and it appears he's putting some of the booty from that into electing donald trump. helping put these ads on your youtube machine. "first look" is up next. we are less than a week away from election day and the candidates are upping their attacks. donald trump is switching focus to obamacare. plus, we're learning new details about vladimir putin's plan to nationalize russia's internet, putting mika brzezinski in hmicrosoft in his sights. plus, chicago forces game seven of the world series.
2:01 am
. welcome, we're awfully glad to have you. >> thank you. >> we're going to get right to it as hillary clinton is playing defense as the election goes into its final days, chasing donald trump into the blue states, losing ground in the polls. the democratic nominee is following the visit to michigan. on friday just four days before the general election, clinton will visit the state, which last voted for a republican 28 years ago. the clinton campaign also announced six-figure ad buys in michigan, colorado, new mexico, wisconsin, and virginia. until recently, all were considered safely in her column, while also continuing her play into arizona. one of the top super pacs behind clinton is ramping up ad spending in four states, returning to colorado and for the first time wisconsin. this as the trump campaign puts its faith in the ability to flip traditionally blue states. yesterday they laid out their target states for an electoral
2:02 am
college victory, including north carolina, which has trended towards clinton, and picking up iowa, florida, ohio, which would give him 259 of the 270 needed to win. the rest rely on flipping states like michigan, wisconsin, pennsylvania, new hampshire, colorado, new mexico, nevada, or maine's second district. trump's campaign announced a $25 million ad blitz. just last week democratic vice presidential nominee tim kaine was saying winning florida would be check mate, but last night he was in a state that last went republican in 1984. >> we've got one week until the most important election in my lifetime, and wisconsin is absolutely key. we have to have you, wisconsinites, we absolutely have to have you. will you support hillary clinton? will you make sure we win, wisconsin? well, with one week to go, early and absentee voting is significantly higher this year
2:03 am
than at this time in the 2012 election. according to data provided by target smart, the number has nearly doubled to 26.2 million from 13.5 million in 2012. now, this as democrats are worried about a drop in early voting among african-americans. in north carolina, where republican-run election boards curtailed early voting sites, black turnout is down 16%, while white turnout is up 15%. and in florida, the share of the african-american electorate that has gone to the polls in person so far has decreased from 15% -- to 15% from 25% four years ago. this happens as donald trump is urging those who voted early to switch their votes from hillary clinton. >> this is a message for any democratic voter, who have already cast their ballots for
2:04 am
hillary clinton, and who are having a bad case of buyers remorse. in other words, you want a change, you vote. wisconsin is one of several states where you can change your early ballot if you think you've made a mistake. a lot of stuff has come out after you vote. if you live here, pennsylvania, minnesota, those places, you can change your vote to donald trump. we'll make america great again, okay? >> donald trump and his campaign spent much of yesterday on the attack, not against hillary clinton's ongoing e-mail headlines, but rather against president obama's health care law. during campaign stops in pennsylvania and wisconsin, trump tried to capitalize on the recent revelation about increases in individual insurance premiums under the plan. >> i will ask congress to convene a special session so we can repeal and replace.
2:05 am
and it will be such an honor for me, for you, and for everybody in this country, because obamacare has to be replaced. if we don't repeal and replace obamacare, we will destroy american health care forever. it's one of the single most important reasons why we must win on november 8th. we must win. the president said if you like your plan, you can keep your plan. if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. which may go down as one of the great political lies of the century. many americans are now paying more for health care than for their mortgages or their rent. a first in the history of america. first time that's ever happened. obamacare is a disaster. it's a total catastrophe. yet hillary clinton wants to double down on obamacare, making it even more expensive, and it
2:06 am
still won't work. i'm asking for your vote so we can replace obamacare and save health care for every family in wisconsin and for every family in our country. >> on the campaign trail, hillary clinton is renewing her attack against donald trump's treatment of women. in dade city, florida, yet she was introduced by former ms. universe, alicia machado, who claims trump called her miss piggy and mocked her for gaining weight. hillary clinton criticized donald trump for his comments against women and used machado to illustrate the case. >> he sure has spent a lot of time demeaning, degrading, and assaulting women. he calls women ugly, disgusting, nasty all the time. he calls women pigs. rates bodies on a scale from one to ten.
2:07 am
i mean, really, can we just stop for a minute and reflect on the absurdity of donald trump finding fault with miss universe? you've got to ask, why does he do these things? who acts like this? and i'll tell you who, a bully. that's who. i guess the bottom line is, he thinks belittling women makes him a bigger man, and i don't think there's a woman anywhere who doesn't know what that feels like. he doesn't see us as full human beings with our own dreams, our own purposes, our own capabilities, and he has shown that clearly throughout this campaign. well, he is very wrong. >> president obama is upping his appearances for hillary clinton here in the home stretch. he addresses the university of north carolina chapel hill this afternoon, and last night he campaigned at capital university in columbus, ohio, making the case for hillary clinton and taking shots at donald trump. the president tried to pry blue
2:08 am
collar voters away from the republican nominee. >> if you are out there every day working hard, punching a clock, the notion that this guy is your champion, when his entire life he did not have time for anybody who wasn't rich or a celebrity. who wouldn't let you into one of his hotels unless you were cleaning the room. wouldn't let you on to one of his golf courses unless you were mowing the fairway. come on. this guy is going to be your champion? i'm not on the ballot this time, ohio, but progress is on the ballot. but fairness is on the ballot. but decency is on the ballot.
2:09 am
justice is on the ballot. our democracy's on the ballot. america's on the ballot. hillary clinton is on the ballot. libertarian vice presidential nominee bill weld has made his ambitions in this race clear, to make sure donald trump is defeated. yesterday on "morning joe" he compared the rallies to the book "1984" and last night with rachel maddow he vouched for hillary clinton. >> the party hasn't treated you great, even now this one week before the election, i can't imagine your loyalty to them is stronger than your fear as trump as a president. >> i'm vowing for mrs. clinton. i think she's -- deserves to have people vouch for her other than those members of the democratic national committee, so i'm here to do that. >> so big brother is running the

