hello, everyone. i'm ayman mohyeldin in ft. lauderdale, florida, where the big question this morning about yesterday's horrific airport shooting is why? the airport in ft. lauderdale has reopened. we're going to get back to that in just a moment.

florida governor rick scott calling it a senseless act. he held a news conference that wrapped up moments ago promising to hold those responsible accountable. >> yesterday we experienced a hateful, evil attack on our state. pele trying to live their lives, enjoy the weekend, were senselessly murdered. it was an absolutely horrific day. the person responsible for this act will be brought to justice to the fullest extent of the law. when you've hurt one of us, you've hurt all of us. >> we're getting new details about the gunman including revelations on the state of his mental health. nearly two months ago the 26-year-old santiago claimed to the fbi that the u.s. government was forcing him to watch isis videos. his family says he suffered from mental issues. he was getting psychological treatment in alaska and here's

what his aunt told nbc news. >> translator: then he's working as security. then something got to him. it looks like he lost his mind. he would say that he would see things. i don't know. so he went to the hospital. that's what i know. that's what the mother told me who lives in puerto rico. >> santiago is in federal custody and expected to appear in court on monday. five were killed, eight wounded when the suspect opened fire inside the baggage claim area inside terminal two at ft. lauderdal/hollywood international airport. as we were mentioning the motive remains under investigation. that is central to the ongoing investigation. florida officials are are holding a news conference in just about an hour from now with more information. we'll have that for you and much more. nbc kerry sanders, you've been covering this from the beginning, one of the first

reporters on the scene. a horrific day. start with the airport. is it up to speed in terms of operations? >> it's remarkable that the airport is operational right now but that doesn't mean that people are able to necessarily get on the flights they'd like to because each airline is trying to catch up because of the delays. if you're a passenger today, you want to make a call to your airline even though they have brought the airport operation back up. in fact, you can see a little video we have here. there's a plane that took off a short time ago. some people are getting out. but this is a very big day here at the airport because this is a cruise swapout day. you have port everglades, the largest cruise terminal in the state of florida, where you have passengers getting off and passengers arriving. so getting this airport back um to full operations is key. at the same time, we have some video of the suspect. this is 26-year-old esteban

santiago who was known to law enforcement because he had gone into the fbi office telling them in alaska he thought the cia was trying to recruit him to become a member of isis. the questions that are now raised in the wake of that is if the law enforcement was aware of him, a, how is it that he was still able to have a gun, and secondly, why his name was on a no fly list? all of this coming on a day when there was so much horror and tragedy at the ft. lauderdal/hollywoo international airport. just before 1:00 p.m. friday a chaotic and horrific scene when deputies say 26-year-old esteban santiago opened fire at baggage claim in terminal two. >> there was no rhyme or reason to it. he was not yelling anything or screaming anything. just very nonchalant. just basically point, shoot, point, shoot, anyone that was in his path. >> inside, sheer terror. >> people trying to break

through doors, running over children. >> reporter: bags scattered, crowds evacuated to the tarmac. s.w.a.t. teams, deputies, the fbi responding the within minutes. >> it looks like we've got at least five or six victims so far. >> reporter: santiago who flew from anchorage to minneapolis and on to ft. lauderdale is believed, investigators say, to have retrieved a gun from his checked luggage in baggage claim, loaded it in a nearby bathroom, exited and then began shooting. >> then he basically ran out of ammunition, walked out, dropped the gun, laid face down spread-eagle until the deputy came. >> we have the shooter in custody. he's unharmed. no law enforcement fired any shots. >> reporter: when it was over, five dead, eight shot, dozens injured in the chaos. around 2:30 passengers in a different terminal fearing a second gunman. and reports of a suspicious

person in a parking garage nearby, both false alarms. >> there has been no shootingt anyplace else. >> reporter: this morning santiago is in federal custody. the question of why still unanswered. >> i hate to say it, but i think we all live with that fear that something like this could happen to any of us at any time. >> it's estimated there were perhaps more than 10,000 passengers who were stranded here at the airport. they were eventually bussed to a staging area where they were finding hotels, but ayman, interestingly, private industry stepped in. many others availed themselves of that. they're waking up this morning trying to figure out how to get out of here and quite frankly many thankful to be alive. >> this is the second time in a year this community in florida has been hit by tragedy. incredible to see the community come together.

