hey there, good morning, everyone, it's friday, november 4th, i'm alex witt alongside ali velshi. the campaign enters the final weekend with a race narrowing as election day grows closer. yesterday the candidates' planes crossed each other on a tarmac in north carolina, after donald trump spotted air force one in miami, saying the president should be creating jobs instead of campaigning. president obama will return to new hampshire for hillary clinton on monday. his first campaign stop there since 2012. and later he and first lady michelle obama will join hillary and bill clinton for an election eve rally in philadelphia monday night. hillary clinton and her surrogates are finishing out the campaign with appearances in states the democrats appear to have nailed down, with the nominee headed to michigan and western pennsylvania today, while donald trump will make stops in pennsylvania, new hampshire, nevada, and north

carolina in these final hours. all states that have been leaning toward clinton. >> donald trump staying viable in the states he needs for a path for 270 electoral votes. suffolk university/boston globe poll puts hillary clinton and donald trump at a tie at 42%, while a monmouth university poll in utah shows voters coming off the sidelines, trump now in the lead with 37% to clinton's 31%. utah native evan mcmullin running as an independent polls at 24%. he has been campaigning hard there. and the new nbc/wall street journal marris poll gives trump a comfortable lead in texas. hillary clinton has been campaigning hard in arizona, but our new poll shows her trailing by 5% here, 45% for donald trump, 40% for hillary clinton, gary johnson with 9%. but a tight race in georgia, the

nbc poll puts trump one point ahead of hillary clinton, 45 to 44, gary johnson at 8% there. alex? >> donald trump finished a day of campaign events last night in selma, north carolina, where he appeared with seven medal of honor recipients joining him on stage. he praised their bravery and said they would not approve of hillary clinton as president. >> they are so much more brave than me, i wouldn't have done what they did. i'm brave in other ways, financially brave, big deal, right? these are real brave. i saw somebody back stage, you think i could take this guy in a fight, you think i could take him? they all said no. i agree, okay. when i look at these great admirabad admirals, generals, medal of honor recipients behind me, to

think of her being their boss, i don't think so. and, you know, they are incredible patriots, they would never say a thing, but i know what they are thinking, it's not for them. believe me. >> the women closest to donald trump are helping make his closing arguments for him. yesterday ivanka trump campaigned for him in new hampshire, a state where the latest public polling is beginning to close in his favor, but for the first time his wife melania campaigned solo in the tony philadelphia suburbs and introduced by mike pence's wife karen. trump shared her story of her journey to the united states and her aspirations if she were to become first lady, saying she would be an advocate for women and children. >> our culture has gotten too mean and too rough. we have to find a better way to talk to each other, to disagree with each other, to respect each

other. we must find better ways to honor and support the basic goodness of our children, especially in social media. it will be one of the main focuses of my work, if i'm privileged enough to become your first lady. in battleground north carolina, hillary clinton made an appeal to african-american voters. more democrats have voted than republicans, but african-american turnout has fallen compared to 2012. in raleigh, clinton was joined by two high profile supporters, senator bernie sanders and singer pharrell williams. at a rally, clinton criticized donald trump for his treatment of the african-american community. >> someone who thinks the lives of black people are all crime and poverty and despair. he has no idea, none, remember how he denied housing?

and may wasn't alone. whenever african-americans tried to rent an apartment, their application was marked with a "c," "c" for color. in fact, donald, his father fred, and their entire company were sued by the justice department for discriminating against african-americans and latinos in the 1970s. they settled the case, but the justice department was forced to go after them agn, because they continued to discriminate against people of color. just a few days ago, donald trump was endorsed by the official newspaper of the ku klux klan. they wrote his endorsement, make america great again. they said it's about preserving white identity, and they've placed their faith and hope in

him. do any of us have a place in trump's america? another recent example is the way donald trump treated what are called the central park 5. to him, those kids will still and always be guilty, no matter what the evidence says. do we want this man appointing judges? >> chelsea clinton campaigned for her mother in milwaukee yesterday to keep wisconsin blue. she spoke about health care, the world she wants her children to grow up in, and she accused donald trump of helping to mainstream fringe values. >> i do believe that everything is on the ballot. i believe our core values are on the ballot, because i certainly never thought i would see in my lifetime the almost normalization of hate speech that seems to be kind of the main calling card of donald trump and his campaign. the racism, the sexism, the

