good morning. it is tuesday, october 25th. i'm betty nguyen alongside alex witt and louis burgdorf. two weeks left until election day. a new national poll shows donald trump outside the margin of error against hillary clinton. showing clinton at 49% in a four-way race. trump at 44%. gary johnson dropped 4 points to 3%. jill stein at 2 points. in a two-way race, clinton has a six-point at van, 51-45. monmouth university poll shows a deadlocked race in north carolina. trump 47%, trump 46%. in battleground nevada, 7 points separate the candidates in the "las vegas review journal poll," clinton at 48%, donald trump at 41%. donald trump tweeting, major stories that the dems are making up phony polls in order to suppress the trump vote. we are going to win.

then later talking to local radio in north carolina and on the campaign trail florida he contended the race is neck and neck. >> i think we're going to have a brexit situation. you know that one was behind in the polls and i guess i'm somewhat behind in the polls but not by much. i think we have a much greater -- a tremendous enthusiasm, much greater enthusiasm than she as. >> in case you haven't heard, the new poll from "investors business daily," the most accurate poll for the last three presidential elections by far, has us up 2 points nationwide, we're leading, number one. >> i actually think we're winning and what they do is they show these phoney polls where they look at democrats and it's heavily weighted with democrats. and then they'll put on a poll where we're not winning. and everybody says, oh, they're not winning. it's a heavily weighted poll with democrats.

that he had been burned by rejecting the polls in the past. >> there's nobody that wants these polls to be wrong more than i do. and in 2012, i sat here every day and told you they were wrong. i made a foolish mistake of assuming that every republican that can vote would vote. because they were so fed up with obama and the economy. and as we learned later, there were anywhere from 2 million to 4 million republicans that didn't show up. i look at the external signs and the polls don't make any sense to me. so i don't know. i'm not going to get caught in the trap again of automatically rejecting what's out there. >> also last night, donald trump teed off on john podesta, hillary clinton's campaign chairman in a pollster practice known as oversampling. >> wikileaks also shows how john podesta, a man who speaks badly

personal account of clinton campaign chairman john podesta. they have not been independently authenticated by msnbc news but the clinton campaign and u.s. intelligence officials have blamed russia for hacking the e-mails. a 157-page document purportedly e-mailed to podesta reported clinton had damaging quotes about alicia machado nine months before clinton used them at the debate. the data dump also allegedly reveals the clinton team began to map out attacks against trump in february. in an e-mail to communications director jen palmieri, clinton ally joe johnson asked when the campaign will start going after trump saying, i know you can't look past bernie and march primaries but who is in charge of the trump swift vote project, referring to a series of attacks in 2004 by the swift boat veterans for truth against john

welcome back. the naacp in mississippi is calling for a federal hate crime investigation after the parents of a black student accused a group of white students of putting a noose around their son's neck. the alleged incident happened on october 13th near a locker room at stone high school in wiggins,

mississippi. the parents say it happened during a break in football practice and that the sophomore returned to practice after the alleged incident. the naacp chapter president wants those teenagers charged as adults. a story sparking outrage across the country, it began ten years ago when the california national guard offered bonuses to soldiers to reenlist for the wars in iraq and afghanistan. now the military wants that money back saying thousands of soldiers didn't actually qualify. nbc's anne thompson reports. >> reporter: former army intelligence analyst susan halley, veteran of afghanistan, is furious. >> they betrayed me. that i gave them my time like i promised. and they can't give me my time back. >> reporter: she sends more than one-quarter of her monthly income, $650, to the military to repay $26,000 in bonuses she got to reenlist. >> we've had to dip into savings. we've completely exhausted our savings account.

>> reporter: chris van meter, a former army sergeant, earned a purple heart in iraq. he's refinanced his home to cover the $46,000 the military says he shouldn't have gotten. >> i think we really got screwed. i think it was a slap in the face. >> reporter: both were members of the california national guard, entilesed by the guard to re-up with bonuses of $15,000 or more when the pentagon was trying to fill the all-volunteer force from 2006 to 2008. only after the incentives were paid did the pentagon realize not all soldiers qualified. >> in most cases the soldiers didn't do anything wrong. >> reporter: the story first reported by the "los angeles times" involves about 10,000 soldiers who owe approximately $20 million. the vfw calls the efforts to get the money back insulting. >> this cannot stand in the way that it's going forward now. that's why we ask the department of defense to waive all further outstanding debt for these veterans. >> reporter: the department of defense says the senior leadership of the department is looking very closely at this matter.

these former soldiers say they've already paid. >> i'm proud that i was able to support and defend the constitution. am i frustrated, yes. am i angry, absolutely. >> i did everything they asked me to do and i did it honorably. >> reporter: now hoping the country they proudly serve will act honorably as well. anne thompson reporting. a check on weather with nbc meteorologist bill karins. i hear there's snow in the forecast? as long as it's in the right places that's cool. >> two weeks ago it was a mountain snow forecast. now all of a sudden they're starting to get more and more common. this will be the next event. it's not a huge snow event. it will be the first flakes for a few people. we're watching a storm in the middle of the country, the new storm that's going to move from the midwest to the great lakes to the northeast. this is the rainfall total. you can see the storm going from iowa through wisconsin through much of the northern half of the ohio valley, great lakes, through the heart of the northeast into new england. most of it is rain but not all. here's one of our computers showing us the snow forecast. this is primarily late wednesday

