4:01 pm
calling them rapist. trump appeal has triggered new level on the right. according the law center it's giving strength and confidence including -- has brought the issue of hate and extremism to the head front. vandals who gained access to the cemetery local police says 200 headstones were damaged over the weekend. on monday centers across the country received bomb threats that have. reacting last night ivanka trump, speak out on twitterer. america is a nation built on principles of tolerance.
4:02 pm
we must protect other centers of worship. president trump condemned it. >> i think it's terrible. i think it's horrible. whether it's anti-semitism or racism or anything you want to think about having to do with the divide, anti-semitism is like wise, terrible. and you don't know where it's coming from but i hope they camp the people. i think you may have had it for longer than people think and maybe it gets brought up more, but ill will tell you anti-semitism is horrible. >> you're denouncing it once and for all. >> of course. >> vandalism is -- the law center produ a report this month notin the correlation
4:03 pm
between election and uptick of hate. after the less or hate incidents swept the country. 1,094 in the last 34 days. it's tied to trump's victory. the numbers di minutishing after that. his slogan or remarks about grabbing women. i'm joined by mark. what is a correlation, is it cause abilit causeality. what can you find in the data. >> one we know it was related to the election because it was a huge outburst of the incident starting immediately after the election. and two, in analyzing we found 35% of the perpetrators saying
4:04 pm
something like yelling to a women you go back to your country now donald trump is president. that kind of thing or to make america great slogan or grabbing women comment. i think what's happened, it wasn't particularly only anti-semitic attacks we saw. it was something to see. >> shortly after the election donald trump was asked on 60 minutes to responds here is exchan. >> i don't hear it. >> you're not seeing it. >> i saw one or to instance. >> do you want to say anything to those people. >> don't do it. that's terrible. because i'm going to bring this country together. >> they are harassing latinos, muslims. >> i'm sadden to hear that. and i say stop it.
4:05 pm
if it helps. i'll say this stop it. >> you're a expert on the hate groups. trump is not anti-semitic. he has been to the right in terms of israeli, to the right in terms of supporting his settlement and one-state thing he pulling it. how do you figure him out or is he in the right ring coalition which includes bad characters? >> the comments today that and 50 cents will buy you a cup of coffee.
4:06 pm
donald trump has playing a game of footcy with the extreme right. le backed away from david duke claiming he didn't know what he was. and that was false. and a number of ways voided until the last moment, until he backed into corner making these kinds of statements. do i believe donald trump is personally anti-sematic, it hardly matters. the fact is, is when he makes these comments, when he attacks immigrants in general, latinos in particular, he gives permission to people out there to act in this way. so you know, no, certainly he has done some anti-semitic
4:07 pm
things in the past. it's hard to forget him tweeting a star of david with a picture of hillary clinton and piles of money. later claiming this was a sheriff star -- >> i forgot that. that was a problem. you're right. >> there's a series of these. he is not trying to attack jews, he trying to avoid offending anti-semite who support them. and there are a lot of them. >> as mark said about incidents like those. here how president respond to the rise of threats into the jewish center in press conference last ek. >> there have been report out that 48 bomb threats have been made against jewish centers across the country in the last couple of weeks.
4:08 pm
there are people threatenning to -- >> he said he was going to ask a simple easy question and it's not. i understand the rest of the question. here the story, number one, i am the least anti-sematic person you have ever seen in your entire life. >> a series of that threat reporters state of connecticut last month. i'm joined by senator. thank you for joining us. what do you make of that pattern, its correlation, the causeality, apparently some people do that very thing. they identify themselves with the slogan of this president and the characteristics of this campaign. >> his silence has spoken volumes until today. yesterday's statement was weak. his response that he played to
4:09 pm
that reporter at the press conference failure to mention jews in the holocaust statement and given listen to the white nationalist who have supported him like steve bannon. we need reted and action dicting his attorney general to ap henned and persecute the people behind the threat. >> that inspired by politician. i was smierinspired in the last campaign going back to '08 when that woman said she was iraq. he said no he is a good
4:10 pm
american. do you think trump should do something like that once in a while to stand up for the right or the good. >> that's exactly the kind of leadership that's been lacking. john mccain standing up to that statement took courage and gutsy. that's kind of leadership that would quail and put to rest a lot of the doubts about president trump motives or views on this issue. moreover increasing the strength. i'm proposing legislation to -- private right of action, private ability to sue perpetrates. this kind of action speaks louder than words. >> i think it take a sick mind to go after the cemetery, there's nothing there except the ha
4:11 pm
ha hell you want to raise against the people's family. >> it's against muslim, against the weak, and sometimes disabled and the actions of now president trump during his campaign gave license to that kind of malicious instincts. a dispickble kind of instinct on the kind of people. >> thank you. joining me now heidi, as well -- this is tough one. we tried to get along. when someone goes to a graveyard say something is going wrong here. >> it puts a -- white wing
4:12 pm
fridge alt-right -- they have asking him as leader -- >> he took it that way. >> what is your response to this as president trump because the numbers don't like. there's been a spike. believe the fbi because they have numbers too. >> i believe back in the '60s he had people riding around with rebel license plates to make the point they were with him the wrong way. >> donald trump should do with senator blumenthal said, not only condemn but them prosecute them. >> i spend day arguing with the
4:13 pm
producer. >> right. he has a long history of not been anti-semitic. >> he played the racial card with the birther thing. he has been playing the cards on the right. >> american campaign slogan which people point out -- history of that -- here is the critical ings, it's not just this fridge group going mainstream, it's there's been several incidents of that. richard did the hail trump at ball room. it wasn't until "new york times" pushed him to denounce that. >> he plays the -- >> he played some cards to help get him to the white house.
