good morning. i'm gigi stone woods. thanks for joining us. >> i'm frances rivera. appreciate you being up early with us on this memorial day. on this who had president trump wakes up to white house in crisis mode. returned from nine-day five-city trip to chaos as the russia investigation looks to imperil his presidency. releasing a lot of tweets, fake news media, hits close to home. revelations on son-in-law and senior adviser jared kushner after lawyers claim kushner had three undisclosed conversations with the russian ambassador to the united states. that after "washington post" reported kushner tried to establish back channel communications with the russian operatives during the transition. and they are communications homeland security chief john kelly is defending.

about health care and, quote, massive tax cuts reform package he says is moving along very well, promising big benefits to all. he's expected to hold rallies in the coming weeks to push his agenda. >> the battle to retake mosul could soon be over. the iraqi military said it launched an operation that captured part of the city still held by isis. the terror group took over mosul in 2014 and the u.s.-backed defensive to reclaim it has now taken eight months. it's taken longer than planned because isis militants are dug in among civilians. the pentagon in thacknowledged more than 100 u.s. operations forces were working with units around mosul with hundreds more playing support roles further from the front lines. at home a navy s.e.a.l. died in a tragic parachute incident during new york city's fleet week. richard lui has details. >> reporter: it was supposed to be a highlight of fleet week, demonstration by u.s. navy parachute team called the

leapfrogs descending in formation near the statue of liberty. instead, something went very wrong. >> liberty park, north and south. down in the water. >> reporter: one of the s.e.a.l.s was killed when his parachute failed to open. >> navy parachute failed to operate properly and landed in the water adjacent to the park. he was retrieved immediately by u.s. coast guard personnel and jersey fire department marine unit. >> reporter: the s.e.a.l. was pronounced dead, a piece of the broken chute cut loose during the fall apparently dropped into a parking lot nearby. a celebration of service turning to tragedy on a weekend when we honor military. richard lui, nbc news. in mississippi, police are investigating why a man gunned down eight people including a deputy in a small town. now, that man, 35-year-old willie cory godbolt is in custody. he spoke out moments after his

arrest sunday morning. >> suicide by cop was my intention. i lived? not after what i done. >> he told reporter he got into an argument about his estranged wife about his children before the shooting spree started. authorities say godbolt targeted three homes starting at 11:30 saturday night. three women kill in the first home along with deputy sheriff who was responding to the domestic call. in the second home two underage boys killed. in the third home two miles away another man and woman found dead. police have not confirmed whether he knew the victims but family members said some of them are related. godbolt held on one count of capital murder, seven counts of first degree murder. north korea launched a short range ballistic missile according to military officials. this is the second launch in two days. nbc's blake mccoy in london this morning. what's the latest on north korea and the reaction from the u.s.? >> frances, good morning.

u.s. officials say short range ballistic missile flew for six minutes and 250 miles before crashing into the sea of japan. japanese officials don't believe it hit anything but it is the third missile test in three weeks. tensions in the region are already high. this morning japan and south korea are vowing to take action. over the weekend, north korean state media released these photos of kim jong-un overseeing new military exercises. the isolated country and its nuclear ambition is seen as one of the biggest national security challenges facing the trump administration. u.s. officials say they are still working this morning to gather information about the latest launch. frances and gigi. >> blake mccoy, thank you. there was a scary moment at the indy 500 on the 55th lap, jay howard came out of the turn, hit the wall, speeding down and crashing into another driver scott dixon, sending him flying into the air on top of the safety barrier.

fortunately, if you can believe it, both drivers survived this incident. they were examined and cleared by the medical center. while they didn't win, the first japanese driver won indy 500. here he is celebrating. doesn't drink at all but thumb's over the head. nice tradition. >> unbelievable. that is the headline at the french open when the number one female angelique kerber made history. she became the first female to ever get ousted from the tournament in round one. she rose to number one after serena williams stepped off the court due to injury and pregnancy in january. for a look at memorial day weather, here is meteorologist bonnie schneider. is it going to rain? >> it's raining now gigi and friends. across the northeast and into the mid-atlantic, we have thunderstorms through the state college area and across much of the south. if you're driving i-10 louisiana

or texas, be careful out there. it's a busy day for travel memorial day. texas and southeast, some of the places we're watching for highways to be a little more congested due to thunderstorms like in the houston area we're expecting storms today and through much of upstate new york. really from boston to philadelphia if you're driving i-95 or 87 or 90, buffalo, all those places you may have to face downpours. how about for those of you flying. in the past couple of days hasn't been bad for airport delays but this afternoon could get worse for major cities. i mentioned houston, but also atlanta, detroit, chicago could face weather related delays. temperatures for this holiday quite warm. temperatures for the holiday are warm, actually very hot as you head off further to the areas of the west where we're above normal but cooler in parts of the northeast and staying warm but not quite as hot as what we've seen in texas. notice back in the 80s as opposed to 90s where temperatures have been past few days. overall stormy conditions in the north and south but west looking great for memorial day holiday. >> all right. bonnie, thank you very much. senator john mccain is

men killed. one witness who helped the victim said the severity of the attack must be made clear. >> i hope that it is labeled what it is, and that is a terrorist attack. i want that to be clear. >> christian has been charged with aggravated murder and attempted murder. >> turning now to the investigation in last week's deadly bombing in manchester, england, where more arrests have been made. fourteen people now in custody as the country remains on high alert. armed guards were present as thousands took part in the annual manchester run on sunday. runners paused in silence to honor the victims. also sunday "meet the press," u.s. homeland security secretary john kelly severely condemned intelligence leaks that briefly halted information flow between the united states and britain. >> if it came from the united states, it's totally unacceptable. i don't know why people do these kind of things, but it's borderline, if not over the line of treason.