islam phobia, the homophobia, the anti-semitism, the demeaning rhetoric against our veterans, against americans with disabilities, against americans with mental health challenges. none of that represents the country that i want to live in, and it certainly doesn't represent the country i want any of our children to grow up in. >> president obama continues his bid to stop donald trump from becoming president. both the president and trump campaigned in battleground florida yesterday, both campaigning in jacksonville. the president slamming trump's treatment of women and workers, once again mocked him as thin skinned. >> the choice could not be clearer, because donald trump -- don't boo! don't boo! don't boo! anybody who is upset about a

"saturday night live" skit, you don't want in charge of nuclear weapons. i mean, that's the thing that bothers you, and you want to be president of the united states? come on, man. let me tell you something about this office that i've been in for eight years. who you are, what you are, does not change after you occupy the oval office. all it does is magnify who you are. all it does is shine a spotlight on who you are. if you disrespected women before you were in office, you will disrespect women as president. so you can't make excuses for this stuff. this isn't a joke. this isn't survivor. this isn't the bachelorette. >> and i just left, by the way,

miami, and in leaving i see air force one. so i said to myself, i wonder who that could be. he's down here campaigning for crooked hillary. now, why isn't he back in the office, sometimes referred to as the oval office, why? why isn't he back working? he's campaigning every day, and i actually think, considering she's under criminal investigation, i think he's actually got a conflict. >> ali, the president is back on the trail today making two stops in north carolina. >> hillary clinton's running mate tim kaine made history on the campaign trail yesterday at a rally in phoenix, arizona, he made an appeal to latino voters by delivering a campaign speech entirely in spanish, a first for a candidate on a presidential ticket. he also held a rally in tucson last night, where he told supporters that arizona is in play this year.

>> normally in a presidential year, arizona's not that competitive, but guess what, you guys have made it competitive. your energy, your spirit, and it drives a few people kind of batty that you're doing what you're doing, but thank god for you doing what you're doing. >> senator tom cotton is breaking with some fellow republicans, announcing he won't get behind their plan to permanently block any supreme court justices nomineed if hillary clinton wins the election. speaking with politico yesterday, he said he would keep an open mind to whoever clinton picks. he stressed, though, he's not likely to confirm a clinton pick, given what she's said about the type of justices she'd select. cotton's comments follow john mccain and ted cruz's comments they would block a clinton pick or the court should remain at eight justices. speaking in arizona last night,

mccain told the crowd, this election is critical for the supreme court's future. >> i many friends, i believe that we must keep a majority in the united states senate, and one of the reasons is, is there could be as many as three supreme court justices that will be in the next four years. we have to have a senate who will prevent that 4-4 split from tilting to the left and making decisions that will harm this nation for decades to come. >> in fact, senator richard burr is adding his support to mccain and cruz's plan, telling a crowd last weekend he'd work to keep scalia's seat open. meanwhile, the heritage foundation is backing their plan to keep the court at eight justices and is raising money for that cause. still ahead this morning, the latest unemployment report, the last one before the 2016 election. we'll take a look at which of the last six presidencies saw the largest number of average annual job gains. plus, the city of chicago is

i'm new here, so you may not know this. the first friday of every month is one of the most exciting days to me. it's the day that the labor department releases the unemployment report for the prior month. today's is the last one before the election. let me tell you where things stand right now. right now, you can see at the bottom, unemployment stands at 5% nationwide. that is down from a high of 10% back in october of 2009, but take a look at what it was in october of 2008. the recession was under way, but everybody wasn't feeling it back then, 6.5%, so we're doing well on the unemployment front. let's take a look at a few other measures, though, median household income, the point of which half all families earn