4:14 pm
if he wants to bring the people together, he has to -- i done thi don't think -- >> i remember thinking this campaign was so ugly, he has to give an address to -- >> by the way, he wasn't against them, right. i'll say it. in his press briefing sean spicer said no matter what the president does his critics will say it's not enough. let's watch. >> he has been for the forceful with his denounceuation of people who seek to attack people because of their hate -- because of religion or gender or color of their skin. it's ironic that no matter how
4:15 pm
many times you talks about it it's never good enough. >> what do you think saying he is victim. sean is working for the guy. he believes he has been set upon. >> i believe trump made mistakes. a lot of these attacks are wrong ask political. unfortunately, for sean, what else is he going to say. donald trump can make as many speeches he want they are going to make accusation against him. because that's what politicians do. >> i think that's the case here, it's forced. >> by the way, we can talk about this for hours. i did get a couple of anti-semitic calls. i got a couple of calls who
4:16 pm
makes anti-sematic crap where you work, is there something going on in the zeitgeist. there's problem. >> i think that senator blumenthal has a point, prosecute some of the knuckle heads. >> heidi, thank you. a lot of come down to relationships with people who live together. thank you. coming up, controversial milo yiannopoulos resigns after getting banned from the speaking engagement. he not going to make it. plus the russian are coming, they are contradicting president trump.
4:17 pm
he did have contact with them during the campaign. who are you going to believe. the president promises to heal the country. he want to bring people together. let finish with trump watch. this is "hardball" where the action is. my business was built with passion... but i keep it growing by making every dollar count. that's why i have the spark cash card from capital one. with it, i earn unlimited 2% cash back on
4:18 pm
all of my purchasing. and that unlimited 2% cash back from spark means thousands of dollars each year going back into my business... which adds fuel to my bottom line. what's in your wallet? members of congress are back home and facing protests at town hall -- kt kentucky late today president trump tweeted about it. hometowns of rep republicans are planned out by liberal activists. sad. we'll be back after this. need . the password that i use? yes, sir, your password. there's been another breach! sir! right. okay.

4:21 pm
if you're a conservative i'm a liberal. >> you work for breitbart and you're a trump supporter. >> it's interesting that the radical editorials are saying things about gays are being published by breitbart. >> that was milo yiannopoulos with bill maher. annual hearing in washington. they withdrew the invitation after the group called reagan pa balae posted clips in which adults and ask young teenagers. max our friend, which hosts explain decision to bump him.
4:22 pm
>> we are okay with having controversy on stage with cpac. sign i have been chairman we take the -- there are boundaries and over the weekend i was made aware of these comments and it broke through very important boundary and we felt like the cpac stage was not appropriate place for this any longer. >> it wasn't only blow out. they cancelled his book schedule to release in june. here he is. >> i have reviewed the tapes that appeared a few days ago. and i don't believe they say what is being reported. i believe british sarcasm might have come across at flippant.
4:23 pm
advocacy. i'm horrified by that statement. i would like to adult who abuse minors. >> the initial cpac created uproar in a post they slamed decision writing the editor said he is not conservative. his stack is about political correctness. milo yiannopoulos fits the bill. he is on the american board members, one of the sponsored. the alt-right has no place inside of the movement. joining me now, thank you both. is this weeding out process that's begun on the harright
4:24 pm
pulling out people like yiannopoulos. >> first of all -- >> don't hold your tongue. >> we have to take a stance to say alt-right is not part of the movement. we. >> who is out who is in. >> alt-right is not part of the movement. so i have very strong -- >> that's start with -- george will is a conservative. >> right. >> pat bu cannan. >> who is out besides this guy. >> when you -- that's not -- >> give employee some some name. >> right now milo being uninvieted. i was happy it was rescinded.

