7:00 am
that wraps us up for the hour of the week. i'm stephanie ruhle. be sure to join me on "weekend today" and this guy, my friend, craig melvin. >> thank you, stephanie, as always. coming up, breaking news this hour on msnbc. 25 days to go until the election and nbc political unit out with this new battleground map. the second presidential debate. look at where this race stands right now. the states in some shade of blue for hillary clinton, red for donald trump, orange for toss-up. hillary clinton, as you can see, 287 electoral votes, more than the 270 needed to win the white house and the reason? right here. georgia. utah. arizona.
7:01 am
all of them have been moved out of donald trump's column and into the toss-up column. meanwhile, new hampshire, north carolina, those are hillary clinton's now. what's causing this shift? for one, democrats and republicans agree on at least one thing. both sides insist america is at a moment of reckoning and the candidates and party leaders offering the starkest contrast to date. >> imagine how you'll feel if you stayed home or if you didn't do everything possible to elect hillary. >> don't act like this started with donald trump. i mean, he did take it to a whole new level. >> i know it's a campaign, but this isn't about politics. it's about basic human de seced. >> he didn't come out of nowhere. that's why we have to win this electi election. >> no one deserves the kind of abuse.
7:02 am
>> also this morning, donald trump promising to release evidence today, perhaps in a few hours, disproving those reports by seven women alleging inappropriate contact. >> the claims are preposterous and defied common sense and logic. i will not allow the clinton machine to turn our campaign into a discussion of their slanders and lies. we already have substantial evidence to dispute these lies, and it will be made public in an appropriate way and at an appropriate time, very soon. >> so two of the female accusers you'll remember told their story to "the new york times." trump's lawyers immediately fired off a letter demanding a retraction but "the times" responding, nothing in our article has had the slightest effect on the reputation of mr. trump, through his own words and
7:03 am
actions already created for himself. if mr. trump disagrees, we welcome the opportunity to have a court set him straight. another busy friday morning here. the best in the political busy ready to go. peter alexander is covering the trump campaign. peter, let me start with you. this evidence that trump says he has to debunk these accusers. what do we know about this evidence? >> reporter: let's start with the source of this information. right now, it's mike pence. not the source of how to debunk him but the source of the fact that's the strategy of this moment. he did the rounds on morning television including with us on nbc news, "the today show" and here's what fueled everybody's expectations and we'll hear more in the coming hours. take a listen. >> i think it's coming. and it's coming in, frankly, probably in a matter of hours. i know that melania trump through her attorneys reached
7:04 am
out to one of the you believe kag publications. >> it's showing us evidence. >> well, just, you know, stay tuned. there's more information coming forward. >> he said stay tuned and we wait for that new information as donald trump and mike pence just a short time ago left a fundraiser in new york city. they will campaign today but the reporting from the "wall street journal" may give us a preview of what the expected effort is today. they'll claim carlos slim part of the secret effort to dredge up these decades old allegations against donald trump that he touched women inappropriately. there you can see slim. he is a "new york times" shareholder and a clinton foundation donor. the thought being according to the journal's reporting from a trump advisor that slim, in effect, was trying to hurt donald trump and help his friend, hillary clinton here. the clinton campaign responded directly to the journalist's
7:05 am
reporting said it was a deranged right wing conspiracy theory. what's important to note, at this time, we wait to see what this announcement is that mike pence was, in effect, teeing up a little bit earlier but if it were to be about carlos slim accusing him of dredging up these things, he's generally viewed as a well respected international businessman but more importantly, it doesn't get to the heart of the accusations, the allegations them self and i think that's what people are waiting to hear as he tried to debunk those allegations at their root. >> slim telling "the wall street journal" a short time ago, perhaps it was late yesterday, he's not even involved in mexican politics. not even american politics. peter alexander, national correspondent for us in washington, dc on this friday morning, thanks as always, sir. let's turn to msnbc's political correspondent kasie hunt covering hillary clinton and the democrats for us, kasie. the first lady getting a lot of
7:06 am
attention for the speech thursday. beyond the speeches, how's the clinton campaign planning to use the first couple as we approach three weeks into the election now? >> reporter: even bill clinton suggesting that michelle obama's speech yesterday was the the best speech any democrat has given over the course of this campaign. you know, the clinton campaign, what happened with michelle obama yesterday, they didn't necessarily orchestrate it. clinton aides telling me that the interest in making a speech that was as personal as the one michelle obama gave really came from her herself. it was a statement that she felt she needed and wanted to make. of course, her husband as well on the campaign trail on thursday in ohio. he was campaigning for democratic senate candidate ted strickland who's running against rob portman, the republican senator from ohio. portman is very well ahead in
