door-to-door to help those stranded. good morning, everyone. it is wednesday, february 2nd. i'm alex witt alongside ayman mohyeldin and louis burgdorf. immigration is the new focus of the secretary of homeland security. following through on the border wall and citing the end of catch and release, the immediate deportation for those in the u.s. under 2 years, that's a change from obama, send central american refugees to mexico, and prosecute those who are smuggling their children into

the u.s. also dhs will add 5,000 more border patrol agents and add 10,000 more i.c.e. agents while ramping up the 287g program to recruit local help. this is enforcement of existing policy says the white house. >> is one of the goals here mass deportation? >> no. the message from this white house and from the dhs is that those people who are in this country impose a threat to our public safety or who committed a crime will be the first to go. and we'll be aggressively making sure that occurs. remember, everyone who is here illegally is subject to removal at any time. that is consistent with every countrot just ours. if you're in this country in an illegal manner, then obviously there's a provision that can ensure you'll be removed. >> there's push-back in chicago where the public school system instructed principals not to allow i.c.e. agents into the

classroom without criminal warrants. but so far dhs canceled all obama-era executive orders except the one issued in 2012 to allow those who came to america as children to stay here. yesterday the president told craig melvin the u.s. showed compassion for the approximate 750,000 dreamers raised in the united states. >> what about the dreamers? >> we are going to try to take care of the dreamers. >> homeland security also addressed the border identifying three cites where it plans to construct the wall. funding will come from congress and include the cost of $20 billion even before maintenance is factored in. president trump is facing criticism for not speaking out enough about anti-semitism.

following a tour of the african-american museum of agriculture. >> this tour was a meaningful reminder of why we have to fight bigotry, intolerance in all its ugly forms. the anti-semitic threats are horrible and painful and a very sad reminder of the work that still must be done to root out hate and prejudice and evil. >> will you denounce anti-semitism once and for all to clear up the confusion? >> i do all the time. i think it is terrible, i think it is horrible. whether it is anti-semitism or racism, anything you want to think about having to do with the divide.

"no ban no wall." mitch mcconnell took our call as he arrived. while respecting those protesting, he said winners make policy and the losers go home. >> this congress for 240 years has been an open country where you can express your points of view. as long as you do it peacefully. we're proud of that. so i'm proud of those folks out there. they don't like what i'm doing. they don't share my agenda. but i respect their right to be there. why are they protesting? they don't like the result of change. they had their shot in the election, they certainly had their shot in kentucky. but in this country, when you win the election, you get to make the policy. i always remind people, winners make policy and losers go home.

those though evacuate the dakota access pipeline protest camp. here's more from the camp site with a good morning to you, cal perry. >> reporter: deadline day here. 2:00 p.m. local time is when the army corps of engineers wants everybody off that piece of land that is close to both the reservation and the pipeline being put in by energy partners. there are concerns about the camp, for one, there are mental health issues some have in this camp, which is why authorities are setting up a processing center here in the capital. there's also a sanitary concern, trash has been piled high in that camp. they have been trying to clear out the site for weeks now, but it's getting more and more difficult as water rises. keep in mind, this is why the governor put in that evacuation order according to the governor. this camp lies below a potential floodplain. that's a concern to authorities. and there's the concern there could be violence. there's a small group of

protesters that are holed up inside the standing rock camp who have vowed to stay past the deadline. the deadline of 2 p.m. where authorities say the protesters have a choice, they can leave peace any on their own and processed out here of the center and given bus tickets home. or they can be arrested at 2:00 p.m. that's when we expect to see the national guard start heading towards the camp. ayman? >> cal perry, thank you for that report. the new video has been released of actor harrison ford's close call with an american airlines jet while landing his plane at a southern california airport last week. the 74-year-old was coming in for a landing at the john wayne airport when he mistakingly landed on a taxiway just flying over the jet holding position for departure with more than 100 people on board. the faa has told nbc news that ford who is an experienced pilot had been instructed to land on the airport's runway and that he read the instructions back to officials. the faa's investigating the incident and there's no comment

yet from ford. all right, d.c. police have released dramatic body cam video of a man being rescued from a burning car. officials say he somehow ran his vehicle off the road into a light pole on monday night. you can see the car smoking as the officer approaches. here's what happens next. >> i'm going to break the window right now. >> can you open the door? open the door. get your seat belt off. >> yes, sir. >> he's coming! he's coming! >> dramatic video of a close call there. you can see the officers eventually pulled the driver to safety. metro police say he's been treated and released from the hospital. no word yet on what caused him to run off the road, guys. >> oh, man. >> wow. >> too scary. luckily for both of them, harrison ford as well as that man there in the burning car. >> thank you, louis, for that. still ahead, the banner may be gone now but the national

