tv   MSNBC Live  MSNBC  October 20, 2016 11:00am-11:53am PDT

11:00 am
remember we told you early in the hour vice president, joe biden, speaking on stage. he reacted to donald trump's comment. he attacked of the notion whether we have a democratic process, making some news where he is and where we are at the hoover dam wrapping up at this hour of msnbc, we are getting on a plane and going back to my hometown of pennsylvania outside of philadelphia. that's where the show will come to you tomorrow. in the meantime, we'll leave it to my colleague, thomas roberts covering the rest of this afternoon. hi thomas. >> hi halie, we get back on track of donald trump's message today that he will accept the results only if he wins. he made that stunning announcement. a new polls showing him tied with
11:01 am
hillary clinton. >> i would like to promise and pledge to all of my voters and supporters and to all of the peoplek z of the united states that i will totally accept them resultsdé of this great and historic presidential election if i win. [ cheers ] if i win, this new caveat was proceeded at trump's statement during the debate last night. >> do you absolutely that you absolutely accept the results of this election. >> i will look at it at the time. i am not looking at it anything now. there is a tradition in this country, in fact, one of the clauses of this country of the peaceful transition of power. are you saying you are not --
11:02 am
>> what i am saying is i will tell you at the time, i will keep you in suspence suspense. >> that's horrifying. there was a time where he did not get an emmy for his tv program three years in a row and he started tweeting the emmy is rigged. >> we kickoff this hour are our correspondence kicking off our campaign trail with jacob rascon and nbc's alex alexander andxj kasie hunt and ari melber. jacob, let me begin with you. explain what happens and how the folks and supporters are responding. >> reporter: his supporters responded enthusiastically when we thought he was making news. you heard the dramatic pause "if
11:03 am
i win," the crowd really went wild. this room is filled with screams and yells. they love the show of it all. interestingly, let me ask this we are just learning about this. the campaign set out with some prepared remarks "if i win." which he said that i will totally win the results coming unexcept in except the concession speech. right after he says ", all right, the debate last night was amazing. in all of his disagreeing with the public and the campaign manager and top surrogate of this issue and criticism, he appears to be having fun with it thomas. >> all right, we listen to donald trump again out there
11:04 am
talking about what it means for a rigged system only will be happy with this system if he wins and so many people have reactions to what he said on the debate stage last night and we had a lot of people talking about it going in whether it is mike pence or his daughter kellyanne conway today on "morning joe" talking about it. >> you were asked directly yes, of course we'll accept that. why does the answer change after the debate? >> it does not change for me. that's the condition that i am giving. i presume that mr. trump got to take a look at it. he's got to see if there were any regularities or voter fraud. >> ari, let me talk to you about that. john mccain put out a statement saying i did not like the outcome of the election but i had to do to concede and respect
11:05 am
of the will of the american people and respect that is every american leader's first responsibility. >> what's the big deal of donald trump saying he wants to reserve his legal rights, that's fair, right? the words that he used in the rally today landed some where much closer than he would hear. it comes in with all these other dangerous words. it is dangerous and irresponsible. that's why the republicans and including his running mate are trying to run it back. how we respect the election officials who are of course by the way, of both parties and
11:06 am
local because we have federalism in this country or when do they see a problem with that. as an observer and a lawyer and a reporter i find this all very concerning. this was not part of the debate last night where how do you feel of the abortion or the economy and you have reasonable disagreements. this is someone in his words is saying he's not sure whether he will accept the outcome and it is not up to him. it is determined by the elected officials by both parties and by the courts. having said that, that was interesting in the news for the last hour is having said all that and muddy it up and riled up a lot of people. he did also and as you mentioned, thomas, state something that's on his on reasonable. if there is evidence or close and not a clear result, he reserves the right to challenge. sure. so he landed on a reasonable
11:07 am
position, i don't know if he wrote those words or someone else did. how we got to this point is very important. i hope we don't spend weeks going into this election with people misunderstanding that it could be stolen this way because that's not what the facts the showed. >> he was satisfied with that outcome. we have the vice president joe biden, i want to play what he had to say, take a look at this. >> the things that donald trump is saying or doing is genuinely a threat to the democratic process is based on trust. think about what it is. no democratic process can be sustained without a sense of trust. trust. not only is he disqualified by what all the presses talking
11:08 am