country in george orwell's "1984," and every day he beams two minutes of hate into the minds of everyone in the country. >> right. >> so, here's three sentences, before the hate had preceded for 30 seconds, uncontrollable exclamations of rage were breaking out from half the people in the room. in its second minute, the hate rose to a frenzy. people were leaping up and down in their places and shouting at the top of their voices. the horrible thing about the two minutes hate, that's the name of the exercise, was not that one was obliged to act a part, but that it was impossible to avoid joining in, and yet the rage that one felt was an abstract, undirected emotion, which could be switched from one object to another like the flame of a blow lamp. sound like a trump rally? >> and when asked whether he believes trump's rhetoric has poisoned the political system,

weld said, quote, i think his whole campaign has been full of dog whistles and stirring up resentment and hatred. relations between the united states and russia continue to sink to levels that have not been seen since the cold war, and now russia is reportedly moving forward with a plan to eliminate all foreign software from the country, starting with microsoft. nbc's cynthia mcfadden explains. >> reporter: over the last several months, vladimir putin has engaged in a series of provocative moves, according to the u.s. gornment. from interference into the u.s. election, to nuclear saber rattling. the relations between russia and the u.s. are at a low point. >> i think we're at the lowest ebb since the end of the cold war. putin views the world as a zero sum game between russia and the united states, whatever's good for the united states is bad for russia and vice versa.
2:12 am
>> reporter: and now russia is opening up a new front, going after american companies. a senior u.s. intelligence official tells nbc news that vladimir putin is specifically targeting software giant microsoft. why? not only because they are the most prominent american company in the i.t. space, but they are also known to the russian people and businesses as an easily understood collaborator with u.s. intelligence. in a statement to nbc news, microsoft says, we don't spy on anyone. we don't work with any government to spy on others, and we never would. but putin is pushing to rid the country of all foreign software in both the government and in state-controlled companies. and it's already begun, with the moscow city government weaning itself off microsoft to be replaced by russian products. microsoft office and windows will be banned if putin gets his way. >> signal the russians really mean business now about nationalizing the internet and
2:13 am
making sure that they can create their own secure content. >> reporter: the russians are fully aware that microsoft products, like all software, can be used as weapons in cyber warfare. just before christmas last year, according to a sensitive u.s. homeland security document obtained by nbc news, the russians used microsoft office attachments to shut down the ukraine electrical grid. the kind of thing russia is worried about the u.s. doing to them. to further make their point, last week the russians also banned linkedin, the social media site microsoft is in the process to buying. >> this may feed into hostility or paranoia to america and its products, so part economic message, part shot across the brow, part protectionism, but all, i think, very consistent with the kind of escalation we're seeing from putin. >> and that's cynthia mcfadden, thank you. this all comes as microsoft says

