thanksgiving day parade which is under way right now. we're down on the streets of new york city for the parade's 90th year. also ahead, a recipe for trouble after a divisive election season. should you pass along politics at the thanksgiving table? how to talk about, not brawl over, politics with your loved ones. but first, donald trump is spending his thanksgiving with his family at his florida residence, mar-a-lago. the president-elect is calling for unity and cooperation this holiday weekend in an online address to the nation. >> this historic political campaign is now over. but now begins a great national campaign to rebuild our country and to restore the full promise of america for all of our people. i appear asking ym asking to jo effort. it's time to restore bonds of trust because when america is unified, there is nothing beyond our reach and i mean absolutely
8:01 am
nothing. >> trump advisors say thanksgiving weekend will be a working weekend as the president-elect continues to shape up his staff and cabinet. two new names announced yesterday. south carolina governor nikki haley as ambassador to the united nations and former michigan gop chair betsy devos, the first women nominated to trump's administration in the 16 day since his transition kicked off and could be more announcements as we head into the weekend, plus, new details today on how many intelligence briefings the president-elect has received. i want to turn to kristen welker in palm beach, florida. let's start with these cabinet appointments. can you give me the very latest on who's taking what and who is still in consideration? >> reporter: hey there, katy. happy thanksgiving. great to talk to you on this holiday. in terms of those announcements from yesterday, let's take you through those first. south carolina governor nikki haley is a really interesting
8:02 am
choice. she brings diversity. she's his first female pick. she's 44 years old. she's the youngest serving governor in the united states. her parents hail from india. she's a former critic of donald trump though. you know this, katy, she was a sharp critic during the primary process and supported marco rubio and then ted cruz. so the pick of governor haley for u.n. ambassador is bringing in one of his rivals into the fold. really the first time he has done that. she got bipartisan praise yesterday but her one challenge, katy, the fact she doesn't have foreign policy experience. having said that, it is assumed she will likely get confirmed because, of course, republican haves the majority in the senate and also, you did see some supportive comments from democrats like tim kaine who said, look, her executive experience is going to serve her very well. and then you have the other pick, betsy devos, she's more of a lightning rod. this is a billionaire donor to the gop. she is someone who supports school choice which is controversial.
8:03 am
supports voucher programs, also controversial and she's opposed to common core. jeb bush came out yesterday and praised this pick but you had teachers unions saying this could hurt students, it could hurt public education. so you might see a fight around that and in terms of what we're watching and i'd be surprised with major announcements today during the holiday, katy, but this is donald trump. i think the earliest with the new announcement, what is outstanding, what are the big posts we're watching? secretary of state, what you and i are talking about and considering two top people, rudy giuliani, a loyalist, and mitt romney, anything but a loyalist. we have seen some trump criticized so sharply and let me read you eyebrow raising tweets from kellyanne conway, one saying, receiving deluge of
8:04 am
social media and private comments with romney and some trump loyalists warn against romney as secretary of state and echoing what we've heard from trump's top loyalists. will he go the romney route? we'll have to see. a lot of question marks about that. i think giuliani is still the front-runner and then dr. ben carson very closely. he's been offered the position of hud secretary and understand he's mulling that position this holiday weekend. >> we're going to talk more about mitt romney in just a second but first, i want to ask you about new reporting we've confirmed from the "washington post" that said that donald trump so far has only received two intelligence briefings since elected. he's entitled to get them every single day. what are we hearing from the transition team on why that is? >> reporter: they're not responding to this report, katy. what i can tell you it is, it is a striking break from protocol. typically, president-elects receive briefings on a daily or a near daily basis. we know that vice
8:05 am
president-elect mike pence is getting briefed on an almost daily basis and president obama was briefed daily. he requested extra briefings on topics like iran. so this is a striking departure from what is tradition. some intelligence officials say because he's a novice and never served, he's missing a chance to get up to speed but one senior intelligence official cautions, he is going through a transition, he's focused on building a cabinet. give him a little bit more time, withhold judgment until he gets into office. >> kristen welker in palm beach, happy thanksgiving and happy to be here. >> happy thanksgiving. >> i want to turn to josh barrow, political commentator. we've got a lot to break down. i want to talk about these kellyanne conway and i hate we have to talk about tweets with the transition team and the campaign because just tell us what you're thinking or where you're going or don't say anything at all.