about today. he's questioning not the legitimacy of our election but the legitimacy of our democracy. if you questioned that a democratic election -- you are attacking the essence of the notion whether we have -- >> this is a time where trump gave the answer. we have the pro-life and the pro-choice people all come together. we have democrats and republicans, all thousand arenow are coming together of what democracy means. donald trump is taking a ambassadorscorch approach of the republican party. >> this is significant, its impact down ballot on those vulnerable republicans, folks like richard burr or rob portman
11:09 am
put out a statement in ohio, of the debates tonight there are republicans across the board and the country right now are troo ig trying to distance themselves with donald trump. this time of what is a two-century tradition of this country of a peaceful transfer of power. you were talking about what mccain said about that statement. of course, comments of him being a war hero. mccain said, the tradition here is the loser says the winner is all over. you are my president. that's not republican or democratic, that's the american way. a lot of republicans are finding themselves in a difficult
11:10 am
decision. >> i want to add this to the mix. we got the >> he's adding his voice to this. donald trump and him last night. i think it is a stupid comment, get over yourself. >> we had trump also talking more about the establishment rigging of the system in general because of wikileaks and what was revealed an e-mail from donna brazil, take a look at this. >> she got the questions she gave them to hillary clinton. hillary clinton did not say i would like to announce that a mistake was made and i cannot take that question. how many questions are there, right? can you imagine that i got the question? they would call for the reestablishment of the electric
11:11 am
chair, do you agree with it? >> kasie hunt this has to be with ane ñ e-mail that was revealed from donna brazil when an ycnn analyst. trump is really running full steam ahead of this. what is cnn and what is the clinton's campaign saying about this? >> reporter: thomas, i want to be clear here because donald trump has been tweeting about this today and the timing of the tweet and the way it is worded suggesting that hillary clinton has access to the general election debate question last night. that was not the case. he was referring to a series of e-mails from donna brazil who was then a contributor to cnn and now she's the interim chair democratic party talking about questions at the cnn town hall. >> donna brazil said we never questioned him in advance.
11:12 am
in the spin room last night she said she did not dispute and i could not get her to say the authenticity of the e-mail. >> i think you know take back for a moment and look at the wikileaks issue broadly. this is making nitty and grid and -- she's overly political of how she's thinking about her policy positions and not what she believes. the clinton campaign is focusing on the fact that this hack and the director of the national intelligence again talked about this, this morning in washington that they think originates with russian hackers. this is unprecedented event in american politics. you have marco rubio and republicans coming out yesterday and saying as much as expressing concerns about this.
11:13 am
look, you may want to see this -f it could be republicans next time. thomas. >> we are also hearing about russian hacking. hillary clinton campaign's chair, john podesta he unwittingly gave hacker access by clicking a link that directed him to a google log and he entered his info.. we got the president who's been tweeting hillary clinton's job of outstanding debate three. here is the president right now speaking on the campaign trail for clinton. also, michelle obama is going to be headed to arizona today, correct? >> reporter: that's right thomas. that's part of first of all hillary clinton has a strong surrogate. donald trump does not have in many cases. the man by himself with an
11:14 am
exception of mike pence. that give hearse an advantage. arizona is important and some polling i am talking to republicans and democrats. we are looking at internal data. arizona is movingeing in hillary clinton's direction. it has been a red state. this is part of the clinton's campaign focus on trying to take this election -- it is viewed unquestioningly as a victory for her. you hear republicans getting more and more nervous. for the clinton's campaign, it had a lot to do with the conversation of a rigged election. you feel more and more pressure to show this is overwhelming if the trend continues through november 8th. we know one thing that donald trump is saying, he's not completely concedes until the election is results is verified. >> california does not verify their results until december
11:15 am
16th. ari, i want to give you the last word here. >> i think people concede both sides. this is is espionage, this is grave and serious and we have the society -- on the other hand donald trump in that instance that if this stuff us true it came out it add to the quantum of information where you have to make the assessment of the e-mails that's not that grave. this is a new problem actually. water gate was domestic interference. this is cyber water gate and you don't want to play into the hands of the enmanyemyiesenemies. we and the a lot of voters if something that's true, that's something you want to find out before election day. i don't think we'll scare the circles on this yet. >> no, we have not.
