face. this is day one of something that's going to go on all week. people apparently have a lot to say. that does it for us tonight. we will see you again tomorrow. now it's time for "the last word after trump's national security adviser michael flynn resigned last week, trump offered the position to retired admiral robert harwood widely respected by officials in both parties. but harwood rejected the proposal. harwood was asked to reconsider, which he did, but according to msnbc, he said no a second time after watching the president's press conference on thursday. huh, what about that press conference would make him not want to work for donald trump? >> lots of things are done with uranium, including some bad things. >> can you imagine having to brief that guy on national security? this morning the president

has a new national security advis adviser, lieutenant general mcmaster is getting support from both sides of the aisle. and breitbart's editor has been disinvited to this year's cp cpac. and this morning we're waiting to hear the name of four americans that were killed on board an australian plane crash. hey, everyone. i'm alex witt alongside ayman mohyeldin and louis burgdorf.

strategist and began early on in iraq. for more, we have more to give us a sense on the general's career from cal perry. cal? >> reporter: general mcmaster is known on capitol hill for two reasons, for what he's done on the battlefield. he has an impressive combat record. he was awarded the silver captain for what he did in the first gulf war. in the second gulf war, he commanded troops. at the time he was a surcolonel. that helped him then become on the advisory council for general petraeus, again, specifically looking at the counter insurgency efforts across the country. he wrote a book called "dereliction of duty." the book took a look at the joint chiefs of staff during vietnam and looked at how they

fed information to politicians at that time. he believes that that was, as he put it, and of course the title of the book, a "dereliction of duty." >> macmaster's book has surged o number one on amazon. and many members are jittery over the way it has been run so far and the ousting of general michael flynn. while the president discussed his role into general michael flynn's departure, he also looked into the close relationship with the president of china. >> i am very grateful to work with the president of the united

states. and we honor general flynn's work in the united states of america. and i fully agree with the president to aor general flynn's signation. it was handled properly and in a timely way. russia's ambassador to the united states died unexpectedly yesterday, one day before his 65th birthday. the russian foreign ministry says vitaly churkin was working at his desk in new york city when he collapsed. the official cause of the death is being looked at by the medical examiner, but they believe there's no foul play. samantha power tweeted she was devastated by the passing of russian u.n. ambassador. and nikki haley said, we did not

always see things eye to eye, but we send our condolences to lift up his family and to the russian people. the president rallied that refugees were created problems for sweden, which processed a record of 163,000 asylum applications in 2015 alone. but preliminary data released yesterday found no significant increase in crimes from 2015 to 2016. the council did note an increase in assaults and rapes last year and reported a drop in drug arrests and effects. in a clip from a documentary from fox, they called the filmmaker a madmen.

however, a pew research poll last spring found that 46% of swedens believe refugees are more to blame for crime than others. and 57% believe that they increase the chance of terrorism. well, yesterday the president tweeted, give the public a break. the fake news media is trying to say that large scale immigration in sweden is working out just beautifully. not. well, hours later the swedish prime minister reacted saying, we have challenges, no doubt about that, but added, we must all take responsibility for using facts correctly and for verifying anything we spread. a right-wing commentator has been dis-invited from the annual cpac gathering of political activists after video clips of him appearing to defend sexual relationships between adults and 13-year-old boys. recordings of mr. yiannopoulos making the comments spread this weekend. the gay british writer described

coming of age relationships between young boys and older men. he also talked favorably about his own sexual experiences with an older map. after initially defending yiannopoulos, matt slthey in /* invoked his invitation. he wrote, i am a gay man and a child abuse victim. i would like to restate my utter disgust to those who sexually abuse minors. president trump threatened to withdraw funds for the institution suggesting it did not allow free speech. president trump will address cpac this friday. and joining us from politico

is daniel litman. with an early good morning to you, daniel, how did we get here? what kind of pressure was cpac facing to give him off the docket? >> no one is defending milo this morning and they were forced to ditch him. they did not want other stars like ted cruz or donald trump to pull out of the event. and breitbart may lose the biggest star since milo has kind of led the sight to prominence. especially in trump's administration, everyone was talking about breitbart, but i think they are going to be forced to can him this week because there's just, there's no justification for what he said in those tapes. >> so with regard to breitbart, he's still on the payroll at this point? >> he is. and i think they're going to face real pressure today or tomorrow to fire him. and just imagine if someone from the new york times said something similar, they would probably be fired immediately. so it does seem like milo may have to find a new site to pitch