8:06 am
instead they send out tweets that maybe allude to mitt romney not being the choice and then maybe do allude. what's going on? >> i don't know. i'm done being surprised by things donald trump does. one thing is it goes back to trump's career in reality television and even when he was in real estate building up mystique around his project. you put out all sorts of ideas and rumors and some are true and some are false. when he was having a surprising flirtation with mitt romney, it could be a gambit to knock him down or placate people who like the idea that mitt romney might be secretary of state. on the other hand, you also have infighting within trump world and one way people in trump circle do is through public channels. that's one of the ways to reach him. so it's possible there's a disagreement about whether this is a good idea or not. >> and kellyanne trying to put her in recommendation in a public center.
8:07 am
>> exactly. who knows, i'm trying not to put too much emotional energy into any cabinet picks until they're actually announced. >> that's a smart move. >> and then i worry about whether i like the pick or not. these have to be confirmed by the senate. rudy giuliani may be the front-runner to be nominated but rand paul already said he won't vote to make rudy giuliani secretary of state because republicans only have 52 seats in the senate, they need to hold every republican but three for every one of these picks. if it's a pick that democrats will oppose so i don't know that trump can have rudy giuliani even if he wants him. i suspect a lot of republicans would like bob corker who chairs the foreign senate relations committee. >> a little bit more experience and doesn't have business ties overseas. >> yes and a mild temperament who might be able to counteract the hot headedness of donald trump. >> lock her up political rallies. >> exactly. so it's interesting to watch the
8:08 am
first one of these nominations to come down a lot of republicans and ben carson, no relevant experience. >> which he's admitted. >> he said he didn't want to put himself in a position to damage the administration by doing something he wasn't qualified to do or that's how armstrong williams described his mental state about this and then the other thing is i don't think establishment republicans like ben carson very much or the scam candidates who run these nonsense presidential campaigns to raise money and not really try to be president. so that's another notary public nati option. >> talk about donald trump not getting intelligence briefings every single day. this is a man who's not up to speed on foreign policy because he was not working in foreign policy at all before elected. would it not be the case that he would think he needs to get into it as much as he possibly can before he takes office or is it fair to say he's been working really hard on the transition
8:09 am
and try to find roles for cabinet positions? >> i mean, the transition is always a lot of work for every mr. speaker a president-elect. this reminds me of it being pulling teeth to get him to do debate prep and couldn't get him to focus like debate prep. didn't want to do mock debates. this is a similar thing that's worked maybe not that much fun would be his instinct not to do but worries me if he's not getting the briefings and continues as president, he'll lean a lot on people like mike flynn who is his national security advisor, people who will get the briefings. >> also has ties overseas to the foreign government. >> and also kind of a hot head. and so that doesn't make me comfortable given who we might be leaning on but if james mattis gets the job, department of defense, the retired general that's rumored, i've been hoping there will be some adults in the room around him like mattis, like maybe romney, although i have no idea whether the romney thing is real. the mattis thing looks more
8:10 am
real. >> i'm told we have to leave it here. happy thanksgiving. >> happy thanksgiving. turning now to macy's thanksgiving day parade. unprecedented show of force as millions line the streets of new york city. mid-town manhattan all along the parade route is on high alert as the city ramps up security measures to shield parade watchers from a potential terrorist attack. nbc's tammy leitner is along the parade route and has more. what can you tell us? are the people having fun despite the extra show of force? >> reporter: absolutely, of course, katy. this is unprecedented. 3,000 nypd officers, 500 of them specially trained to deal with any type of incident that could be terrorist related and everybody out here are just having a great time. they're cheering for the cops that are walking along the parade route which is something you don't always see. sop of these people i've been talking to got out here at 4:00 a.m. a lot of them are parents. their kids are in the parade
8:11 am
today. they traveled from all over the country. so just an amazing experience for a lot of people. >> tammy, thank you so much. if you were at 30 rock working at nbc, one of the perks is we get to be on the fourth floor and see the parades, the floats go by and it's amazing and awesome and makes you not mind working on a holiday. coming up, our terrorism expert joins us about the efforts to secure the parade route and will get his insight on the recent terrorism attacks but coming up, a tragic development with the deadly school bus accident in tennessee and a sixth child passed away and up next, live in chattanooga with new questions about the driver's actions on the day of the crash. and we're tracking the holiday weather. rain expected in parts of the east coast and some places might even see snow. we'll have the latest weekend forecast. stay with us. 6- world ugly and messy.

