the political showdown over president trump's nominee is set to take center stage in washington beginning today as democrats look to block the confirmation of kneneil gorsucn despite the threat they say gorsuch will be the next justice. nbc kelly o'donnell has more. >> reporter: not every capitol hill showdown carries the weight of history. >> judge gorsuch has outstanding legal skills. >> reporter: this time, it does. >> i'm honored and i'm humbled. >> reporter: 49-year-old colorado based federal judge neil gorsuch could begin a lifetime appointment to the supreme court by friday. >> neil gorsuch will be confirmed this week. how that happened really depends on democratic parameter. >> reporter: that's where more history comes in. supreme court nominee has never been blocked by a partisan filibuster. democratic wills try to stop gorsuch by insisting on senate's rule requiring 60 votes. >> it's highly, highly unlikely

u.s. official confirmed to nbc news. traveling with joint chief of staff. official says kushner was invited by the general. purpose of unannounced visit is unclear at this time. president has turned to kushner for various policy issues including piece between israel and palestinians. trip comes as accepteding 275 more soldiers to iraq. the congressional intelligence committee said they are not at the stage to consider granting former national security adviser michael flynn immunity. tells nbc news, it's discussion with flynn's lawyer did not include immunity. sources close to senate saying immunity is not on the table at this time. spou sean spicer said he spoke with the president about his tweet saying flynn should ask for immunity not saying he was suggesting flynn should receive it. >> the president is clear he

welcome back. let's gets your check on weather. a lot of danger out there still. >> still going to continue today. yesterday morning had fatal tornado with mother and daughter in trailer. after that, we had high risk of severe storms. very scared now. louisiana and a couple of other spots. didn't turn out to be as bad as it could have been. wasn't good. still damage out there. severe weather outbreak moves saturday through texas. sunday took it through houston early in the morning. louisiana worst of it overnight watched damages wind reports. 91 wind reports. 77 large hail reports. very active. this morning still have a tornado watch for areas of new orleans, mobile area. probably be extended into southern alabama and pan handle later today. line of storms mostly wind

damage is the threat. had a lot of heavy rain. slow moving storm. counties covered in and dark red here. flash flood warnings. had numerous reports of 3-6 inches. slow improvements in louisiana as storm moves out. mississippi and alabama. that's where the worst of it is slowly heading your way. severe threat today. yesterday we were in a moderate risk. one higher than enhanced. dropped that down a little bit. that was good. still have 20 million people at risk of severe storms. of course the storms are now nearing new orleans. areas of georgia and south carolina later on today. later tonight in areas of north carolina. get tornados today. most likely will be weaker ones down here towards the golf. stronger tornado, looks like central georgia and central portions or northern portions of south carolina along the warm front. super cell. a few of those. waiting to see how that develops and materializes later on today.

politic showdown over supreme court nominee is set to take center stage in washington beginning today as democrats look to block the confirmation of neil gorsuch. senate judiciary carlos estevg expected to meet. if that does happen, sets the stage for a final vote on gorsuch on friday. over the weekend. senator of indiana announced he will vote in favor of gorsuch. makes him the third democratic along with senators joe mansion and heidi high camp to announce support. several more announced they would vote no. richard blumenthal. that leaves the democrats just two votes shy of 41 needed to block the supreme court nominee with just a handful of democrats still undecided on how they'll vote. despite falling short of 60 votes needed to avoid a

staffers. exact figures are not listed, but pretty staggering. jared kushner and ivana trump combined assets more than $700 million. director of national economic, upwards of 600 million. the disclosure show that 27 of the president's staffers are worth a combined $2.3 billion. according to analysis from "the washington post", 86% of the county that trump won make up -- make less than that in a single year. that's when you combine the income of every household. also found that only 8% of trump voting counties had a combine income greater than the presidents reported worth of 3.9 billion. we should note the president and vice president don't have to complete conditional disclosures until next year. still ahead. severe marches across parts of the south. ten reported tornados and more than 100 reports of damage just over the last 24 hours.
