just spending time with the family. >> i'm just going to play over there, okay? >> have fun. >> most of my holiday consisted of checking out the scenery. the coral reefs. i had never seen crystal clear water like that before. eating was a big part of our vacation. >> tell me if you like it. >> we were going to fly out the following day. i was looking forward to going home to see my father. i hadn't seen him in two weeks. by then, the holiday, i felt like i had accomplished a wonderful trip. >> i woke up, 2:30 a.m.

the whole place is so quiet. you can see the moon, so bright. it was full of stars. i heard something, fast-moving, footsteps, running. i saw two guys. one looked like he had some kind of rifle. at first i thought some kind of robbery. so i screamed for help. the mangroves." >> there was no sign of my family. not kids, nothing. did they do something with my family already? >> run! ♪ >> i was lights being flashed around. i saw someone close to the shore. we are now surrounded by several men with heavy assault rifles. i couldn't think straight. i was terrified. >> someone kicked kevin from behind. this man grabbed my hair. >> what's your name? >> scream at me.

>> what's your name! >> he pulled my hair back and shined this light into my eyes. >> what's your name? >> kevin. >> what kevin? >> kevin. >> they were saying something to each other, "it's them, it's them." it's like, this must be some kind of mistake. there is no reason for them to come after us. >> go! >> they pushed us towards this boat that was waiting on the shore of the beach. ♪

our journey in the boat lasted around three hours. i tried to stay strong but i didn't want to make it to our destination. i didn't know what awaited us there. >> i was thinking, just jump out of the boat and just run. but there were so many of them. >> the age range could have been from around 15 to almost 40. i was shocked. how could people who looked close to my own age have a military grade assault rifle? >> sit there.

at this point we weren't told where we were going. i imagined someplace far from civilization where nobody would find us. >> then suddenly from the distance, i saw a light. >> i could hear a car in the distance.

we passed also an area that looked like a makeshift kitchen. i wasn't sure to think, is this a village, some type of military outpost? and then i saw a group of men waiting there. most wearing camo type outfits. there was also a man sitting there. he struck me as someone who could have been in charge. >> go. >> he pointed toward what looked

like a cage to me. >> i did not want to go in. >> the cage itself was very small. if i was to stand inside it, my head would stick out of it. >> what went across my mind was kevin. i told him how beautiful the philippines is, how nice the people are. and for him to be treated like that, how can these people do this to us? ♪

>> i don't know what time we woke up. when i opened my eyes, i see just branches and branches. there is no roof. i realized, why am i sleeping outdoors? the reality hit me. i wasn't dreaming. we were taken. we were kidnapped. >> the man that we thought could have been the chief strided towards us. i would have loved to yell at them and say everything you're doing is wrong. but i couldn't do that.

and the ransom was not paid. and now they're going to take me. and i'm never going to see kevin again. and i prepared him. >> if i don't come back, i want you to escape. you've got to get home to your dad. you have to. >> it's about him now. he needs to get away. >> i love you. >> let's go! >> this was goodbye. it made me feel empty. what did i have left? i tried to look up and see if i could see anybody in the tower. but i couldn't see inside. i thought if i went to go wash my clothes, that i could see the area around there, if there were any people around. i couldn't hear any other movement around the house. i couldn't see anybody in the distance. and from every direction, i couldn't see a single person. as i returned to my room, i realized this was it. i picked my backpack up. i noticed a knife. i placed it into my backpack.

i was terrified the whole time that somebody would walk up on me and catch me in the act. i could still hear sawing and hammering. ♪ >> i ran with everything i had. i stopped in the creek. i still heard hammering and i still heard sawing. whoever was up there hadn't realized that i got down, all the way down here.

♪ my goal was to get somewhere close to the ocean, hopefully from the ocean i could reach a major city. after cutting through different brush for almost an hour, i heard something like a bird. it was a noise i had heard the terrorists make when they were signaling one another. they had found out that i had escaped. from that moment i didn't stop. a search party would soon be happening.

had, like, philippine military on it. it was at this moment i could breathe for a second. he wasn't lying. i saw this woman, she was smiling. >> welcome. what is your name? >> kevin lunsman. >> welcome, kevin lunsman. >> i knew that i was safe. >> follow me. >> finally i was going to be able to go home was incredible. i couldn't comprehend the feeling of the joy. but there was still the weary
