the search for relief often leads here.s,
12:01 pm
introducing drug-free aleve direct therapy. a high intensity tens device that uses technology once only in doctors' offices. for deep penetrating relief at the source. new aleve direct therapy. right now, the final three days of this historic election. hillary clinton and donald trump kicked off a busy day in florida. the candidates fanning out across america making their closing arguments. >> are you ready? how many of you have already voted? >> in three days, we are going to win the great state of north carolina. and we are going to win back the white house. >> i was with jay-z and beyonce.
12:02 pm
>> hillary clinton has all these celebrities and failed politicians out campaigning for her and she has crowds so much smaller than ours it. just have me, but i have my family. >> early voting sites busy across the country. we'll have live reports from north carolina, ohio and florida. also ahead, a new report of mother jones says the democratic national committee found evidence its headquarters was bugged. we'll talk to the reporter who broke that story and get reaction from the dnc. and a very good saturday afternoon. i'm kristin welker live from the mann center of performing arts in philadelphia, my hometown. hillary clinton will hend her day with an open air concert
12:03 pm
featuring katy perry and stevie wonder. the crowd has been building all day long. with three days to go until election day, here's the state of the race right now. take a look. our partners at target smart say nearly 40 million people cast their votes early. more than 18 million have come from the 12 battleground states. hillary clinton is leading in the latest national polls. one shows secretary clinton with a four-point lead. another with a two-point lead and another shows her one point ahead, narrow margins there. clinton and donald trump held rallies today in the critical state of florida where the average of the latest polls gives clinton a one-point lead. donald trump held a rally in another critical state, north carolina. that's where the average of latest polls gives him a one-point lead. he is heading to nevada and colorado. secretary clinton heads here to philadelphia. their running mates are out today. mike pence in michigan and tim kaine in florida. secretary clinton has an army of
12:04 pm
surrogates out today, including her husband and daughter. vice president biden and bernie sanders. our nbc news correspondents are covering it for us here for the clinton campaign. we now know secretary clinton will be making her final campaign stops before election day in florida, ohio, new hampshire and here in pennsylvania. bill clinton is also in florida today going from jacksonville to gainesville as part of his stronger together bus tour. the clinton campaign is trying to build on the momentum on display last night in cleveland with the help of beyonce and jay-z. >> we have to think about the future of our daughters, our sons, and vote for someone who cares for them as much as we do. and that is why i'm with her. >> i want to grow up in a world where my daughter has no limitation. our daughter has no limitations. she feels like she can be whatever she wants to be in the
12:05 pm
world. this other guy, i don't have any ill will towards him, but his conversation is devisive. that's not an evolved soul to me he cannot be my president. >> it was quite a show last night. kelly o'donnell is covering the clinton campaign and joins me here in philadelphia where we are now waiting secretary clinton's rally tonight with katy perry, stevie wonder. >> it's an all-star weekend. >> what strikes me is a tale of two campaigns. you have secretary clinton, all her top political surrogates, but she's got an all-star lineup. donald trump said i don't need those big names to get big crowds. what do you think that brings to the table? does it matter? >> it is a stark difference and tells us about the story of the campaign we already lived. for the clinton side, every card they have in the deck, let's play it. those super surrogates from the current president, former president, all that star power can be effective. they speak to their own
12:06 pm
consistencies. they have their own history with voerts. with celebrities, there is reflected glory. fans want to participate in the experience at these events. democrats typically have more celebrity star power. for donald trump, he is trying to make a point that although he is absent these big sur gates, he can stand alone. for hillary clinton, it's a lot about key states she should own trying to hold that. and to block donald trump when he's trying to make inroads. his only map to 270 gets him into places where he's got to flip a battleground. >> he's making a real play for michigan. you have her here in philadelphia tonight. she has that big rally on monday night with president obama, the first lady and former president bill clinton. what does it say that she is trying to defend these traditionally blue states? pennsylvania obviously has been considered a battleground but
12:07 pm
more purple in recent years. >> yes. michigan is more of a surprise. that reflects the demographics donald trump has been trying to play to throughout this whole campaign. trying to find those voters who are not necessarily a part of the economy as we see it today. he's pushing hard there. he's going to have a surrogate like sarah palin going there. we have not seen her on the campaign trail. she is expected to be there tomorrow. for hillary clinton you have a chance to see her in a way we don't often. there was rain in florida today. there's a little clip about how she tried to close it out, her closing argument. you could say blame it on the rain. >> let's get out. let's vote for the future. let's vote for what we want for our country and our children and grandchildren. god bless you! >> there won't be any voices left by tuesday. it's tough to go through the final hours. it's all adrenalin for them.
