win these swing states. she has several paths to victory that include pennsylvania, that
7:36 am
include florida, if she can win them. she could lose ohio and still win the nomination. however, if donald trump loses it, it makes it that much harder. if he loses florida, it's over. the idea is ohio is an important state. if you can remember, back a couple months ago, both the hillary plane and donald trump's plane were both parked in cleveland at one time. that tems you they were both kind of circling the wagons in that state for a very long time. >> i want to ask you about an article you wrote a couple days ago there in the paper that really got my attention. you wrote about the outrage over trump's, you know, 2005 remarks about sexually assaulting women. many in trump's own party have expressed disgust with those remarks. they've distanced themselves from the candidate as well. you wrote, in part, quote, some have said the fury may be particularly intense because mr. trump, who has previously offended a number of minorities, is now being perceived as demeaning a target historically
7:37 am
more valueled in american society, white women. what did you mean by that? >> well, in really historically as i've been talking to a lot of experts about this, there's always this idea of having to protect and save white women. people were lynched for this. you think of emmett till who was a young man just accused of just looking and possibly whistling at a white woman and he was murdered and then became one of the martyrs of the civil rights movement. this idea of white women being the idea of purity, the symbol of being this thing, generic white woman that we all kind of want to protect in american society. when i talk to people after this story broke about the video being released, people instantly said well all these senators and all these people are talking about their daughters and their mothers and this level of empathy but they didn't have that level of empathy when donald trump was talking about mexican immigrants or about banning muslims or about saying that african-americans are
7:38 am
living in hell. so this idea is that empathy is born out of, one, the idea, the historical idea, of white women being more valued. also, too, the idea that donald trump -- the reason people were very upseptember at donald trump is because they felt like he was insulting and almost assaulting white women. and that idea is they can really see their sons or daughters or i should say their daughters and their mothers and really people in their households in way they couldn't see with other people like mexicans and blacks. >> struck me over the past weeks as we saw this campaign play out for a while we saw donald trump going to black churches. we saw what appeared to be genuine perhaps attempts to reach out to the hispanic community. we have not seen that over the past i'd say two or three weeks. has the campaign given up on reaching minority voters? >> i don't think they've given up but the idea is the numbers just are the numbers.
7:39 am
he is losing african-american voters by numbers that really -- we've not seen in almost two, three deck kapds. the idea is republicans have already struggled to have african-americans or hispanics. the idea they had this big autopsy report after mitt romney lost. saying we really neated to adjust our party and really go after these different demographics groups. donald trump seems to have offended a lot of people. i think in some ways he has so much things he has to worry about, the idea that he has to now kind of convince people who were in this corner before to back him. he has to be focused on kind of making sure his core base is there, making sure there are republicans who are kind of undecide. so one day if possible, if he has time, get back to going after african-americans. i should say at one point his campaign was telling me he was going to go on this tour of historically black colleges. that hasn't happened yet. the idea is there was a plan in place. . haven't really seen that plan executed as they described it to me. >> we always learn something

scripture and referenced second c corinthians as two corinthians. not expected to happen today. kelly o'donnell joins me. good morning as we wait for governor pence. i know you've talked to him about the tumultuous past 24, 36 hours. what are we expecting today? >> well, good to be with you, craig. we are sort of in the middle of a worship concert. i'm going to try to speak softly here. we do expect governor pence, who has great credibility in the christian conservative community, to touch on themes that will be in some ways political but also broader than that. he will, i'm told by aides, talk about hillary clinton and religious liberty. that will be something we expect to hear. and claims they make that the clinton campaign has been unfair to catholics. so we'll have to see how that unfolds in governor pence's remarks. as you mentioned, this

convocation is something where students at liberty university are required to attend. i've talked to a lot of student hearse and they say they look forward to this because they're exposed to all kinds of national and world figures who come to speak to them and they do this three times a week so there are about 11,000 students who are here. i have been spending a lot of time with governor pence. we've been talking about the sort of break within the republican party, struggle over how to handle donald trump and some of the offensive things he has said and the way he's conducted himself and how does mike pence navigate that line. so here's a little of my conversation with the governor talking about paul ryan saying he can no longer defend donald trump. >> paul ryan is my friend but yes, i respectfully disagree with his focus in this campaign. >> i think it's important we let trump be trump. >> is the party in crisis? >> i think the country's in a lot of trouble right now. >> but republicans fighting republicans in this way, sir?
7:46 am
>> i don't find myself thinking a whole lot about party right now. >> so this university does not take a specific political position but certainly conservatives are often especially welcomed here and have a lot of traction among the students who are voters and the student groups. and mike pence is the kind of leader with a long public faith history that makes him someone who can speak to these students in a way that can probably connect somewhat differently than trump would. this is part of the campaign trail but it's also a student experience and it has increasingly in recent years become a must stop for companies. we've seen everyone from cruz to sanders and today pence here. craig. >> kelly o. reporting from liberty university, and the crowd goes while. thanks as always. grand old canyon? with less than four weeks to election day, donald trump opening up a widening gap inside the republican party. is it too late for gop unity? i'll ask two republicans on the