4:26 pm
>> i think they made a mistake. they corrected the mistake. >> so bannon is okay with you. >> i hope so. >> i think a lot of what you're getting at has to do - whenou ask who is the alt-right. it's not the who, it's the philosophy. it goes to something i had to deal with as chairman and the party has to deal with, a full throated definition of who we are -- >> it's no good for this yiannopoulos. what's the difference between the two. >> i want to go to what michael was talking about. i think we're in an interesting era of what do we believe, what would we accept, what should we reject. you're going to see something of a rigorous debate. what does it look like.
4:27 pm
>> as you saw with tea part, everybody has own -- when they have own things. that's what the alt-right have done. they have glomed on to the conservative mantle -- >> no. andrew so laft loft, they start something called big jerusalem advocated state of israel, i found that to be -- >> invitation to controversial editor where republican party is headed. "the washington post" wrote, playing nice a friend of the mainstream media. it's a long-standing middle finger to the establishment.
4:28 pm
yiannopoulos fits the mold. he told him and president were testament to this. >> this is anti-political correctness pro-speech revolution happening all over the world is not going anywhere. right wing politician have run terrified screaming. that's changing with the rise of bold electorates and bold politicians. i'm example of that social change. >> he is in trouble. he dials it back. he gets the suit, the glasses, the whole thing, as opposed to the behavior we saw on bill
4:29 pm
mahe, are. here is the problem. cpac has to be careful in terms of how they extend invitations. you created this confusion within the ranks of conservatives that we are embracing and normalizing someone outside of the mainstream. >> i think you do like everybody, like bill maher, you put on someone who gets attention. >> i'm sure having the vice president and president is going to be a good show. >> you don't think they had to go wild. >> no, i don't. >> the vice president -- >> that makes no sense. >> when he say he is in -- >> defend -- first of all, trump
4:30 pm
rejected the -- he is not in lockstep with them. he is a fellow traveller of the alt-right. >> you're saying trump never played to the hard right with birtherism, saying the president of the united states illegally president under assumed name. you don't think that's hard right? >> a statement that the president obama was not american, that's not a joke. >> we have to be part of the -- not to distract from the message -- >> trump put the whistle out there. he said mexicans -- he said we have a problem with immigration. you don't call them rapist. you don't accuse muslims of
4:31 pm
being terrorist or the first african-american president of being an immigrant. you don't think that's playing to the hard right or do you think he believes this crap? i think he plays to the hard right. >> here is my thing to where -- >> can you answer the question, please. answer one question. >> no, with the conservative moment we don't need to play footsie with this. >> that's -- >> this is when i'm concerned about. >> thank you for being on the board. michael steel, thank you. new reporting from the "new york times." connections with the russians he has them. this is "hardball" where the

welcome back to "hardball." last week president trump innist issed again that he neither his aide had contact with russian officials during the 2016 campaign. the "new york times" write the denial stands with russian official had contact with aides with mr. trump before the

election. he referring to the deputy foreign minister. there were contacts between russian and trump's immediate interrange during the campaign. trump's spokesperson denied contact between russian officials prior to the election. he had communicated with michael flynn by person but declined to so who are we to believe the president trump of the united states or the russians. jeremy, i like this story, they have talked about a long series of conversations whatever it is, and the russians. trump offers this blank denials covered with caveats.
4:37 pm
according this. what's up? what can we deduce from reporting of your newspaper and trump's denials. >> there were contact between campaign and the russian government. what's odd if they didn't really communicate i feel like we would know that. it's one of these things where trump where you're in the this strange position do we question do we believe the russians more than we believe our president. it's odd how the white house is. >> there was hand holding on both sides. it would be nice to trump by leaking everything to the democratic commission. that would be a worst-case.
4:38 pm
if it's true. the other possibility is these were casual conversations, old friend, but the russians are saying there were contacts. >> that would be fine and that would be perfectly legitimate conversation, if trump had not say hey, russian, hack hillary's e-mails. we know manafort have contact. >> how did manafort get -- >> was it through russia. >> yes. he has a place in new york. >> manaforted worked in maybe that's how if he did get involved they were clients over there, right? >> trump and paul manafort go back 20 years.