8:15 am
. in chattanooga, tennessee, a sixth child has died after that horrific bus crash there this week. police say the bus was speeding when it veered off the road and hit a tree. and now there are questions about whether the driver charged in the crash may have strayed from his usual route. nbc's mariana atencio is in chattanooga with us and has the latest details, mariana? >> reporter: katy, what you said is right. according to ntsb, the bus driver was not supposed to take the children home on this route behind me, towny road. chattanooga police also confirmed the driver's toxicology report came back clean but the company who hired the driver is being sued by the family of one of the children who was injured and i want to
8:16 am
read what was said about the company at ntsb's presser last evening. they said this bus company was operating on a conditional safety rating from 2007 to 2015. that means that the federal motor carrier administration, katy, found some problems with that company. however, the problems were resolved by 2015, by august of last year. and this company's rating was upgraded to satisfactory, however, the ntsb said they plan to look into those deficiencies and the history of that company. this company, to put things into perspective, it owns 13,000 buses in 32 states and here in chattanooga, katy, six families are grieving now that a sixth child has lost their life. many families praying for a miracle at the hospital and i want to bring in rosie russell, a teacher here and you taught two of the children who died, rosie. tell me.
8:17 am
i know you consoled them the day after this crash. what do you tell a child after an accident like this? >> you just don't know what to say. we were just talking about everything, when i went over to woodmor school and talked about everything they were doing. they were working on, you know, coloring turkeys and doing math, so it was so much going on over there that we failed, they fael brought the situation up at that particular time. >> reporter: we know this is the first time you even had the strength to walk over here to this makeshift memorial. why was it important for you to be here today on thanksgiving? >> today, because it was thanksgiving. to put things in perspective. knowing i had a sleepless night due to the fact we lost a sixth child, so i got up and did my morning run, said i'm going over there today and my mind is clear.
8:18 am
it's thanksgiving. their family got to miss their child today. i'm going to be with mine. so i felt like i need to come and make sure i support, i grieved, continue to grieve as i go and be with my family. >> reporter: those children will need your guidance and hugs in the coming months. >> yes. >> reporter: katy, back to you. >> nbc's mariana atencio reporting to us from chattanooga, tennessee. thank you. how to protect new york city's thanksgiving day parade. are the isis threats credible or just propaganda? i'll talk live with the terrorist and democrats demand a recount. third party green candidate jill stein is raising millions of dollars to fund the recount in swing states that pushed donald trump over the top. but is it realistic? we'll have more for you coming up. beyond is a natural pet food
8:19 am
that goes beyond assuming ingredients are safe... to knowing they are. going beyond expectations... because our pets deserve it. beyond. natural pet food. jack knocked over a candlestick, onto the shag carpeting... ...and his pants igned into flames, causing him to stop, drop and roll. luckily jack recently had geico help him with renters insurance. because all his belongings went up in flames. jack got full replacement and now has new pants he ordered from banana republic.
