good morning, everyone, it is friday, november 11th, i'm alex witt alongside ali velshi and louis burgdorf. well, americans across this country have taken to the streets for a second night in a row. the president-elect was greeted by angry crowds gathered outside trump tower right here in new york city as he and his wife melania returned from their trip to washington, d.c. demonstrators continued their message of "not our president," as they were forced behind security barricades across the street from the tower. trump tweeted last night, just had a very open and successful presidential election. now professional protesters, incited by the media, are protesting. very unfair. across the country in portland, oregon, demonstrations turned dangerous with outbreaks of violence and vandalism. one of 19 cars which had their windows smashed as police in riot gear nearby tried to keep order. in minneapolis, several thousand

protesters blocked the interstate for about an hour last night, causing a major traffic jam in both directions. it was a much more peaceful scene in denver, though. >> president obama and president-elect donald trump met face to face for the first time yesterday. the 44th president and soon to be 45th president discussed the transition inside the oval office for 90 minutes, much longer than planned. speaking before the cameras, both were positive about the meeting. president obama coached his successor and long time adversary about the job. >> we talked about some of the organizational issues in setting up a white house. we talked about foreign policy. we talked about domestic policy. i have been very encouraged by the, i think, interest in president-elect trump's wanting to work with my team around many

of the issues that this great country faces. most of all, i want to emphasize to you, mr. president-elect, that we now are going to want to do everything we can to help you succeed, because if you succeed, then the country succeeds. >> this was a meeting that was going to last for maybe ten or 15 minutes. we were just going to get to know each other. we had never met each other. i have great respect. the meeting lasted for almost an hour and a half, and as far as i'm concerned, could have gone for a lot longer. we really -- we discussed a lot of different situations. some wonderful, and some difficulties. i very much look forward to dealing with the president in the future, including counsel.

for the first time. really good meeting, great chemistry. melania liked mrs. o. a lot. the two men did not discuss personal issues, and that the president has not taken back calling trump, quote, temperament tally unfit and uniquely unqualified, end quote, as recently as monday. >> the president's views hasn't changed. he stands by what he said on the campaign trail. he had an opportunity to make his argument, he made that argument vigorously in states all across the country, but the american people decided. the election is over. the president didn't get to choose his successor, the american people did. >> did the birther issue come up at all during the -- >> i'm not aware that it did. i'm not aware that it did. >> donald and melania trump were accompanied to the white house by their son-in-law, a key adviser to the president-elect, who walked along the south lawn and the grounds with president obama's chief of staff while the other meetings were under way. while the appearance stoked

mike pence now to sit down and figure out people who not only can help on the campaign, but can help change america. >> reporter: while there's no word exactly who is on the shirt list, there's not so quiet whisperers. most washington insiders, retired general mike flynn for national security adviser, michael mccaul for homeland security. reince priebus, chief of staff, or potentially chris matthews k -- chris christie. >> would you want to be chief of staff? >> that's what's called a pregnant pause. >> rudy giuliani not as coy about his interest in attorney general. >> i certainly have the energy and nobody that knows the justice department better than me. >> reporter: mike rogers, former chair of the house intelligence committee, is being considered for cia director. roger's office issuing a no comment. there is a lot of work to do. team trump needs to fill 4,000 positions.

1,000 of which need senate confirmation. >> donald trump will make a mistake if he appoints too many insiders to positions. he won as an outsider, and he needs to re-enforce that which delivered victory for him. >> reporter: and those senior aides vp mike pence hope to keep the outsider campaign and outsider administration. as of now, many signs point to much of the same. >> that was katy tur reporting. ali? >> thanks, louis. mike pence is back home in indiana for the first time as vice president-elect following a sit down in washington, d.c., with the man he will succeed in a couple of months. pence met with joe biden in the west wing office for about 30 minutes yesterday. a statement from the vice president said the two talked about key duties of the position with biden offering his full support for a smooth transition. the vice president tweeted out this photo of the meeting with governor pence. the pence family is set to join the bidens for lunch next week. meanwhile, it was a warm welcome

for pence when he returned to his home state of indiana as a crowd gathered and greeted him at the airport. he choked up when speaking about how much his state means to him. >> i hope you will always know, will always know, that wherever my duties take me as vice president of the united states of america, every morning that i wake up, my heart will always be where the moonlight is fair along the wabash and from the fields there come the breath, where i know the candlelights will always be gleaming through the sycamores on the banks of the wabash far away. >> after his meeting with president obama yesterday, donald trump headed over to capitol hill, while there he met with house speaker paul ryan, who gave him a tour of the speaker's balcony, which overlooks the national mall where trump's inauguration will

take place. he also met with mitch mccom for about an hour yesterday afternoon, after months of tension between the president-elect and several top republicans, but yesterday trump and ryan expressed confidence about working together. >> i think we're going to be doing some absolutely great, spectacular things, for the american people. we look forward to starting. in fact, frankly, we can't get started fast enough, and whether it's health care or immigration, so many different things. we'll be working on them very rapidly. i think we'll be putting things up pretty quickly. >> look, i can tell you what i got out of donald trump today, this is a man of action. he's ready to get working. he wants to get it done for the country. it's really, really exciting. the past is the past, and more importantly, look at how we closed the campaign. you saw the guy sitting next to him, mike pence. mike pence and i did a big rally in wisconsin before the election, saying everybody come

