no. -hey mr. parker. claim satisfaction guarantee, only from allstate. it's good to be in good hands. plan was to fly down to mexico and pick up a ton of marijuana. at that age, you'd never think about what could go wrong. >> we have a fire. >> we were in serious trouble. >> this is really starting to become a nightmare.
6:01 pm
>> i don't know how you feel about it. >> and i am thinking -- >> are they going the kill us and bury us, and this is the the end of it? >> it was a living hell. in 1972, i married my sweetheart. i had just turned 19, and i thought that i was doing the right thing at that time. my wife was pregnant and that we were going to have our first child. life was good. we didn't have much money, but you know, at that age, life is bigger than life.
6:02 pm
life was an adventure. i smoked marijuana at that time, and who didn't back in the 1970s at 19? everybody was smokinging marijuana. it was a different era back then. you had the vietnam war going on, and it is more or less dropout turn out [ laughter ] yeah. my wife's older brother, chris, he was working with the hollywood crowd. i always looked up to him. i liked hip. he always had that sense of confident. always very sure of himself. always wanted to be like him. >> there is my little sister. hey, georgina.
6:03 pm
jim. >> chris. >> and while we were having a drink, chris pulled me aside and he said, i need to talk to you. >> sure. >> so what is new with chris? you are a hard man to track down these days. >> and he told me that he had been flying in and out of mexico and that he had connections down there. and i said okay. >> hear me out. i have been smuggling dope. >> i was shocked and i was surprised and i couldn't believe that he would take that risk. >> why would you want to do t that? >> i am making a lot of money. >> and he said that he had been making his millions before he was 40er years old. that is why i wanted to talk to you. i need somebody to help me to fly down to mexico. >> and he goes, jim, you are the only guy i can trust. we are like brothers. >> and in a way, i kind of felt special.
6:04 pm
e e he said it is $20,000 for one time. >> that was a lot of money back then, $20,000. >> $20,000. think about it. >> i kind of wanted to help chris out, but at the same time i was very concerned. it was a risk. but that is probably more money that i would see in five years. my wife here was pregnant and to be able to buy a new house and provide for the family. >> would you do it? >> and i thought about it. and i said yeah. >> yeah? >> yeah, why not. >> oh, come on, man. it is going to be great. >> looking back on it, it was
6:05 pm
not a very good decision. a few days later, i met chris at the airport in las cruses. and he showed me the airplane. >> all right. >> so it was kind of exciting. the plan was to fly down to mexico and pick up 2,000 pounds of marijuana. that is a lot of marijuana. yes, it is. chris had pulled out six of the passenger seats from the fuselage. >> you see, this is the additional fuel tank. >> and he had a bladder tank that held about 5,000 gallons. >> i guess that is going to give us an extra 2,000 miles. >> the bladder tank had the range to go nonstop. >> we go to southern mexico, and
6:06 pm
load up and fly straight back to the states. >> so less time on the ground, the less chance to be apprehended. all right. man, let's do some checks. >> and chris was not an engin r engineer, but he has been around airplanes his whole life and soy felt comfortable that he knew what he was doing. y felt comfortable that he knew what he was doiniy felt comfortw what he was doin what he was doing. chris had to pay ahead roughly $50,000, and the street value at that time, you are looking at close to half a million. >> i cannot believe that you could sell it for that. >> that and much more. [ laughter ] >> so you could see that it was very lucrative. ten hours down there, and we had a long time to think about it. you hear a lot of rumors in
6:07 pm

marijuana. and when we looked at it, it was very high grade, and very good marijuana, very strong. it was buds, and it was well manicured that would have a high street value, and it would sell very well in the united states. >> all right. that is good. >> all right. let's go. >> we wanted to get the plane loaded and back up into the air. because once you are in the air, you don't have to worry about getting captured. we just started to throw it inside there, and started up behind the cockpit, and worked it back towards the door. and it covered the tank.
6:09 pm
and it filled the whole inside of the airplane. and then i asked him -- >> is this going to be okay? >> and he said, yes, jim. i have done it before. you will be okay. >> all right. >> and it left only a couple of feet below the top inside of the fuselage, and just enough room to get into the pilot chair and the co-pilot's chair. [ laughter ] >> let's get out of here. >> so flying back. it was kind of a sense of relief that we made it. we had a good product. it was a good feeling knowing that i should provide for my

" "the plane is on fire," and we realized that we had covered the pump and it overheated and caught the marijuana on fire. >> jim, put it out. >> as i grabbed it and then i realized that the thing was empty. didn't check it. it was not checked. it was not recharged.
6:11 pm
>> there is nothing in it. we did not check it. it was total panic. >> no! >> and aviation gas is highly flammable. we were up at 10,000 feet, and no way out of the plane and you were trapped and all i could think about is that we were going to explode in midair. >> we have to put this down now, all right. >> and we were screaming at each other. we were choking, and it was hard to breathe. it was a living hell. >> we are going down. here we go. >> i remember coming down fast, and chris was saying, hold on. as we were coming over the trees you could hear the sound of the trees on the bottom of the plane. >> here we go sclam brian, i just had a quick question. brian? brian... legacy technology can handcuff any company.

we were in mexico illegally and no visa and we did not file a flight plan and then we real iz ed we crashed on an island. and there's no way off of the island. that is when it really set in that we were in trouble. >> what do we do now? >> we knew with the plane being on fire, and big flames, that everybody must have seen it come down. so we thought that it was a matter of time that the military was going to be coming up, and arrest us and we were going to be busted. we had to get off of the island. >> we are going to have to swim. >> chris went into the water
6:17 pm
first. >> are you ready? >> we didn't think that it was that far. maybe two or three miles at the most. the thing is that it is very deceiving distance over the water. as we left the island, itself, the water the was somewhat calm, but as we started swimming the current was very strong. it was taking us out to the big ocean. and then that is when we started to panic. i can't swim that well, and chris can't swim this well, and we were dehydrated and tired and then we realized that we are in trouble. i was doing everything that i could to just keep my head above water.
