good morning, everyone. it is monday, february 6 alongside louis burgdorf. take it away. >> let's get right to houston as super bowl li occurs. president george h.w. bush and his wife barbara were able to be there for the coin toss. and there was a forced fumble in the beginning of the second capping a 71 yard drive for the game's first points. on the next drive, julio jones put atlanta in a good position

with the toe-dragging catch along the sideline before austin hooper hauls in the touchdown pass from the nfl mvp matt ryan extending the atlanta lead to 14-0. new england falls into the early hole and things get worse as tom brady's passes are intercepted and returns 86 yards for a pick six in the patriots' next possession. and kevin coleman for a 6 yard score. the pats fans are absolutely stunned. while most were watching and up counting new england out before halftime, the patriots began chipping away at the 25-point deficit and ran into the biggest comeback in super bowl history. they got down to the last minute in the fourth quarter. the patriots just eight points back on the final drive kept alive with this miraculous catch by julian edleman managing to come up with the bag after being

deflected and bobbled near the ground. it leads to a 1 yard touchdown by james white followed by a successful two-point conversion. that would cap the 19-point fourth quarter and tie the game. the patriots hold off the falcons for the remainder of the regulation time and win possession in overtime wasting little time to march 75 yards on eight plays ending on a 2 yard rush by white. the running bowl super bowl record-tying touchdown of the game. the patriots score 31 unanswered points shocking atlanta 34-28 for the franchise's fifth championship title. what a game. all five titles come during the brady/belichick era, both of whom have been to the game seven times. brady set a slew of super bowl records including most passing yards with 466. >> thank you to all our fans. everyone back in boston, new

england, we love you. you've been with us all year. we're bringing this sucker home! >> i went to bed at halftime, just saying. wow! now to politics, donald trump's executive order banning travel from seven muslim states is on hold. the administration is now awaiting a ruling from an appeals court after george bush appointed a judge from seattle and blocked the order temporarily. and pete williams has more on where the order goes from here. >> alex, a federal court could rule as early as tonight, which would be the next step in the legal saga. for now the travel restrictions remain on hold because of the seattle judge's order on friday in a lawsuit brought by washington and minnesota. just after midnight saturday, the justice department asked the federal appeals court on the west coast to lift the judge's order. the government said that congress gave the president not the courts the authority to control the borders, but the

appeals court declined to rule immediately. and instead asked the states and the government to submit more legal briefs. the last of those court filings are due tonight at 6:00 eastern, 3:00 pacific. after that, the court could rule at any time. so nothing is going to change for now. and the trump executive order remains on hold. but whichever side loses in the appeals court can ask for an emergency order from the u.s. supreme court. the justices would act quickly but it could take another day or so. alex? >> pete williams, thank you for that. meantime, the state department complied with judge robart's rule iing reversing th visa actions. tweeting at 7:59 a.m., when a country is no longer able to say who can and cannot come in and out, especially for reasons of safety and security, big trouble. seven minutes later he tweeted, interesting that certain middle eastern countries agree with the

ban. they know if certain people are allowed in, it's death and destruction. then sixth minutes at 8:12 a.m., the opinion of the so-called judge, which essentially takes law enforcement away from our country, is ridiculous and wl be overturned. the president's undermining of the judge less than a week after saying the acting attorney general had betrayed the department of justice drew condemnations with some like republican senator ben sas coming to the confirmation of the george bush nominee. >> we don't have so-called judges, we don't have so-called presidents, we have people from three different parts of the government to defend the constitution. and it is important we do better civics education for our kids. and the president's attack on judge robart drew different reactions from leaders on capitol hill. chuck schumer tied it to the supreme court battle saying, with each action testing the constitution, and each personal

attack on a judge, president trump raises the bar even higher for judge gorsuch's nomination to serve on the supreme court. his ability to be an independent check will be front and center throughout the confirmation process. and the republican speaker paul ryan said in a statement, this president is hardly the first one to express frustration with the judicial branch. what's important is his administration is complying with the ruling. and taking the proper steps to resolve the issue quickly. this is our system of divided government and i'm confident that when the process runs its course the order will be upheld. and louis, it was donald trump's turn to give the president's annual super bowl interview. and in speaking with bill o'reilly, he made controversial comments about russian president vladimir putin. >> do you respect putin? >> i do respect him. >> do you? why? >> well, i respect a lot of people but that doesn't mean i'm going to get along with him. he's a leader of his country. i say it's better to get along with russia than not. and if russia helps us in the

fight against isis, which is a major fight, and islamic terrorism all over the world, major fight, that's a good thing. will i get along with him? i have no idea. >> he's a killer, though. putin's a killer. >> well, there are a lot of killer. we got a lot of killers. what, you think our country is so innocent? you think our country is so innocent? >> i don't know of any government leader that is are killers. >> take a look at what we have done, too. we have made a lot of mistakes. i've been against the war in iraq in the beginning. >> a lot of mistakes -- >> a lot of killers around, believe me. >> speaking on "meet the press" yesterday, mike pence rejected the criticism that the president was making a moral equivalency between the united states and russia. >> president trump has been willing to be critical of our country's actions in the past. but what you're hearing there is a determination by the president of the united states to not lot