11:16 am
as we helicopter to talk'll continue to talk about these e-mails and we don't have authenticity ofies of these e-mails. thank you, ari melber and kasie hunt. coming up over those wikileaks e-mails. is it another reason for voters not to trust her. jennifer granholm joins me next. plus, it was a sharp attack on trump's character. >> such a nasty woman. i'm here in bristol, virginia. and now...i'm in bristol, tennessee. on this side of the road is virginia... and on this side it's tennessee. no matter which state in the country you live in, you could save hundreds on car insurance by switching to geico. look, i'm in virginia... i'm in tennessee... virginia...
11:17 am
tennessee... and now i'm in virginessee. see how much you could save on car insurance. or am i in tennaginia? hmmm... ok, so we drowned the fire... yep. stirred it... mm-hmm. drowned it again... mm-hmm. and now just feel if it's cold. yeah. cool. [camera shutter clicks] [whistling a tune] smokey just gave me a bear hug. i know. i already posted it. i was working in the yard, my chest started hurting and i thought, well, you need to go to the doctor. i was told that is was cancer, and i called cancer treatment centers of america. dr. nader explained that they can pinpoint the treatment. once we identified that there was this genetic abnormality in her tumor we were able to place her
11:18 am
on very specific therapy. our individualized care model gives each lung patient specific treatment options with innovative procedures that are changing the way we fight lung cancer. we have excellent technology that will allows us to perform very specialized procedures for patients who have lung disease. to learn more about these targeted therapies and advanced procedures for lung cancer, as well as the experienced physicians who deliver them go to cancercenter.com when he showed me the cat scans, i was so amazed. with this treatment, she had a dramatic response. call or go to cancercenter.com. cancer treatment centers of america. care that never quits. appointments available now.
11:19 am
under her plan you have opened borders. >> if you go on and read the rest of st sentence, i was talking about energy. you are very clearly quoting from w> t()j and what's important from wikileaks is that the russian government has engaged in espionage against americans. i think the most important question of this evening chris, is finally will donald trump admit and condemn that the russians are doing bzlzthis. >> that was a great pivot off the fact that you want open o+e border. >> how did we get off to putin? >> we have hillary clinton confronted of comments where she made open border -- our jennifer granholm is joining me now
11:20 am
she's a hillary clinton's supporter and is still in >> it is nice to see you.?[h? >> it is good to see you, too. >> i am heading out after this. i am here just for this. >> governor, lets get into this, trump and clinton avoided a lot of thing that is÷udñ are traditional, shaking hands at the beginning and at$kf'ç the >> um, wellúe4) definitely think that donald trump missed a huge moment. her debate performance last night was the best debate performance performance. in her life as we look back in this trilology debate -- cql9 >> what about civility and even in closing shaking hands or showing something to the american people as we continue
11:21 am
to talk about a peaceful transfer that these two candidates cannot shake hands and show that moment. >> it would have been nice to do that and there is no doubt about it. ino/ terms of the overall str you can structure of the debate and the ability for her to get her points across making sure she's reaching out and her closing arguments even though it is an impromptu closing, her opening argument where she said she wanted to appointi justice for all people. it would have been nice to shake hands. ultimately, people were concerned of what's going on in the debate. >> governor, he will be happy if he wins. hillary clinton was asked about the same thing on her point she did not answer that question
11:22 am
directly. are americans just suppose to presume if he will accept the outcome if she were to lose. >> of course, she will uphold this 240 years tradition with that question. i am glad to see that some advisers must have gotten to him about the ridiculous position of not accepting it. anyjac candidate can challenge something at the end. the premise should be, the default /is of course,mt she supports democracy. >> governor jennifer granholm. good luck getting out of vegas. >> i am on my way. >> thank you. >> all right, we got widespread reactions of last night's faceoff. did the gop nominee able to win over certain voters. we have the pulse here at home and across. next, an update on the pulse question fb÷today.