out and vote for donald trump. we closed the campaign by calling for republican unity, and that is what we now have going forward. >> well, trump has had plenty of signature proposals while on the campaign trail, many of them pretty light on specifics. on capitol hill, trump was asked to translate them from poetry to prose, and he quickly laid out the top three items on his agenda. >> lot of priorities. >> what's the top three? >> we have a lot. very strongly with immigration, the border. health care. and looking at jobs. big league jobs. >> are you going to ask congress to ban muslims? >> thank you, everybody. >> there's been plenty of soul searching by democrats about how a democrat as well funded as hillary clinton could come up short, and some are wondering

whether bernie sanders might have proven to be a more formidable opponent for trump. the senator pushed aside such speculation yesterday, looking ahead to working with the president. >> i don't think it makes a whole lot of sense to do monday morning quarterbacking right now. the election is over. donald trump won. between you and me, wolf, i would have loved to have the opportunity to run against him, but that did not end up being the case. >> but it never crossed your mind you might have done better against him, you might have actually won if you had been the democratic nominee? >> what good does it do now? you know, the election is over. we got to look to the future. our job is two-fold. our job is to make sure the anger that so many people in this country feel, because they are, in fact, working longer hours for low wages, they are worried about their kids. if they are in rural america, they are seeing their downtown

stores boarded up, kids are leaving town because there's no jobs in the community. inner cities, youth unemployment astronomically high. people are angry. they have a right to be angry, but we are going to channel that anger against the people who caused the decline of the middle class and so many people living in poverty, not take it out on our neighbors who may happen to be muslim or latino or women. that is demagoguery and i will do anything i can to oppose that. a new york woman who says she was heart broken by hillary clinton's election loss got a surprise yesterday. she decided to relax byoing hiking in chappaqua with her daughters. while out on the trail she ran into bill and hillary clinton walking with their dogs. she wrote on facebook, i got to hug her, talk to her, and tell her one of my most proud moments as a mother was taking phoebe to go vote with me. >> that's awesome. a former congressman

welcome back, everyone. former illinois congressman aaron schock has been indicted on 24 counts, including wire fraud and theft of government funds. 35-year-old schock, once considered a rising star in the republican party, resigned his house seat in march of 2015 amid a government inquiry. he came under scrutiny after reports alleged he spent tens of thousands of dollars to decorate his office in a style inspired by downton abbey. he said no one intend to break the law. ali? >> come on, he wanted it to look like downton abbey, how bad can that be? don't comment on that, rafael.

follow his predecessor's advice. but trump couldn't resist talking to reporters at his second stop on capitol hill. trump walking the halls of congress with senate majority leader mitch mcconnell and getting a look at where he'll be sworn in from house speaker paul ryan. their relationship strained from the start, when ryan initially refused to endorse trump and later declined to defend him. the two now prioritizing tax reform and the fight against the health care law, popular proposals to unite the party as even former rivals get onboard. >> if they have an interest in sitting and talking to me, i'll be glad to do it. he's the president. if hillary had won, i'd be talking to hillary. >> president-elect trump heard from another former president with whom he's had a rocky relationship. bill clinton reached trump by phone yesterday afternoon for what an aide described as a brief call. according to the aide, the 42nd president congratulated trump and wished him well.

who will help president-elect donald trump as he tackles the job of governing? that is the question on the minds of many, as more intrigue is revealed about the potential cabinet schochoices. after new york magazine reported two sources saying that campaign manager kellyanne conway is reluctant to take an administration job because she wants to keep her business running, conway responded on twitter, "false. could it be those sources want the white house job i've been offered?" the white house reports steve bannon is a contender for white house chief of staff. this is the guy who runs breitbart news. he's had an icy relationship with house speaker paul ryan. while the wisconsin republican is close with rnc chairman reince priebus, another contender. "the times" also reports despite making lobbyists a target of his stump speeches constantly, donald trump has added high dollar washington lobbyists and corporate consultants to his

transition team overseeing the hiring. while trump campaign promising to drain the swamp, nbc news is learning he's looking to washington insiders to run the government. three sources say that newt gingrich is being considered for secretary of state. the former house speaker is among the four already approved for the highest security clearances in the country, along with rudy giuliani, chris christie, and former house intelligence committee chairman mike rogers. and "the wall street journal" reports jeb hensarling of texas, who just won his eighth term, is a candidate for treasury secretary. the congressman joins "morning joe" later this morning. that's why it's called "morning joe," louis. >> the clinton campaign is taking stock how they came up short in tuesday's elections, citing a clinton campaign a private conference call that took place yesterday. clinton top brass, including chairman john podesta, left the

impression james comey could have potentially cost them the election. the fbi director announced the discovery of more clinton e-mails about two weeks before the election itself. hillary clinton's running mate issued a statement on social media yesterday expressing his disappointment in the election results this week. he writes in part, "it pains me to say that hillary clinton is not going to be our next president, but this isn't a time to give up. i want to congratulate donald trump and mike pence on their victory. tuesday night was hard, but there is important work ahead. we are still stronger together. and together, we can help shape a better future." and for the democrats, there is an uncertain future. their nominee lost the electoral college and come january will control neither the white house, nor the senate, nor the house, nor most governor's mansions or state legislatures, so who will guide the party? howard dean tweeted, "the dems need organization and focus on the young, need a 50-state strategy and tech rehab."

