to sheltering in place inside this airport hanger. a number of people are on the tarmac there. they are being told they have to stay in the terminals where they were. there were a number of people who were still stuck on their airplane. we do not control this helicopter camera, you could see a number of airplanes that were on the tarmac. throughout our we have been learning new information of the suspect. 26-year-old esteban santiago. we told he flew from angage alaska described in great detail
3:01 pm
what transpired after 1:00 this afternoon. they saw a man wearing a star wars t-shirt open fire, reload a several times. he stopped shooting because he ran out of bullet, at that point, he drops and spread eagle and wait for law enforcement to arrest him. >> 5 confirmed dead and a number of folks injured at least eight, they are in criminal conditions. that's going to do it for me. thank you, so much. we have been following the breaking news for five hours. this mass shooting at the fort lauderdale airport. five dead, a number injured after gunman opened fire just after 1:00 eastern time.
3:02 pm
term nam two baggage claim there. it's video moment after. it's tough to watch. >> this guy around us. >> the alleged shooter is esteban santiago she 26-year-old born in new jersey living in alaska law enforcement sources say he have been up in alaska and flew from anchorage alaska to change planes. >> we have the shooter in custody. he is unharmed, suspect is being
3:03 pm
interviewed by team of fbi agents and broward sheriff's office homicide detectives. there's been cohenive between all the local law enforcement. the alleged shooter laid down on the ground troped his weapon and waited for the police. moment ago rick scott had this to say. >> whoever is responsible will be held accountable to the fullest extend of the law. the state of florida law enforcement in this state will not tolerate evil acts. i have reached out to president-elect and spoken with him and vice president pence to keep them informed and they told me whatever resource we need from the federal government they would do everything within their power to make that happen.
3:04 pm
>> carry on the scene, what's the latest. >> the latest is that passengers who were scattered to the wind here, are still here at the airport in a lockdown. shelter in place. but the problem is sheltering out while the weather is fine they have no food, water, or bathroom. they cannot go into the terminals baa they need to go through and do security sweeps of the four terminals. you have fatigue setting in. some people are not sure what is going on alone gunman in the baggage claim in terminal two. where is my loved one, the cell
3:05 pm
one service aorng. the broward county authoriti have setup 800 number so people can get latest update. it is 866-435-9355. it's 866-435-9355. now some of the developments today following the shooting the horrific shooting was a report of gunfire in terminal one that turned out not to be true. so there was a little panic situation there. as well a report there was something inside of the parking gra garage there. authorities reported there.
3:06 pm
bomb sniffing dogs are going through the parking structures here. and most of them full because of the time of year they are. it's slow moving process there. the entire airport is shutdown. all of the entrance and exits are shutdown. and many of the passengers who had to exscape today and were fleeing had to cross the runway, i'm going to step out of the way to see if you can look at this. they had to go across the runway, and way over there to the other side of the airport by a terminal you. you can see some people are still gathered there, they are waiting for information only when to come back. the situation is over but clearly not over because of the lo gisic of trying to get everybody back into place. the airport is going to be shutdown today.
3:07 pm
they will try to ramp it back up tomorrow. but there's no raem timetable on even that. some passengers here when they get a chance to leave, may choose to go north to palm beach international to see if they can get out of there. and to the south of miami where they do have later flight but those would be full or gone by the time folks can get there. that 800 number is going to help people connect with places they can stay. i have not got a real count of how many passengers there are, but we're talking tens of thousands. on a regular day it's upwards of 80,000 passengers at this airport. there's a lot of people separated from luggage, loved
3:08 pm
ones and any expense of -- waiting for someone to tell them where to go. the fear of a gunman on the loose is now over. >> that is the silver lining. is everybody outside of the airport or are there some people indoors. are some people still on airplane that have been on planes for five hours now? >> there are those inseide and outside. when i arrived after the shooting, i'm on the departure side, passengers were told they could stay in the air-conditioning and seated there. many chose to do that. some of this came out. if you came out you were north allowed back in. when they started back with the second fear of another gunman
3:09 pm
when turned out to be not true. they begin emptying the terminal there. some people were hiding behind polls, uncertain what was going on. there maybe some people insited. by and large most of the people have been told to leave. and being on that side of the airport in the darkness they are not going to have them walk back across in the darkness it's not sa safe to do an airway. the other thing they have to do, opening the airport tomorrow, there's going to have to be teams to sweep for foreign objects. it seems incident enough that object can become a problem for a plane landsing. they have to go through that sweep out there.