welcome back. this morning national park police are investigating how people were able to hang a banner reading refugees welcome on the be of e statue of liberty. according to the lease, the banner was just unfurled before 1:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon. rangers took it down an hour later. that banner on the national monument is prohibited. the investigation is underway to identify the people who hung that sign. meanwhile, u.s. park officials are also investigating

vandalism at four memorials in washington, d.c. the world war ii memorial, lincoln memorial, washington monument and d.c. war memorial were all vandalized with permanent marker over the holiday weekend. crews are using solvent to remove the graffiti. investigators are reviewing surveillance camera footage from the areas. in san jose, california, more than 240 people had to be rescued because of rising floodwaters. in fact, the city declared a local emergency and issued evacuation orders or advisories for 1,000 homes. the floodwaters are tall enough to cover cars forcing rescuers to go door-to-door to search for residents. fire crews are decontaminating anyone who comes into contact with floodwater which has been polluted with both gasoline, oil, sewage, chemicals and other debris. according to the weather channel, there's been eight weather-related deaths as a result of the most drent storms in california. let's bring in bonnie schneider

with the latest. today's forecast should be dr the problem is we have seen so much rain, five inches for this month along, more than twice we would normally see for the month of february. let's look at the forecast for california and the rest of the west coast. light showers with additional snow in high elevations. i hate to say we have another storm in the forecast because we certainly don't need more rain there. but we are dealing with precipitation working into tampa bay right now. in terms of accumulation, it's going to be stormy. low pressure working its way across parts of the gulf of mexico. kind of unusual to see that this time of the year, but the low will trigger instability and more likely storms will build in with heavy rain and the threat of isolated flooding. so if you live in an area that tends to flood when the rain comes down really hard in florida, you may be seeing it from jacksonville down to miami. so accumulations will be fairly

johnson has wasted no time in his new role. they agreed to trade lou williams to the houston rockets in exchange for corey brewer in a first-round draft pick. a big shake-up there. and to major league baseball where an effort to speed up the game's pace of play, the league approved a rule to allow automatic intentional walk that is will take effect in the upcoming season. we'll see what barnacle has to say about this. rather than throwing four pitches wide of the strike zone, the rule allows for a dugout signal to indicate an intentional walk. there were 932 intentional walks last season. let's see if this really has any effect on the game's pace. the patriots quarterback tom brady, super bowl li jersey is still missing, big shocker there, but the amount has been attached to the memorabilia. the stolen item is listed as worth $500,000. the value makes the crime a first-degree felony under texas law. i don't know if we'll see that one. and finally in college

yesterday telling msnbc these kinds of actions have to stop. the president has faced criticism for not going far enough in speaking out. today is the day protesters against the dakota access peopleline have to leave their encampment. the army corps of engineers plans to shut it down today. a few hundred people are still at the protest camp. and house speaker paul ryan is expected to tour the u.s. border with mexico for the first time today. he'll need a small delegation of republicans to include the chairman of the homeland security committee, michael mccaul. the trump administration is trying to calm fears over the sweeping new immigration directives insisting the goal of the ramped up enforcement is not to produce mass deportation. also interesting is a particular segment of the undocumented community that the president spared. msnbc news justice correspondent pete williams. >> reporter: i'm with the homeland security ordering new

immigration laws on the books to carry out donald trump's executive orders signed last month. nearly anyone here illegally is now subject to deportation. so when undocumented migrants are picked up by police for any violation and their fingerprints are sent to homeland security, they could be deported. the memos call for hiring 5,000 more border patrol agents and 10,000 more i.c.e. agents. people detained at the border will now be held until their court hearings. no longer released and allowed to show up later. the rules call for immediate deportation without a hearing for anyone picked up who has been here illegally less than two years. and it used to be two weeks. but notably unchanged is president obama's executive order allowing so-called dreamers to stay. children who came here illegally with their parents. now most of this will take months, even years to fully enforce, and homeland firms don't plan any mass round-ups. >> pete williams in washington, thank you for that. packed town halls continue to pop up across the country.