more and half earn less. this is adjusted for inflation. in today's dollars back in 2008 you could see it was $57,400. today it's $56,516. actually 2015, that's the latest year for which we have numbers. you can see it's a little lower than it was back when president obama took office. now, we talk a lot about jobs created under a president. this is the last six presidents and these are the number of jobs that were created annually as an average. you can see under president carter 2.5 million, 2 million, george h.w. bush, 659,000, look at clinton, 2.8 million per year. george bush only 160,000, and if things stay steady, about 1. million per year under obama. when you think about it, these are the numbers you have to think about. do you want four more years or not. could go either way on this. >> what about the gas prices, ali, that's like a tax cut or something. >> if you have kids and you have parents and you're taking care of them, those prices have gone

a lot higher. that's like a tax on you. look at prices of gas. in july of 2008, gas prices were amongst their highest of $4.11 a gallon. now it's at $2.22. so if you're a big commuter, this is a big saving for you. that's part of what you're looking at, as well. none of this has anything to do with the president, it's just how you feel. >> fascinating with the job growth. really interesting numbers, thank you for that. bill, now it explains why ali was bouncing into work at 3:00 a.m. jobs report. now good to know. >> we need to bring the tranquillizers in the first friday of every month. >> weather, what do we have? >> everything is a-okay. the election forecast is looking about as good and as warm as we've had on an election day. temperatures on tuesday in the 60s in the great lakes, wisconsin looks fantastic, virginia, north carolina, all of the northeast. i mean, we're in this amazingly warm and unusual weather pattern. as we head down into the south, swing state of florida looks good, looks dry. only wet weather tuesday is

areas of texas, oklahoma, and louisiana. this will be with showers and maybe an occasional thunderstorm. nothing that's going to stop anyone from getting out and voting. as we head to our western states, arizona is looking fantastic, 88 beautiful degrees. will be wet weather in the northwest, but nothing that's going to stop you from daily plans. our friends in alaska are cold, but that's typical for this time of year and hawaii looks fine. election day forecast, simple, four days out, easy forecast. no challenges at all. let's take you to today, we are watching a little rain early this morning around norfolk and eastern north carolina. that's going to clear out. it's a chilly morning in new england, so you will need the coats for the kids, but later this afternoon, nice in the 50s, pretty warm in the southeast, not record highs, but this forecast is ridiculous. typically this time of year it's around 48 degrees in minneapolis. it's 67 on saturday, chicago at 67, and the weather for the parade today looks fantastic, too. no problems there either. on sunday we have the new york city marathon and 55 degrees and

former teammates. kevin durant and russell westbrook meeting for the first time as opponents after eight seasons together in oklahoma city. the players avoided each other before the tip-off, opting to let their play do the talking. durant scored 29 in the first half alone, finishes with a game high 39. how's this for a stat, he match add league record for most points by a player in his first game against a former team, along with a career high of seven three-pointers. meanwhile, westbrook is held to just 20 in the game as the warriors rout the thunder 122-96. has it quite sunk in yet, the chicago cubs world series champions. many fans waiting their entire lives to hear those words, and it couldn't be better for the sport of baseball. here's the numbers. more than 40 million americans tuned in to watch wednesday night's thrilling game seven finale, making it the most watched baseball game in a quarter century, 25 years.

the only two to beat that mark were games six and seven in the 1991 world series between the atlanta braves and the minnesota twins. meanwhile, cubs fans are snatchin up as many of the city's newspaper as they can, prompting publications to add hundreds of thousands of copies to the normal circulation numbers. at the end of the day, the tribune printed about a million copies of thursday's edition, while "the sun times" put out 600,000 extra, eight times the normal amount. in a victory parade set today, the team will make its way from wrigley field towards downtown chicago for the noon rally, but there's at least one cubs fan who won't make it out for the festivities. a spokesman for steve bartman, the infamous man blamed for the drought after interfering with a foul ball, he told "usa today" bartman was overjoyed the cubs won, but does not intent to crash the parade. can we leave the guy alone now? >> it's enough, it's enough.