3:10 pm
w ramping up this airport tomorrow are not going to be easy. >> carry sanders. thank you. what more are we learning from his family. >> born in new jersey he was born in puerto rico. he went into the national guard in puerto rico. he was there for six years. from 2009 and 2010, one one one days exactly. he moved to alaska two years ago where he was a security guard which is typical of veterans. in an interview with his aunt, conducted by investigative unit.
3:11 pm
we have starting to get a picture of somebody struggling with mental issues. when he came back from iraq. he wasn't feeling good. they put the kids in war when they come out they don't do anything for them. it's not just a veteran with post-traumatic stress disorder we are starting to get picture of somebody mentally trouble and it maybe related to his service. >> i want to go to tom. washington d.c. tom this has had an impact on many airports. >> yes. we heard that from new york have
3:12 pm
ramped up security today. they have tactical police unit and begun to another stage of footing security profile of miami. l.a. the same thing. you'll see this at major airport in the country they are going to take it upon themselves to ramp it up a little bit. here is why, when this originally broke, we didn't know whether this was single islated event or diversion for another event. it's protocol to ramp it up nationwide. you don't need a call from washington from that. every restaurant bar in the airport you see what happens happening in fort lauderdale you can imagine what, guys, we're going to ramp it up.
3:13 pm
as you know this issue about checking a weapon. it is legal to check a weapon but it must be in a hard shell case, secure lock on it and declare that to the airline. in the individual did check the gun, in indianapolis and retrieved it once arrived in fort lauderdale. that opens up questions about securities in public area after the flight is over when people are collecting weapon they check. this is common, legally but at check points tsa check points they confi kat more than 2,600 guns alone and vast majority of them a lot were incident, many forget they had a gun in their bag. there's a new dimension to that
3:14 pm
where a gunman grabbed a dwun that he had checked opened it up, once arrived at the airport, put bullet in it and opened fire. >> let me bring in former police commissioner, national security analyst, bill bratton is with us. we have a suspect in custody, it appears from reporting he may have been operating alone. what would they be doing right now. >> there's multiple things right now, trying to determine as much information as possible about him. they seem to have solidfide how he came to the airport not knowing that they would have been checking. >> we know airplane from ang
3:15 pm
rage from indianapolis on to fort lauderdale. >> they are going to be doing this inat the mate checking of the airport. it's complicated. this is not something you walk down, there are officer safety, it has to be done in a coordinated fashion. you can find people hiding until they are sure it's police coming through. they have to literally sweep the runway to make sure somebody didn't drop anything on the runway. you are going to also have the involvement of the various agencies, fbi, tsa. >> lead agency is broward county
3:16 pm
sheriff. >> that's right. the last report i heard throughout day he said nothing. he started shooting. >> that's what eyewitnesss told us. >> i'm not hearing anything that he has given any statement as of this time. >> do we know if he is cooperative. >> at this stage i don't have that. they are doing a job keeping a lid of what's going on as it relates to his integration. is there day and age computers. the reference to the room made or the significant other we have to talk with that person. around the country as related earlier there's a lot going on around the country will have ramped up security out of heighten sense of caution.
3:17 pm
>> just standard operating proceed procedures. >> nothing new. this new element of guns checked in baggage, the reality is he could not have gotten on the plane, walked into that area and started shooting people there. this idea of this new element of concern for checked baggage and the idea of -- retrieve a gun it's so easy to walk in baggage area. >> soft targets within our airport i. we have soft target on every street corner in america. there's concern about checked baggage he could have just as easy never got on plane and just
3:18 pm
started shooting. the world we are living inis limits to what you can do, limits to where you put your resource and assets, we are going to study this. i don't see major changes as it relates to this idea of being on ship weapons with planes. >> in fort lauderdale, bill brat ton, thank you. we'll try to work in a quick commercial break. we're back with the police, the investigation and more on how safe are our airports. commissioner bill britain has been with us. thank you. i decided to go on ancestry to get my dna tested so i could find out more about my heritage. and i also found that i had a sister that i didn't know about because i'm adopted. that was me.