8:20 am
8:22 am
thanksgiving day parade rolls through new york city, a record 3,000 police officers are at the ready to protect the millions of people who are lining the streets. officials ramping up security measures in the wake of pointed threats against the parade. joining me now is msnbc terrorism expert malcolm nance. >> good morning. >> security is a concern with these big events. always with parades. this is a high profile one. what can you tell us about the specific threats surrounding this parade though? >> right now, all the threats that we've seen at other mass gatherings are extent from suicide bombings, drop bombings where you drop a package there as we saw in the boston massacre but now, law enforcement is on the ready for the use of vehicle as weapon system which is what we saw in nice, france, where someone takes a truck and drives through there and put up sand filled dump trucks to act as barriers in the wake of that but
8:23 am
again, you've got 3,000 policemen there right now in the public all on guard for anything that could occur. >> i want to ask you though, at what point are we sacrificing or freedoms and our enjoyment of ourraditions to keep us safe? is there a line that's being guarded by the officers to make sure that their presence doesn't disrupt the feeling, the sentiment of the parade? >> well, everything i'm seeing today, there's absolutely no disruption by the use of large quantities of law enforcement in this parade. i understand the public is very appreciative of them and you know how new york city police are, always cheered when they're at these mass events. that being said, if we start cancelling events or highly modifying these events on the basis of threats which are not extent, that's where the terrorists start to win.
8:24 am
so the goal is to run a nice traditional parade and make sure that if anything does happen, it's contained very quickly but certainly, not to change our traditions. >> moving on to donald trump, because i want to get your opinion on this and intelligence sources confirmed for us he's on gotten two intelligence briefings since he was elected. certainly a lot less than his past, the past presidents during the transition. what do you make of his use of intelligence in such a sparing way so far? >> well, i don't buy the excuse he's been leveeing that he's too busy to get intelligence briefings. this is the number one job of the president of the united states. and as president-elect, it is his responsibility to come forward, get the briefing, learn what he doesn't know, which is worlds, he doesn't seem to know anything about the global intelligence operations. even though he has advisors, the
8:25 am
responsibility is his. he has to get the briefings and then he needs to start studying the other briefing packages which he can take the bed at the end of the eveng. this is critical, as president-elect, he needs to be meeting the threats on the moment he raises his hand and becomes the president of the united states. >> we will see if he takes your advice. thank you so much for being here, malcolm nance, and happy thanksgiving. hope you're enjoying it. >> to you too. iraqi troops are advancing further into parts of mosul as they work to retake the city from isis. >> the front line of defense here on camp swift. >> definitely miss my family. sacrifice so others can be with their families. >> more than 100 americans celebrate the thanksgiving holiday. nearly 6,000 miles from home. we'll go live to camp swift near the front lines in iraq and plus, can democrats regain a
8:26 am
foothold in the battleground states of pennsylvania, michigan, and wisconsin? where many obama supporters voted for trump. i'll ask political experts coming up. what's the best way to get two servings of veggies? v8 or a fancy juice store? ready, go! hi, juice universe? one large rutabaga, with eggplant... done! that's not fair. glad i had a v8. the original way to fuel your day. come on, wake up!!! come on, why ya sleepin'? come on! what time is it? it's go time. come on. let's go, let's go, let's go. woooo hoooo!! yeah!! i feel like i went to bed an hour ago. i'll make the cocoa. get a great offer on the car of your grown-up dreams

8:28 am
8:29 am
over the river and through the woods, what will the weather look like for thanksgiving travelers and shoppers? bonnie schneider has the forecast for us. hi, bonnie. >> hi, katy. we've seen great weather with a coup le of exceptions. parts of new york and northeast pennsylvania but most of the country is really enjoying fair weather with minimal airport delays and potentially, we could see something develop for pittsburgh or seattle as we go through the afternoon due to rain and low visibility with cloud coverage and the driving situation looks really great. a lot better than it did yesterday. so if you're traveling today, your forecast looks nice and
8:30 am
bright. we have the exception as i mentioned of the northwest, seattle, to missoula with snow in the higher elevations and watch for the mix of rain changing to snow at times. temperatures though, super pleasant. cooler in denver. 51 in st. louis. 42 in chicago and new york and through washington, so much milder than earlier this week, so a lot better. florida also looks beautiful with high temperatures in the low 80s and if you're going to be heading out on black friday, really good weather for retailers as well. fine conditions. don't have any big storms to talk about but saturday and sunday a different story as we wrap up the end of the week, watch for the potential for more airport delays on one of the busiest travel days of the year, katy. that's something t watch for over the weekend. >> bonnie schneider, thank you so much. troops celebrated in the shadow of war in iraq. camp swift miles from the front lines in the fight against isis in mosul.
