yasmin vossoughian and louis burgdorf. jeff sessions will go before the senate for questions about his contacts with russian officials, what role he played in the firing of james comey and to respond to former fbi director's claims about him. a spokeswoman said, quote, he believes it is important for the american people to hear the truth directly from him. though the senate has been known for its collegial atmosphere, the last time sessions was before his colleagues for confirmation, things turned controversial. today is to come with pointed questions, particularly over his meetings with sergei kiy kislya. yesterday senator al franken discussed how it may have been discovered. >> for seven weeks after he gave this false testimony, he didn't correct it. didn't correct it until the washington post actually said that he had met with kislyak a couple times.

we asked specifically about this meeting at the mayflower and other meetings, too, in a priftd letter to the director that weave now made public. he'll explain whether this third meeting was an actual meeting. they've intercepted some contacts within kislyak and his people. kislyak may have been exaggerating the meeting. you know, because he wanted to look important. >> well, that's understandable. >> i met with jeff sessions -- >> oh, you're an important ambassador. >> in june a department of justice spokesperson said sessions did not have any private or side considerations with any russian officials at the mayflower hotel. as for a failure to disclose other meetings, doj says he did not have to disclose meetings with foreign ambassadors that took place during his time in the senate. sessions will also likely be asked about what happened after an oval office meeting on february 14th. comey testified last week the president cleared all of the other high-level officials out of the room.

at the end of their discussion, except for jeff sessions. >> my impression is something big is about to happen. i needed to remember every single word spoken. my sense is the attorney general knew he shouldn't be leaving, which is why he was lingering. i don't know mr. kushner well but i think he picked up on the same thing. a really significant fact to me is, so why did he kick everyone out of the oval office? why would you kick the attorney general, the president, the chief of staff, out to talk to me if it was about something else? so, that -- that, to me, as an investigator, is a very significant fact. >> now, after that comey said he asked the sessions not to let the president talk to him again. sessions did not reply. the attorney general recused himself but in the wake of frequently changing narrative

they want to know what role sessions played with the up in coming fbi director who was leading the investigation. one of president's confidantes questioned how long the president would keep robert mueller. >> i think he's considering, perhaps, terminating the special counsel. i think he's weighing that option. i think it's pretty clear by what one of his lawyers said on television recently. i personally think it would be a very significant mistake even though i don't think there's a justification and even though -- >> a justification for? >> for special counsel in this case. >> and christopher ruddy told fox, while i'm not claiming the president said it to me, i'm confident of my sourcing he's considering as an option. the president was reportedly postponed and sean spicer didn't deny the claim.

he later told nbc news that mr. ruddy never spoke to the president regarding this issue with respect to the subject only the president or his attorneys are authorized to comment. ruddy was not only -- was not the only trump ally to question the merits of the special counsel. take a listen. >> but i think that what republicans ought to focus on is closing down the independence counsel because he's not independe independent. he's apparently very close to comey. we know comey hates trump. have you to assume that leaks over to mueller. you have to assume the people muller's going to bring in are essentially justice department people who were 33-1 in favor of clinton over trump. this clearly cannot be an honest, independent investigation. >> but political observers were quick to notice change of heart from newt gingrich who twoetd when mueller was appointed he, quote, is a superintendent esh choice to be special counsel. media should now calm down.

then yesterday gingrich tweeted, republicans are delusional if they think the special counsel is going to be fair. look who he is hiring. check reports. comey admitted to set up special counsel. comey and mueller are close. number three, mueller is hiring partisans. ranking house intel member adam schiff tweeted, if president fired bob mueller, congress would immediately re-establish special counsel and reappointed bob mueller. don't waste our time. its not see how republicans could see that clue. adam schiff joins "morning joe" around 7:00 a.m. president trump has been dealt anoth lal blow. a panel of three judges from ninth circuit court of appeals unanimously upheld an earlier decision by judge from hawaii. the judges argued the president exceeded scope of authority delegated to him by congress. they also disputed the

president's claim that there weren't adequate safeguards to keep terrorists out of the united states. in making their decision the judges' cited president trump's tweets, we need a travel ban for certain dangerous countries, and sean spicer considers them official statements by the president. president trump met with his entire cabinet for the first time yesterday at the white house. the president used the meeting to taut the administration's accomplishments so far. calling himself one of the most productive presidents in u.s. history. >> i will say that never has there been a president with few exceptions, case of fdr, he had a major depression to end, who's passed more legislation, who's done as many things as we've done. i think you can be as active as you can possibly be at just about a record-setting pace. >> the president asked each

survived. russian state tv, the top story was putin, showing students his office. no mention of the unrest or of navalny. bill cosby's sexual assault trial came to an abrupt end after defense attorneys ended after six hours of testimony. now we're waiting for a verdict. at least 10 million are at risk of severe weather today. we'll get a full check of the forecast coming up next.

welcome back. comedian bill cosby's fate is in the hands of a pennsylvania jury. >> deliberations in the sexual assault case began yesterday after lawyers wrapped up defense after six minutes. jurors have not reached a verdict yesterday. stephanie gosk has a look at what happened in the courtroom.