. some new breaking news coming into us at msnbc this is from pete williams our reporter who covers all things justice in washington. he reports that federal source
3:22 pm
say the man you are seeing on the screen here esteban santiago accused in shooting. complained of hearing voices. he was undergoing treatment for mental health problems. complaining he was hearing voices. a few months ago he walked into anchorage claiming that the cia was forcing him to join isis. local police were called at the time he went voluntarily to a mental facility for treatment. this coming in from federal law enforcement officials. i want to bring back in bill bratton here in new york. also with us jim cavanagh. bill rk bill, i want to start with you,
3:23 pm
it sound like potentially this was all about a mental health issues. >> that's the first story that we know it's not the last. the isis comment was interesting. my ears pushinged up for that one. as they go forward with their medical evaluation. what was his state of mind in term of that precipitated the events of today it's going to be interesting as we go forward. >> we have reports from eyewitnesss it was 9 millimeter handgun is what we heard. >> tracing the gun for sure to
3:24 pm
make sure if this person bout that gun himself, how did he acquire it. his fingerprints on the gun, an yip dna on the gun, all the close kir cut shooting on the te television in the airport. everybody in the baggage area need to be briefed. the significant other. federal and state police, local police up there will be talking his spouse, significant others, family members, what's is he about. this does sound like, if this hold true from pete, a guy suffering from mental illness, we have dealt with this guy,
3:25 pm
every cop have dealt with people hearing voices and talking about fbi, cia and i have had them come into my office and talk about the kennedy assassination, communist and rage, most of the people are not violent, they are having disturbance, mental health issue and need a doctor. they will come to official government offices and tell them people are -- most of them are not violent. now we have the intersection of the mental health, firearm and some issue in his live and all of a sudden they take hold and he can't deal with the reality he is in, if this hold true and
3:26 pm
he goes frr the gun when he lands. i'm interesting to see if there's interaction or no interaction and he was completely silent on the plane. he took to target the people at the baggage claim which were the people on his plane. why is he targeting them. he could have shot people in the alaska. why then at that moment it would be something for us to know. something moving forward, the police would like to know, can you stop the next guy. have you to stop him earlier than when he gets his finger on the trigger. >> it's striking that he said not a word, according to eyewitnesss. many were shot in the head. >> we have an eyewitness who was
3:27 pm
extraordinary in his about what he had witnessed. most people would be traumatized. >> i wonder if he was in shock. >> which creates -- from listening to this conversation earlier today what he described it was not any sound from this individual and there's number of statements praise god, praise al la, in this instance nothing. as it goes forward, the motivation is going to be interesting. >> as we await more details, i want to thank you both for being here with us. normer new york city bill bratton, thank you, so much. we'll take another commercial

3:31 pm
moments after the shooter opened fire today at airport in fort lauderdale. here account of that firsthand account. >> he didn't say anything. he was quiet the whole time. he didn't nothing. he started shooting. about 1:55 so, he started randomly shooting people. going up and down in the baggage claim. he had 9 millimeter. once he finished shooting, he walked down by door two, threw his gun on the ground and spread eagle. >> he fully expected to get caught? >> he laid on the ground and
3:32 pm
spread eagle until the officers came up to him. >> one gun. >> one gun, one shooter. >> folks with you are they okay? >> the people relanded on that delta flight that came from indianapolis. she ran out of the building. i started helping people get out. people tripping over each other as they were trying to get out. i ran back into the building trying to get more people out, stay from cover, from that perspective like i said, he run out of the ammunition by that time, i was within 50 feet of him i. he had blue polo shirt on, laid on the ground and spread eagle and broward sheriff officer came up and secured the scene and
3:33 pm
everything else. >> that was an eyewitness speaking with craig melvin. joining me is the mayor. thank you for joining us. >> how are you. >> i'm well. >> thank you. >> it is a difficult day for south florida, we have resident and visitors, our family and friend and when you hear of occurrence like this is worrisome to know that mass shooting like this happened so close to all of us. >> what are authorities telling you about the state of things at the airport. i want to start there and we can talk about what happened earlier. but the airport it still under look down. we have had some live pictures we have been looking at. our reporter carry sanders say
3:34 pm
there are people outside. what's going to lap happen to all of those folks. >> there's a large of parameter for law enforcement to control. i'm sure there's controlled exit from the airport. it's a massive facility. i believe tactical teams are clearing the enormous parking garages in and around the airport. in an abundance of caution they are making sure everything is save. as we speak we have here which my assistant police chief. we have clearing of the garages it is my opinion that you'll start see civilian being allowed to exit. a controlled fall silt.