11:23 am
we are asking you this, didi7 the debate change 25% of you say yes and 75% say no. check out the pulse on www.pulse.msnbc.com. be sure to talk to your doctor before you begin an aspirin regimen.
11:24 am
11:25 am
11:26 am
i just want more substance and direct answer to a question. what i heard of the negativity, i started to tune out a little bit. i want to hear the issues i did not want them to make personal attacks on each other. >> donald trump rallied in ohio today. a focus group of 32 undecided voters watched the debate last night. this took place in columbus ohio. most agreed, they are over the negativities and want to hear solutions to issues. joining me now is our republican
11:27 am
strategists. chris, great job to you last night. the headline is over shadowing everything else that he will accept the really. i want to show you the reaction. i want to ask you here on this stage tonight do you make the certainty that you will accept the results of the election. >> i will look at it at the time. what i have seen and what i have seen is so bad. >> all right we have seen thebjuu numbers taken a dip there. is this political suicide at this point chris? >> it is definitely not a strategy for success. it kind of feeds into the larger
11:28 am
narrative that came out of that z group. any time donald trump attacks and saying this negative narrative around him with his own words. he was doing well in parts.(&1 i can tell you based on the reaction of this focus group. as soon as he was attacking hillary clinton and making remarks not honoring the results of the election they just get tuned out. >>ú+k noelle, what did you think? this is donald trump being the most trumpiesto of all. >> he rallied to his mate. that's great what are you going to do about women and minorities, what are you going to do about that? i don't think he appeals to it at all. and to me, it was the same
11:29 am
trump. he interrupted. kellyanne conway says he's going to be focused and it is going to be a different trump. to me, it was the same trump. >> new polling out of ohio.u8uyjvizé&áuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuutie neck and neck. lets take a look of how this focus group reacting. this is where hillary clinton talked about her 30 years of experience. take)émnñ in the 1990s i went to beijing and i searched for women rights and he insulted machado and calling her an eating machine. and i was monitoring the raid that brought -- i am happy to compare my 30 years of my experience and trying to help every way that i could staying ahead with kids and families with my 30 years.
11:30 am
i will let the americanxuj making that decision. men really respondedid@when she talked about miss universe and women were neutral and towards the end about her being in the situation room, women really started to tune in. did hillary have all highlights or were there low lights moments for her as well. >> overall hillary, had a solid debate. what these undecided voters feel and you have to understand, they are different than voters these folks don't like it when they engaged with one another in a personal way. they want to hear why they should vote for you. when she started of the last part of her answer dialing up they were speaking up to them. that's when she was really the strongest. trump has moments when he does
11:31 am
that but he went into this skinness where he makes it about himself and that backfires. the lesson to reach, the undecided voters out there. you got to focus on their issues and not your opponent blogs. >> donald trump when he was speaking about his strongest platform of immigrations i want to show everybody how the group reacted of open border remark towards clinton. >> heshe wants open borders and people are coming to syria and 550% more people than barack obama. he had thousands and thousands of people and you have no idea where they are coming from. we are going to stop radical islamic terrorism in this country. she won't mention the words and neither will president obama. people are concerned about that. they want someone strong on this
11:32 am
issue. can he use that of the little time left to expand the base if necessary. >> well i wish him luck with that. on the wall, people went nuts over the wall and we were having trouble with immigrations. this is his moment. this was where he shines on immigrations immigrations. i think that if he can -- it is going to be very, very hard especially now when you got the gop divided and even on immigration itself. you got donald trump which is a clear movement trying to defend his stand. like i said this debate debate -- she's a steler0ñ debater. she knows her fact and she got depth%ç on knowledge.jr trump keeps on reverting back of taking the same personals and it is not about him. it is about "we the people." >> the surprise closing remarks
11:33 am
of chris wallace throwing that curveball. did you like that moment yes or no? >> i thought it was very smart. i like throwing candidates off. i thought they both did fairly well for different reasons. slint secretary clinton was stronger and spoke more to the american people. >> noelle, did you like it or not? >> i thought it was great. chris wallace, it was a great year for tic-tacs. >> anyway thank you noelle, i will give you that last word there. >> next the final faceoff. we'll break down last night's debate as we head to break to look at what have the people been talking about last night on facebook and twitter. some pretty big stuff over there, right? like a new language for crazy-big, world-changing machines.