i've spent my life planting a size-six, non-slip shoe into that door. on this side, i want my customers to relax and enjoy themselves. but these days it's phones before forks. they want wifi out here. but behind that door, i need a private connection for my business. wifi pro from comcast business. public wifi for your customers. private wifi for your business. strong and secure. good for a door. and a network. comcast business. built for security. built for business. all right, i hate to be the bearer of bad news on my very first day, but for some of you, gas prices are set to spike after a pipeline explosion in alabama on monday.
2:18 am
gasoline futures soared by as much as 15% yesterday. at one point that was the biggest jump in eight years. after the incident on the colonial pipeline. one person was killed in the explosion. this is the second major interruption in just two months on the line, which delivers more than 100 million gallons of fuel a day from houston, and it ends in new jersey. roughly one-third of all the gasoline used on the east coast. now, the colonial company says the line that carries jet and diesel fuel has reopened, but the gasoline line will remain closed until at least saturday. during the last shutdown in september, gas prices increased by as much as 30 cents a gallon in a matter of days in some areas, with several gas stations running out of gas entirely. >> yikes. we're going to make up for your somewhat bad news and get great weather news with bill karins. it's like late summer right now. >> welcome, ali, by the show.

glad to have you here. alex, you saw people in t-shirts and shorts at the world series game in november. just doesn't happen like that. it's going to happen like that again today. here's the question, are we getting tonight's game in before the rain arrives? game seven, highly anticipated, probably the most anticipated baseball game in a couple of decades and we have a chance for rain at the end of the game. imagine the eighth inning, starts pouring, two-hour rain delay. i don't think that's going to happen, but here's how it's going to play out, rain in iowa, southern wisconsin. des moines, quiet cities, milwaukee, chicago, bring your umbrella today and southern portions of michigan. all of this mess will make its way through michigan. here's the clock, first pitch, 8:00, looking great. no problems whatsoever. clouds begin to increase. here comes the rain. this is by midnight. game should be over between 11:00 p.m. and midnight tonight. the rain should be entering northwest ohio, avoiding cleveland, but this is kind of close.
2:20 am
close enough to make you a little nervous, but as of now, typical game, i think they are going to get it in, it's going to be warm and mild with the rain not arriving until around at least midnight at the earliest. 70 degrees, that's incredibly warm, and it's either going to be a party in cleveland or a party in chicago later on tonight. the rest of the forecast looks pretty good. still record highs throughout much of the southeast, but we will have some rain cooling you off in areas of texas. not bad d.c. to new york either, guys, 76 in washington today and nearly 70 in the big apple. >> okay. it's all good. thank you very much, bill, for that. that's game seven we're talking about. still ahead, we have the highlights from game six of the world series, plus charlie sheen takes a swipe at the cleveland indians for denying him a first pitch. we're back in a moment.
2:23 am
indians hosting the cubs, to cleveland we go. cubs get on the board early. that's kris bryant. chicago has another two runs driven in on a double by addison russell. misplayed that in the outfield. loads up the bases, is relieved by otero. take a look how russell welcomes him to the mound. >> 2-0. high fly ball to left center. at the wall. grand slam! 7-0, chicago!
2:24 am
>> can't hang that slider right down the middle. addison russell becomes the first shortstop to hit a grand slam in the world series, tying a fall classic record with six rbis in the game as the cubs take a monster lead. no drama in this one to the third inning. pitched just like an ace, allowing two runs on three hits. cubs tack on another two in the ninth ant way to the 9-3 victory. after we turn to progressive field yesterday, one game from elimination, chicago is now one away from its first championship since 1908. well, on the other side of that, the indians will try to end their 68-year title drought, sending out starter, he's been dominant, cory kluber, to face kyle hendricks on the mound. what a matchup of aces for tonight's winner takes all world series game seven. incredible drama. how about this, though, actor charlie sheen wants a piece of it. remember he played a fictional character in the 1989 film "major league"? well, he's apparently a little