8:31 am
u.s. troops to eat a well earned thanksgiving dinner and correspondent lucy kafanov with the troops and joins us now. first off, how is morale there and secondly, give me the latest for the battle for mosul that's intensifying. what is the progress so far? >> reporter: hey, katy. happy thanksgiving to you and as you know from your time traveling on the road, it's always hard to be away from family, especially over the holidays. harder still when you're stuck in this tiny cold dusty base just a few miles from the fight and a few soldiers here, 150 of them, deployed here for about 8 months. they miss their families. it's hard for them to celebrate this holiday without being able to be with them but they find a community within one another. this was a special day for the troops deployed at camp swift. 120 pounds of turkey. 12 birds with all the special fixings that you can imagine. we had a chance to sit down with
8:32 am
them to talk about what they miss and most of the folks just wanted to see their families, wanted to spend time with loved ones but of course, two months left to go. and even for those who have been fighting for a long time who are no stranger to these frequent deployments, it doesn't get any easier. here's a look at what one of the soldiers told us. >> this actually is the third time to iraq and went to afghan b istan but still dealing with separation anxiety but it goes away faster than it did at the beginning. >> you miss for thanksgiving? >> i miss them every day. holiday, birthday, or anniversary, i miss it all every single day. nothing changes. >> reporter: so you heard them there. it doesn't get any easier for them but they know this fight is important. the officials here, the troops here are effectively supporting the efforts in that fight against mosul.
8:33 am
the brains of the operation, coordinating in the fractions that are partaking in the fight on the ground. they know their mission is important and that is what makes it easier to be here but it's difficult conditions. this is a tiny outpost, not much to do here and of course, with security threats always an issue and you asked about the fight for mosul, it is pressing with the help of air strikes right here in camp swift. katy? >> 13 years in iraq, 13 thanksgivings in iraq. lucy kafanov, happy thanksgiving to you. some people can't let the 2016 election go and one candidate is leading the charge. jill stein set a goal on wednesday to raise $2 million to fund reelection counts, recounts, i should say, in wisconsin, michigan, and pennsylvania. states where some raised concerns over vote manipulation and hacking. as of this hour, stein blew
8:34 am
through that goal. proof that there are plenty of progressives who aren't ready to concede to donald trump. let's bring in to noel and karine. let's start with you, noelle. do you think this is a good use of their time right now? >> well, you know, let's look at the situation going on. is it a good use of time? you know, we're up against a time clock. jill stein, in order to file this, you're up against a time restraint. and if you look at pennsylvania, you only have 20 days to file which makes it on monday and if you look at wisconsin, i think it was friday. >> wisconsin is tomorrow. got to do it by tomorrow. >> right. so you've got to look at the history of this. there are a lot of people that really, really thought, especially the state of pennsylvania that that was going to go towards hillary clinton. and she did win the popular vote. and a lot of people are very upset, a lot of your viewers, a
8:35 am
lot of people are very passionate about this and they don't like the results. so this is a way to exercise to see if there's validity in this. i don't think, i really do not think that this is going to go anywhere and a lot is because of the time. >> karine, kellyanne conway put salt in the wound. look who can't accept the election results? and then donald trump if he did lose are the liberals just in denial here? >> no, look. first, it's not apples and apples. it's jill stein raising the money, and raised 2 million in 24 hours. i think there's good reason, right, to be skeptical. political statisticians say the reason the discrepancy could be because of via dep graphmograph i think this is good for our
8:36 am
