re eligible for 12 months free at mybreo.com. good morning, everyone. it is 8:00 in the east, 5:00 out west. here what is happening now. we begin with politics. new reaction from donald trump amid the latest allegations of sexually inappropriate behavior. within last hour, he tweeted 100% fabricated and made up charges pushed strongly by the media and the clinton campaign, may poison the minds of the american voter. fix! it follows the swing through north carolina yesterday where he pushed the same argument. take a listen. >> after many, many years without complaint, the media and the clinton campaign have brought forward false allegations less than a month before the most important election in modern times.
5:01 am
these allegations are 100% false. when the kbleed does what they're doing now, that is rigging the system, folks. it's rigging the system. the election is rigged. >> now trump's running mate came to his defense but he didn't explicitly address the allegations last night at a dinner that was hosted by the republican party of miami. >> in the midst of the avalanche of evidence of political favoritism and outright corruption and deceit flowing out of the clinton years. in the midst of the willful ignorance of the national media about all of that and in the midst of daily and unsubstantiated attacks on my running mate, it's easy to lose sight of this election is really about big things. it's about things that affect every american. >> and, of course, hillary clinton weighed in on the

controversy at a fundraiser in seattle last night. >> he has now said that he's going to engage in scorched earth attacks. as if what he's been doing have not been scorched earth attacks. maybe an additional argument you can make to the friends who may be straying, is if we do our job in 25 days, donald trump will stop being on the news every single day. >> clinton is off the campaign trail today as trump traveled to the northeast for two rallies, one of those in new hampshire at noon followed about it other in maine. let's go now to bangor, maine. trump is set to speak later today. my colleague is there. >> good morning. the trump campaign wants desperately to get back on offense. instead, the candidate finds him

5:04 am
i will tell you, no, i have not. >> reporter: eight women have come forward to say yes, he did. melinda mcgilory says gropeder in 2003 at his club. >> this was almost a lift of my butt cheek to feel it. >> season five apprentice contestant summer zervos. >> i pushed his chest to put space between us and i said come on man, get real. he repeated my words back to me, get real, as he began thrusting his genitals. >> and kristen anderson said she met him at a new york city nightclub in the early 1990s. >> the person on my right who unknown to me at the time was donald trump put their hands up my skirt. he did touch my vagina through my underwear. >> reporter: nbc news has not confirmed any of the allegations and the trump campaign says substantial evidence will refute them. they tout a new york post interview with a british man who claims to have a photographic