3:35 pm
>> they will bring buses and put them out and on to their next place? >> sure, once the airport opens too traffic, then you'll have cars, individuals with cars looking to exit. you have people looking coued on what's called parameter road looking to exit. people sitting on grass, hoods of cars, the cars will clear and i know there's a queue of people looking to exit the airport. as far as incoming traffic or mass transit, ill defefr to broward to discuss when it can take place. there's a lot of law enforcement there and the roadways are currently still closed. >> as far as the incident itself and the shooter, have you been able to learn what we have been reporting about this young man
3:36 pm

imy moderate to severeng crohn's disease. i didn't think there was anything else to talk about. but then i realized there was. so, i finally broke the silence with my doctor about what i was experiencing. he said humira is for people like me who have tried other medications but still experience the symptoms of moderate to severe crohn's disease. in clinical studies, the majority of patients on humira saw significant symptom relief. and many achieved remission. humira can lower your ability to fight infections, including tuberculosis. serious, sometimes fatal infections and cancers, including lymphoma, have happened; as have blood, liver, and nervous system problems, serious allergic reactions, and new or worsening heart failure. before treatment, get tested for tb. tell your doctor if you've been to areas where certain fungal infections are common, and if you've had tb, hepatitis b, are prone to infections, or have flu-like symptoms or sores. don't start humira if you have an infection. if you're still just managing your symptoms, talk with your gastroenterologist about humira.
3:42 pm
with humira, remission is possible. is it keeps the food out. for me before those little pieces would get in between my dentures and my gum and it was uncomfortable. just a few dabs is clinically proven to seal out more food particles. super poligrip is part of my life now. but...my doctor recommended prilosec otc 7 years ago, 5 years ago, last week. just 1 pill each morning. 24 hours and zero heartburn, it's been the number 1 doctor recommended brand for 10 straight years, and it's still recommended today. use as directed

back now with the other breaking news of the day donald trump received classified briefing on hacking during the slerks but he is not saying whether he accepts the conclusion of the intelligence community. after the meeting officials release declassified version with blunt condition collusion
3:44 pm
"we assess russian vladimir putinarded influenced campaign. after trump brief by whether he accepts or rejects there assessment. releasing that read "while russia and kmien are consis stantly business and organization including the democratic national committee was no affect on the outcome of the election that's voting machine. that's a part of the his statement. trump told "new york times" they are driving this story. this is a political witch hunt. they got beaten badly in the election, i won more than ronald reagan, they are embarrassed by it. it's a witch hunt and they
3:45 pm
focused on this. joini joining me now, nice to see bo both of you. we have been on the story all afternoon. with ke start when wa we learned on that report. >> we learned what the intelligence community was willing to say publicly in one sense they saw a dispute. there's been an argument about what the motive of the hacking operation was. they said it was ordered by vladimir putin and it was to discredit hillary clinton in the end to benefit donald trump. and they talked about a broader propaganda campaign but the use of russian -- what was unfortunate and disappointing was there was no evidence. they did not explain how they
3:46 pm
reached the conclusion. i was hoping see more of that. we know some specific examples. there were intercrepts that was not in the report. i'm seeing on twitter now as we report the story on the web. skept ticks are not convinced. >> putin and russia government apyred to help president-elect trump contrasting her unfavorably to him. russias did this but they did this with intent of impact the election whether or not it worked. >> that's true. if we look at what's going on, here is the problem with this, i have been critical of the agencies over years as a result
3:47 pm
of this. there's a transparency problem. one of the issues that intelligence community has to protect are there sources and methods. if you layout how you know something, what happens is the opposing side can close those gaps. if you say we did this in this way, that shows we need to address that issue to stop it. all you can do in a declassified briefing is layout with the ultimate conclusionings are that's the problem. >> in the conversation with the "new york times" prior to the briefing, donald trump once again took a shot at folks like you. a lot of mistakes were made by the intelligence community in the past weapons of mass destruction was one of the great mistakes of all the time. now thae that he has the
3:48 pm