11:34 am
well, not me specifically. i work on the industrial side. so i build the world-changing machines. i get it. you can't talk because it's super high-level. no, i actually do build the machines. blink if what you're doing involves encrypted data transfer. wait, what? wowwww... wow? what wow? there is no wow. incredible bladder protection in a pad this thin, i didn't... ...think it would work, but it does. it's called always discreet for bladder leaks, the super... ...absorbent core turns liquid to gel. i know i'm wearing it but no one else will. always discreet for bladder leaks.
11:35 am
when you've been making delicious natural cheese for over 100 years like kraft has, you learn a lot about what people want. honey, do we have like a super creamy cheese with taco spice already in it? oh, thanks. bon appe-cheese! okay...
11:36 am
wrong, wrong. donald trump last night refuting much of what hillary clinton had to ør "wrong." how many times did he used that? he said it five time and interrupted 35 times. >> i am quoting 17 times. >> you have no idea. >> such a nasty woman. >> she interrupted ten times. >> a very beautiful hotel down the street. all right, in the last debate he interrupted her 19 times and she interrupted him two times. russian president vladimir putin again, played a big part of the debate. >> he was mentioned 16 times. what about the celebrity
11:37 am
prentice prentice? >> he was hosting the lee webb city prentice. >> trump said either big league or bigly two times. >> the internet still cannot inside which he's actually saying. bill clinton's accuser cae]ix up once and neither candidate answered it though. how many handshakes were there? >> zero. none at the beginning and none at the end. the spouses did not shake hands either. >> we switch gear and over to london, nbc's lucy kafanov is in
11:38 am
london right now. i am telling you people were not impressed. >> how many of you are planning to vote for donald trump? one and a half or two. >> how many of you planned to vote for clinton? >> i already voted. lets see if the debate changed anything for any of you guys in this room? if you are sort of undecided and not sure you are going to come out for trump. have your opinion shifted after watching the debate? >> no i don't think anyone's opinions shifted from the debate. we are seeing worst from both candidates. >> my possession of donald trump has gotten lower and that's hard to imagine. >> free and fair election has been the corner stone. >> do you make the same commitment that you absolutely accept the results of this election? >> i will look at it at the time. >> what impact do you guys think that's going to have on the2z
11:39 am
perception of america abroad. we are in pretty bad shape. what went on between you and the clinton's foundation. >> well everything i did as secretary clinton was for iañ our country's interest. >> i work for secretary clinton and i saw the blurred lines. i think a lot of people were uncomfortable with where the foundation began. >> so there is some obvious strong opinions there. these absentee ballotsññ0ñ can make a difference. >> pretty amazing and so different americans are saying how they'll move into another country if either person is elected as president.