defense tweeting out that all of the accusations are 100% fabricated and part of the media and clinton conspiracy and meant to poison the american voters mind. meanwhile, clinton is off today and tomorrow as well. trump is in new hampshire and here in maine where the latest poll has him behind by nine points. >> all right. that is my colleague for that. now to the clinton campaign. let's bring in danny from our d.c. bureau. >> is clinton staying off the campaign trail before the debate part of her strategy to stay out of the way as trump continues to deal with this day to day controversy in the media? >> good morning. you know, i think it's without a doubt true that we're not going to see very much of hillary clinton in between today and the third and final las vegas debate coming up wednesday, october 19th. i think the campaign would not exactly say that it's a overt strategy to lie low and let
5:07 am
trump stew in this latest controversy. in fact, jennifer palmeri yesterday on a plane said the schedule is aggressive in between the two debates. last night hillary clinton was in seattle for a fund-raiser with the artist macklemore and pearl jam. she's been doing the l.a. media swing. she did an interview with ellen yesterday and reflected on the last debate. take a look at that. >> obviously, there's a lot that is coming out which is distressing. i don't want anybody to think this election is over because it's been so unpredictable up until now that i'm not taking anything for granted. we've got to work really hard for the next 3 1/2 weeks because who knows? who knows what can happen? >> hillary clin saying that even
5:08 am
though trump is swirling in thi controversy, it is still imrtant for her supporters to get out and vote. now right now hillary clinton is in west chester, new york. she'll be staying down for the next couple days most likely doing debate prep in and out. hillary clinton can afford a bit of a less incentense schedule because she has advisors behind her. i saw michelle obama and we learned that president obama is making another appearance in florida for hillary clinton at the end of next week. >> thank you. joining me now, political reporter at the hill and a reporter from "politico." trump is completely denying the allegations coming forward from the women and at the same time he's assailing his accuser as liars and aun attractive. is this how the campaign wants to deal with this issue?
5:09 am
>> the way that trump has been rebutting it saying the people aren't attractive, looking for fame for money, that is the textbook script that the clin campaign would want to write if they had the opportunity for their opponent. what is interesting to me is how donald trump has been trying to shoot back and try to defend his claims when there are ways to e debunk them. we should be seek his wife out there talking about his character. what i think we'll see is last night the trump campaign released a statement from the apprentice star's cousin, trying to debunk her claims and discredit her by saying she was looking for attention. i think we'll see a lot of that in the next few days. however strong the claims may be, i think the trump campaign is going to try to bring out people, look into the past of the accusers. it's playing well in the rooms. i talked to trump supporters. simple denial is fine for them.
5:10 am
but when you leave the rooms and talk to people out in larger areas, it's not working. i know "politico" is writing about this. is some this snag could stick with voters? is the media, you know, not applying the same standards to both the sexual assault accusers against bill clinton and donald trump? >> i think the main difference is bill clinton is not running for president and donald trump s and also for the media, manufacture the accusers had their stories had been covered quite extensively for clinton in previous years. these are all new accusations, especially on the heels of this leaked video from 2005 where he brags about doing these things and then you have more and more women coming forward saying that
5:11 am
he did actually do exactly what he was bragging about, especially the alleged forced kissing and all of that. i think that makes a big difference where you night -- i've heard from a lot of donald trump supporters saying well what about the wikileaks? why isn't the media covering the wikileaks more? and to be honest, when you're presented with the internal machinations of a campaign on the campaign going back and forth, there are damaging things in there. then a candidate himself making lewd comments about women and women coming forward and claiming assault, there is a bit of a difference. the assault is going to get more attention. >> kate, last night the trump campaign released a statement from one of the accuser's cousins to rebuke the latest allegations. should he pivot to talk issues? can he even do that where just stay on point about the issues. don't get dragged into like refuting every single one of the accusations as they come up with the terms we've been hearing? >> that's exactly right. that's what donald trump should be doing. at this point, if he tries to
5:12 am
debunk one at a time and shoots off at twitter, the drip, drip, drip may not work for him. the better strategy is to try to bring it back to the issues. we have the debate coming up on wednesday. and that's the best time for him to try to say, look, these claims aren't true. let's get back to the issues. first debate he did best in the first 20 minutes when he was talking about trade policy and about the fact that he thinks that america isn't leading right now. those are the types of things that will help his campaign. what is plaguing shim that he keeps taking the baitnd when he starts taking the bait, gets drawn into the other story lines. and that's what's going to hurt his campaign overall. >> and obviously throughout all of this, it seems the clinton campaign is laying low, so to speak, kind of letting trump be trump and let the media be consumed with trump. what do you make of this strategy? is that smart on her part to kind of drop back a little bit? >> well, i mean, it is smart on her part to just let the media consume themselves by donald trump as you said. he's providing them so much
5:13 am
information, so much material. by tweeting every morning about this, just like kate said, if he just stopped responding to every single little thing that came forward, then the media wouldn't cover everything that he says. he is the presidential canned day. anything he does or says will be news. what is notable about the issues is trump's campaign manager herself joked on twitter last night that she was a person in the crowd at one of the rallies yelling at donald trump to stay on the issues. what does that say about a campaign when the campaign manager is joking about tweeting that she wants her own candidate to stay on the issues? >> he also boasted about not being on prompter. he took it off and he said he enjoys not being on prompter. kate, let me ask you about this batch of e-mail this is round. anything damage come out of that round of e-mails that hadas was just referring to? >> the problem with these wikileaks e-mails is that they're inside baseball right now. there haven't been any major revelation that's have been able to pull the story line off trump. yes, there is some damaging
5:14 am
things in. there with the ties to wall street and showing campaign tactics. but there hasn't been anything that i think could derail her campaign and really take the focus off donald trump right now. however -- >> can i just say, kate, is that something from the perspective of people like us who are in the media and in the know see political machinations so we're foom with t familiar with the campaign. would the average voter read the e-mails with the same shrugging it off, perhaps? >> that's what i think. i think at this point right now these e-mails, a lot of them do get into the quirks of politics. i don't think a lot of the average voters will process it and be able to really compare it to a lot of things that are going on with donald trump's campaign. however, if donald trump hadn't had all this drip, drip controversy day after day, i think the voters would be focusing on these a lot more in the way that the e-mails have
5:15 am
done. but if they have 50,000 e-mails coming out, there is very well the next three weeks things that could come out that could change the dynamic of the campaign but nothing that i think is totally damaging for hillary clinton. >> and, of course swreshgs that one debate to go. anything can change in the last couple weeks. hadas gold and kate martel, thank you for joining us. it's a voting group donald trump strugled to win over. now is he faring among the key voters in light of a week full of allegations? that's next. >> not one of these women has ever said a word and all of a sudden they all come out at the same time? it just doesn't make any sense. s knows how it feels to see your numbers go up, despite your best efforts. but what if you could turn things around? what if you could love your numbers? discover once-daily invokana®. it's the #1 prescribed sglt2 inhibitor that works to lower a1c. invokana® is a pill used along with diet and exercise to significantly lower blood sugar