his wagon to. >> and let's talk about another thing making its way in washington, that is after the defeat in washington,lot coast is reporting that the trump administration is looking to re-do the travel ban. what are the changes expected to come out of this draft as opposed to the first one earlier? >> the first one singled out refugees and bars them from the country almost forever. this one probably will not do so, but it will continue to have a ban on -- a temporary ban, on all refugees. but i think liberal groups will still find problems with the order. and they will bring it to court. and trump is trying to find a way to thread this legal needle so it isn't struck down again. but i think the most of the order will stay the same like he had issued a few weeks ago. >> okay, we're looking forward to that. speaking of looking forward, what is coming up on playbook this morning? >> we have a fun little dinner

over, some broken into pieces. you may remember the president was asked about the recent uptick in anti-semitic attacks at a news conference last thursday. take a listen. >> what we are concerned about and what we haven't really heard being addressed is an uptick in anti-semitism and how the government is planning to take care of it. there's been a report out that 48 bomb threats have been made against jewish centers all across the country in the last several weeks. there are people who are committing anti-semitism acts. >> he said he was going to ask a simple question. but it's not. sit down, i understand your question. here's the story, number one, i am the least anti-semitic person you have seen in your entire life. number two, racism. the least racist person. in fact, we did very well relative to other people running

trump." police marked off streets as the group marched toward the white house. the events were largely peaceful, although in portland several faced off with police. seven adults were arrested and six juveniles were cited. and the debate continues in the u.k. over president trump's upcoming state visit. british lawmakers called on whether or not to withdraw his invitation as many called for it to be canceled. one lawmaker called the president a petulent child states, quote, it would be terribly wrong because it would appear the british parliament, the british nation, the british sovereign are approving of all acts of donald trump." several protesters were outside the parliament building and at times could be heard inside westminster hall. the debate was mostly symbolic as lawmakers don't have the power to cancel the visit. and the government said it will not rescind the invitation.

welcome back. we are awaiting the identities of four americans that were killed aboard an australian plane. smoke billows moments after the crash. the plane exploded on implaact. there were five people on board at the time. no one survived. and the police commissioner said the plane suffered catastrophic engine failure, but investigators say it's too early

to speculate on the cause of the crash. the local media reported the pilot was an experienced aviator in his 60s. and the national weather service confirmed six tornadoes touched down in the san antonio area late sunday and early yesterday. luckily, no major injuries were reported, but officials estimate at least 150 homes and other structures were damaged. according to "the houston chronicle," last night 3600 customers were without electricity in the san antonio area. and at the height of the storm, about 46,000 were reportedly without power. the local you till till company says two transmission towers were destroyed in the storm. we'll get a check on the weather now with nbc meteorologist bob kn -- bonnie snyder. >> the storms in texas are working their way further to the east, so rain in new orleans, mississippi and alabama, and especially to the panhandle of florida. take a look at the computer

projection. heavy rain is expected in the region right along the alabama/florida border. scattered storms as well. some could be severe with strong winds, so watch out for the potential of a power outage or two heading into the afternoon hours. in the meantime, we take a look at what is happening in terms of how much rain we'll accumulate. two inches in isolated areas along the florida panhandle. and in birmingham, lighter amounts, possibly a half in. . more scattered showers for california. even though the heaviest rain is not going to hit in california, we still have flood advisories in the sacramento area. some warnings as well out in san francisco. heavier rain towards oregon today. more scattered in the amount of intensity, but keep in mind in the sierra foothills we'll look for the potential for heavier rain, lighter rain. a dryer pattern will emerge toward the middle of the week. that's food news after all the rain we saw yesterday. we had incredible winds over 70 miles per hour in monterey, california, yesterday. as for across the country, it's really the news of how warm it

morning. general mcmaster is going to be replacing general flynn as national security adviser. he holds a ph.d. in military history. he commanded the regiment that retook kandahar in 2005. and the bambassador in russa died unexpectedly yesterday after collapsing at his desk at the united nations. the cause of death is unknown, but the officials say there's no foul play. and a levee breaks from yet another storm. this time it's the san joaquin river. the leak has been temporarily repaired but the evacuation order remains in effect. a flash flood warning was also issued. vice president mike pence is back following an overseas trip

2015. president trump is likely to reject options to charge companies a higher rate and begin leasing without preconditions. and they will also seek to reverse a rule that prompts powerful methane emissions on federal lands. there's new pressure on the president to address the rise in anti-semitism acts following this attack at a missouri -- >> reporter: last month staff and parents hurried children to safety. some babies wheeled away in cribs. 11 jewish centers received similar calls. since early january, 54 centers have been targeted across the states. all appear to have been hoaxes.

