3:11 am
location. suddenly, the news starts to get out there somehow that michael jackson may be dead. and it seemed like everyone who had ever cared or listened to michael jackson had decided this was where they were going to go. i couldn't help but wonder, how do they all know this is happening? i have to assume that some of the folks who descended on the scene were doing it because they were on their facebook page. >> in 2009, facebook and twitter are not yet five years old, but growing at a furious pace. >> i was at home when reports started coming in that, you know, perhaps michael jackson had died. there was still a lot of confusion. then you start to see things on twitter. and you know, i think the country was sort of like, no, don't let this happen. no, we don't want -- we're hearing these reports of terrible things. like maybe this will be another thing where the first report is terrible and they walk it back, he's not dead.

3:14 am
marriage? he was hiking the appalachian trail. >> my initial instincts were that story is dubious. if he had been hiking the appalachian trail, it's easy to find where he is or get him to a town with a television station to wave in front of a camera and say here i am. this is a silly story. quickly, my editor and i looked at each other in the newsroom and said what about those e-mails? >> thouse e-mails are a batch o correspondents that had been anonymously leaked to the news earlier. e-mails reportedly wrote to his mistress. >> there were lot of details about his personal life we knew to be true, but we did have doubts whether these could be an elaborate hoax. we all kind of said, you know, this could be it. we already started checking flight schedules between atlanta and argentina. we knew that the last flight back was wednesday, when they told us the governor was coming back.

3:16 am
we go with it. >> after obama won, a bunch of republicans who had always backed climate change legislation like john mccain suddenly looked like they might not back the bill. a general change in politics. i don't think really have anything to do with the bill but just opposing anything the administration was doing. >> congressman pence, why is the president wrong? >> i appreciate what the president said today, but this is nothing more than a national energy tax that will literally cost millions of american jobs. >> the 2009 climate change bill showed that this has become an irredeemably partisan issue. >> you can't cut down on emissions unless you cut down on energy use. that's what's driving this. >> more on the apology from south carolina's governor. >> by the afternoon of the 25th, governor sanford's problems are growing. >> democratic representative todd rutherford is already called for sanford's resignation. >> governor sanford disappeared for the last five days and tried
