welcome back, you are watching msnbc, we are covering a new report despite russia's claims, it had no role in the election. it carried out a propaganda campaign spreading fake news. the two groups of independent researche researchers found that moscow employed thousands of people to make provacative online postings. russia set up network websites and social media accounts to spread this false content. some of that content shared actually was originated from the state funded information

services, rt and sputnik. i want to bring in our executive director of the fbi, shawn henry. what do you make of this report of russia's possibly role in the election? >> this is something we see before with brexit and ukraine elections. you see the russians use social media and the electronic distribution of missed information to try to influence world events so they are more favorable for the russian government and policies and etc. in this particular case, what researchers are saying is that there are tens of thousands of robot counts on social media that are spreading miss information as well as specifically planned false information to discredit candidate hillary clinton to help promote policies of donald trump. again, all in a way to cause chaos or confusion of the electoral process within the

5:21 am
when i asked them where, they did not know what i meant. i just said twitter. lets get real. if we know this is happening, it is happening abroad from a legal perspective are the ramifications and going forward, what can really be done about it. from a consumer perspective, it is important to know the source. people just need to be aware that is occurring and make a determination of what type of news sources they are consuming. i think that the nation needs to define what those read lines are. we heard that president obama went and talked to folks in the kreml kremlin to dictate to them that this cannot happen going forward. >> that conversation did not work. if you are president-elect trump, you are sitting in that position, what do you do? you say thanks buddy? >> that's not going to happen.
5:22 am
i don't know how you put the genie back in the bottle. we all rely on social media and that's not going to go away. this type of influenced campaign, they're going to continue in the future. consumers have to be aware and i think that nations need to determine and dictate what is acceptable and what's not. i don't know how you actually go back and roll back the clock. that's not going to happen. it is really and begins with awareness and people derstanding these campaigns are active and they got to take action themselves to balance. you cannot assume everything you read in the internet is actual. this is all about the consumers. >> mike flynn appeared on russian television so far. what do you make of him as donald's pick? >> there is been a lot of discussions inside the belt way and washington, d.c. about
5:23 am
flynn's experiences and certainly as a general, there were times where he had a lot of respect and i don't know him personally but a lot of what i picked up from people where i spoken with. towards the end of his career there, there were some changes, clearly he made some pretty strong statements about isis and about islam and about how the u.s. should be negotiating and i think one of the things that is really important when you are dealing with isis and these groups is recognize and understand their monitoring social media and listening to what's happening in the press and that can be very valuable and helpful for us from a policy perspective but some of the inflammatory statement, oftentimes will work against us. some of the things that we heard about shutting down muslims access to the united states or some of the false stories i think or promoting story, we are going to kick people out across the board. those are the types of things
5:24 am
that maybe used to do recruiting. to justify some of the attacks and help in flame the the left isis of these types of groups causing potential damage for the united states. >> shawn, thank you very much for sharing your thoughts, i appreciate it. >> still ahead r, if your famil like mine decided not to discuss politics for thanksgiving. there were plenty of football to talk about. we'll go through the highlights including aretha franklin's epic performance. >> aretha, she deserves a lot of respect.