>> reporter: for the first time since the trial began, bill cosby arrived at the courthouse with his wife of more than 50 years. >> she came in holding his hand. you got to see her. it wasn't a show. it was real. it was real love. >> reporter: it took the defense six minutes to present its case. just one witness. lead defense attorney then delivered a dramatic closing from folksy to shouting "stop this" dramatically. can this win a case? >> by injecting reasonable doubt, by connecting the dots. >> reporter: he highlighted inconsistency's in the story, arguing her relationship with cosby was romantic and saying it was consensual at one point yelling at the jury, you know why you're here? you're here because of them. he point to a group of women in the audience who accused women

of sexual misconduct suggesting the trial is more about them and the dozens of others who have come forward. the comedian denies all accusations. >> justice for andrea is justice for not all of us 60 women, for all of the other women that have not found their voice. >> reporter: in the prosecution's close, kevin steele told the jury, andrea's own words are enough to convict but he also focused on cosby's words during a civil deposition and a statement to police over a decade ago. there's no ability to get around what came out of the defendant's mouth, steele told them, including an admission he gave her pills and engaged in sexual contact. as for the idea there was romance the night of the incident, steele asked, this is romantic? you should be insulted by that. it's criminal. >> our thanks to stephanie gosk for that report. let's get a check on your weather with nbc meteorologist bill karins. you're telling me to enjoy the heat while it lasts.

welcome back, everybody. i'm yasmin vossoughian alongside ayman mohyeldin and louis burgdorf. let's start with the morning's top stories. comedian bill cosby's fate is now in the hands of the jury as deliberations in his sexual assault trial are set to begin this morning. cosby's defense team rested their case after just six minutes. after calling one witness, jurors deliberated for four hours yesterday before going home for the night. cosby has denied the allegations he drugged and molested a woman in his home in 2004. a federal court handed another legal loss to president trump in the ongoing battle over his revised travel ban. a panel of three judges from the ninth circuit court of appeals unanimously upheld an earlier decision by a judge in hawaii to

block the government from enforcing the executive order. the judges argued the president exceeded the scope of the authority delegated to him by congress with the ban. and the future of the special counsel robert mueller and his probe into russia's role in the election has come into question following comments by one of president trump's allies. christopher ruddy who was although the white house just yesterday said mr. trump was, quote, considering, perhaps, terminating special counsel. ruddy later told fox, quote, while i'm not claiming the president said it to me, i'm confident of my sourcing. he is definitely considering it as an option. jeff sessions returns to capitol hill facing questions over everything from the firing of james comey to undisclosed contacts with russia -- with the russian ambassador in the heat of the campaign. today is expected to come with pointed questions, particularly over his undeclared meetings with that russian ambassador, sergey kislyak. there is undiscovered third

meeting at mayflower hotel during the campaign in april. they say sessions did not have any private or side considerations with russian officials. sessions will also likely be asked about what happened after an oval office meeting back on february 14th. if you recall, comey testified last week that at that meeting the president cleared all of the other high-level officials at the end of that discussion, except for him. here's what comey said about whether it was appropriate for sessions to play a role in his firing. >>hat's a qstion i can't answer. i think it's a reasoble question. if as the president said i was fired because of the russian investigation, why was the attorney involved in that chain? i don't know. so, i don't have an answer for the question. >> joining us now from washington, white house correspondent for "the hill" jordan fabian. great to have you with us. a lot of eyes watching capitol hill. people to pay the closest attention today are going to be republicans on the senate intel committee. why do you think that is?

>> well, thanks for having me on. it's going to be interesting to see how hard they go after sessions on these two key questions. his contacts with russian officials that were previously undisclosed and his role in president trump's firing of james comey. will the republican senators really put him under the gun or are they going to be defending him in this hearing? that's what we'll have to wait and see. the bigger picture here is yet again, last week we had comey week. this week we'll have sessions day. this is a question, in this russian investigation and the way it's ensnaring top trump administration officials, it's going to be a continued headache for the white house. this is a week where they're trying to focus on jobs and the economy, the president traveling to wisconsin. but all eyes will be on sessions. >> any thoughts sessions could invoke executive privilege? >> he could invoke executive privilege on parts of his testimony, those regarding his

conversations with president trump. that could apply to some of the questions surrounding whether he, you know, what did -- did nings that violated the recusal. on questions with his contacts with russian officials, won't be able to invoke prif vilege on tt so he will be likely compelled to answer those questions. >> i know there was a lot of attention made by republican senators over what they saw or what they described as treatment of -- shabby treatment, i should say, of jeff sessions back during his confirmation. do you get a sense that even they are beginning to kind of lose some patience over the continued headlines involving him and russia that are consistently dogging him? >> it's a tough question. look, you know, the senate's a close-knit club, especially some of the gop senators today i think are going to be defending senator sessions one way or another during this hearing. but another thing the senators don't like, it's being misled, especially during a confirmation