12:08 pm
they can't wake up on wednesday morning and we hope it's wednesday and not after wednesday, feeling like they didn't put everything out there. we see that certainly in evidence from the clinton side with all their star power, political and otherwise. and for trump just trying to be the big personality, as big as he can be over the next couple of days. >> kelly o'donnell, my fellow road warrior, we are not going to get much sleep either. we won't have much of a voice left come wednesday. >> no. >> trump has a jam-packed campaign schedule. 11 rallies in eight states. an aide tells nbc news michigan or pennsylvania is the priority for surpassing the 270 electoral vote threshold. trump's denver campaign office has been vandalized twice in 24 hours. katy tur joins us from wilmington, north carolina. great to see you, as always, my
12:09 pm
fellow road warrior. he was joined by his wife melania. there was a tender moment there. she is trying to go after those women voters who are going to be critical. he's got to narrow that gap with secretary clinton. >> absolutely. especially in pennsylvania where we saw melania last week. this is the second time we've seen melania on the campaign trail in just a week. she did give a speech to the republican national convention. she's appeared by his side a couple of times. speaking is a new thing to have her do on the campaign trail. she spoke for a few minutes. introduced her husband. then the two of them embraced. this comes on not the same day but a day after the "wall street journal" came out with a new report that said the national inquirer paid a woman $150,000 to tell her story about having an affair with donald trump in 2007 when melania trump -- 2006, excuse me, when melania trump
12:10 pm
and donald trump were already married. the inquirer shielding donald trump from that allegation. nbc news has not verified that allegation. the trump campaign has flatly denied it, but it is interesting to see melania trump on the trail. they need to capture that female vote. they are not going to diminish the gap. they need to mitigate the negative effects of losing women in such large numbers. they believe melania trump is someone to help do that. she gave a noted anti-bullying speech in pennsylvania. raised eyebrows for that because she said the rhetoric in this country has gotten too cruel, when her husband's campaign has been basically built on insults and trashing his opponents and anybody who gets in the way of his message. >> she did raise a lot of eyebrows with that statement. i want to ask you about this new
12:11 pm
strategy from the trump campaign. he is making a real play for michigan and pennsylvania. he needs to win one of those states to get to the 270 electoral votes he needs. what are you hearing about this strategy? how confident is the campaign they can get there? >> the campaign says they are very confident. they are hopeful about michigan. they said the polls are closing there. they do need to turn one blue state red if they have a solid path to 270 without any massive surprises out there. michigan might be potentially their best hope. they are going to go to minnesota, which is confusing. president obama won that state by eight points. some say he should focus more on michigan, potentially nevada where don ralston is reporting early vote totals are not looking good for republicans. they are going to michigan. they are going to have a
12:12 pm
difficult time because there is a large african-american population in michigan. donald trump is not polling well among that community. >> let me ask you about the african-american community. our latest poll showed that donald trump was poll iing 7% among african-american voters. he has a different take. i think we don't have that. let me give you a sense of what he said. he said it seems to be the big surprise so far this election, blacks for trump. thank you, fellows, that's so great. his campaign in conversations saying they think they are going to surprise a lot of people with how much support donald trump gets among african-americans what are you hearing? what is the campaign telling you about that? >> they've been saying that for quite some time. his rallies are predominantly
12:13 pm
caucasian. occasionally there is a handful of minority supporters, african-american supporters. we see them often in florida. it's a group of guys that follow him from stop to stop. generally, they are the same group of guys. the campaign says they are going to do much better with african-americans. we'll have to see how the polls bear that out. they had been saying they do expect to get double digits among the african-american community. more than 10%. we are not seeing that in polls. there is little evidence to support that at donald trump's own campaign rallies. the campaign is saying that is something that is going to happen. we'll find out if it does bear out tuesday. >> we will indeed. the great katy tur. thank you so much. great reporting always. appreciate it. >> thank you, kristin. >> the trump campaign has a new two-minute tv ad airing nationwide. the campaign calling it a closing argument to the american people. take a look.