i'm ali velshi alongside alex witt. it is the bottom of the hour, let's start with the top stories. the s&p is now on its longest losing streak since the economic downturn of 2008. the index lost .4 of a percent yesterday. it's the eighth straight day on the decline. more on what's driving the markets in a moment. investors will return to the south carolina property this morning where 30-year-old kala brown, missing since august, was found alive, held captive, chained inside a container. officials believe four bodies may also be buried on the property. the owner, a sex offender, has been taken into custody. brown's boyfriend, who disappeared around the same time, is still missing. u.s. department of education has hit penn state with a record 2.4 million fine for failing to report crimes or warn the public in the jerry sandusky sexual abuse scandal. the government says penn state gave sandusky unfettered access

to the campus, knowing that he posed a danger. the university says it's now in compliance with the required reporting procedures. take a look at battleground state visits by the numbers so far. trump and clinton have spent most of their time in florida, north carolina, pennsylvania, and ohio. trump outpaces clinton when it comes to numbers of stops in those states. both candidates return to ohio and pennsylvania today, trump adds stops in arizona and new hampshire, clinton adds michigan. alex? >> well, with four days to go until americans cast their votes, the federal government is preparing for a fight over hackers potentially meddling with the election. nbc news has learned the government has taken new steps over the possibility of cyber attacks either from at home or abroad with the would-be attackers already carrying out a potential rehearsal. senior investigative correspondent cynthia mcfadden has more. >> reporter: officials in the department of homeland security, the military, and the intelligence community tell nbc

news the u.s. government is gearing up for an unprecedented effort to protect the country on election day. according to multiple intelligence sources, u.s. officials are deeply concerned about and preparing for some sort of cyber chaos next week. current and former officials say an attack on critical infrastructure, including the u.s. power grid, is one of three worst case concerns. one highly placed intelligence source told nbc news, your vote is safe, you just might not have any lights. also on the worry list, a large scale denial of service. in other words, part of the internet goes down. or a cyber attack to disable communications and transportation in swing states. but intelligence sources and a senior obama national security official tell nbc news they believe a more likely scenario is that hackers from russia or elsewhere will try to manipulate twitter, facebook, and other

social media platforms to sew confusion and chaos. a parallel concern is an 11th hour release of fake documents implicating one of the candidates in an explosive way without time for it to be fact checked. and it isn't just the russians. multiple intelligence and law enforcement officials tell nbc news that concern is just as much about nonstate actors, hackers, political activists, and criminal mischief makers. while multiple intelligence officials tell nbc they have no specific warning about an election day attack, they also say they consider the massive and sophisticated internet disruption last month a rehearsal or an inspiration for the real thing. >> the activity that occurred on the 21st of october has definitely been seen by many in cyber security field as potentially a drill associated with a real event. it had all the signs of what you

would consider a drill to be. >> reporter: intelligence sources tell nbc news the united states has communicated red lines to the russians through diplomatic and back channels regarding just how seriously any cyber attack would be viewed by the u.s. >> our thanks to cynthia mcfadden for that report. hillary clinton won't say whether she'll ask for fbi director james comey's resignation if elected president. she avoided the question during an interview with sirius xm's joe madison in a preview clip released yesterday. the conversation comes a week after comey decided to tell congress that his agency was investigating newly discovered e-mails related to clinton. here's her response when asked about keeping comey onboard. >> i'm not going to either get ahead of myself by assuming i'll be fortunate enough to be elected. that's really up to you and your listeners. people have to turn out or nothing that i'm going to be proposing will come into

reality. but i also would never comment on any kind of, you know, personnel issue. >> while campaigning in north carolina yesterday, clinton mocked donald trump's temperament and these remarks that he made on the trail on wednesday. >> a lot of very, very big poll numbers coming down over the last few days. you've seen it. we are going to win the white house. we'll win it. it's feeling like it already, isn't it? we've got to be nice and cool, nice and cool. all right, stay on point, donald, stay on point. no side tracks, donald. nice and easy. because i've been watching hillary the last few days. she's totally on a hinge. we don't want any of that. >> donald stood on a stage and said, and i quote, i'm honored to have the greatest temperament that anyone's ever had.