hearing. that's when attorney general sessions said that he didn't have any of these meetings. they're going to want to know the answers to that. there will be many members of the intelligence committee today who will be pressing him hard for answers. >> jordan, we've been talking today about this claim of the president possibly thinking about firing bob mueller. can we believe they're going to ask sessions about this, especially considering sessions is very much integral in that decision, along with rod rosenstein, who were part of the firing of comey? >> absolutely he'll be asked about it. the deputy attorney general rod rosenstein is in charge of the russia investigation. under the current regulations, he would be the one to have to fire robert mueller if the president decided to do that, or the president could decide to go around him. that being said, you know, the attorney general is still at the head of the justice department. he's going to have to answer if asked whether he things that's a

good idea or what kind of procedures would need to happen to make that happen. >> needless to say its going to be another busy day on capitol hill. jordan fabian live for us in washington, thank you. the u.s. secret service says they do not have any audio copy of transcript of any tapes regarded within president donald trump's white house. the agency disclosed this information. in response to freedom of information request made by "the wall street journal," the secret service maintained previous white house recording systems for past presidents, including richard nixon and john f. kennedy. however they noted it's possible other entities could have made recordings. the white house has refused to clarify if any tapes exist after president trump suggested his private considerations with fbi director james comey were recorded. on friday trump said he would tell people about the alleged recordings, quote, over a very short period of time. sean spicer side-stepped their existence yesterday. >> does president trump have audio recordings of his conversations and meetings with

former fbi director james comey? >> the president made clear in the rose garden he would have an announcement. >> any idea when that timeline would be? >> when the president is ready to make it. >> what is he waiting for? >> i think the president made it very clear on friday that he would get back as soon as possible on this and his position on that conversation. >> so what is he waiting for? what's the delay? >> he's not waiting for anything. when he's ready to further discuss it, he will. he laid out his position very clearly, concisely on friday. >> staying in washington, new reporting says senate republicans hope to vote on a health care bill by july but we shouldn't see the draft legislation any time soon. the gop has no plans to publicly release it. in the words of the senator of one senior republican aide, i should say, we aren't stupid. it's currently being worked on behind closed doors and would still need a cbo score before members vote on it. the house version of the bill was deeply unpopular and projected to leaf about 23 million americans more uninsured.

the president and vice president are expected to meet with republican senators today to discuss the status of repealing and replacing obamacare. the attorney general of maryland and washington, d.c. formally announced their lawsuit against president trump saying he violated the anti-corruption clauses in the constitution. the officials unveiled the suit yesterday saying the president has failed to completely separate himself from his vast business empire, which they claim undermines public trust. the suit claims the president is in violation of the foreign emoluments clause, which prohibits the president from accepting payments from foreign governments without the consent of congress, citing the president's luxury hotel in washington, d.c., numerous golf courses and rerts and hundreds of thousands of dollars paid by countries, including saudi arabia and qatar for property in trump-owned buildings. the attorneys general say they plan to ask for the president's financial and tax records as part of the suit. they'll discuss their lawsuit coming up on "morning joe." let's turn to business where tech stocks is dragging down all

three indexes. we're joined live from london with with more. good morning. >> good morning. tech stocks and overall markets were down once again yesterday. yes, the nasdaq saw its worst two-day fall since december. that said, the declines were quite limited. the nasdaq was only down by half of 1%. that tells you maybe this was the end of that big selloff we saw over the last two trading days. maybe this is a very healthy correction because a lot of analysts tell us while valuations for some big tech names were very, very high leading up to this crash. i want to talk about uber. the firings at the ride-sharing app that continued yesterday with the departure of michael, the right hand of the ceo. he's been crucial in fund-raising and also in the push when it comes to self-driving cars. the big question, guys, still out there is whether the ceo himself will step aside for a couple months as he had been

requesting. maybe we get more details and answers when we get eric holder's recommendations. those will be released to 14,000 uber employees today. finally, want to talk about retail. well, its been a really tough time for many of the retailers out there. so far this year weave already seen bankruptcy filings by payless shoe stores, rue 21 and g gymboree filing for bankruptcy protection. fitch came up with a so-called loans of concern list. among them, sears, claire stores, nine west holding and j. crew. back over to you. >> thanks so much. teens looking for a job at mcdonald's will find applying this summer much different. they plan to hire 250,000 employees this season using the popular social media app snapchat in an attempt to appeal to younger applicants. starting today they'll experience video ads that lead to a mcdonald's career page

the terms of the deal reportedly prohibit the president from lifting the sanctions without congressional approval and codifies existing sanctions while adding new economic restrictions. the deal will be attached to a larger bill imposing new sanctions on iran. a procedural vote is expected tomorrow morning. if it passes, it heads to a simple up or down vote on thursday. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says he supports the additional actions against russia. it's clun fer the president plans to veto the measure and also unclear where the administration stands on easing or instituting additional sanctions against russia. this comes as a slew of protests erupted across russia rallying against corruption and president vladimir putin. they are some of the largest antigovernment demonstrations in year. footage shows riot police using force to quell what is described as a peaceful protest. more than 1,000 people were