sour after being asked after -- after not being asked to throw out the ceremonial first pitch in cleveland, so sheen fired off this tweet, reminding everyone of the score, writing, "whoever is idiotically guilty of preventing me from throwing out the first pitch in any of these home games, well, just saying." the tweet included a pair of fans with goats outside the field, perhaps to reverse chicago's curse of the billy goat back on to the indians. the list is topped by the four remaining undefeated power five teams. alabama, clemson, michigan, the only surprise was texas a&m at number four, one spot up undefeated washington out of the pac 12. finally, tiger woods is expected to make his return to golf after a 16-month break from competitive play. he confirmed his commitment to play in next month's hero world

challenge in a press release yesterday. woods has not played since 2015 because of multiple back surgeries. he was slated to compete in the safeway open earlier this month, but withdrew citing a, quote, vulnerable golf game. it's amazing, alex, tiger hasn't been a relevant golfer in four or five years, but we still care he's going to play again, just because he was such a huge star and everyone knows his name. >> minor correction, you care. >> you don't care at all? you're not going to pay attention just to see if he fails? >> i'm going to be watching baseball and after that college football. okay, let's get to this. still ahead, a member of the bush family speculates about who his relatives voted for in the 2016 election. plus, the latest into the new trove of clinton-related e-mails. we'll have all the details coming up next. surprise!!!!! we heard you got a job as a developer! its official, i work for ge!!

their injuries. officials are planning to update the situation at the top of the hour. meantime, pope francis is officially ruling out the possibility of women becoming priests, citing a letter from st. john paul ii as, quote, the last word on the matter. both comments come as something as a surprise since this week he looked to build relations with the lutheran church. nonetheless, pope francis is expected to push other reforms to make the catholic church more inclusive. and hillary clinton and donald trump are sharpening their messages with the election now just six days away. both candidates are warning of dire consequences if the other is elected. and the number of early absentee votes has nearly doubled from four years ago. hillary clinton and her high profile surrogates are out once again in full force, and believe it or not, she will be crossing paths with mike pence in arizona today. ali? with the major shakeup in

the race still settling in, time to look at the polls. after trump took a narrow lead in the washington post/abc news national tracking poll, 46% to 45% for hillary clinton, the reuters/ipsos poll gives clinton a six-point lead. this was a poll taken mostly after new developments in the clinton e-mail investigation. clinton in this poll has 43%, trump 37%, gary johnson at 6%. in north carolina, elon university poll taken before fbi director comey's letter shows the race effectively tied, clinton 42%, trump 41%, three points for gary johnson. turning to missouri, trump has seen a nine-point swing in his direction since mid-october. he's now leading by 14 points, 52% to clinton's 38%. keep an eye out for a new marquette university poll of wisconsin later today. >> okay. despite all of this, yesterday paul ryan said he voted for
2:33 am
donald trump and so did ted cruz in texas. so did george p. bush, the son of jeb bush, but according to the dallas morning news, bush says he's the only member of his family who will be voting straight ticket republican and says his grandfather and uncle george could potentially cast ballots for hillary clinton. he later back tracked with the associated press saying, well, he was just speculating, but in spite of the apparent tightening in polls, some conservatives are having trouble doing just that. robert costa talked to republicans in wisconsin and one man told him, "it's a moral choice, i can't get there. i can't get to trump. i'm a husband and father and i can't convince myself to vote for a person who is weakening the fiber of the country." a 28-year-old stockbroker told him, "you're in a town that's about going to college and raising a family. people are polished and hard working. he's not one of us. adding, i did try." hillary clinton looked to seize on a new report saying donald
2:34 am
trump gained the system avoiding paying personal income taxes. in florida last night, clinton cast trump as not only cheating the irs, but the american people, as well. >> now we know that donald trump meant when he says he was smart for not paying his fair share, he meant that he used what the "new york times" called, and i quote, a legally dubious scheme to avoid paying taxes. even his own high priced lawyers warned him it likely wouldn't fly with the irs, and he took everything, he took everything our great country has to offer, he scoped it up with both hands and paid nothing to support us. >> that's not the only line of attack hillary clinton's using in the final week of the 2016 campaign. hillary clinton is zeroing in on winning over women. in battleground state florida yesterday she commented on the leaked 2005 "access hollywood" tape and the accusations of
2:35 am
sexual misconduct made against donald trump. >> we've got to do more to stop treatment about women being somehow objectified and, oh, my gosh, when we heard that tape and we heard what he does to women, i'm not going to repeat it, but you know what donald trump is bragging about. grabbing women, mistreating women. and i have to tell you, since that tape came out, 12 women have come forward to say what he said on that tape is what he did to me. >> donald trump is categorically denied the sexual assault allegations that hillary clinton referred to. the clinton campaign, meanwhile, released a new ad that highlights some of the comments trump has made about women in the past, using his own words against him. here's part of it. >> putting a wife to work is a very dangerous thing. when i come home and dinner's
2:36 am
not ready, i go through the roof. grab them by the [ bleep ]. when you're a star, they let you do it. you can do anything. i'd look her right in that fat ugly face of hers. she ate like a pig. a person who's flat chested is hard to be a ten. >> you treat women with respect? >> i can't say that either. >> all right, good. >> and clinton got a big assist from some of the most well known men in her party, going directly after trump for the way he treats women. >> i don't think donald trump can look at a woman and really see people. i think he sees, you know, sort of a part person and a part object, but he doesn't see people. >> we have come too far in this country to elect a president who objectifies women, who insults women, who brags about his sexual assaults. that is not the president we need in 2016.
2:37 am
>> i know that my wife is not just my equal, but my superior. i want us -- i want every man out there who's voting to kind of look and ask yourself, if you're having problems with this stuff, how much of it is, you know, we're not used to it? when a guy's ambitious and on the public arena and working hard, that's okay. when a woman suddenly does it, why is she doing that? she has conducted herself so much better in public life than the other guy. that this notion that somehow, oh, you know, it's hard to choose, it shouldn't be. >> well, back to the e-mails, hillary clinton's campaign chairman allegedly wanted to take swift action following the revelations about hillary