representative liz cheney of wyoming said, the president's statement suggesting moral e conservative lens between putin's russia and the united states of america deeply troubling and wrong. rett stevens says, trump pupts u.s. on moral par with putin's russia. never in history has a president slandered his country like this. >> it doesn't mean that he agrees with him. it doesn't mean that he will fight him. and it doesn't mean he won't stand up to him. as far as the back and forth of bill o'reilly, let me tell you, i have had hundreds and hundreds of conversations with the president over the years. the president likes to volley back and forth with people. when he's being challenged, he likes to challenge back. but the fact of the matter is i know president trump believes that america is morally superior to russia.

in his super bowl interview, the president continued to forcefully insist that millions of voters were illegal amid his push for a probe. but other members of his party were not sharing the willingness to pursue a federal investigation. >> if you say, for example, that there are 3 million illegal aliens who voted, and then you don't have the data to back it up, some people say that's irresponsible for a president to say that. is there validity to that? >> many people have come out to say i'm right. >> but you have to have data to back it up. >> it doesn't have to do with the vote, although that's the end result. look, bill, we can be babies, but you take a look at registrations, you have illegals, it is really bad. >> there's no reason to spend any federal money investigating

that. i think the states can take a look at this issue. many of them have tried to tighten voter rolls, tried to purge people who are dead and otherwise not eligible to vote. >> now a new poll shows president trump starting off with an unfavorable impression among most americans. the cnn/orc poll shows 53% disapprove of the president's job approval. 44% approve of his job approval. it's the lowest approval rating for the newest elected president on record. 53% oppose the suspension of the refugee program. and when asked about terrorism, 46% say it makes the u.s. less safe. 41% say it makes the u.s. safer. and 12% say it makes no difference. and asked if the executive order is an attempt to ban muslims ,

55% say yes, 44% say no. >> you know this is not a muslim ban. if it were, i would be against it. we are a tolerant pluralistic country. we are and we will be. it's really important. the owner of the florida panthers hockey tim vincent viola has withdrawn as president trump's nominee for secretary of the army. viola made a decision to drop out due to concerns it would be too difficult to untangle himself from his business ties. in a statement viola said, i am deeply honored to have been considered for this post and appreciate the confidence president trump showed in me. i offer my continued support for president trump and his administration. viola graduated from west point back in 1977 and the first of president trump's nominees to drop out before consideration. the pentagon released a statement in response to the news saying in part, secretary mattis is disappointed but understands and respects mr. viola's decision. the secretary will recommend to

that was a dash camera from a police officer there. >> whoa! >> that may have made it all the way down to the ground. maybe a meteor there in northeast illinois this morning. the story of the week is going to start the week warm. severe weather. and then possibly a snowstorm in the northeast to end the week. so some showers and thunderstorms in birmingham this morning. not a lot of horrible weather, but downpours in tupelo. later tonight, like after 8:00 p.m., 7 million people at risk of severe weather. then we're going to get large hail out of this, maybe damaging winds. from st. louis to springfield through the ozarks, little rock, maybe late to memphis, keep an eye as you go to bed tonight. you may wake up in the middle of the night with lightning and hail possibly. and then as we go into tuesday, we get 22 million people in warnings for isolated tornadoes on tuesday into wednesday. this is for kentucky, tennessee and down into alabama. maybe some storms towards atlanta late in the day also. so this is not going to be like

british monarch, she's the first to reach 65 years on the throne. to commemorate the keep's sapphire june lbilee, they issu this picture of her decked out in jewels from her father. and civilian casualties in afghanistan have hit a record high. according to the u.n. report, 3500 civilians were kill in 2016 while merely 8,000 civilians were wounded. that's a 6% increase. well, president trump says he's up instructed homeland security to check people coming into the u.s., quote, very carefully, after a federal appeals court declined to immediately reinstate his controversial executive order on immigration. the travel restrictions affecting people from seven muslim majority countries have been on hold ever since friday night when seattle federal judge james robart, a george w. bush appointee, ruled on a lawsuit

brought by the states of washington and minnesota halting that order. robart who in a seven-page ruling that the executive order, quote, adversely affects the states' residents in areas of employment, education, business, family relations and freedom to travel. just after midnight saturday, the department of justice filed an appeal asking that the courts lift the order immediately, arguing that congress gave the president and not the courts the authority to control who comes into the country. the appeals court declined a quick ruling instead to mandate more legal briefs from both sides. and just this morning, lawyers for washington state and minnesota have told a federal appellate court there's a risk of, quote, unleashing chaos again if the ruling were reversed, in effect, lifting the ban. the appeals court is up likely to settle the issue because whichever side loses could make an appeal to the supreme court. meanwhile, refugees and visa holders from the seven countries affected by the ban are racing to take advantage of the latest court action. nbc's kelly o'donnell reports.