nbc's lucy kafanov has more for us from manchester. lucy, the terror threat was reduced from critical to severe. how is that impacting the investigation, if at all? >> reporter: that's right, the threat level taken from critical to severe. that means an attack is no longer imminent but still likely. that has not slowed down or stopped that fast-paced investigation of people working around the clock to take down the network behind salman abedi, the 22-year-old attacker. police making numerous raids as well as arrests of a 23-year-old man in sussex. that brings the total men in custody to 14. we do know that they have done a rather thorough job in the aftermath of this attack, for example, identifying the bomber just two hours after that monday massacre locating the flat where he's believed to have conducted his bomb, where he built the actual bomb. there are growing questions about what more authorities could have done to prevent the attack. it does appear he was known to

them. he was identified as a person of interest at one point, but no investigation was pursued at that time. that hasn't stopped people of manchester to come out and pay respects and standing strong in defiance of this attack, taking to the streets yesterday for the great manchester run. 40,000 people, a range of emotions on the streets. >> we thought by coming here, coming to manchester and show the terrorists won't win. >> reporter: so there you have it. despite what happened, people not afraid. they are taking to the streets. they are showing their support for this city. ariana grande announcing she will be returning to manchester to play a benefit concert. again, as can you see, crowds are still turning out.

it's a long weekend, holiday weekend. a lot of folks coming out to pay their respects for those 22 people whose innocent lives were taken in that monday attack. >> nbc's lucy kafanov. lucy, thank you. a little boy lucky to be relatively unscathed after falling off a water slide. as a boy reached the bottom, goes airborne, skids across the concrete. he was able to get up on his own and walk away with just a few scratches. it happened at wade's water park in california. the ride is closed until park officials figure out what went wrong and how top prevent it. >> scary to see that video of him coming down. time to switch gears. what better way to start the unofficial start of the summer than wiener races. hundreds of dachshunds. the top dog. they raised money for rescue pet services. they look like something out of a comic book. the game ball for portuguese cup soccer final was delivered to the ref by that man riding on top of the drone. despite the wet conditions, the

trump's week as he looks to find a new fbi chief and more. mike viqueira joins us this morning from the white house. good morning, mike. >> reporter: good morning, frances. president trump and mrs. trump arrived back 9:00 pm sunday evening, spending most of a rainy sunday inside the white house. early on suny morninga series of tweets taking after some of his favorisubjects, so-called fake news media, telling his followers not to believe anything they read that's attributed to anonymous sources. the president face ace week ahead full of controversy. first he has to decide whether or not he will keep the united states in a paris accord. he will have to decide on an fbi director. joe lieberman withdrew his name

for consideration while president trump was away. but perhaps the biggest controversy involves his son-in-law and top white house staffer and adviser, jared curbner, allegedly opening a back channel with russians in secret before president trump came into the white house january 20th. that now the leak from "the washington post." congress is away for the week. also the health care legislation is still stuck in the senate. that future could be told when congressmen and senators go back to meet their constituents over the course of the week. a lot of controversy the president will be dealing with as he returns to the white house for a full week. frances? >> mike viqueira, thank you. hall of fame major league baseball pitcher and former senator jim bunning of kentucky has died. it comes after he suffered a stroke last october. his family said he died late friday due to complications. he played for the detroit tigers, phillies, detroit tigers

and los angeles dodgers in the span of 17 years. he is one of only 18 major league players to throw a perfect game in the modern era and went on to represent kentucky in congress for more than 24 years before retiring from office. jim bunning was 85 years old. thousands of bikers rumbled into the nation's capital as part of the rolling thunder ride for freedom. since 1988, bikers, spectators gathered in washington to honor military veterans and those missing in action. today the bikers are scheduled to lay wreathes at the world war ii memorial and at the tomb of the unknown soldier in arlington cemetery. one family is make a remarkable contribution to their country. noah, cole and sumner obriziak all graduating from west point academy this year. they've not graduate three siblings in the same year in three decades. their parents both served in the

coast guard and could not be prouder. quite an accomplishment. now in southern california, a u.s. navy pilot was finally laid to rest more than half a century after he was shot down over vietnam. for his family, it was a promise kept. nbc's steve patterson has more. >> reporter: honor and a homecoming. classified missing in action for more than 50 years was given a full military burial in san diego. remembered by his four children. deborah crosby was only 6 years old when she received the news that her father was presumed dead, likely shot down during a recon mission in north vietnam in 1965. but his body wasn't located, haunting the family for years. >> it was just such a sad story that my dad was still in vietnam

and not recovered. >> reporter: she made a vow to her grandmother to one day bring his remains home. >> she lit a fire underneath me and it was hopeful to actually take some steps towards doing something. >> reporter: the u.s. military actively searches for missing service members involved in conflicts. deborah never gave up, tracking her father's case regularly even after her mother and grandmother passed away. until a breakthrough two years ago when military investigators drained a fishing pond near where the plane went down, discovering his wedding band in the remains. >> i burst into tears. i was overwhelmed. >> lieutenant commander crosby, finally returning home. >> instead of being filled with pain, we're filled with pride and we're just so happy that he's home. >> reporter: his daughter, fulfilling that once far-away promise as a country honors his service and sacrifice. steve patterson, nbc news, los angeles. >> thank you for being with us on this memorial day.