gabe gutierrez is outside the hospital in ft. lauderdale where dozens are being treated. good morning. how many victims remain in the hospital this morning and can you tell us their status? >> reporter: good morning. the eldest daughter of one of the victims terry andress confirms to msnbc that her father was among five people killed in the shooting. we understand he was from virginia and he was 62 years old and traveling with his wife to go on a cruise in ft. lauderdale. spokesperson for the norfolk naval shipyard also confirms he was an employee there. very trammic situation. eight others were shot. at least 30 people were injured in some form or fashion immediately following the shooting and all the panic.

in the chaos, several more people were injured. governor rick scott visited with some of the family members of those that were injured last night at broward health center. here's what he said a fe fu moments ago. >> i talked to some of the victims l.a. night. the one lady that was shot in the arm, she's planning to -- she thinks she'll be darnled today. the others don't know yet. some are severely injured so i'm going to pray for them. but we're blessed. we have very good health care here. >> reporter: again, we do not have an exact condition for many of those victims but governor rick scott says that's a possibility some might be discharged today. five people were shot and killed, eight others were shot. five of them being trauma

patients. yesterday doctors said everyone was in stable condition but governor rick scott said there are still in surgery that the point and several fighting for their lives. terry andress, his eldest daughter confirms he was among those killed. we expect to get more information later today. >> gabe gutierrez, thank you very much. msnbc law enforcement analyst, retired atf special agent in charge and hostage negotiator. good to have you with us. break down the legalities of traveling with guns and ammunitions. people questioning why was an individual with a known mental health past or questions about his mental health past allowed to have a gun and more

importantly not on any no fly list? >> right. first of all, he's not prohibited under federal law from having a gun if h has not been committed by a court for a mental issue, adjudicated as a mental defective is what the law says. he's not been committed bay court. he had a voluntary admission after bizarre bethey've he exhibited at the fbi office. the app reported in january of 2016 he strangled and assaulted his girlfriend but that will case was still pending. if he had been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence he would not be allowed to have a gun. those kind of trip wires might have prevented this guy from having a gun because we don't know when he got the gun. did he get it after a year ago with the domestic violence after he went to the fbi office? it's the check system if those situations were different, just

a little bit different, you know, could have blocked him. >> something we've talked about in the past, when you compare airport attacks, thinking about brussels, istanbul, multiple attacks hitting some of the soft targets of the airport. does this attack and your expertise highlight one of the vulnerabilities that we have at our airports across the country, the baggage claim area, the ticketing check-in? where do you see the vulnerabilities as a result of this attack? >> yes. vulnerability a at an airport is like it is in any crowded venue. it's public access. someone can drive to front of the airport like you described in europe, get out even with a rifle an start shooting. now, there's a lot of police around airports. and we should point out that the broward county sheriff's deputy according to the witness you interviewed this morning, ayman, was there in less than a minute. the shooter shot for 45 seconds and 10 second later a uniformed

deputy there and arrests him. you can't get a response much faster than that. the baggage claim is a public area. are we going to ke decide to secure that? probably not going to happen. more cops matter. that's better. but the trip wire for this guy was earlier in alaska with a law like a gun violence restraining order because when he went to the fbi office saying the government's programming him to talk to isis or whatever, that's the time a gun violence restraining order comes into play. then maybe you can interrupt this guy. >> that's going to be the focus of the investigation. jim kavanagh, thank you for that input. that'll do it for me from here for now. at the bottom of the hour we'll have a report from anchorage, alaska, where the suspect recently served in the u.s. military.

authorities are not saying if they've determined a motive for the ft. lauderdale shooting. we'll check in with ayman mohyeldin in a bit. million of americans are in the path of a winter storm. heavy snowfall, ice, and sleet. they're hitting areas from texas to new england.