night of large crowds getting an earful while answering more than 25 questions from a crowd of 800 people. >> roughly 800 people packed into the york high school auditorium that holds 1,000. some constituents waitehree hours outside to get that seat at the table. >> people are scared. >> a lot of unusual activity going on in washington. >> on donald trump, taylor reiterated he should release his tax returns. he also called on the nation to unite. >> i think that, you know, the country does have to get calm. the president himself also has to get calm and reduce those tweeting and reduce tensions around the nation. >> and farther south it was a similar scene. overflow crowds chanted "you work for us" as buddy carter spoke at a college cam pause in savannah, georgia. inside he tried to reassure to the crowd he doesn't plan to pull out the rug from anyone on

obamacare. and carter exited through a side door over security concerns. quote, i regret that. i was really happy about the turnout. everyone has the right to speak and i want to give them that right. i wish we could have been more cordial. and then there was this moment with congressman steve womack in arkansas. >> you guys just want to investigate everybody. and you guys wasted a lot of money on benghazi, waste a little on trump. >> joining me from capitol hill is molly hooper. molly, good morning to you. what a divide over the town hall crowds. put this moment in context for us, how contentious is this at its roots? >> reporter: you know, it seems very contentious. in 2009, after the tea party

movement really started to pick up steam, we would see these ruccous town hall meetings over the issue of obamacare. at that time, it was not a reality but just something that the congress was talking about. and climate change legislation, the efforts seemed to be very organic, not organized. people weren't speaking over each other as much. they were yelling very -- it was very heated but in a different kind of way. it seems like these town halls and the passion that is being seen is something that is coming out of this previous election. this country is very divided. and that was quite clear in the past year and a half. and this is just sort of an outcropping of that. and it is just a continuation over the poll already aization of this country it seems. >> molly, i want to switch topics to ask you about immigration, the announcement of the executive orders expanding some of the powers that

officials will have enforcing the laws. do you expect that to also be a high issue for congestiressiona representatives when they get back to their districts in the crowds? or is this an issue on obamacare? >> reporter: i believe immigration is one of the issues as well. for immigration, it depends more so on where the congressman's district is. i know, for example, dennis ross, a congressman in florida, had very passionate questions about the issue of carrying out the immigration orders. and the republicans like to say, this is not necessarily branching the federal government more authority, it's more so spilling out what these agents need to be enforcing. under the obama administration, the dhs chose to not enforce certain aspects of the law as str str

strictly. and basically the trump administration is saying, no, we're going to enforce the laws and hire more border security and more dhs officials and more judges for the immigration courts. and we're going to carry the laws out to the letter. so, you know, there's a question in how you really articulate that. but in districts in california, florida, manufacturing areas, these are very key issues to the people who live in those districts. >> molly hooper, great to have you with us this early morning. appreciate it. the controversial writer who was booted from cpac earlier this week resigned from his role. the senior editor at breitbart news is said to be a distraction. milo yiannopoulos was given an invitation and then a dis-invitation from simon &

going what he's doing just not under breitbart. and it seems that the president's chief strategist had a different message for one european leader. according to reuters, steve bannon questioned the effectiveness of the european union. bannon told the ambassador he viewed the eu as a flawed construct and favored conducting relations with europe on a bilateral basis. one source told reuters, quote, there appears to be no understanding in the white house of an unraveling of the eu and it would have grave consequences. the white house disputed the characterization calling it a quick hello while the german govern declined to comment. still ahead, walmart drives another ll street record high. that's coming up in business. plus, evacuation orders are still in place in california after another round of storms. teens are going door to door to rescue residents. we'll have the very latest on that.

there's a new storm system saturday night into sunday, but for now we are looking at light showers with onshore flow. look at this, snow in the forecast. and then we forgot about snow, i know it's still winter, but a big storm is coming through the northern and central plains and into the midwest. minneapolis, you could see a foot of snow thursday night into friday. we'll break it down because one storm will affect many people. heavy snow in the plains and midwest. and thunderstorms, remember temperatures are too warm in chicago for this to be a big snow event there, but it will be a stormy one. storms in indianalis all the way to western pennsylvania as the rain moves to the east. you may see a little bit of lights snow as it starts off in chicago. and then as we head into the weekend, we'll look outfor wet weather into boston and new york for saturday night. look at the widespread warmth. unbelievable. temperatures are soaring so high that much of the country, 71%, 50 degrees or warmer. that is really unheard of for february. as we look at the temperatures, another day where we have numbers 30 degrees above normal with more records likely to be shattered once again. 68 in chicago.

64 in cleveland. nashville, up to 73. by thursday, 64 in new york city. and in the upper 70s in raleigh. that's getting close to 80 degrees in north carolina. it will be 81 in jackson, mississippi, which is more than 20 degrees above normal. by the time we kind of wrap up this week, it looks like we'll get warmer. washington, d.c., 30 degrees above normal with a high temperature of 74. and into cleveland, 35 degrees above normal. so some really warm numbers for you. so keep that in mind. and also, just, of course, we are still watching california. we'll be watched for the scattered showers. but again, it's going to take a while for the water to recede. in fact, the national weather service for the san jose area says it will take 24 hours to get below flood stage. so something to keep in mind. >> i have whiplash with this winter. you don't know if you're coming or going. thank you for the heads-up on all that. still ahead for all of you, the latest on the bizarre death surrounding kim jong-un's half brother.
