reporting. markets in the u.s. are closed today in observance of the new year's holiy, but traders overseas are kicking 2017 off on a mixed note. bc's carolyn roth is joining us live from london. it looks like the 2016 rally is not carrying over to the new year in some parts of the world. >> reporter: hey, we'll have to wait and see. happy new year to everyone at the team. look, we have trap trepid trading. this is the first trading day of the year. and actually after a little bit of weakness right at the start of trade, we have now turned around and we are comfortably higher for the broader european index. we are at the highest level since december 2015. for germany, which returned 7% last year, we are now at the highest level since august of 2015. and that leads me to what the u.s. markets did last year for 20he dow was up 13%. the best year since 2013.