12:14 pm
>> all the people brave enough to vote out this corrupt establishment is you, the american people. i'm doing this for the people and the movement, and we will take back this country for you and we will make america great again. >> i'd like to bring in jason miller, senior communications advisor for the trump campaign. great to see you. >> thank you for having me. >> we are three days out from election day. you see that ad there. i'm going to give you the chance to define what trump's closing strategy is with these final days left in the campaign. >> mr. trump is taking a message of change. he's closing out this campaign, talking about how he will get our economy back on track, drain the swamp and bring ethic reforms to washington, d.c. >> is he going to stay on message? he has been staying on message largely. is that critical to him pulling off a win? >> you see a movement in the polls. that is a reflection of mr.
12:15 pm
trump taking a positive message. obamacare is another big one mr. trump has been talking about. it's important to point out as we go into this final weekend, mr. trump is the only candidate who has a positive message getting people something, not just someone to be for. that's why you're seeing a number of these states that have been traditionally blue or purple. talking about colorado where it's dead even or michigan. blue states like new hampshire and new mexico, where our numbers show we're in the lead. >> we learned today you added stops in minnesota and michigan. the latest polling shows clinton is ahead six points in michigan, eight points in minnesota. you only have three days left. do you have time to come from behind? >> we do. we are seeing a real movement
12:16 pm
here. there is some energy, momentum coming down the track. this is different than secretary clinton's campaign which she is largely relying on jay-z and beyonce to trip her up across the finish line. as we see going through core battleground states, florida, north carolina, ohio, all states looking good for mr. trump. iowa where we believe he is going to win. he's on the plane heading out to nevada. he'll finish up in colorado where just yesterday republicans surpass democrats for ballots returned. if he wins colorado, that's likely going to decide the election. here's the thing. even aside from colorado, we look at new mexico which has been solidly blue state where mr. trump is currently leading. the reason we added on minnesota is because the numbers we are seeing as of last night had mr. trump only behind by three points. >> the last time minnesota went
12:17 pm
red was 1972. isn't a state like minnesota and pennsylvania here a little bit of fool's gold for republicans? this state has certainly gotten that reputation in recent years. republicans tend to make a last-minute play for it. it winds up going blue. >> this is the beauty. he has completely redefined the map. whether it be minnesota, michigan, pennsylvania. all states hit hard by manufacturing and job losses. people who are frustrated with secretary clinton for not doing anything to secure the border. the unrest in the middle east. people want a change. donald trump is the candidate who can do that. >> john ralston tweeted this about battle grande state. trump is dead, gop in big
12:18 pm
trouble in nevada senate. what do you make of that? do you accept that? is trump dead in nevada? >> not at all. jon ralston seems a fine enough gentleman, but i wouldn't hire him to figure out our pathway to victory. >> he is there on the ground. he talked about the fact they extended the voting hours because the lines are so long there. a lot of folks lined up are latino voters saying they are voting democratic. >> we are ahead right now where mitt romney was four years ago. our projections show on election day there will be enough to carry us over the finish line. all the energy and momentum which is mr. trump. we feel very good about the way this is coming together. going back to my earlier point, it's this positive message down the home stretch. only mr. trump has. there isn't a positive message with secretary clinton. you saw it with our two-minute ad. this will be her down fall.
12:19 pm
>> i want to get your reaction to something with the associated press reporting mr. trump's wife melania has insisted she's always been in this country legally and never violated immigration laws. there is an ap article that says melania trump was paid for modeling jobs in the united states worth $20,000 that occurred in the seven weeks before she had legal permission to work in the country. that is according to detailed accounting ledgers. does that not undercut donald trump's message on immigration? >> you read our response which is medical thannia trump came to this country legally. all her paperwork is in order. she is proud to be a united states citizen. she is going to make a fantastic first lady. one point i'd make, i think this is a sad reflection of where politics are as we enter the final three days of this campaign. you have a clinton campaign so
12:20 pm
desperate to change the subject away from the fact stlr multiple fbi investigations -- >> that's not the clinton campaign. that's the associated press. >> people are pushing these stories. it's sad. >> all right. >> and there is an investigation into the clinton foundation. there is a shadow hanging over the clinton campaign. i would rather be where our positive message is. melania trump is fantastic. she will be great as a first lady and we are excited. >> jason miller, thank you for taking us inside your strategy today. appreciate it. democrats are calling for the justice department to investigate whether the fbi is looking at information that could benefit donald trump. congressman elijah cummings and john conyers wrote yesterday saying it is unacceptable for the fbi to leak unsubstantiated and in some cases false information about one presidential candidate to
12:21 pm
benefit other candidates. the letter cited rudy giuliani who told fox news he heard about a new fbi review from former fbi agents. joining me new york democratic congressman carolyn maloney. thank you for being here. >> thank you for having me. if you want change, i never thought i'd have the honor of being able to vote for such a competent woman for president of the united states. what bigger change than that? the empowerment of half the population. a role model. there's already young women telling me they see a life of more leadership roles based on the fact she is running for president and may be our next president. i hope she is. >> that is something we are hearing from a number of her surrogates and beyonce said last night. the fact you have this request for a justice department investigation. what specifically do you want to come from that investigation? what do you think it will show?