he knows we can see and hear him, right? this is someone who at another rally yesterday actually said out loud to himself, stay on point, donald. stay on point. his campaign probably put that in the teleprompter. stay on point, donald. stay on point. >> a new investigation into donald trump's financial documents suggest the republican nominee's income isn't always what he reports it to be. according to "the new york times," which examines several of trump's tax appeals, trump appears to have used a loophole that allows him to list gross revenue and not net income after expenses on disclosure forms. the records examined represent income coming in before deducting costs, such as mortge and payments and payroll. thus, according to the times, some of trump's businesses make a fraction of what is reported on his disclosure forms.

for example, in 2014 for his doral golf resort in florida, trump reported revenues of $50 million, but after deducting operating costs, the resort actually lost $2.4 million. a trump spokeswoman declined to answer question about how trump reports his income and stated the disclosure forms speak for itself. the times does state it's virtually impossible to determine from the forms just how much trump is earning in any year. alex? >> okay. bernie sanlders hit the trail yesterday for hillary clinton, claiming to voters this election is ultimately not about either major party candidate. >> despite what you see on the evening news and on tv, elections in a democracy or this particular election is not about hillary clinton. it is not about donald trump. it is not about bill clinton, and it's not about mrs. trump or the trump kids. this election, unbelievably, is

about you. this election is not a personality contest. you don't like mr. trump, you don't like mrs. clinton, fine. what this election is about is which candidate has the ideas and the program to improve life for the working families and the middle class of this country. that's what this election is about. >> well, we have seen a phone bank for the republican party and by extension donald trump. yesterday we saw ted cruz do something at one time few would have predicted. he stood behind a podium with trump emblazoned on it, and yet during his remarks he did not mention the party nominee once, instead asking the people of iowa to send a republican to the white house. when the rally was over, he bordered a plane bearing the trump name. smiled, waved.

it was an argument not lost on the senator of texas. >> if you care about free speech, religious liberty, and the second amendment, then this election, putting a republican in the white house and keeping a republican senate is the whole enchada. >> you just said you look forward to calling mr. pence mr. vice president. do you look forward to calling mr. trump president? >> i'm here campaigning for donald trump. i'm getting ready to get on a gigantic airplane with trump on the side of it. on monday of this week i voted for donald trump, i voted for mike pence. i'm doing everything i can to defeat hillary clinton and keep a republican majority in the senate. and mitt romney campaigned alongside john mccain, and like cruz, he said the republicans must hold the senate to keep the 4-4 split from tilting leftward, and here's what he said about the presidential race. >> i don't know who's going to win the presidency, but i know this, whoever wins is going to

need somebody who's been to the middle east time and time and time again and understands what's going on there, a person who understands what vladimir putin really is, a person who understands what's happening in asia and the south china sea, a person that understands our military and the needs of our veterans, a person who understands how america is the hope of millions and billions throughout the world, and that man is john mccain, one in a million. >> one glaring difference between the republicans and democrats, the extent to which hillary clinton campaigned with senate candidates and touted them on the stump, whereas trump has been alongside relatively few, and yet republicans are increasingly bullish on keeping the senate. a new poll shows marco rubio with a six-point lead over democratic challenger patrick murphy, though other recent surveys have shown it closer. katy mcginty up over toomey in pennsylvania, and in north carolina, ross leads burr 49% to 45%. look at the new hampshire senate race and the real clear politics

average, the latest polls show a recovery for a republican senator kelly ayotte in a matchup that's gone back and forth for months now. in a new boston globe/suffolk poll, ayotte up 2%. in a new wbur poll, ayotte is up 51% to 45%. bayh seeking his senate seat in indiana, politico reported he charged $2,000 in travel expenses in 2009 to his official senate account staying in indianapolis hotels, despite owning a condo there. he says he will repay the money and the reimbursements were not allowed under gnat rules. the final job report before the election. economists predict about 175,000 new jobs were added last month. that's about 20,000 more than september. the unemployment rate is expected to tick down a tenth of a percent to 4.9%.

