witt. with eight days to go, the bomb shell announcement has rocked the presidential campaign. last night the fbi obtained a warrant to begin reviewing newly recovered e-mails as they race to learn if they are tied to clinton's case, an inquiry that was completed in july with no charges filed, despite a stinging assessment that clinton was extremely careless. then on friday comey sent a letter to congress informing them, "in connection with an unrelated case the fbi have learned of the existence of e e-mails. i agreed the fbi should take steps to allow investigators to review these e-mails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as assess their importance to our investigation." soon after law enforcement officials revealed the discovery was from a laptop shared by huma abedin and anthony weiner. the fbi began investigating the former congressman in september

for an unrelated case, allegedly sending inappropriate text messages and pictures to an underaged female. weiner admitted terrible judgment but a victim of a hoax. october 3rd agents seized his electronic devices, where they found hundreds of thousands of e-mails and included some that were clinton related. agents investigating knew in early october that messages recovered in the weiner case might be germane to them, but they waited until this past thursday to brief director comey. on sunday afternoon, a clinton aide told nbc abedin does not have access to the computer in question, which is currently with fbi officials, who are now reviewing a portion of the hundreds of thousands of e-mails for evidence related to clinton. the clinton campaign responded with outrage and said it won't change the outcome of the investigation or election for that matter, accusing comey of violating protocol in handling such matters amid an

election season. fbi officials gave the doj a heads-up on thursday. the message from the justice department in response, according to anonymous washington post source, we don't comment on an ongoing investigation and we don't take steps that would be viewed as influencing an election. that official went on to tell the paper, "director comey understood our position, heard it from justice leadership, it was conveyed to the fbi and he made an independent decision to alert the hill. he's operating independently of the justice department and he knows it." the clinton campaign said it was light on facts, heavy on innuen innuendo, and overblown. also saying the e-mails were never withheld by clinton or the campaign, are not necessarily to or from her, and it's likely at least some of the duplicates of ones already reviewed. >> some of you may have heard about a letter that the fbi director sent out yesterday.

thing, you need to know that all of us who lived through the '90s have seen this movie so many times before, and we don't want to see this movie again. >> in early voter turnout, hillary clinton has a slim edge over donald trump in several swing states. at least 21 million people have voted across the country and so far registered democrats are outperforming in several states. according to nbc news data analytics as of yesterday, nearly 11 million votes have been cast in 12 battleground states. democratic voters have outpaced republican voters in nine of those states. in the final days of the 2016 election, donald trump's campaign is reportedly redirecting attention to traditionally democratic states. today he'll hold two events in michigan before going to wisconsin tomorrow. hillary clinton is holding events this week in ohio, florida, arizona, north carolina, and pennsylvania. clinton, who's putting increased emphasis on minority communities, has also taped a radio interview, which will

translate into spanish and air tomorrow on iheart latino. hillary clinton's lead over donald trump has narrowed as the election heads into its final stretch, continuing to hold a huge advantage over young voters, but a new usa today rock the vote millennial poll shows support has dropped six percentage points in the space of two weeks from 68% to 62%, and in that same time frame donald trump's support edged up by a point. also new polling from several battleground states, a new york times upshot siena poll shows 46% to hillary clinton's 42%. but the latest nbc news wall street journal poll show the candidates essentially deadlocked with clinton up by one point. in north carolina, clinton holds a six-point lead over trump among likely voters, 47% to 41%.

gary johnson has 8% and jill stein isn't on the ballot in the tar heel state. a tighter race in north carolina with clinton leading by three points, 48% to 45%. in pennsylvania, clinton holds an eight-point lead over trump. in arizona, trump is ahead by two points, 44% to 42%. clinton leads trump by three points in colorado. 42% to 49%. and in new hampshire, an inside sources new hampshire journal poll shows donald trump leading by less than two points. meanwhile, with just days to go until election day, donald trump spoke at a rally in albuquerque, new mexico. while there he erroneously claimed hillary clinton's immigration plan would cause hundreds of millions of people to come to the u.s. >> she wants to let people just pour in. you could have 650 million people pour in, and we'd do nothing about it. think of it. that's what could happen.

italy's prime minister is vowing to rebuild after his country was hit with another devastating earthquake. some injuries have been reported, but so far no deaths. the 6.6-magnitude quake struck about 100 northeast of roads near the town of norcia. it is the strongest earthquake to hit the country in 36 years. there is extensive damage throughout the area, with buildings reduced to rubble.