moments ago, north carolina governor roy cooper said the storm has led to at least 260 auto collisions in his state. he called the storm a real and continuing threat to the area. join meganow, meteorologist bonnie schneider. good morning. what can you tell us? >> good morning, dara. the governor advises stay home, good advice if you live in georgia, alabama, north carolina, any of the areas here, into virginia, where we're watching for some of the heaviest snowfall totals even into southern maryland. this is where we have a blizzard warning in effect. the slow is changing over sleet and some freezing rain in raleigh, not too much an accumulation in raleigh, but with what a gradient for the storm. you had just 25 miles north and west. you'll get a lot more snow in so many places, but that changes once you start looking to the east. the gradient we're talking about not existing on the east, kind of in the other way. further east, t more snow you get. updated recast tals anticipated like montauk, long island, islip, a little further inland, likely to see a foot of

snow from this storm system and several inches in nassau county, even several inches, possibly up to 6 at jfk, 3 to 4, new york city. look at boston. a foot of snow expected. on the high side. nantucket, 12 to 18 inches. but 2 feet of snow is possible in plymouth, mass. it's snowing right now across much of northern new jersey into southern connecticut. you're also looking at higher snowfall totals in and around new london, connecticut, for example, but notice the temperatures behind the system as it exits parts of the south. that cold air filters in. boy, is it cold. cold enough for everything to stay as snow or ice, whatever you have on the ground, even more ice to accumulate in north carolina and it's so much worse to have to drive on icy roads than snowy roads. you'll see both in the state of north carolina. so just be careful. this storm is nowhere near over yet. another one that's ramping up on the other side of the country. we're looking at powerful potent storm saturday into sunday with really heavy rain. heavy rain that you have not seen in sometime in northern

california. this is likely to create flooding from smoe melt many the mountains and along the burn areas so something to chemoclose watch on for today and tomorrow out west. >> bonnie, thank you. it is a good day to stay home. the president-elect this morning is standing by one of his take-aways from a report pi top u.s. intelligence agencies about russia's interference in november's election. he tweeted this morning, "intelligence stated very strongly there was absolutely no evidence that hacking affected the election results. vote mag sheens not touched!" with that report concluded, vladimir putin ordered a campaign to influence the u.s. presidential electi. here's president obama's reaction in an abc news exclusive interview which will air tomorrow morning. >> we've seen a lot of commentary lately where there were republicans or pundits or cable commentators who seem to have more confidence in vladimir

putin than fellow americans because those fellow americans are democrats. that cannot be. >> does that include the president-elect? >> well, what i will say is t t that -- and i said ourselves right after the election, we have to remind ourselves we're on the same team. vut season not on our team. >> also this morning the trump transition team officially announcing the president-elect's intention to nominate former united states senator dan coats to serve as the director of national intelligence. incomes's r nbc's ron allen joins us. what more is the president-elect saying about the findings of the intel agencies? >> reporter: it's ban quiet morning at trump tower but a busy morning in cyberspace for the president-elect tweeting out at least four different responses to this hacking issue. let me read you another one. he said the only reason the hacking of the poorly defended dnc is discussed is that the lost by the dems was so big that

they were totally embarrassed. that's been the tone and tenor of much of what the president-elect has had to say by twitter this morning on the central question of whether the russians hacked into the election and campaign process. he still remains more skeptical than convinced. the conclusion, a covert russian campaign ordered by president vladimir putin to help donald trump become president. russia's goals were to undermine public faith in the u.s. democratic process, denigrate secretary clinton and harm her electability and potential presidency. we further assess putin and the russian government developed a clear preference for president-elect trump. but . trump, who earlier had again dismissed charges of russian hacking as a witch-hunt in a statement only acknowledged that russia, china, and other countries are engaged in cyber hacking and emphasized there was absolutely no effect on the outcome of the election.

while the report did not make a political conclusion, it cheerily pointed a finger at putin. >> i would have liked to see the president-elect finally acknowledge the obvious. everybody else has accepted this. it's time for him to. >> reporter: afterwards the vice president-elect trying to make peace with intelligence officials and operatives said to be angered by disparaging comments by the soon-to-be commander in chief. >> i know the president-elect and i both appreciate the sacrifices that the men and women who serve in our intelligence services around the country and around the world provide and contributing to the safety and security of the american people. >> reporter: as mr. trump tries to move on, another signature campaign issue suddenly back in the spotlight. >> and mexico will pay for the wall. >> reporter: republicans in congress now considering whether to build it with u.s. taxpayer dollars, billions, to get the project moving and get mexico to pay later. in a telephone interview,