briefing, his attention has been drown to fort lauderdale in florida and has not tweeted anything this afternoon. does he need to change his tune in order to build a relationship with the people he has to work it? >> yes he does. if it we look at what he says, i want to take you on the inside of langley and other parts of the intelligence chunt. they risk their lives, they give everything in order to provide information to the united states and they recognize what this is. this is just like people in the military, people in the state department, international journalist to do what they do. to have somebody who never sacrifice anything belittle what they do, but to actually undercut their value and what this means is horrific in the eyes of people who are sacrificing. it's important that he realize this is about more than just
3:49 pm
running for office. he is now going to be the president of the united states. and people in the intelligence community in the beltway at pentagon are waiting for him to l rule and act like the president. right now there's a lot of people holding their breathe and at the hurt rkts angry and frustrated, we're killing our self-s so you can get this information, the least you can do is listen to it. >> have we heard the last from donald trump, do you think we'll hear some more from him on this? >> he issued a statement following the briefing. >> we quoted it earlier. >> he did not trash the intelligence community and they noticed. he did not -- maybe it was final, maybe it was somebody else. hacking is a problem, we're not sure who did it. the question for me is will
3:50 pm
trump pivot. will he accept the unanimous findings of his intelligence agencies and that remains to be seen. >> thanks guys. more on the breaking news, intel saying putin is behind the hacking. the relationship between donald trump and putin. up next. cheesy chipotle pork quesadillas? mmmm... ravioli lasagna bake? yeah, i don't know... grilled white chicken... grab something rich, sharp and creamy. triple cheddar stuffed sliders. sold! we aim to cheese! kraft natural cheese: we make cheese for how you love cheese. all finished.umm... you wouldn't want your painter to quit part way. i think you missed a spot. so when it comes to pain relievers, why put up with just part of a day?

3:55 pm
donald trump has not said anything since intelligence briefing but he put out that statement not take ago side not saying whether he accept or did not accept conclusion of the intelligence community. how do you read everything that's played out this week? >> it's not much of a surprise to me. i brief week leeks to be a russian front for a long period of time. i believe vladimir putin hated lieutena hillary clinton for a long period of time the intelligence community reported on the ununclassified today on the house floor, jim mcgovernor standing he should not accept electoral votes casts from alabama because of the russian meddle in our election.
3:56 pm
put tin has won because swallowing the lye of what the russians did. the russia didn't put server in her basement, russian did due the change number that power donald trump forward. i'm glad donald trump is laying over the intelligence community. i'm disappointed in the media who is playing into putin hand by suggesting that putin won the election for donald trump. >> we don't know the evidence but it draws the conclusion that vladimir putin and his colleagues did it intentionally wanted to interfere with the fl election. >> the statements this have made that basically embraced the positions expressed by donald
3:57 pm
trump that u.s. relations can be improved, putin or was the enemy of the united states. it's thing that is not a surprise. any country that is been labeled been an enemy is going to reject that position. we have seen that before. i think what's problematic is what hue puts his finger on right now, here we are barely ten days out, when we're rehashing or relitigating the election even in part, even if there's a 1% sled of doubt. i think it's positive that the sbilgs community have sat down the president they have same information, classified information which we in the general public don't have, they

have starting with the -- they have to deter future threats from russia, china, iran or anyone else and they are all paying attention. >> let me ask you about rex tillerson because he tried to convince senators that his views are more nuance than have been reported, ben carter told him after meeting with him understand the importance of sanctions and recognizes that you need to have the ability to get results. so hue, let me start with you, what kind of administration are we going to see if tillerson takes that post? >> i hope an unpredictable one. we have been talking about this for decades. we don't want the soviet or russian to know what wreer going do. no one expected him to open up
3:59 pm
to china. in the report that was released today, the rourussian thought donald trump could win. they did not tell us how he is going to negotiate with us or tillerson what reis aiming to do but as nixon changed the world by going in the direction in 1972, trump may have in mismind to tilt back away from chieb, i done know if matt bebelieves that possible but i think we ought to keep our conclusions limited to see what is done by team trump once they have theirs hand on power. >> diplomacy is about deal making what distinguishes