also driving the markets this morning, the curveball thrown to britain's plan to exit the european union. a senior court ruled that theresa may will be forced to get parliament's approval before she can trigger article 50 by the end of march. joining us live from london, steve, we're seeing a market reaction, we saw the pound surge, article 50, obviously, is the formal process to deagain the withdrawal from the european union. >> you mentioned the curveball, absolutely spot-on. we came into the week worried about the payroll, we're certainly worried about the u.s. election and, of course, the oil prices falling at the same time. four big factors. we're finishing the week with this absolute curveball from the uk high court saying, no, you need parliamentary support, which has thrown up in the air the government strategy, as well. the pound surge, the dollar earnings fell, the rest of the market falling aggressively. we were trading 7,000 on the

ftse, so it's all up in the air and the whole brexit discussion, which we thought was done, it's up in the air again, ali. >> steve, explain this to me, if you're a member of parliament in the united kingdom, this ruling, unless overruled by the supreme court, you have to vote on brexit. great, we have a chance to reverse this thing that could be a disaster, but if they vote against the will of the people, they could lose their seats in the next election. >> oh, absolutely, ali, on their head, london voted to stay in and scotland voted to stay in. apart from that, the whole of england on its own voted to come out, pretty much give or take one or two exceptions. if they want to stay in the eu, if they vote against what the people wanted, as you say, there's a very high chance if there were a general election, which could come up, they will be voted out. it is an absolute mess, ali. >> all right, no boredom for you

in the uk. good to see you, steve sedgwick in london for us. one other business headline, starbucks is celebrating its most profitable fiscal year on record, probably thanks to you and the coffee you buy. an annual 11% jump in revenue, but same-store sales, sales in stores that existed a year ago missed expectations, this comes as starbucks expands in new markets like cambodia and trinidad. china is also a major focus. the company plans to build 2,500 stores there over the next five years. the phenomenon, alex, still gets me. the number of people in line to pay more money for a cup of coffee than they've ever paid. >> i think you called me out, i'm single handedly responsible for that jump in annual revenue. still ahead, new information on the attack that claimed the lives of two more service members. plus the latest from syria, where russia's warning those in aleppo to leave the besieged

we're learning more about the events surrounding the deaths of two u.s. service members in afghanistan yesterday. the soldiers who were on a train, advise, and assist mission came under heavy fire while on a night raid of a taliban target. afghan special forces then called in air strikes to defend themselves and fight back those militants. an official telling nbc news the government is now in control of the area for afghani forces members were killed. as many as 30 civilians were also killed and officials say many of them were children. civilians and rebels in aleppo are being warned today's humanitarian pause is their last chance to escape before what one syrian army fighter tells nbc news will be, quote, all-out war from syrian and russian forces. the kremlin announced a

moratorium on air strikes until 7:00 p.m. tonight. critics say the window is not long enough for those looking to escape. rebel fighters in eastern aleppo have refused to withdraw, ali? >> that's in syria. let's turn to iraq and the battle for mosul. iraqi forces have opened up a major artery for tens of thousands of residents in the city to escape. remember, there were more than 2 million people living in that city. there are believed to be more than a million there now. this is happening as iraqi forces continue to clear neighborhoods of isis control inside eastern aleppo. nbc news foreign correspondent matt bradley joins us now from erbil, iraq, with more. good morning, matt. >> reporter: thanks, ali. as we've been reporting for the past couple of days, iraqi security forces have managed to penetrate the outer areas of mosul and are now fighting within the city itself. this is a pretty big development, and it means they are actually pressing into the city from more than one direction. they are coming from the east

and from the south, and they are managing to breach some of islamic state's more medieval defenses, including a moat filled with burning oil. iraqi security forces generals are saying they expect some of the isis militants are going to be yielding their positions in the east of the city, what they call the left bank, and moving to the right bank, which is actually on the west part of the city, where they have more defensive ramparts and the warns of the streets of the old city that they can use to defend themselves. this battle still could go on for quite a long time, weeks and weeks, and what the iraqi security forces are really going to be coming up against is what you mentioned, ali, the 1.2 million civilians still left in the city, and as we know, isis has a tendency to use them as human shields, so we're still looking at weeks of bloody fighting. ali? >> not going to be easy, matt bradley, thanks so much.