12:22 pm
>> i think it's reasonable to ask for an investigation. i agree with bernie sanders. i think the american voters, enough with these e-mails. i think everybody's gotten beyond them. if comey is going to talk about looking at more e-mails in the clinton campaign, he should also talk about the leaks and allegations on the trump campaign, of which there are many on the trump foundation, on whether or not one of his employees was involved with russia. it doesn't look like fairness. when he didn't really define and put out what it was, it just allowed the trump campaign to build in all kinds of allegations and innuendos. one thing both campaigns agree on, he should put all the information out on both campaigns and all these issues. >> let me ask you about
12:23 pm
something that did raise eyebrows. rudy giuliani, one of donald trump's top surrogates and advisors saying two days before comey came out with his news, he was anticipating a bombshell. chris matthews asked him last night on "hardball." >> i had no idea jim comey was going to do what he was going to do the day that he did it, nor did i ever think he was going to do it. what i did know about, which is quite true for about four months, is that the fbi was very, very upset about the way jim comey handled the case. i heard that from former fbi agents, not from current fbi agents. i haven't spoken to a current fbi agent, i don't think in the last nine months. >> congresswoman, he says he didn't know about it. >> he's changing his tune. two days earlier he said the opposite. as a former prosecutor, he knows better than anyone that you
12:24 pm
can't use former fbi agents to recycle and interpret news that you allege you're getting from fbi agents. the fbi is supposed to be above partisan politics. it should be above reproach. and coming out with information on one campaign and not the other campaign, when the rumors are flying, innuendos are there, and he should come out with the information on both campaigns. >> to be fair, he said he had a sense there was going to be more information that came out about this topic, which has gotten so much attention. isn't it possible that that is the case? that he had a sense something more would come out and he hadn't spoken to the fbi? >> i think that's the reason for the investigation. i think it deserves to be investigated. there were allegations and leaks coming from the fbi. are they real leaks? where are they coming from?
12:25 pm
who was doing it? there should not be leaks from one of our premier law and order organizations this close to a campaign. you shouldn't have the head of it coming out making announcements on one campaign but not the other. fairness says equal treatment to both campaigns. personally, i don't think you should have commented on anything this close to an election, but he did. let's hear his assessments on the trump campaign. >> congresswoman carolyn maloney. thank you for your time and insight today. appreciate it. >> thank you. next, i'll talk live with david corn and his exclusive reporting the dnc found evidence its headquarters was bugged. live from philadelphia ahead of a concert starring katy perry and stevie wonder. but i'm calling about that credit scorecard. give it. sure! it's free for everyone. oh! well that's nice! and checking your score won't hurt your credit.

12:29 pm
an exclusive report from mother jones claiming, "the democratic national committee told the fbi it found evidence its headquarters was bugged." the story quotes dnc officials saying they found the evidence during the security sweep by a private firm. dnc officials reportedly told mother jones the contractor found a radio signal near the chairman's office that indicated there might be a listening device outside that office no device was recovered, no possible culprits were identified. the dnc declined to confirm or deny that report. a democratic official did confirm to nbc news there was a, "frequency found during a sweep of the building at two different occasions." two fbi officials told nbc news neither the dnc nor its contractors ever reported the incident to the agency. joining me washington bureau chief of mother jones who
12:30 pm
reported this story, david corn. great to see you. great reporting. >> thank you. good to be with you. >> i just want to start right there. the fact that two fbi officials told nbc neither the dnc nor its contractors reported the incident to the agency. what are you hearing? what is the fbi telling you? >> i went to the fbi originally. they wouldn't say anything. i spoke to the fbi today and they said they can't account for the fact the dnc officials say the information was given to the fbi and fbi says they didn't get it. i'm still digging into that. i'm glad nbc news did confirm that the sweeps did occur and they did pick up these radio signals that indicated to the contractors doing the work that there was the strong indication, they said, this was connected to a listening device that was planted outside the
12:31 pm
headquarters. i'm told by other experts that indicates a pretty sophisticated and expensive operation. >> based on your reporting, who is the number one culprit at this point in time? have you narrowed down a list of suspects? >> i don't think anyone knows. this election has been so crazy. when you have vladimir putin working on the same side as the "national inquirer" and rogue fbi agents, including white nationalists and the rnc, the list of people who have gone after the dnc is long, but certainly, we have seen our government say that it's in the target of russian hackers. you would have to think about that at least theoretically. >> i know you're going to continue to keep us up-to-date on this story. thanks for your great reporting and joining us. >> thanks. good luck in these final days on the trail there. i was to delve deeply into