night, thursday morning. so 48 hours from now into thursday afternoon. the white in here is just 1 inch of snow but that would be a possibility of northern pennsylvania, a good section of new york, northern portions of new england. when we get to the blues it's 2 to 3 inches. the leaves are still on the trees in some of these areas so that could be problematic. we'll see if this plays out in central new york up in the mountains of new england. that's two days from now. here's the timing on everything. the new storm later today soaks minnesota. maybe a few strong thunderstorms here in southern minnesota, northern iowa. as we go through tomorrow morning it's an umbrella day in chicago, milwaukee, through detroit, all the southern portions of mesh began. we'll take this wednesday night into thursday morning through cleveland and erie. there we are 11:00 a.m. thursday, the blue on this map shows where it could be snowing from syracuse, binghamton, upstate new york, portions of the catskills and northern new jersey. we are heading toward the cold season. we don't like the power outages, especially if it's cold out, we want to avoid that. >> but you didn't say anything about ski resorts so focus on

good morning, everyone. it is tuesday, october 25th. i'm alex witt alongside betty nguyen and lewisbuouis burgdorf the pakistani taliban has claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on a pakistani police training center. at least 61 people are dead, 131 more injured after between four and six gunmen opened fire at that police school located in the city of cueta. the gunmen later exploded suicide vests. a spokesman for the pakistani taliban says the attack was revenge for the judicial killing of militants in jails. while an official tells nbc news the attack emanated from afghanistan. nbc's amon mow hah dean joins us now. >> this was a brazen attack. according to pakistani sources it began around 11:00 p.m. monday local time when three attackers, one opening fire at

the watchtower there, were able to penetrate their way into this police academy. there was about 700 recruits, most of them getting ready to go to bed. as you were saying those attackers, one of them was carrying a suicide vest, blew himself up, killing several of those young recruits aged between 15 to 25. the other two attackers went further into that compound and unleashed a barrage of gun fire before detonating their suicide vests. the general in charge of the counter operation said this entire counterterrorism operation lasted about three hours. it gives you a sense of the scope that unfolded over those terrifying hours for those police recruits. as you were talking you were saying there was a clernlging claim of responsibility. we know the pakistani government is telling us that they believe it emanated from afghanistan, an indication it perhaps might have been al qaeda or linked to the pakistani taliban inside their open country. interesting 30 enough in the last couple of hours there's been a new claim of responsibility, unconfirmed by

nbc news, but isis is now also claiming responsibility that it too has -- it too was behind that attack. so adding another layer of complexity to what we're learning about this deadly incident. >> you bring up isis. with regard to the move to take mosul back from control of isis militants, it was ringed on three sides but it would seem that despite the progress they've made some of these isis militants have moved to the western iraqi town? >> this is an interesting development on two fronts. as those coalition forces and iraqi forces move on the eastern and northern part of mosul, there is still that lifeline between mosul and syria where isis' stronghold and raqqah and its headquarters are believed to be. but the reports that are coming out this morning that isis was able to launch this counter offensive operation into the city of raqbah, overtaking part of it, that would be significant. it shows isis has the ability to launch counter offensive operations even though it is still being pressured by these

coalition forces. there are also some reports, alex that about 250 or so fighters are coming in from syria to reinforce isis-held positions inside the city center of mosul. that is where there's going to be a big fight. coalition forces have not made their way into the city center, isis is trying to reinforce those positions. there is analysis they're kind of conceding outer lying cities to reinforce its mold on mosul itself for the fight in the next week or possibly even later. but the fact that they are still able to go beyond mosul, carry out operations in rutbah, that is significant. it requires resources to put that counterinsurgency town, at the same point it shows isis still has deadly capabilities despite being squeezed on other sides of that fight. >> thanks for the update. stateside there are more bad headlines for the president's signature health care law this

and i've been endorsed largely, concept actually at least, by the military and by the vets. we've had tremendous veteran endorsements. the veterans have been treated so unfairly in this country. >> to dispel the notion an electoral college victory is slipping from donald trump's reach his campaign distributed this battleground map designating michigan, wisconsin, and virginia, states trending toward clinton, as toss-ups. arizona, utah, and georgia, tight in recent polls, are locked in for trump. on msnbc yesterday campaign manager kelly ann conway said there are hidden clues to detecting their path to 270. >> when you look at the electoral map, watch and see where we deploy our major assets. governor pns, mr. trump, our paid media campaign, other opportunities we have, our super surrogates keeping their own schedules soon. that's our roadmap. i share it privately here.

channel should he fail to win on election day dubbed trump tower live. the 6:30 p.m. eastern broadcast will air each night until election day. last night's program featured a trump campaign adviser, conservative commentators and interviews with sean spicer and trump campaign manager kelly ann conway. the 45-minute broadcast led into trump's evening rally in florida. this latest broadcast comes on the heels of trump offering coverage of the final presidential debate via facebook live last week as well as earlier reports that trump's son-in-law jared kushner reportedly discussed the possibility of a post-election trump-branded television network with a top media dealmaker. hillary clinton took her campaign to battleground new hampshire where she was joined by senator elizabeth warren. at an event in manchester, senator warren tore into the republican nominee about his remarks about women including the moment he called clinton a "nasty woman" during the final presidential debate. >> he thinks that because he has money that he can call women fat