actually different reactions and although those editorials and some of the voices coming out have gotten a lot of media, there are also other christian voice that's are speaking up and saying that christian dozen have a duty to remain engaged in the political process. and that we had two primaries, we now have two candidates. you have to make a choice between two candidates both of whom are human beings and all of us as human beings are deeply flawed. i'm not going to say this isn't an election that is unusually contentious. and some very serious allegations flying around. but that doesn't alleviate any of us from the moral obligation and ethical obligation that we have to engage with politics as the game is set up. you have to be wise as serp enlt and gentle as doves. sometimes we tend to engage thinking that gentle is the only way to go when in politics in particular, you have to really

5:23 am
the wikileaks e-mails. we saw this week very little coverage of the anti-catholic, anti-evangelical bias revealed in the e-mails between top level people in the clinton campaign. but we don't have to have the e-mails to know going back this last year over the supreme court case looking at catholic nuns being forced to dispense contraception against their religious view point. you don't have to take a position one way or the other on contraception to think that religious nuns, catholic nuns being forced to do something against their conscience, we're very troubled that that's our future under a clinton administration. we saw a case decided in the ninth circuit just yesterday where the ninth circuit was saying that pro-life pregnancy centers would have to counsel people on abortion options. these are pro-life issues that are very, very deeply troubling and that we see going a totally different direction if hillary

5:25 am
been a lot of us that are very concerned about hillary's approach to women. for example, yesterday i spent time with what neat yachlt she did an interview with nbc, your parent company, talking about her rape allegations against bill clinton and what was cut out of that interview was her describing how hillary clinton threatened her after her rape experience with bill clinton. kathleen willey has the same stories with her interaction with hillary clinton. we keep hearing descriptions saying it was bill clinton it wasn't hillary. my concern when you look at hillary's pattern of behavior related to the sexual assault and harassment allegations against her women is she partnered with him in destroying the women afterward. we're not seeing a balanced description f we're going to prosecute this on sexual harassment, we have to be fair and describing hillary's role in it. >> you believe these women making the accusations against hillary clinton but you don't believe the accusations being leveled by the women against

i want to talk about the wikileaks and in particular about bernie sanders' angle. you heard president obama there. is hillary clinton representing someone who will fight more for the working class than trump? >> well, you know, that remains to be seen, especially when you compare what happened in the primary. senator sanders was clearly that candidate. and what i mean by that remains to be seen, in terms of what will happen the day after the election is the most important thing. if the secretary is successful with, he no he that the democrats, we have the most progressive platform that democratic party has ever had. and it will be vitally important to hold the secretary and every elected democrat accountalabble that platform. there are many blue collar workers in the state of ohio who don't necessarily feel that way. >> so what you're saying is you're still seeing that among the ohio vote wrerz it's a 1%
5:48 am
statistical tie between clinton and trump, there are some who still think trump will be a better working class candidate than hillary clinton? >> they do. i talk to people. and the blue collar worker in particular, again, we have to make sure that we're speaking to the hearts and minds of the voters and people are feeling lots of anxiety. there was a article that talked about the anxiety not just among boomers and millennials but lots of voters in 2016. i keep waiting for rod sterling of twilight zone to come out and tell us we're in the twilight zone. the stress that people are feeling right now in this election cycle because we went from an election in 2008 that was about hope and change to the absolute gutter right now. and many people don't feel like their issues are being spoken to. >> i know some of the wikileaks ties made reference to bernie sanders in particular and to a potential list of strategies to go after bernie sanders. he has not authenticated the e-mails. i'm curious to get your thoughts
5:49 am
in terms of bernie sanders' response about these revelations saying the job of the progressive movement to look forward not backwards. are his supporters going to follow his lead and vote for hillary clinton on election day? i get the sense sometimes that his voters are are more upset about what happened to him than he is? >> they are. you hit the nail on the head. and senator sand serz such a man of his word. he's doing everything that he said that he would. but some will. i was just in new york. i got a chance to talk to a college student in and new york and he said he was a berner but he is going to vote for the secretary. thn he started telling the story about his brother. he said his brother doesn't want to vote at all. so it just depends on how people are feeling about this and it's about integrity. i think that is the part that is really rubbing, not only berners, a lot of democrats do have concerns about the leaks. and although this government is going to deal with russia or whoever else was involved in it from that perspective, i believe that the democratic party when all of this is said and done
5:50 am
will have to deal in a very deep way with the healing process. because the fact of the matter is that hackers didn't write the e-mails. we're dealing with people who talked about needy latinos. we're talking about people that said things about african-americans and others. i'm even in the e-mails as well. i can tell from you reading the ones that i've seen so far with my name in them, the russians didn't write the e-mails. they were by the people within the clinton camp. >> so how have your views changed since you have your name mentioned in the e-mails and how have the opinions changed about the democratic national committee going forward? >> we have lots of work to do. as you know, this stuff was exposed. the first day of our convention which was not good. a lot of the things that senator sanders and his supporters believed was happening was actually true. even though those folks tried to make it seem like senator sanders supporters were exaggerating or out of their
5:51 am
minds. they're not. and so globally for me this is about the democratic party itself and what we do to repair, restore, and to heal and part of that healing process has to be an admission that some people said some things and did some things that were wrong. and acknowledgement of the pain that berners in this country are feeling. if the democratic party is willing to have a reconciliation, i think we can get back. >> okay. former ohio state senator nina turner and political analyst, always a pleasure. >> thank you. you, too. >> in a moment, trump strategy to combat a growing number of allegations from women is denial simply good enough?