mr. trump pushed back at the yld he won't fulfill his promise, telling "the new york times," we're going to get reimbursed. mexico's leaders say they oppose the wall and say they're never going to pay for it. on the cyber issue, the president-elect also said it's going to be one of his top priorities to take office, appointing a team, a task force, to come up with a plan to strengthen america's defenses. during the first 90 days he's in the white house. >> ron allen, thank you. for more analysis, let's bring in msnbc's alex seitz wauld and yamiche alcindor. great to have you both this morning. >> good morning. thanks. >> i want to start with you, alex. both of you on this intel report. but alex, what's your take-away on this? >> how unequivocal this report is really stunning when you think about it. a 25-page report stating with

very little uncertainty that vladimir putin personally affected this campaign, that he wanted to help donald trump get elected and he was behind this big coordinated effort we all sort of knew was going on during the election with the seib attacks on one hand, trolling on social media on the other hand, and a public campaign on rt and other russian-controlled media outlets on a third venue that all of that was connected and all part of the same campaign, that the intelligence agencies are so confident about this assessment and had decided to put it out is really stunning to me and i think sort of unprecedented in at least the modern history of american politics. >> yamiche, what stuck out to you? >> part of these hacked materials were put on a website called dcleaks.com and that website russians decided wasn't getting enough traction or attention so they leaked it to wikileaks and it became a big story.

not only disdid the russians hack the system and were trying to influence an election, but they also played the media in this way. they decided they were going to make this a big story and knew julian assange was the person who could do that. as a "new york times" reporter we said in our paper we along with other media were used by these people to really continue this -- i guess further their agenda here. i think that's disturbing. not only did they hurt democracy here but also hurt the press. >> alex, let me play you what congressman adam schiff played last night. after president-elect trump declined to say whether to accept the ta intelligence agency's findings. take a listen. >> we need in congress need to be able to work with this new president to push back and fight against that and that has to start with him accepting what has happened. we need him to step up. he'll be president of the united states and he need to lead in this assault on liberal democracy.

>> alex, are you surprised the president-elect trump still refuses to ak knowledge the role russia played even after the intelligence briefing? >> donald trump has said a lot of things throughout the course of the campaign, often taken both sides of various issues to kind of put out so that his supporters can hear whichever side they prefer to hear. but on the issue of russian hacking he has been 100% consistent from day one, which is that it basically doesn't exist or that it was some 400-pound guy on his bed as he said in the first presidential debate and that it didn't help him. so he's been totally consistent on this. i think for him now it's an issue of legitimacy, more than his relationship with vladimir putin or any other issue, this was about whether he was rightly elected president of the united states and he'll defend that tooth and nail because anything to undermine that would undermine his credibility as president. >> consistency aside, yamiche, does he understand the gravity

of the hacking but doesn't want to admit it to the public? >> it's already been revealed to the public. it's about him not wanting to feel as though he's now in this position that is in some ways feeling -- doesn't feel as though he's earned it. this report lays out that vladimir putin was really gunning for him and wanted him to be president. even though millions of people voted for him and there's no evidence that the voting systems were hacked, but this idea that he had to be helped by a foreign government and had to be kind of boosted over the edge i think really hurts his the way he looks at the presidency and the way he looks at his own way to earn this. >> interesting days ahead. alex seitz-wald and yamiche alsip dor, thank for being with us. still ahead, ayman mohyeldin joins us from ft. lauderdale with more on the suspected gunman and what we're learning about his life while he served in the national guard.

we've been listening to florida governor rick scott holding a news conference on the latest on the attack that kill five people. here's what he had to say about the victims being treated at the hospital. >> some of the victims were still in surgery fighting for their life. it's just senseless acts. trying to understand exactly what happened. there will be more information that will come out. we'll know exactly what happens. they will be able to figure out what to do. >> as you heard there from the governor, a lot of questions remain unanswered. chief among them the reason behind the attack, what possibly motivated esteban santiago to go on this shooting rampage.