clinton's use of a private e-mail server. that's according to the latest batch of e-mails purportedly hacked from the personal account of john podesta. those e-mails have not been independently authenticated by nbc news or verified by the clinton campaign, but the release includes an alleged exchange between podesta and cheryl mills in early march of last year. just hours after the "new york times" report on clinton's server broke. in it podesta purportedly told mills, "we are going to have to dump all those e-mails, so better to do so sooner than later." the ambiguity in the suggestion and the word "dump the e-mails" has fuelled speculation about whether he was talking about releasing or deleting them. what does dump mean here? other hacked e-mails released by wikileaks, as well as released messages from clinton and her inner circle around the time frame of that podesta/cheryl

mills exchange suggest clinton members of her team wanted to release the documents to the public, but that's going to be subject to scrutiny. u.s. attorney general loretta lynch is expressing confidence in james comey after his letter to congress that sent quite the shock wave across the 2016 race. on monday lynch spoke privately to comey, where they agreed to move quickly on the search of new evidence. meanwhile, a source tells politico the e-mail trove on a laptop used by huma abedin may have been missed because the fbi never asked the top aide to turn over all of their devices. the decision left the fbi at least partially dependent. this as the new york times reports that the justice department urged the fbi not to actively pursue cases related to hillary clinton's ties with foreign donors to her family

the documents are heavily redacted and don't appear to shed new light on the case. let's turn to business headlines, where reports are surfacing russia is in the process of ridding its government offices of microsoft software. this comes as microsoft accuses russian hackers of exploiting a recently discovered windows security flaw. cnbc's jeff cutmore joins us from london. this is kind of a hard thing to do, to stop using microsoft software. it's sort of the way everybody in the world does business. >> yeah, absolutely, but it's a long-term plan of president putin to reduce russia's reliance on what it sees as u.s. technology, which is why they say they are going to take the systems out, but i think what should be more worrying for everybody is the spear fishing attacks that have taken place on microsoft operating systems. now, microsoft says they are going to release a patch november 8th, which should prevent any problems with this attempted hacking, but they,
2:42 am
like many others, are blaming a hacking group which is somehow associated with the russian government for carrying these out. i just want to move you on here, we've got a big deal in the newspaper space that's fallen apart. gann et say they are no longer going forward with their $475 million bid for tronc. they blame resistance from tronc, but also a problem putting the financing together here. and one big story for the markets, i'll leave you with this, markets nervous this moment about interest rate hikes. we have a federal reserve meeting announcement today. no interest rate hike expected, but we are looking for guidance on what they do at the december meeting. back to you. >> we, obviously, know rates are going up at some point, so we're looking for clues as to what they say, how fast they'll go up