at forbes. good to see you again. let's talk a little bit about the accusations between the denying the accusations and offering up conspiracy theories. how effective may they to be denying or refuting the accusations? >> yeah. i think that both of those strategies are ineffective. i think the pattern is strong and the idea that it's a conspiracy is weak. i think strongest argument is one of the earlier guests mentioned is when bill clinton was facing similar allegations in the 199 o's, manufacture the women who made the allegations also alleged that hillary clinton was involved in threatening and silencing them. that's perhaps strongest argument well, it's a terrible thing i've done but both sides do it. i think the defense he didn't do it is not going to fly. >> we saw first lady michelle obama and the president address the allegations really in powerful speeches, particularly michelle obama's which was very personal. there is nobody on the trump side on this level to do his bidding for him.
5:56 am
will the obamas' words have an impact on undecided voters, particularly those republicans that are still on the fence? >> well, we've already seen an impact of the allegations in the polls, particularly in these important swing states. will the president and first lady's words add to that? perhaps. the real problem is what donald trump is alleged to have done. what he himself admit odd red to have do -- admitted to have done. >> you sthaed trump showed me white identity politics is the dominant force driving the republican grassroots. today's go spchlt in your view a vehicle for the racial resentment and nostalgia of older white voters? >> yeah. sorry, go ahead. >> no, go ahea i mean, my concern has been that the biggest problem isn't so much racism. there are certainly racist who's are out there who are causing a lot of trouble and who mr. trump
5:57 am
is appealing to. the bigger problem is that because the republican party is overwhelmingly white and not just overwhelmingly white but particularly voters who are in dem graphically homogenous communities. they don't always see the diverse side of america. they're not part of the parts of america that are diverse. they're geographically isolated from the diverse parts of america. seen in a sense we have the two americas. there is the diverse coastal urban america and suburban america and the more rural america that is more homogenous and cull tuturally that tloed al divide and the america to have day is not the america they grew up in the '40s and '50s and '6 o's. that is a huge problem for the gop. they have to be committed to reaching out and advocatingly interest and being committed to making life better for all americans, not just those rural white voters. >> very quickly. what can we expect to take place
5:58 am
at the debate? >> well, let's hope it's not a dumpster pfeifer and we focus as much as possible on policy. chris wall sass moderating. but chris wallace's style is to ask a lot of the media gotcha type questions. i suspect that will -- >> do you think that will favor trump more than clinton? >> i think the debate is going to have that same sort of well there is this allegation about the women here and the allegation of the e-mails there and as opposed to a debate about policy which is what i think i would prefer and a lot of americans would prefer. >> certainly, i couldn't agree with you more on that one. always a pleasure to talk with you. thank you very much. >> thank you. nbc news learning the u.s. is considering an unprecedented cyber attack against rush yachlt new information on that at the top of the hour. stay with us. for lower back pain sufferers, the search for relief often leads here. introducing drug-free aleve direct therapy. a high intensity tens device that uses technology once only in doctors' offices. for deep penetrating relief at the source. new aleve direct therapy.