regime of vladimir putin. and liz cheney calls that comment deeply troubling and wrong. the top comments coming from mitch mcconnell and standout because mcconnell said he doesn't want to weigh in on any controversial involving president trump. and when it comes to federal judges, senator mcconnell must carry the load trying to get president trump's first supreme court nominee confirmed. alex? >> kelly o'donnell, thank you for that. and pushing back on the moral equivalence between russia and the united states, the senate's most powerful republican mitch mcconnell. >> well, look, putin's a former kgb agent, he's a thug, the russians annexed crimea and invaded ukraine and messed around in our elections. no, i don't think there's any equivalency in the way the russians conduct themselves and the way the united states does. we don't operate in any way the way the russians do. i think there's a clear distinction here that all americans understand. and no, i would not have

characterized it that way. >> senator mcconnell was also circumspect when asked about the people coming from the seven majority muslim countries and urged cautious singling out judges. after the president took to media to against the executive order. >> i think interfering with the kind of travel or suggesting some kind of religious test. we need to avoid doing that kind of thing. we all want to try to keep terrorists out of the united states. but we can't shut down travel. we certainly don't want muslim allies who have fought with us in countries overseas to not be able to travel to the united states. we need to be careful about this. >> you can say to yourself, a constitutional conservative, do you have concerns that the president is making about the judiciary? >> yeah, i think it is best not

to single out judges for criticism. we all get disappointed from time to time. the outcome in courts on things that we care about. but i think it is best to avoid criticize judges individually. more news from president trump's super bowl interview. the president updated the timing on how obamacare may be repealed and replaced. >> can americans in 2017 expect a new health care plan rolled out by the trump administration? this year. >> yeah, in the process and maybe it will take until sometime into next year, but we are certainly going to be in the process. very complicated. obamacare is a disaster. you have to remember, obamacare doesn't work. so we are putting in a wonderful plan. it's statutorily taking a while to get. we're going to be putting it in fairly soon. i think that, yes, i would like to say by the end of the year, at least the rudiments, but we should have something within the year and the following year. >> last month as president-elect trump pledged to repeal and replace the affordable care act

the united states saying, i, donald trump, i'm going to take on wall street. these guys are getting away with murder. and then suddenly he appoints all the billionaires, his major financial adviser comes from goldman sachs and now he's going to dismantle legislation that protects consumers. another story we're following, a new york subway car was vandalized this weekend with swastikas and anti-similar attic slogans written across every window and advertisement. the vandalism was discovered by a group of passengers on the number one train saturday night. after realizing the offensive material was written in black sharpie, several passengers used hand sanitizer to erase the graffiti. that train was rendered graffiti-free within two minutes. meanwhile, chicago authorities released video of a suspect wanted in connection of the vandalism of the downtown synagogue. the front window of the chicago loop synagogue was broken and two swastika stickers were posted on the front door. authorities opened a hate crime

arkansas, portions of missouri. this is late tonight, 7 million people have to deal with the possibility of damaging winds and isolated large hail. not too many tornadoes late tonight. tomorrow into tuesday the severe weather threat continues from indianapolis to columbus. a huge area. it includes 22 million people. thankfully, the coverage isn't that great, but again, the isolated tornadoes, another heads-up day there from birmingham northwards from indianapolis to columbus. here's today's forecast, the late storm system. and it's a snow system in seattle. they have been getting claberred. three to six inches. on tuesday, the parade in boston for the championship. we have rain, snow and sleet mixed in. but it will be pretty mild. by boston standards, it won't be bad. it will be a big party anyways. as things get more interesting, as this cold air comes down from the north, things get a little more interesting going into wednesday night and thursday. over the weekend, our computers were hinting at the storm going off the coast and developing.

last night they moved it closer to the coast. our european model actually nails it to areas of eastern new england with a decent snowstorm come thursday morning. again, minor blow for areas in philadelphia and the new england harbor. this would be a big deal in timing for schools, so we'll have to watch it. the american model is more bullish with northern new england, but not a lot of snow for southern new england. again, still a possibility. we'll watch it going throughout the next coupling of days. keep in mind, if you are travel plans from philly, new york, hartford, boston, early thursday it could be dicy with snow. >> and there will be no spirits in boston on thursday no matter what the weather holds. and kellyanne conway and chelsea clinton got into a twitter spat over the weekend. the former first daughter tweeting, quote, very grateful no one seriously hurt in the louvre attack or the completely

government announced the end to an executive order to prevent those with criminalization in the wake of offenses. the sixth consecutive day as roughly 5,000 romania took to the streets in protest of the prime minister and his administration calling on them totep down. joining us with more from london, nbc news correspondent lucy cavanaugh. lucy, good morning to you. this means more instability in this region, it's a region of american concern, there's now increased volatility, what is the latest? >> reporter: absolutely, alex. these have been the largest demonstrations in romania in the capital of bucharest and across the country since the fall of communism back in 1989. these protesters have gotten largely what they wanted, as you say, the jordanian government canceled a dekreeg to protect public officials who abused their office from prosecution. the government initially argued the changes were needed to reduce prison overcrowding to align certain laws with the constitution, but it was these