one mayor said 90% of the homes in his town are destroyed. italy still recovering from a series of earthquakes back in august which killed nearly 300 people. betty? >> hard hit there. okay. i want to welcome home, though, three astronauts who returned to earth after a 115-day mission aboard the international space station. the trio, a russian cosmonaut and astronaut touched down saturday in kazakhstan. she said, quote, it was more awesome, amazing, and terrifying than you could possibly imagine. she added one of the things she missed most while in space was the feeling of wind, rain, and sun on her skin. speaking of that, a lot of people felt that wind and rain over the weekend. bill karins is here to talk about that. happy halloween, bill. >> yeah, kids are going to love the forecast, a lot of trick or treaters, parents, too. not many bad spots out there. always a couple in our country. unfortunately salt lake city has

rain, it will clear out by this evening. northern montana, idaho, pacific northwest, later tonight in northern california, but even those aren't going to be complete washouts. the big story is the heat that's across all of the southern half of the country, moving to the middle of the country, we're going to have record highs possibly right through this upcoming weekend. temperatures like these, hopefully you didn't choose the chewbacca costume. temperatures in the 80s. this is very warm for this time of year, and it continues right past today. we're in a drought in the south and it's gotten worse in the last couple months. especially alabama, georgia, mississippi. soil is very dry and when you get temperatures like this, it heats the ground up quickly. the vegetation doesn't really absorb the heat much, so it's easy to get temperatures like this, this will last through tuesday and wednesday. people are going to be using their air conditioners here. everyone cools off a bit by friday, maybe back to normal, but that's it.

regarding the e-mail server makes no difference, but nearly a third say it has made them less likely to vote for her. still of those, just 17% are democratic party supporters, the rest are republicans or independents who lean republican. democratic leaders are also stepping into the fight against the decision regarding the clinton investigation with some calling on him to resign. in a letter to comey, harry reid writes, your actions have demonstrated a disturbing double standard for the treatment of sensitive information with what appears to be a clear intent to aid one political party over another. i am writing to inform you my office has determined these actions may violate the hatch act, which bars fbi officials from using their official authority to influence an election. patrick leahy, thomas carper, dia dianne feinstein sent a joint letter demanding more details from comey by today about his decision. they want information, including

let's turn now to business, where canadian prime minister justin trudeau signed a historic trade agreement with the eu today. joining us live from london to talk about this, nancy, what effects will this deal have on the future of both economies? >> well, the fans of free trade will tell you the pact could boost trade in the multibillions, so that is good news, but from a political standpoint, it's also very good news for canadian prime minister justin trudeau, who as you mentioned flew into brussels to sign the deal, because just a few days ago there were fears the pact was going to be held up by opposition in belgium. we're talking about a province holding it up, a province of just 3.5 million people or so, so this is extremely good news, not just on the free trade economic standpoint, but also when you talk about future trade deals from the eu, potentially with the uk, and what a trade deal they may be able to negotiate once the uk actually leaves the european union.

elsewhere in the corporate space, keep an eye on general electric. they are reportedly nearing a $30 billion deal with baker hughes to merge their oil and gas divisions. this comes according to a report in "the wall street journal" saying the deal could be announced as early as today. bit of merger monday action expected. we are expecting the company to have an 8:30 a.m. eastern web cast. look out for news on this one. it's said to help them compete more aggressively with the likes of industry leaders. and finally, investors are growing ever more anxious about the race for the white house with just days to go now. investors will continue to keep an eye on the polls. many analysts saying they are concerned by an october surprise when you talk about the revelations coming from the fbi, that they are looking at new information over hillary clinton's e-mails. that's keeping investors on their toes, because markets do not like uncertainty and up until now they've been overwhelmingly pricing in a clinton victory.

reports isis killed more than 200 people last week and is using thousands more as human shields. and thousands of shiite militia members have joined the battle for mosul. nbc's foreign correspondent matt bradley is joining us live from irbil, iraq. good day to you, matt. you had a chance to visit a refugee camp this week. >> reporter: that's right, alex. we went out for the internationally displaced people two days ago. this is a camp that grew to 33,000 in a couple months. this means 33,000 stories of tragedy and families torn apart by war. take a look. two weeks into the battle for mosul and iraqi troops have yet to pierce isis defenses. just miles away from the front lines, a make shift city is springing to life.

as the fighting goes on, desperate families arrive at this camp each day by the hundreds. the camp is teeming with more than 33,000 people, and most of them aren't from mosul itself, once that city falls, aide workers are expecting a massive wave that will overwhelm their already limited resources. up to a million people could be displaced in the battle for mosul. assad just fled south of mosul. land mines destroyed two of the three cars in his convoy. he came here in july. his large family sleeping in this small tent. i asked him, how many members of his family have been killed? seven, he said. isis beheaded his brother for spying, then shot his nephews. a coalition bombing destroyed his home. in this growing camp and others like it, the u.n. and other aid agencies are rushing to meet the