12:32 pm
this story and bring in communications director for the democratic national committee adam hodge. thank you for being here. >> always a pleasure to be with you. >> let's pick up right there. what can you tell bus this? do you have reason to believe someone bugged the dnc? >> we've been under attack from the very beginning of this campaign. there's no question and intelligence agencies have confirmed we know russia was behind the initial hack of our party, and we know that they've been doing it for one reason. that's to influence the election. only one candidate stands to benefit from that and that's donald trump. this story should concern all americans. it's something we're not going to let it distract us from our effort to get out the vote in these last few days. >> can you tell me if you have been in contact with the about the concerns your offices were bugged? >> i'm not going to get into the
12:33 pm
specifics of the actual investigation or our efforts to protect our committee. what i can say is we have definitely referred this to the relevant agencies. again, this is just part of a pattern we've been under for the entirety of this campaign. we are not going to let it distract us. we are talking about issues and solutions secretary clinton has run her entire race on, and we're talking about how we are going to build on the success and legacy of president obama. >> i want to give you a chance to talk about that in a moment. of course the hacks have been a big part of this campaign, as well. the daily leaks by wikileaks, including some that indicated that donna brazile gave questions to the clinton campaign while she was working for cnn. is that true? how much concern is there within the dnc about this?
12:34 pm
>> the statement from chair brazile was clear she said she didn't get any questions from cnn. there is no question she has impeccable integrity and stands behind the words she said. this speaks to the larger point. we don't know what documents are real, what documents are fake. throughout this campaign, we've seen a fake op-ed submitted to "the new york times" from us at the dnc from tim kaine. it turns out the e-mail was fake and the op-ed was fake. i'm not going to get into doing mr. putin's bidding. frankly, the e-mails that are e-mailed back and forth, we don't know the authenticity. >> to be clear, she never denied those specific e-mails were doctored. >> we are not speaking to the
12:35 pm
authenticity of any e-mails. we are not going to let this whole episode around any of the e-mails that had been released distract us from our mission in the last three days of this campaign. >> i want to show and talk strategy with you before i let you go. i want to show the new ad you guys are releasing and talk about it on the other side. >> i will consider it a personal insult if this community fails to activate itself in this election. you want to give me a good send-off? go vote! >> that is the president getting very personal with the african-american community. is there a concern particularly when you look at the early voting in north carolina where african-american early voting, not at the same level where it was this time 2012. are you concerned african-american turnout isn't going to be this strong or where it needs to be for clinton to win? >> we've seen strong early
12:36 pm
voting numbers, especially the last few days where african-americans are coming out to vote in north carolina and in florida. we feel good about where we are right now. we know we can't leave any stone unturned. that's why we are going to really, over the last three days of this campaign, make sure we get every voter we need out there to vote. >> i'm getting a hard wrap. secretary clinton raising eyebrows campaigning in michigan and pennsylvania. if she is confident about winning. >> is she campaigning in these traditionally blue states? >> we are 100% confident we are going to win michigan and pennsylvania. we make sure we talk to voters exactly where they are. you're seeing that enthusiasm on the ground in both north carolina, florida, pennsylvania, michigan. we've got to talk to voters where they are. we would rather be campaigning. we were in arizona this week and north carolina which is not typically been a state on our side.
12:37 pm
we are happy with the map we're on. we are on offense and will carry that through election day. >> thank you so much. >> always a pleasure. next we go live to north carolina where early voting ended a few hours ago. we'll get the latest from the battleground state one day after a judge order three counties to restore names of voters purged from the rolls. nd bloating. wherever i get stuck today, my "future self" will thank me. thank you. thank you! how do i get stuck in an air duct? nearly 50 years of experience has taught us: no matter what the future holds, you're always better off healthy. nature's bounty for medicare. the annual enrollment period is now open. now is the time to find the coverage that's right for you ... at the right price. the way to do that is to explore your options. you can spend hours doing that yourself ... or you can call healthmarkets ... and let us do the legwork for you - with no cost or obligation. we'll search a variety of plans from nationally