11:40 am
>> lucy kafanov in london, thank you, good work. the final minutes of last night's debate had speakbeen spoken. folks are turning out to vote. when the votes are challenged, we only have 19 days left. l kinds of new cus mers. i know. can you believe we're getting orders from canada, ireland... this one's going to new zealand. new zealand? psst. ah, false alarm. hey! you guys are gonna scare away the deer! idiots... providing global access for small business. fedex.

he's incapable of accepting responsibilities and he's always trying to blame something on somebody else. that's what's the difference of the al gore situation. al gore did not goó s around a week before the election crashing the american institution saying i am not going to accept the outcome and keep you in suspense about that. >> there we have tim kaine pouncing on the debate headlines
11:44 am
that had everybody talking today. early voting is taken place in north carolina. north carolina is an important swing state in the election. today is the first day in person voting for& that battleground/m state. our journal polls showing that hillary clinton holds a lead by four-point with a march general of error of plus or minus 3.6. this is tight. chris jansing is in lakeland, raleigh. what have we been seeing folks turning out and how are they talking about this race deal? >> reporter: well, they have been turning out. the average wait has been an hour and a half. this is the first time that this line is curved around. we thought thomas, that we'll walkthru the course of this so you can get a sense of how many people have been voting. these are determined voters and early voters. they come out here and it is nice and cool back here. out in the heat is really been something and we got a few people that's coming under our
11:45 am
tenth because they got over heated and had to go inside. they have made accomodations for for people there. this is the first 17 days of early uaófñvoting. i can tell you that talking to a lot of people online here and most of the debate last night and this thing that they want to talk about is what we have been talking about all day on msnbc donald trump suggesting he may not exceptaccept the results of this election. i continue to watch a couple of comments that i heard today. take a listen. >> the fact that he just, he will keep everybody in suspense. that's so manipulative. that offended me as much assay assay saying that he will wait to tell us after the election just like he's playing for
11:46 am
people for his own entertainment that's being honest. that's very offensive. >> you cannot commit until the end of the election. >> reporter: almost 900 people voted so far and i can turn around and show you. >> all right we seem to have a littleax.ñ bit of issue with chris' audio there. we do want to turn now to some breaking news that we are just getting and here at the pentagon, there is a death of the u.s. member killed in northern iraq. this is having to do with the advance o f mosul. our producer is at the pentagon and richard engel is live for us. lets talk art the pentagon and what they are saying.
11:47 am
>> reporter: a u.s. service member was killed by an ied. they are giving few details that's likely given the nature of how this individual was killed, it is probably relatively a6ry small population of u.s. population who could have been killed here. there is one to 200 americans who are out and assists the iraqis and security forces and the kurdish people. they are moving towards the front line and many americans are back on -- standard installations like kiera west. thairl special forces and
11:48 am
oliversoliver soldiers. thank you, courtney kube we want to get to richard engel. what has been the priority for what we have been seeing in al al -- forces. >> reporter: this whole mosul operation is being launched to get hillary clinton elected. we were out on the front line today with iraqis troops, they want to liberate the city of mosul and get isis out of there. there was no mention of hillary clinton at all. certainly there maybe a political calculation from the obama administration to this is a legacy item to leave office of a major setback to isis having
11:49 am
taken away of the city where isis declare of two and a half years ago. the operation is going quickly than expected and iraqis troops advanced a few miles from mosul. these are still early days. we don't know what will happen when troops entering the area. there are millions of people in mosul. getting into the city is one thing and clearing it is a different matter. >> we are understanding a u.s. forces there. thank you very much courtney and richard engel. we'll take a closer look as we head into the dessert with the first lady. the chance of whether or not that they can swing in the favor of hillary clinton come election day. will the first lady make the difference there?
11:50 am
we'll talk about that in a second. the reason to get you in line at the apple store nearest you. the tech giant is doing something they have not done in the last election cycle. >> after weeks of speculations apple is hosting the next big echt event on october 222ndnd. it is the first time that apple updated the model of 2012 mac book. that's the update, be sure to catch live coverage of the event on theverge.com.