pete williams has been talking to law enforcement since the beginning of the investigation. good to have you with us. talk to us about how close officials are too to trying to figure out the motive and the criteria they're going through to establish a motive. >> they're not close at all. they have work to do to trace his movements, look at his social media, his computers, talk to people who knew him. they don't know at this point whether to all the mcallister this an act of terrorism or not. on the one hand, they say he showed an interest in isis and downloaded some of the terror group's videos but he claimed it was voices in his head that made him watch them. officials say santiago was undergoing treatment for ongoing mental health problems complaining he was hearing voices. a few months ago he walked into the fbi's office in anchorage complaining the cia was forcing him to join isis. officials say local police were called and he went voluntarily to a mental health facility for

treatment. his aunt and uncle in union city, new jersey, say they believe he developed problems after an overseas military assignment. he showed up for the national guard in 2007 while living in puerto rico where the family is from. the records show he was on duty as a combat engineer for ten months in iraq, returning five years ago. he was darischarged last august. family members say he went to alaska looking for work where he had a son and was receiving psychological counseling there. some people who were with him on the flight from minneapolis to ft. lauderdale say he got into some kind of altercation on board but it apparently wasn't serious enough for the airline to call the police and they didn't meet the plane. he'll be charged monday in federal court, but this morning it's still a mystery why he did this and why he went to ft. lauderdale. he does have three brothers who live in naples, florida, but

that's the only known connection he has to this state, ayman. >> justice correspondent pete williams, thank you. suspected shooter esteban santiago was living in anchorage, alaska where he recently served in the military. it's also where his flight originated from before making its way here t ft. lauderdale. nbc's gotti schwartz is in anchorage for us this morning. talk to us about what you've learned about the suspect's life in anchorage and what possibly may have led him to do this. >> reporter: good morning, ayman. this was the small home that he was living in with his girlfriend, we believe. we saw fbi agents removing things well into last night. his brother told nbc news he moved to alaska to find work after that deployment to iraq and his family described his time in iraq as very traumatic for him. he came back. his brother says here in alaska he got in several fights. he was working as a security

guard after he was discharged from the alaska national guard for issues with performance. and then at some point last year, november, he went to the fbi headquarters in anchorage, walked in, asking to talk to fbi agents and here's what he told them. take a listen. >> the individual did walk into our anchorage office in november. he came in and spoke with fbi agents at that time. he clearly stated that he did not intend to arm anyone. however, his erratic behavior concerned fbi agents that were interviewing him and they contacted local police and turned him over to local police. he was taken into custody by the local police and transported to a medical facility for a mental health evaluation. >> reporter: as you heard pete williams reporting he told --

our sources are saying he told investigators that he was hearing voices and that he believed that his mind was being controlled by the cia and he was being told to watch isis videos. we do know a little bit more about some of thiz rns with police here in anchorage. anchorage lice were called into this apartment sometime last year because of a domestic violence incident. his girlfriend alleged that he tried to strangle her. and when police got here they could not find him. those charges were later dropped. they were later dismissed. but still a mystery as to why he boarded that flight and why he went to ft. lauderdale on friday. ayman, back to you. >> all right. indeed it is, a mystery with growing questions by the hour. gadi schwartz in anchorage, alaska, for us. thank you for that. that does it for me here for this hour. we're of course awaiting a news conference to begin at the top of the hour with the fbi and the broward county sheriff's office. of course we'll have that for you and much more when we come

right now we're taking a live look at the airport in ft. lauderdale. it just reopened this past hour. it was closed after esteban santiago allegedly opened fire killing five and injuring dozens more. this morning the 26-year-old is in federal custody expected to make his fist court appearance on monday. nbc's ayman mohyeldin is live on the scene and will bring us the latest on a possible motive in just a few minutes. to the east coast today where millions of americans are feeling the effects of a massive binter storm covering areas from texas to new england. it's snow that will total more than a foot in some areas

leading to declarations of emergency in multiple states. let's go to nbc's tammy leitner in norfolk, virginia, where a blizzard warning is in effect. it looks pretty bad out there. how bad is it? >> reporter: i can vouch for it. it's bad, dara. this is historic. we don't get weather like this in the south. dozens of states are affected. millions of people. let's take a look at some video from tennessee where snowplows are working around the clock. and the problem here is they're not used to this type of weather. one snowplow started sliding. it was coming to rescue two buses. it narrowly avoided those buses and ended up crashing into cars. in other parts of tennessee, the cars are stopped on the interstate, not going anywhere. long lines. in georgia, heavy snow, making it impossible to get around. in atlanta, they got about a half a foot of snow in one day.