democracy just to give confidence to the american people that our voting system is working and i think that there's nothing wrong with doing the recount, but is it going to change anything? very very highly unl like lly u >> hillary clinton leading popular vote by 2 million votes. in california, a few million votes left to count so that could go even higher but let's talk about the democrats' future and i'll throw this one to you as well, karine. we have tim ryan fighting with nancy pelosi to lead the house caucus. do you think there needs to be a change in leadership given how many seats they've continued to lose since 2010? can nancy pelosi still be effective? >> i think nancy pelosi can still very well be effective. there's no better counter than she. i think she understands the body, the democrats and
8:37 am
understands how the system works and i think that's very important. should tim ryan have a seat at the table? absolutely. should they bring younger new leaders to the table? yes, they should give them a space and others as well. which is really important if we're trying to move forward with the party. and triying to figure out how t bring everybody in. i think that would be important to do. >> there are a lot of rust belt voters who voted for president obama and donald trump. does this mean we'll have a permanent set of people who are just politically up for grabs? >> yes. i do. i do think that we have this type of a voter that voted for hoping change with obama and then they turned around and in a sense, voted for more hope and change with president-elect trump. this is a very serious ordeal that happened and the fact that so many hard working men and women that were on the fence turned around and decided to give their vote to donald trump, this is something that both
8:38 am
establishment gop and the democrats need to look at and study exactly why this happened. so i think both parties have their work cut out for then because you have to remember, the gop did not go and recruit donald trump. in a sense, donald trump recruited the gop. >> i think that's a really good way of puftitting it, noelle. speaking of donald trump and kellyanne conway, she was tweeting a tea leaf reading talking about mitt romney and retweeting an article which showed that loyalists donald trump were not happy about mitt romney. should we take this as a sign that romney is not a serious contender any longer or perhaps was never really a serious contender? >> to me? >> noelle. >> yes, this is a very tricky situation. number one, i like the fact that donald trump reached an olive branch out to mitt romney. there's a lot of people on both
8:39 am
sides of the aisle that would be very comfortable. >> why retweet an article where other people have been critical? >> well, you know, i think that if he is lucky enough to have a position of importance in the administration, i think that mitt romney will probably have to address the long press conference that he held where he bashed unrelenting on donald trump. i think he's going to have to say some good things and maybe even make an apology for that because he's going to have to address it. we can't really overlook it because it was pretty scathing and i think that's why you hear a lot of loyalists, especially a newt gingrich or a governor mike huckabee look at this and go, this is not really making sense. this guy was not only not for you, he was adamantly against you. so i do agree with you. it is beyond extending the olive
8:40 am
branch, but i do think that mitt romney has value in the administration and a lot of people would agree. >> noelle nikpour, thank you. karine jean pierre. and a number of stores are open today starting black friday sales a day early. but should you start your shopping now and when are the best sales? a live report is next. beyond is a natural pet food that goes beyond assuming ingredients are safe... to knowing they are. going beyond expectations... because our pets deserve it. beyond. natural pet food. they are the natural borns enemy of the way things are.

dr. jeff gardare to keep us and everyone else calm this holiday season. you have an acronym, that's useful. >> it's called help. it's the strategy i've been giving to people all over the internet and of course here at msnbc, how to get through this thanksgiving dinner and of course, the "h" is host. and i really do believe, katy, that the host sets the tone for the thanksgiving dinner by setting out what the rules are for the table, especially rules around respect, about listening to one another and certainly not getting into personal attacks. >> does that mean i get to set the rules tonight to say we are not talking about politics period no matter what, i don't want to hear either the name he hillary clinton, donald trump, or anything surrounding those names. >> i don't think there's any way you avoid it but you'll try.
8:45 am