washington. all right. joining us now from capitol hill, jonathan swan, a good morning to you. i want to get your quick reaction to this debate that is now taking place around whether the president is condemning these acts enough, and some comments that come out from ivanka trump on this subject. >> this is one of those strangest incidents that has sort of come up with donald trump. he's spent his entire business career in very close relationships to jewish leaders, he's got very strong allies in the republican jewish community. and that moment in the press conference was just bizarre because this jewish journalist gave him the perfect set-up to just make a very easy denouncement. actually, it was a softball question, but trump personalized it to make it about him. and his daughter ivanka had to play clean-up. she tweeted the houses of worship need to be protected. so it was just a very, very

confounding situation and shows that sometimes his paranoia and sort of animosity toward the press can actually backfire. >> jonathan, i want to switch gears here to talk about the tent pole event for conservatives, cpac. every year cnbc and senate republicans, it can bring about make or break moments for senators, but this year it seems to be about the controversy of milo being out. talk about this. >> so milo is a controversial figure on the right. cpac put themselves in a difficult position because they wanted to have his speech be all about college campuses. of course, he's been going around college campuses to great acclaim and there were huge protests at berkeley with fires and that sort of mat martyred

him to some extent on the right. but the comments of a 13-year-old and a man -- the thing people don't understand about breitbart and milo, and i have been immersed in this field for a while, he's got less support at breitbart than people assume. a lot of folks can't stand him. they think he's more trouble than he's worth. that's not just junior people, that's senior people. milo is not a universally beloved figure even in that world. and there's a lot of people who think he's not really actually conservative. he's more just a provocative, very self-indulgent -- >> it was all from the guys who wanted free speech, right and that's why they wanted him to have a platform. >> right. specifically free speech on college campuses, a huge issue on the right. then they got themselves into the situation, and the board has

a lot of icons of conservatism in america was clearly not going to accept this. >> and let me ask you quickly about the president, i know he's expected to speak there on friday, it's kind of in some ways very informal state of the union just after a month in office. yesterday the white house put out their list of accomplishments in the first 30 days or so. do we expect that to be the theme on friday? or something different? >> look, cpac, for anyone who has been there, you need to throw a lot of red meat to the crowd. there could be some moments of, look, here's what we have done. but he needs to throw red meat. and donald trump knows how to throw red meat to a cpac crowd. >> jonathan, thank you for that. the fight overseas continues with new video showing the moment kim jong-un's brother was allegedly attacked. it shows a person coming up

headquartered. guys, back to you. >> louisa bojesen, thank you so much. now we'll go to bonnie schneider where we are looking south at the storms. >> we have storms rolling into eastern louisiana. the eastern parishes are getting hit by rain hard, then it moves through southern sections of mississippi and alabama. here's a look at the projection of the rain we can see and where it is headed. the gulf storms work their way all the way across the gulf of mexico and we'll start to see more stormy weather in florida by the time we get to wednesday. keep that in mind while traveling. heavy amounts of rain, destin, pensacola, we will likely see it accumulate through the middle of the week. as we look to the west, less rain hitting northern california, but the threat remains for flooding. we can see a lot of the rain pushing further to the north near oregon. heavy downpours in oregon at this hour. but unfortunately because we have been seeing so much rain, we still have a flood threat. it will take a while for waters to recede. the threat today is for heavy

all right, i want to bring you tragic news from the libyan coast where it is reported 74 bodice of migrants have washed ashore. the red crescent told the associated press, the bodies washed ashore in the western city of zawi. while the reason for the drownings is not clear, the migrants' vessel was reported to have sunk with several aboard. it gives you a sense how dire the conditions are. and we turn to one of the

top stories, the melbourne, australia, plane that crashed. >> the plane crashed into the shopping mall after leaving the runway shortly after takeoff. lucy cavanaugh, good day to you. what else are authorities saying what may have caused this plane to crash? >> reporter: well, good morning. police say that the pilot reported a catastrophic engine failure just moments before this crash. but it is still too soon to say definitively what exactly happened. this was supposed to be a dream golfing vacation for four american tourists. they had chartered a plane, a twin engine supper king air to take them from melbourne to 160 miles south. they were just taking off 9:00 a.m. local time when the plane crashed into a shopping center at the end of the airport runway. witnesses described a horrific scene. the plane exploding on impact, erupting into a massive fireball. and you can see the footage from

before we toss it over to "morning joe," we'll check on the stories in the day ahead. >> kelly o'donnell reports. >> reporter: president trump back in washington with one of the big items checked off his to-do list. he has named h.r. mcmaster as national security adviser, and the president has been clear that mcmaster will have the full authority to set up the national security council and his staff the way he sees fit. that has been an issue of controversy with some of the other people considered for that position. in the week ahead, we expect there to be big developments on crucial priorities for the president. the revised travel ban affecting the seven muslim countries with restrictions on how people can come into the u.s.