7:07 am
that race. so you asked, what does the first couple do going forward? i think for the president, protecting his legacy which is what he said multiple times is his goal here involves not just getting hillary clinton elected but also doing some work to try to put the senate in democratic hands because ultimately, they'll need that if they want to try and actually get things done going forward if a president hillary clinton is going to crack deals with capitol hill, they'll need more democratic senators and strickland is very far behind but at the same time, the president was out there saying, rob portman is a guy who stuck by donald trump until he said those things on that "access hollywood" tape in two2005 and you've seen a distinction made between trump and the republicans but now the president is making the argument. these guys stood by this man and it's only now they're rejecting him? >> hillary clinton got laughs on
7:08 am
ellen, talking about the second debate and one of the more awkward moments with donald trump. here's that clip from ellen. >> he was really trying to dominate and then literally stalked me around the stage and i would just feel this presence behind me. i thought, whoa, this is really weird. >> what do we know about how clinton is preparing for the final debate in las vegas? >> reporter: an interesting moment, one of the few times that hillary clinton has opened up a little bit about, you know, kind of the body language, sim bee yac simbiotics. we know she has put an incredible amount of time and energy into preparing for these debates. her team feels though it's paid off and she's going to be preparing some on sunday.
7:09 am
she doesn't have campaign events. we expect her to be hunkered down for that one and the format, of course, traditional for this debate. not the town hall setting we saw in the second one. we'll see them back, not necessarily physically interacting with each other the way she talked about in that clip on ellen. craig? >> kasie hunt for us there covering the clinton campaign in las vegas. kasie, thank you. another woman has come forward with allegations of inappropriate behavior by donald trump. her name is lisa, she's an entrepreneur and told "the huffington post" she was present as trump paraded women in front of their table, looked under women's skirts and commented on whether they were wearing underwear. trump spokesperson telling the huffington said the story was a fabrication and mr. trump never heard of this woman and would never do that. nbc news has also reached out for comment. we have not received a response just yet but i want to bring in
7:10 am
molly riley. deputy politics editor for "the huffington post." what can you tell us about these latest allegations? >> lisa reached out to me after the other allegations against donald trump and she recalled a dinner in 1996 in manhattan where donald trump and john cwet and requested the models walk across the table and according to bayne, he would glance up and comment on their underwear, things like that. and she became very uncomfortable and decided to leave the dinner at that point. and she told a couple people about this. at the time, she said she told her roommate, her sister, but she largely stayed quiet about it until this tape came out last week of the 2005 comments where he was boasting about sexual assault and kissing women without their consent and she felt compelled to speak out. >> why did she say that she was
7:11 am
coming forward now? is it just because she read the other articles that had been written? >> partially that and also, seeing the tape and donald trump's response during sunday's debate where he denied ever acting on the things he said in the tape, he said it was just locker room talk, chatter, he would never do those things and lisa and other women who have come forward since the debate said this is inconsistent with their experiences with mr. trump. so she felt that she needed to say something now, that she could help empower other women to come forward with similar experiences. >> did you talk to anyone else at the dinner? >> yes, i talked to sony morgan who confirmed he was at the dinner and people were on the tables but didn't remember anything untoward from donald trump. >> molly ryan, from the huffington post, thank you for coming on to share your reporting with us and again, we should note here, nbc news reached out to the trump campaign for comment about this
7:12 am
latest allegation. we have not heard back just yet. molly, thank you. about an hour from now, president obama will return to the campaign trail for hillary clinton. chris jansing's battleground america tour continues from what is probably one of her favorite cities in this country. cleveland, ohio, ahead of president obama's visit. she has an exclusive look this morning behind the scenes. chris, what are we expecting from the president this morning and where are you right now? >> reporter: fire. i'm on the shores of lake erie and the president is coming here because this is a key battleground state. they're running neck and neck here. you've seen the latest polls. and just a couple of weeks ago, there was talk about whether or not the clinton campaign would actually abandon ohio. now both the white house believes that they can help put her over the line and she believes she can win here. i'm standing in a place you usually don't get to see when we come to a presidential event.