keep in mind, this is the amount that they normally get in an entire winter. back here we've got a blizzard warning going on until 10:00. you know, keep in mind, this is a small town. they're out here plowing right now. but the concern is they're not going to be able to get to all the the streets, making it very treacherous to get around. dara? >> tammy leitner braving a blizzard for us in norfolk, virginia. stay safe. now out west people in california and along the coast are bracing for a separate storm that's triggering dangerous flooding and mudslides. let's go to nbc's steve patterson live in san francisco. what's the situation out there? >> reporter: dara, i don't know if i'd want to trade places with tammy leitner at this point. it looks pretty bad there. right now we are starting to get the front edge of this storm that is coming. it is raining. it is raining sideways. it is not a light rain, but this will not be the worst of it, i guarantee you that. forecasters are predicting

anywhere from an event that is a quarter century in the making to ten years in the making at least. we're going to see some of the worst flooding, they're saying, in the past decade. this hasn't happened really since about 2005, 2006. the last time it rained on the rose parade, $300 million in damage they say from a survey there that was done from a storm in similar size and magnitude. this storm is being brought on by a few things. one, this is an in-between storm. we've seen a recent winter storm hit some of the mountain regions s so those areas have been covered with snow. now this storm will be a lot warmer which means a lot of that snow pack is going to melt down and that's going to be a huge cause for concern for flooding. as the days move on we'll get more of what's called an atmospheric river also known as a pineapple express, which is just basically like a hose that is dumping moisture on this

evidence that hacking affected the election results. voting machines not touched. joining me now is hugh hewitt, host of "hugh hewitt show" and also an msnbc political analyst. great to have you here this morning. >> thank you. >> i have to ask you, are you surprised by the president-elect's information that he learned during yesterday's intelligence briefing? >> no, i think he is intent on making one point very clear. half of the democratic voters for secretary clinton believe that the vote totals were manipulated by the russians. all the intelligence agencies agree. that did not happen. the president-elect is driving home a point that the vote totals were not impacted. i think we can't say that enough. it doesn't come as a surprise to me t russis were behind this. i have been saying that for four or five months and everyone noodz that wikileaks was a front for the long time said that. but i wish president obama listened to then candidate romney four years ago instead of

mocking his concern over russia. i wish we hadn't given them a reset button because vladimir putin is a sinister guy. he's a kgb agent. i do like that lindsey graham said to the president-elect no one is saying you're not president. everyone is agreeing you won legitimately, let's focus on the fact that the rushz russians ar taking active measures and we need to push back when you are president because our current president has not done so. >> but in keeping with trump's stance on putin, does it seem like the president-elect is more trusting of putin than of our own intelligence agencies? >> absolutely not. i believe that president-elect trump is going to be open to working with anyone. after all murdered millions of people. president obama went down to cuba and worked with the castro brothers. they are dictators and killers and murderers.

you have to deal with tough guys around the world and president-elect trump will deal with whomever is in the united states best interest to deal with. he can't do worse with russia than president obama has done. i doubt president-elect trump will erase and invite russia back into the middle east. but i believe he does trust our intelligence agency. he does not, however, trust the media. i think most of everything we should focus on is that donald trump is raging a war with the media narrative that his election is somehow delegitimate. only one democrat had said it impacted the election results as far as i can see. jim mcgovern stood up on the floor of the house yesterday and said the electoral votes from alabama shouldn't be counted because of the russian interference in the election. that's a lunatic position. it had some impact but as speaker ryan said, the russians didn't tell secretary clinton not to go to wisconsin and didn't tell her not to go to michigan and waste money and take volunteers that were headed to michigan and send them back to iowa.

the clinton campaign lost the election. donald trump won the election. the russians meddled in the elections. the russians are not our friends. we should, however, i agree with the president-elect on this, move on because he gets sworn in in two weeks and we will have mike palm ma pampao and general kelly at homeland security. it will be a new team of professionals. >> well, let's move on because i want to talk about the president-elect's plan for funding the border wall up front and then seeking repayment from mexico. yes or no. do you really think this is going to happen? >> well, i think the border fence is going to get built. it was authorized in 2006. 850 miles that didn't get built-in 2008 it was authorized to be 207 miles. i was saying for years they have to build the border fence a double wired high wide. and i believe donald trump won a