but there are plenty names reported as being vied for power. javier becerra, steve israel, who is retiring from congress. former michigan governor jennifer granholm, ray buckley, and south carolina democratic party chairman jamie harrison. senator bernie sanders, who's once again an independent but caucusing with democrats backed keith ellison to head the party, reporting ellison could make an announcement monday, but said my shoe laces are tied up tight and i'm ready to get out on the court. senator sanders sent a series of tweets trying to rally the party. the democratic party has to be focused on grassroots america and not wealthy people attending cocktail parties. we can't be a party which cozies up to wall street, raises money from billionaires, and stands with working families. we have to take a side. if donald trump takes people's anger and turns it against muslims, hispanics,

african-americans, and women, we'll with his worst nightmare. at last check, that tweet had more than 100,000 retweets. last night the senator said this about the once and future trump administration. >> i intend to work with president trump on those issues where he will, in fact, work for the middle class and working families in this country. if he is serious about reforming our trade policies and creating jobs in america and not in china, let us work with him. trump talked about a corrupt campaign finance system. he's a billionaire, he was able to fund a large part of his campaign. well, you know what, not every candidate is a billionaire. if trump is serious about understanding that we have a corrupt campaign finance system, where special interests are able to buy politicians, i would hope that trump will work with us to overturn this disastrous citizens united supreme court

decision. let's rebuild the infrastructure. he's talked about that, i've talked about it. we can create millions of jobs rebuilding our roads and bridges and water systems, airports, our rail system. if he was not just into campaign rhetoric and if he was sincere about it, let's work together. so there are a lot of areas i think we can work together, if he was sincere in what he said during the campaign, but if he is going to resort to bigotry, trying to divide us up, we will oppose him tooth and nail. senator elizabeth warren also said she'd try to find a way to work with the president-elect, but like senator sanders, it comes with a big caveat. >> we will stand up to bigotry. no compromises ever on this one. bigotry and all its forms, we will fight back against attacks on latinos, on african-americans, on women, on muslims, on immigrants, on disabled americans, on everyone.

whether donald trump sits in a glass tower or sits in the white house, we will not give an inch on this. not now, not ever. >> okay, let's turn to business, where wall street continues to rearrange its bets in order to benefit from a trump presidency. the dow jones hit an all-time high yesterday, but asian markets are less certain. joining us live from london, carolyn, asian economies stand to lose under one of donald trump's key promises to rip up trade deals, to not go forward with the transpacific partnership. why is there enthusiasm that we've seen in some asian markets? >> well, initially there was a lot of bullishness around the world, global stock markets, europe and asia, but you're absolutely right, asian stocks and economies are set to lose if the tpp in asia are going to be ripped up by the trump

presidency. i also want to point out that under a trump presidency, interest rates are likely going to rise a lot faster than initially expected. why? that's because his policies are seen pro growth and seen boasting inflation and that in turn would spur capital outflows out of asia, so asia by and large, especially the emerging markets within asia, are set to lose. the reason why we're seeing the likes of the nikkei, the japanese market, outperforming this week is in part because of the weaker currency. now, i want to stay in asia and talk about china, what's happening in china today is singles day. for those of you who don't know what it is, it is an event that was initially seen as an anti-valentine's day holiday, but now is really morphed into a multibillion dollar shopping p bonanza. alibaba is breaking records, at half day today they've seen some $12 billion in sales, and

unsurprisingly, a large portion of that is happening on mobile devices. and in the first two hours we saw 84% of that being done on mobile devices. let's get back to the trump presidency. we all know jamie dimon, the ceo of jpmorgan, he may also be the next treasury secretary in a trump cabinet. is that likely? people don't think so, because he didn't support donald trump in the campaign and he's previously said on record i'm not interested in the job. >> but the conversation got people talking about it, so that's why we're talking about. good to see you, thank you so much. carolyn roth in london for cnbc, louis? we're going to turn to sad news out of the music industry. leonard cohen has died. the news confirmed by his record label. cohen released his final album just weeks ago to stellar reviews. some considering it some of his greatest works to date. in a recent interview with "the

the afghan taliban has claimed responsibility for an attack on the german consulate in afghanistan late last night. the local police chief tells nbc news that at least five people are dead and 32 injured, although these titles are -- these totals are likely to change. officials say a large truck packed with explosives rammed the main gate of the consulate in apparent retribution for a bombing. a 19-year-old was arrested trying to flee the scene after he took off and threw his suicide vest, which then exploded. speculation about president-elect trump links to russia have swirled for months. russian government officials were in contact with trump's campaign team during the campaign. it was said in an interview that, quote, there were contacts with trump's team and vladimir
