witt. with eight days to go, the bomb shell announcement has rocked the presidential campaign. last night the fbi obtained a warrant to begin reviewing newly recovered e-mails as they race to learn if they are tied to clinton's case, an inquiry that was completed in july with no charges filed, despite a stinging assessment that clinton was extremely careless. then on friday comey sent a letter to congress informing them, "in connection with an unrelated case the fbi have learned of the existence of e e-mails. i agreed the fbi should take steps to allow investigators to review these e-mails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as assess their importance to our investigation." soon after law enforcement officials revealed the discovery was from a laptop shared by huma abedin and anthony weiner. the fbi began investigating the former congressman in september

for an unrelated case, allegedly sending inappropriate text messages and pictures to an underaged female. weiner admitted terrible judgment but a victim of a hoax. october 3rd agents seized his electronic devices, where they found hundreds of thousands of e-mails and included some that were clinton related. agents investigating knew in early october that messages recovered in the weiner case might be germane to them, but they waited until this past thursday to brief director comey. on sunday afternoon, a clinton aide told nbc abedin does not have access to the computer in question, which is currently with fbi officials, who are now reviewing a portion of the hundreds of thousands of e-mails for evidence related to clinton. the clinton campaign responded with outrage and said it won't change the outcome of the investigation or election for that matter, accusing comey of violating protocol in handling such matters amid an

election season. fbi officials gave the doj a heads-up on thursday. the message from the justice department in response, according to anonymous washington post source, we don't comment on an ongoing investigation and we don't take steps that would be viewed as influencing an election. that official went on to tell the paper, "director comey understood our position, heard it from justice leadership, it was conveyed to the fbi and he made an independent decision to alert the hill. he's operating independently of the justice department and he knows it." the clinton campaign said it was light on facts, heavy on innuen innuendo, and overblown. also saying the e-mails were never withheld by clinton or the campaign, are not necessarily to or from her, and it's likely at least some of the duplicates of ones already reviewed. >> some of you may have heard about a letter that the fbi director sent out yesterday.

italy's prime minister is vowing to rebuild after his country was hit with another devastating earthquake. some injuries have been reported, but so far no deaths. the 6.6-magnitude quake struck about 100 northeast of roads near the town of norcia. it is the strongest earthquake to hit the country in 36 years. there is extensive damage throughout the area, with buildings reduced to rubble.

elsewhere in the corporate space, keep an eye on general electric. they are reportedly nearing a $30 billion deal with baker hughes to merge their oil and gas divisions. this comes according to a report in "the wall street journal" saying the deal could be announced as early as today. bit of merger monday action expected. we are expecting the company to have an 8:30 a.m. eastern web cast. look out for news on this one. it's said to help them compete more aggressively with the likes of industry leaders. and finally, investors are growing ever more anxious about the race for the white house with just days to go now. investors will continue to keep an eye on the polls. many analysts saying they are concerned by an october surprise when you talk about the revelations coming from the fbi, that they are looking at new information over hillary clinton's e-mails. that's keeping investors on their toes, because markets do not like uncertainty and up until now they've been overwhelmingly pricing in a clinton victory.

a series of ied explosions rocked baghdad, iraq, killing 17 people. this is the united nations

reports isis killed more than 200 people last week and is using thousands more as human shields. and thousands of shiite militia members have joined the battle for mosul. nbc's foreign correspondent matt bradley is joining us live from irbil, iraq. good day to you, matt. you had a chance to visit a refugee camp this week. >> reporter: that's right, alex. we went out for the internationally displaced people two days ago. this is a camp that grew to 33,000 in a couple months. this means 33,000 stories of tragedy and families torn apart by war. take a look. two weeks into the battle for mosul and iraqi troops have yet to pierce isis defenses. just miles away from the front lines, a make shift city is springing to life.

as the fighting goes on, desperate families arrive at this camp each day by the hundreds. the camp is teeming with more than 33,000 people, and most of them aren't from mosul itself, once that city falls, aide workers are expecting a massive wave that will overwhelm their already limited resources. up to a million people could be displaced in the battle for mosul. assad just fled south of mosul. land mines destroyed two of the three cars in his convoy. he came here in july. his large family sleeping in this small tent. i asked him, how many members of his family have been killed? seven, he said. isis beheaded his brother for spying, then shot his nephews. a coalition bombing destroyed his home. in this growing camp and others like it, the u.n. and other aid agencies are rushing to meet the