7:13 am
this is where the press is going to come in when the president arrives in about 45 minutes from now, he'll be taking a motorcade in that direction and overnighted here after a speech in columbus yesterday. the tv cameras ready to go. if we could take a look up on the ridersers, you could see th local tv cameras here and somebody is going to have something else today. her name is jackie larkins, a local businesswoman. she owns a coffee shop, not far from here in south euclid and you are going to be introducing the president of the united states. >> amazing, right? >> reporter: what are you feeling like right now? >> i'm feeling a little nervous and sighted and very honored. >> reporter: you have a coffee shop to allow them to use it as a phone bank but what really precipitated, you think, iss an e-mail you wrote. >> i wrote an e-mail to the
7:14 am
campaign because i wanted to help and i simply said in the e-mail, i'm a woman. i'm african-american. i am a retired navy vet and i'm a small business owner and i'm with her and i want to help. >> reporter: have you met a president before? >> i met bill clinton at a book signing once. when he was here in cleveland several years ago when he released his book. >> reporter: what are you going to say to the president when you see him? >> i have no idea. i don't. i guess it will come to me, you know, in the spur of the moment, but i'm definitely going to tell him how honored i am to be a part of this whole thing. >> reporter: thank you very much, jackie. good luck. it was nice of her to come here because she's got to go backstage and prep for this. look, how is this affecting what we're going to see? this is all about get out the early vote. they're already voting here in cleveland and across ohio. as you know, craig. and there's a lot of anticipation that the first lady may come here as well because
7:15 am
she was, ohio was on an initial list of places that they thought they would have her come. obviously, that gets the crowds, that gets the democratic base really fired up and that enthusiasm that there was concern about, they believe they could bridge that gap and we're going to talk about it a little later. part of the exclusive access is going to be backstage with david semus after the president gives his talk here today about what's going to make a difference in this election. >> that should be interesting because david does not do a lot of television. chris jansing, thank you. jackie, thank you as well, and good luck to you. an unprecedented week in presidential politics, folks. 9,000 e-mails hacked and leaked from the clinton campaign. and the inappropriate conduct with a number of women. i'll talk to lisa bloom

seven women have accused donald trump of inappropriate behavior since his lewd comments during the taping of the "access hollywood" segment that was made public literally one week ago today. donald trump and his campaign have denied the allegations. >> the claims are preposterous, ludicrous, and defy truth, common sense, and logic. we already have substantial evidence to dispute these lies and it will be made public in an appropriate way and at an appropriate time, very soon.
7:20 am
>> and again, we should note this promised evidence according to mike pence could be coming here in a few hours. attorney lisa bloom, the attorney for joe hearth who accused trump of unwanted advances in a 1997 lawsuit. it's always good to see you. thank you for coming by. >> good morning. >> let me start with your reaction to trump's comments there. >> it's very hurtful to jill hearth when he makes comments like that at a rally and the reason she came out publicly to tell her story, and the first woman to do that using her name and her face, talking about what had happened to her, it was because he had previously called her a liar in response to a "new york times" article that had run about her story. it's very, very hurtful to real people, to the women who have come out of the shadows and to those thinking about coming out of the shadows but afraid of this wealthy and powerful man with legions of followers.
7:21 am
>> in addition to representing jill hearth, i understand you're conferring with other women as well. is there anything you can tell us without violating privilege what these other women are saying? >> i have been happy to receive calls and e-mails from other women and we talk with them privately. we respect their privacy and the confidentiali confidentiality until they're ready to come out. it's scary enough to come out with a sexual harassment or assault allegation. multiply that times a million when we talk about donald trump and the weight of the world media descending upon you. so i do encourage women to come out. i encourage them to get a good lawyer and shore up family support before they do it, but it's definitely not for everyone. when you and i talk on tv every day, we're comfortable but most people are not comfortable being in the media glare. >> there are suggestions that the women who are accusing donald trump are not necessarily credible because they didn't
7:22 am
come forward close to the time of the alleged incident. is that a viable argument at all? >> first of all, my client, jill hearth, did. she filed a lawsuit in 1997. so that criticism does not apply to her and i don't think it's a viable claim. most women do not come forward, especially if we're talking about one incident. of course, they should. we would all prefer they do, but we could understand why they don't and look, we women endure a lot. find me a woman who has been working for a few years who hasn't endured some form of sexual harassment or groping. and are we going to spend our whole lives going to the police and reporting these things? some women will and they should, but not everybody does and we can understand why. >> attorney lisa bloom joining us from los angeles this morning. lisa, thank you, and enjoy the weekend. >> you too, craig. breaking battleground polling. everything you knew, everything you thought you knew about the

trump in the new polling but when we turn to north carolina, you see why hillary clinton now, that state is leaning in a democratic category. she has a 4 point lead over donald trump in a two-person race. it's 5 points. let's end up going to the florida poll that came out a week ago that has hillary clinton with a 3 point lead in the sunshine state. and then we turn to pennsylvania where last week, hillary clinton has a 12 point lead over donald trump. good news for donald trump, he is ahead or tied in ohio. bad news, he has to win all four states that i just mentioned and either ahead or tied in just one of them. >> there's this fox news national poll as well that shows hillary clinton, i believe, with a 7 point lead over donald trump now. mark, do we know precisely where donald trump is losing support? >> yeah, craig. and it's really among women that's the big problem, the driver. you look at suburban women. a 10 point drop for donald trump. women 45 and older, 12 point

drop. this is the totality of what the last seven days, that "access hollywood" audio is really been a driver and made this race and moved it in hillary clinton's column with her now ahead 7 points according to this poll. >> the fox poll also checked on president obama's approval rating. how is he doing? >> well. 57% approval rating. every poll i've seen whether fox news or nbc "wall street journal" with president obama north of 50% and that's a very good place for democrats, particularly hits the campaign trail in cleveland, campaigning for hillary clinton in an hour from now. >> mark murray with the breaking news there. a new map out within the past hour. >> haunthank you. >> i want to bring in republican congresswoman, trump supporter, renee elmers. >> good to be with you. >> it would seem based on our

polling and fox news polling, it would seem that the path to victory has gotten even more narrow over the past seven days. would you concede that point? >> well, you're giving me the poll information, but i also understand that 76% of americans say this country is moving in the wrong direction. i also know that there are thousands and thousands and thousands that are showing up at trump rallies. so it really juxtaposes, the information you're giving me in the poll data. i know what you're saying. we've got three weeks out and quite frankly, the coverage has been, the majority of coverage has been dominated by this discussion of donald trump. we need to get to the points of facts. we need to talk about which candidate here is going to move this country forward. >> so you don't even think we should be talking about these women coming toward? >> no. this is something that needs to be discussed, but when we're talking about the next president of the united states, we need to

talk about the issues and policy. hillary clinton in the clinton camp want us talking about this information. i'm not going to say anything about the women who have come forward. i will say that i think it's a little curious timing three weeks before a presidential election. donald trump has been running for office for a year and a half. >> you were with us two weeks ago when the issue was donald trump tweeting at 3:00 a.m. about the former miss universe alicia machado and said at the time, the clinton campaign was trying to paint donald trump in a negative light. since then, we've heard him on that tape making the lewd comments. seven women who have come forward accusing him of inappropriate behavior. have any of those developments, any of those developments changed your vwchand your view the top of the ticket at all? >> let's talk about, as this is laid out in a timeline, first of all, he's already apologized for
